Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 will begin on July 6th, starting by taking anime viewers to the past. Rather than following the story of Yuji Itadori, the anime adaptation will be examining the earlier life of Satoru Gojo, the Jujutsu Tech teacher who remains the most popular character of the franchise. WIth the premiere installment just a few days from hitting the small screen, a synopsis has been shared to give supernatural shonen fans a better idea of the story to come.

It's been quite some time since we last saw Yuji Itadori front and center in the anime series, as the conclusion of the first season gave way to the first film of the franchise that examined Jujutsu Kaisen's prior protagonist, Yuta Okkotsu. Rather than struggling with the King of the Curses, Yuta had a far different problem in that his cursed energy manifested itself by transforming the deceased love of his life into a monstrous fiend. While Yuta won't be a part of this Gojo-centric flashback, he might just make an appearance in the future of Jujutsu Kaisen's anime.

Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Synopsis

Titled "Hidden Inventory", the first episode of season 2 shared a brief description but gives fans a hint as to the story that is slated to arrive for Gojo and his Jujutsu Tech student body, "Year 2006. Sorceress Utahime and Mei Mei are investigating a Western-style mansion that has a history. Suddenly, the building begins to collapse and they are thrown into the air..."

While the first cours of the second season will focus on the Gojo flashback, the second cours will bring us back to Yuji and his fellow Jujutsu Tech students. Covering the Shibuya Incident Arc, Yuji might wish that he didn't return to the series based on the challenges that are lying in wait for him and his friends. Jujutsu Kaisen has been a white-hot property since its original arrival in 2018, with the first film becoming one of the biggest anime movies of all time and the manga having over eighty million copies in circulation.

Do you think Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 will be the biggest anime event this summer? Are you looking forward to traveling to the past to see Gojo's story? Overwatch 2 Animated Mini-Series Announced https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/overwatch-2-genesis-animated-mini-series-announced/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 19:37:00 +0000 Cade Onder e7b6d618-06e7-4ffa-ae20-076fe72f9e23

An Overwatch animated mini-series has been announced. Overwatch is one of the biggest free-to-play multiplayer games out there and has attracted a rather rabid fan base. Not only do the fans adore playing the game, but they enjoy soaking up the world. Blizzard has become known for producing all kinds of animated shorts over the years that expand the lore of the series as well as introduce us to new characters. They have a high level of production value, almost akin to that of a Pixar short. They're really impressive and both fans of the game and outsiders swarm them whenever they release.

Seemingly being aware of all of that, Blizzard has announced that it is producing an animated mini-series called Overwatch Genesis. The three-part mini-series begins on July 6th with the first episode being titled Dawn. It will be just over 5 minutes long and will be available on YouTube on July 6th at 9AM PT. As of right now, it seems like the series will follow a war between humans and AI as well as feature some characters from the Overwatch universe. It looks like it'll have plenty of action, world building, and even an art style that's a bit similar to that of an anime. It's unclear if Blizzard plans to do anything else like this or if this is just a one-time thing. Either way, it's a cool little thing for fans to eat up.

It does come at an interesting time as Overwatch 2 has been in a storm of controversy. The game recently canceled its long-awaited single-player PvE content, something that was pitched as the entire reason to make a sequel in the first place. Some of this content was seemingly salvaged for a new update, but it's not quite at the scale fans had hoped for after all of this time. Maybe this new mini-series will be enough to help fans move on, though.

One Piece Cosplay Celebrates "Egghead" Nami https://comicbook.com/anime/news/one-piece-cosplay-nami-egghead-best-anime-girls/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 19:08:00 +0000 Evan Valentine 048a21ed-3f41-41b5-8c0b-73353605ec56

One Piece's anime might be neck deep in the War For Wano Arc, pitting Monkey D. Luffy and his fellow Straw Hat Pirates against Kaido and his Beast Pirates, but the manga has moved on from the isolated nation. Creator Eiichiro Oda has stated that the current saga playing out in the printed story will be its last, with the Egghead Arc seeing the Straw Hats encounter Dr. Vegapunk. Thanks to arriving on Egghead Island, many of the Straw Hat Pirates were given new outfits, including the ship's mapmaker, Nami.

The Egghead Arc saw Luffy and crew discovering new secrets about the Devil Fruit thanks to Dr. Vegapunk, but they had little time to process it as the world government was gunning for them. Monkey D. Luffy had the opportunity to once again transform into his Gear Fifth form, fighting against Rob Lucci, though the latest storyline has since shifted to focus on some other parts of the Grand Line. Exploring the death of King Cobra and Sabo's encounter with the FIve Elders, and the higher-up pulling their strings, it's clear that Oda is letting out all the stops when it comes to ending the journey of his beloved anime characters.

Egghead Nami

Like Luffy, Nami received a new outfit when she arrived on Egghead Island that makes her look far more futuristic than she had while being a part of the Wano Arc. Each of the Straw Hat Pirates has an iconic look that has been perfected over the decades, with the manga, anime series, and movies able to show off their fits. As One Piece continues, we're sure to see a few more outfits given to the shonen heroes before the final chapter arrives.

One Piece is planning to have a big role at this year's Anime Expo, the convention wherein Netflix is planning to reveal new tidbits when it comes to the upcoming live-action adaptation of the series. Debuting on August 31st, anime fans are biting their nails in anticipation of the series and wondering if it will do justice to the manga. If the live-action series were to ever reach the Egghead Arc, it would take quite a few seasons.

What is your favorite look for Nami throughout One Piece? What did you think of the Egghead Arc? Feel free to let us know in the comments or hit me up directly on Twitter @EVComedy to talk all things comics, anime, and the world of the Grand Line.

Mushoku Tensei Releases New Video For Season 2 Arrival https://comicbook.com/anime/news/mushoku-tensei-jobless-reincarnation-season-2-premiere-preview/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 18:14:00 +0000 Evan Valentine 51d2017d-8e16-47df-99f3-cca38c1b062c

The summer anime season might have its biggest second season in Jujutsu Kaisen's return, but that doesn't mean there aren't some other big second seasons that are slated to arrive. Mushoko Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation is currently considered by many anime fans to be one of the biggest examples of isekai and new episodes are set to begin next month. Prior to Rudy and company's return, the franchise released a new trailer to get fans prepped for the upcoming new season of the fan-favorite.

Isekai has become a major genre in the anime world in recent years, with the genre typically focusing on a mundane protagonist who is transported to a magical world and given a major boost in their power. For a number of these tales, the protagonist will often die in an accident as way to be reincarnated or transported to the new locale. What Jobless Reincarnation is able to do so effectively is play up the strengths of isekai's tropes and has garnered quite the following from anime fans as a result.

Jobless Reincarnation: Episode 0 Preview

Oddly enough, Mushoku Tensei will begin its second season with "Episode 0". Luckily, this installment will not be a recap of the first season, but will rather adapt a previous chapter of the manga that had not been told previously. In the promotional footage that has been leaked so far, we have yet to see whether Rudy will take an active role when the first episode arrives on July 3rd.

If you haven't had the opportunity to dive into one of the biggest isekai anime series, you can check out Mushoku Tensei's first season on Crunchyroll. Here's how the streaming service describes the story of Rudy, "When a 34-year-old underachiever gets run over by a bus, his story doesn't end there. Reincarnated in a new world as an infant, Rudy will seize every opportunity to live the life he's always wanted. Armed with new friends, some freshly acquired magical abilities, and the courage to do the things he's always dreamed of, he's embarking on an epic adventure--with all of his past experience intact!"

Is Jobless Reincarnation your current favorite isekai? What are your predictions for Rudy's second season? Feel free to let us know in the comments or hit me up directly on Twitter @EVComedy to talk all things comics, anime, and the world of Mushoku Tensei.

Mashle: Magic And Muscles Confirms Season 2 For 2024 https://comicbook.com/anime/news/mashle-magic-and-muscles-season-2/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 17:06:00 +0000 Evan Valentine 81873b2e-30b8-490e-85f8-81c0d637fbb0

Mashle: Magic And Muscles has become one of the biggest new anime arrivals of 2023. Focusing on the protagonist Mash as he attempts to become the Divine Visionary, with next to no magical abilities to speak of, the series has been a cross between One-Punch Man and Harry Potter. Following the release of the anime's twelfth episode, A-1 Pictures has confirmed that the series will return in 2024 to continue Mash Burnedead's tale with its second season.

In the first season of Mashle: Magic And Muscles, which arrived in April of this year in Japan, we were introduced to Mash Burnedead, a character that has physical strength that might put him on a similar level as Saitama of One-Punch Man fame. Where the anime franchise is able to throw in interesting hooks is how Mash is able to convince his fellow students and teachers at Easton Magical Academy that his physical prowess is in fact magic. As viewers have seen, the series takes more than a few features from Harry Potter's Hogwarts when it comes to the magic school and the world that is fit to bursting with magic users.

Mashle Season 2

The Official Twitter Account for Mashle: Magic And Muscles confirmed that the series would return for a second season. Set to arrive in January of next year, 2024, the new trailer also shared hints at what is to come while also revisiting some major moments from the first season. A-1 Pictures, the studio behind the first season, is slated to return for season 2.

For those who have yet to experience the anime franchise's magical world, here's how Viz Media describes Mashle: Magic And Muscles: "This is a world of magic where magic is used for everything. But deep in the forest exists a young man who spends his time training and bulking up. He can't use magic, but he enjoys a peaceful life with his father. But one day, his life is put in danger! Will his muscular body protect him from the magic users who are out to get him? Powerfully trained muscles crush magic as this abnormal magical fantasy begins!"

Are you hyped for the return of Mashle next year? What was your favorite moment for Mash's first season? Feel free to let us know in the comments or hit me up directly on Twitter @EVComedy to talk all things comics, anime, and the world of Magic And Muscles.

Gundam: The Witch From Mercury Will Explore Mercury in Real Life https://comicbook.com/anime/news/gundam-the-witch-from-mercury-irl-space-exploration/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 16:32:00 +0000 Evan Valentine c2c125f5-5157-4bae-9397-712621356ff3

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury is preparing to end its second season next month. Suletta Mercury's adventure has become one of the biggest in the mech franchise's history, and the recent announcement from JAXA, The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, proves it. Both JAXA and the European Space Agency have teamed up with the Gundam series for a real-life expedition to explore the planet Mercury, looking to learn more about the world that helped name Gundam's latest protagonist.

This isn't the first time that JAXA has teamed up with the Gundam franchise, as the space exploration agency took the opportunity during the 2020 Olympics to launch Gunplas into outer space. JAXA had also teamed up with the anime franchise, One Piece, in the past, though this did not include firing off any Straw Hat Pirates into space. The collaboration saw creator Eiichiro Oda creating new art that placed Monkey D. Luffy into a space suit that was used by the Japanese organization. Based on the popularity of these initiatives, the worlds of anime and JAXA might crossover more in the future.

The JAXA From Mercury

JAXA shared new details about the collaboration thanks to its Official Twitter Account. The collaboration also brings in voice actors Kana Ichinose and Lynn who are best known for voicing Suletta Mercury and Miorine Rembran respectively. The probe that is being implemented for this new collaboration is even called "Mio" in honor of the Gundam supporting character.

Here's how The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency describes the mission that is employing the Gundam series to explore Mercury, "BepiColombo is an international mission comprised of two spacecraft riding together to Mercury to orbit and to study the planet from unique vantage points. The European Space Agency (ESA) provided one orbiter. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) supplied the second orbiter. BepiColombo launched in October 2018 and is scheduled to begin orbiting Mercury in 2025. ESA's Mercury Planetary Orbiter (MPO) will study the planet's surface and interior."

At present, Bandai Namco Filmworks has yet to confirm whether The Witch From Mercury will have a third season. The popularity of Suletta Mercury certainly lends credence to an argument that the anime adaptation might continue, especially as the Gundam Aerial has become a top seller for the company when it comes to Gundam Plastic Models, aka Gunplas.

What anime franchise deserves to break through the atmosphere? Do you think that the Witch From Mercury will return for a third season? Feel free to let us know in the comments or hit me up directly on Twitter @EVComedy to talk all things comics, anime, and the world of Gundam.

Jujutsu Kaisen Drops New Season 2 Premiere Preview https://comicbook.com/anime/news/jujutsu-kaisen-season-2-episode-1-preview/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 15:48:00 +0000 Evan Valentine a5b4de45-bcd5-4a58-ad1b-bac3a864fe46

Jujutsu Kaisen's second season is only a few days from arriving, and with its return, the shonen franchise is once again taking viewers to the past. Much like Jujutsu Kaisen 0, the anime adaptation will be following a different protagonist than Yuji Itadori but is going back even more than the first successful film of the franchise. With the first episode slated to arrive on July 6th as a Crunchyroll exclusive, a new preview video has arrived to give us a closer look at Gojo's tale.

Time and time again, Gojo has proven himself to be the most popular character of the supernatural franchise. Presented by creator Gege Akutami as a character that has nearly limitless power, Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 is taking the opportunity to take viewers to the past to examine what the teacher was like before he took Yuji Itadori under his wing and was a student himself. One of the major story beats of this upcoming arc is examining not just Gojo's early life, but also showing how the villain of the series, Suguro Geto, became the evil-doer that he is today. Luckily, this season will also see Yuji and company return after their big hiatus.

Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Preview

Assembling old and new footage from previous promotional material, Jujutsu Kaisen shared a new brief look at the upcoming premiere. While a third season has yet to be confirmed for Jujutsu Kaisen, there is plenty of material from the manga that has yet to be brought to the small screen. Thanks to the popularity of the supernatural shonen series, it's a surefire bet that the anime adaptation will continue in the future. Standing out as one of MAPPA's biggest projects, the animation studio will have some big battles ahead of it when it comes to Jujutsu Tech's world.

Studio Ghibli's How Do You Live Runtime Revealed https://comicbook.com/anime/news/studio-ghibli-how-do-you-live-runtime/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 15:15:00 +0000 Evan Valentine 73fadf95-fb1a-47b0-8d96-532579f8dda7

Studio Ghibli is trying a radical experiment with its next film and it's a doozy. Billed as Hayao Miyazaki's last film for the company, How Do You Live? is looking to adapt a popular 1930s novel of the same name. This however isn't the experiment, as Ghibli has decided to not release any promotional material and/or trailers when it comes to the movie that is arriving in Japanese theaters next month. With little news being revealed when it comes to Miyazaki's magnum opus, the runtime has found its way online.

Earlier this month, director Hayao Miyazaki confirmed that he was nervous about the lack of promotion for the film, even stating as such in the open, "I wonder if it'll be okay without publicity. I am beginning to worry. I do believe in you, Mr Suzuki. But I'm concerned, that's all." Though the movie is confirmed to hit theaters in Japan on July 14th next month, Ghibli has yet to confirm when we'll see How Do You Live? hit North America. Considering the popularity of Studio Ghibli the world over, it's a surefire bet that we'll potentially get a theatrical run in the West.

How Do You Live? Runtime

How Do You Live? will reportedly be two hours and four minutes long. Since there is no animation revealed to the public as of yet, many are left speculating what Miyazaki's work will look like and whether it will turn out to be Ghibli's greatest film to date.

Ghibli's President Toshio Suzuki had stated the following when it came to not releasing any promotional material for the film outside of one poster, "Let's go with just this one poster for the marketing.' So, no trailers or TV commercials at all. No newspaper ads either. Deep down, I think this is what moviegoers latently desire. In my opinion, in this age of so much information, the lack of information is entertainment. I don't know if this will work. But as for me, I believe in it, so this is what I'm trying to do."

If you're unfamiliar with How Do You Live?, the official description for the original novel reads as such, "The official description of the original novel reads as such, "How Do You Live? begins with fifteen-year-old Copper, who has recently suffered the loss of his father, gazing out over his hometown of Tokyo, watching the thousands of people below, and beginning to ponder life's big questions. How many people are in the world? What do their lives look like? Are humans really made of molecules? The book moves between Copper's story and his uncle's journal entries, in which he gives advice and helps Copper learn pivotal truths about the way the world works."

Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Confirmed as Crunchyroll Exclusive https://comicbook.com/anime/news/jujutsu-kaisen-season-2-crunchyroll-exclusive/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 13:59:00 +0000 Evan Valentine 03fa30ba-f7f8-4a40-ab63-a176a53235ce

Jujutsu Kaisen's second season is looking to be one of the biggest anime events of the summer season. WIth the upcoming MAPPA production looking to not just bring back Yuji Itadori and his crew, the installments will also explore the early life of the most popular teacher at Jujutsu Tech, Gojo. The first season of Jujutsu Kaisen found itself on quite a few streaming services when it arrived, but it is now confirmed that beginning on July 6th, Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 will be a Crunchyroll exclusive.

Not only will Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 be a Crunchyroll exclusive but the series will be simulcast from its Japanese release, proving how popular the shonen franchise has become in a relatively short amount of time. Crunchyroll currently houses both the original season as well as Jujutsu Kaisen 0, the first movie of the shonen franchise that explored the story of Yuji's predecessor, Yuta Okkotsu. Becoming one of the biggest anime films of all time, Jujutsu Kaisen stands alongside the likes of Demon Slayer when it comes to a shonen series that has wasted little time in climbing to the top of the anime ladder.

Jujutsu Kaisen Comeback

Also confirmed via a new Crunchyroll press release is the fact that Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 will be split over two "cours". The first batch of episodes is confirmed to dive into the story of Gojo and Geto's past history, showing how these two former classmates became bitter enemies in the franchise. Following this, anime fans will return to the present to witness the "Shibuya Incident Arc", which remains one of the biggest battles in Yuji and friends' lives.

For those who follow along with Jujutsu Tech's tale via a dubbed iteration, Crunchyroll has revealed that Jujutsu Kaisen will create dubs in English, Latin American Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Castilian Spanish, and Russian. The dubs at present have yet to receive a release date.

When it comes to the manga, things are heating up thanks to creator Gege Akutami. While the grand finale of Jujutsu Kaisen might be some time away, the mangaka has hinted at the idea that the series is inching closer to its end in the past. If the anime adaptation continues following the events of its source material, there are some big events and battles that are on the way.

Do you think Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 will be the biggest anime event of the summer season? Feel free to let us know in the comments or hit me up directly on Twitter @EVComedy to talk all things comics, anime, and the world of Jujutsu Tech.

Nimona Creator ND Stevenson "Can't Believe" Long-Awaited Netflix Film Is Finally Here https://comicbook.com/anime/news/nimona-creator-nd-stevenson-cant-believe-long-awaited-netflix-film-is-finally-here/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 11:19:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame f9e739dc-5399-46d3-873b-50c5ff214470

In 2015, Blue Sky Studios announced that they had acquired the rights to ND Stevenson's fan-favorite graphic novel Nimona. Almost a decade letter, Nimona is finally a finished movie -- albeit at Netflix -- and Stevenson says he "can't believe it's happening." The project, which was in development at Blue Sky Studios until Disney bought 20th Century Fox and shuttered the animation house, was reportedly close to done when the sale happened in 2021, but there was no way of completing it under the circumstances. In 2022, Annapurna Pictures announced they had acquired the movie, and would air it on Netflix.

The project stars Chloe Grace Moretz and Riz Ahmed, who had been cast prior to the Blue Sky sale, making most of the key players just as surprised as Stevenson that in an increasingly inhospitable environment for animation, Nimona had managed to come back to life.

"I also can't believe it's happening," Stevenson said. "I think it kind of snuck up on me when so many unexpected and sometimes devastating things happen in the production, I feel like we were all kind of guarding our hearts a little bit. Like, what unexpected curveball is going to hit us next? And now we're all here and it's hitting us all at the same time. It's real. This is really happening. It is a very cool feeling after that wild ride we've been on to finally be at the end of it is... I'm still getting my head around it, honestly, but it's very cool. It's extremely cool."

It's also a reunion of sorts for Stevenson, who previously worked on She-Ra and the Princesses of Power for Netflix from 2018 to 2020. Both series dealt with LGBTQ+ themes and strong female leads, and during Stevenson's interview with ComicBook.com, we asked him what he thought would happen if the two properties got to cross over.

"Oh my God. I don't think the world would survive," Stevenson joked. "I think that there would be a catastrophic...Yeah, that would be a lot of chaos in one place, but I think they'd get along. I think they would definitely burn something down, but they'd get along very well."

You can see the official synopsis for Nimona below.

A Knight is framed for a crime he didn't commit and the only person who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona, a shape-shifting teen who might also be a monster he's sworn to kill. Set in a techno-medieval world unlike anything animation has tackled before, this is a story about the labels we assign to people and the shapeshifter who refuses to be defined by anyone.

Nimona is now available to stream on Netflix.

Disney's 100th Anniversary: Studio Re-Releasing 8 Classic Movies in Theaters https://comicbook.com/movies/news/disneys-100th-anniversary-studio-re-releasing-8-classic-movies-in-theaters/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 01:07:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame f91f3540-a972-4a1f-aa62-456d63110203

Disney announced today that they will be relaunching eight beloved movies in theaters in the coming weeks, as part of their year-long 100th anniversary celebration. Each of the eight movies will have a 2-week re-release window, beginning on July 7 and ending in October. For some of these movies, it will be the first large-scale theatrical re-release. For years, prior to the rise of the home video market, Disney used to consistently rotate their animated classics and some of their other fan-favorites in and out of theaters pretty regularly -- and now that they are streaming everything on Disney+, it's distinctly possible we could see them returning to the "Disney vault" model on some titles to create artificial scarcity.

Launching on July 7 will be Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl. That title will be followed by Toy Story, Frozen, Beauty and the Beast, The Incredibles, Coco, The Lion King and Moana. Since all of the titles were released in the 1990s and beyond, it would not be surprising to find out Disney has plans for more titles starting in October and running through the rest of the year.

Given the anemic box office this year, it's entirely possible that some of these movies could perform better at the box office than their 2023 competition. It would be kind of wild, for instance, to see The Incredibles or Toy Story opening at #1 or #2 at the box office later this summer.

No word yet on what theaters will be participating in the re-releases. Expect an official announcement about that in the coming weeks.

Recently, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment announced they would debut a new platinum-style series of Disney100 4K UHD steelbooks and Blu-ray slipcovers. The Disney100 editions -- available exclusively at Best Buy and Walmart, respectively -- highlight some of the most treasured features from each studio's library, including The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Frozen, Encanto, and Pixar's Toy Story, Coco, and Cars.

The Disney100 Edition 4K steelbooks and Blu-ray slipcovers join the Disney100 Platinum Celebration Collection launched on shopDisney, featuring a platinum version of the iconic Mickey Mouse ear hat, a series of Disney "What If" comic book variant covers from Marvel Comics, and the Disney100 Funko Pop collection, celebrating iconic moments from such films as Walt Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, and Fantasia. The year's celebration officially kicks off with the Disney100 Anniversary Celebration at California's Disneyland Resort on January 27th.

Nimona Star Eugene Lee Yang Wants to Join Avatar: The Last Airbender (Exclusive) https://comicbook.com/anime/news/nimona-star-eugene-lee-yang-join-avatar-the-last-airbender-exclusive/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 23:16:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson ba5ca8e2-99db-4c8a-8e3d-97acdfa3a292

This week will bring the arrival of Nimona, the long-awaited film adaptation of ND Stevenson's graphic novel of the same name. Nimona enlists an all-star voice cast to bring its unconventional fantasy story to life, including actor and The Try Guys member Eugene Lee Yang. After appearances in Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Star Wars: Visions, Nimona marks Yang's biggest role yet -- and apparently, he has his sights set on another major franchise. While speaking to ComicBook.com about his role as Ambrosius Goldenloin in Nimona, Yang revealed that his dream is to join the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender in some way. This comes after Yang went viral in 2020 for cosplaying as several of the Avatar characters.

"Avatar The Last Airbender, full stop," Yang explained in our video, which you can check out above. "They know. We're talking a little bit, but talk about some queer world building. You got to get some queer people in it. That's pie in the sky for me. Pie in the sky."

Will There Be an Avatar: The Last Airbender Sequel?

This comes as the Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise is going strong, with a live-action adaptation set to hit Netflix in 2024. The future of the saga also includes a new animated film and a new animated series about the Earth Avatar.

What Is Nimona About?

In Nimona, when Ballister Boldheart (Riz Ahmed), a knight in a futuristic medieval world, is framed for a crime he didn't commit, the only one who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona (Chlo? Grace Moretz), a mischievous teen with a taste for mayhem -- who also happens to be a shapeshifting creature Ballister has been trained to destroy. But with the entire kingdom out to get him, Nimona's the best (or technically the only) sidekick Ballister can hope for. And as the lines between heroes, villains, and monsters start to blur, the two of them set out to wreak serious havoc -- for Ballister to clear his name once and for all, and for Nimona to...just wreak serious havoc. Nimona is directed by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane. The film also stars Eugene Lee Yang as Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin, Frances Conroy as The Director, and Beck Bennett as Sir Thoddeus Sureblade.

"I'm so fortunate to have the opportunity to work on this project and the fact that it's Goldenloin was hugely important," Yang said elsewhere in our interview. "And I think that they saw that I had a lot of experience personally that is reflected in the themes that Goldenloin's journey inhabits, duty versus love. That's the story of my life. So I think that that was something that I jumped at the chance to be able to lend that to his perspective."

Demon Slayer Short Hypes New Seasons With This Infinity Castle Adaptation https://comicbook.com/anime/news/demon-slayer-fan-animation-infinity-castle/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 22:04:00 +0000 Evan Valentine acc6eb41-d15f-41d5-8296-26a8ebfd46a1

Demon Slayer's third season took fans deep into the Swordsmith Village Arc, with season 2 exploring both the Mugen Train Arc and the Entertainment District Arc. While Tanjiro and his allies were able to defeat the Upper Moons 4 and 5, it has placed them in the sights of the demon lord Muzan. Specifically wanting Nezuko thanks to her newfound ability to survive in the sun, the Demon Slayer Corps has already been confirmed for a fourth season, but one fan animator didn't want to wait.

The next storyline that has been confirmed for Demon Slayer's anime adaptation is the "Hashira Training Arc", in which Tanjiro and his friends, Inosuke and Zenitsu, will undergo the most rigorous training of their young careers. In an effort to become Hashira themselves, they'll train alongside the top members of the Demon Slayer Corps as they attempt to not just earn the new titles, but survive the experience. Of course, during this upcoming arc, Muzan is hellbent on capturing Nezuko in order to steal her ability to survive in direct sunlight. Unfortunately for Tanjiro's sister, Muzan is looking to eat her in an effort to make himself even more powerful.

The Infinity Castle Arc Animated

Obviously, if you are only following along with the anime, you might want to turn back now as the fan animation dives into some major spoilers for areas that will be covered by the Demon Slayer anime adaptation. While Tanjiro and his friends have fought some terrifying demons so far, we have yet to see them take on the strongest that are creeping across the Earth. Luckily for the shonen protagonist, he'll get some big help from the Hashira.

At present, Ufotable has yet to reveal when the fourth season of Demon Slayer will arrive, outside of confirming that production has begun. When the Infinity Castle Arc does arrive, it will be the penultimate arc before the final fight begins, meaning there aren't too many more storylines before Demon Slayer comes to an end. Regardless of when the Demon Slayer Corps does journey forth for the last time, the ending will be a major event in the anime world.

What do you think of this fan animation? Do you think the Infinity Castle will be a part of the fourth season? Feel free to let us know in the comments or hit me up directly on Twitter @EVComedy to talk all things comics, anime, and the world of the Demon Slayer Corps.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Update Accidentally Leaks DLC Surprise https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/pokemon-scarlet-violet-update-dlc-mew/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 22:01:00 +0000 Tyler Fischer e242ec3b-8e16-4707-81d2-bbdb1faccdbe

A new Pokemon Scarlet and Violet update was released last night via Nintendo Switch but it didn't do much to the pair of games. That said, while not much is different about Scarlet and Violet post update there is some interesting things brewing under the hood. In other words, the files of the update has shed light on the game's upcoming DLC, The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero, which consists of The Teal Mask and The Indigo Disk, two separate releases coming in Q3 2023 and Q4 2023, respectively.

In the files of the new update there is mention of not just Mew, but some new Mew content presumably arriving with one of the two DLC releases. More specifically, in the files is now the following thread: "Mew is going to go all out against this formidable opponent!" Unfortunately, this is the extent of the leak. The files suggest this is some type of battle, but it's not entirely clear if Mew is the opponent or an AI teammate. However, there are rumors that there is going to be a 7-Star Tera Raid battle against Mighty Mewtwo. If this is the case, then it's very possible Mew is an NPC helping you in this battle.

Of course, this is a leak, so take it with a grain of salt. And this goes doubly for the speculation that it's created. There's no denying Mew is referenced in the newly-added files, but this could be leftover code or it could be something in the works for the DLC right now, but that doesn't mean it will survive until release. Things change and content is cut all the time in game development.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet is available via Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, and Nintendo Switch OLED. For more coverage on the pair of recent Pokemon games -- including all of the latest news, rumors, leaks, and speculation -- click here.

"Pokemon Scarlet and Violet is the most ambitious and forward-thinking Pokemon game yet, but suffers from some frustrating graphics and technical features," reads the opening of our review of the game. "The new Pokemon games represent a transition to the franchise's ninth generation of games and the first to truly feature an open world able to be explored however a player wishes. It continues a nearly decade-long evolution for the Pokemon games produced by Game Freak, with each set of games increasingly deviating from the time-worn formula set by the original Pokemon Red and Green games 25 years ago. But while Pokemon Scarlet and Violet is truly a wonder to behold as a Pokemon game, it struggles to meet even the relatively basic graphical standards for a modern video game."

Attack on Titan Creator Expected the Series to End in Under 5 Volumes https://comicbook.com/anime/news/attack-on-titan-anime-manga-length/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 21:50:00 +0000 Megan Peters dbf57106-ee5c-4d98-b3d3-1450707f83cc

It is hard to imagine a world where Attack on Titan never had its reign. Created in 2009, Hajime Isayama brought Eren Yeager to the world with a wash of drama and bloodshed. Of course, the manga is now over as the anime's tenure is on the horizon. No one is more emotional over this end than Isayama himself, but in a recent interview, the artist admitted he wasn't confident Attack on Titan would last.

The update comes from K Manga, Kodansha Comics' own manga library app. The service launched a special interview with Isayama to celebrate its ongoing release, and it was there fans heard from the creator firsthand. When asked about the ending of Attack on Titan, Isayama admitted he was unsure whether the manga would last five volumes if that.

"I thought about this storyline from the beginning. Of course, not in great detail, but I thought about the general flow," he shared (via AttackOnFans).

"At first, the story was highly likely to finish in two volumes. I was so desperate over whether the serialization would continue. After gaining some popularity, I thought about the desperate ending. I had that story in mind initially, but I started to question that direction."

So there you have it from Isayama himself. The creator had high hopes for Attack on Titan, but the manga industry is a competitive place. It is hard to stand out, so as Isayama began working on Attack on Titan, he began plotting out a finale that could fit in two volumes. Thankfully, the Attack on Titan manga was given much more room to grow, but Isayama's desperate ending did find a way yet to reach fans.

If you have not read Attack on Titan, you can always catch up. The series the is available through K Manga if you like to rent titles while digital copies can be found at most online booksellers. For more info on Isayama's hit series, you can read the official synopsis of Attack on Titan below:

"In this post-apocalytpic sci-fi story, humanity has been devastated by the bizarre, giant humanoids known as the Titans. Little is known about where they came from or why they are bent on consuming mankind. Seemingly unintelligent, they have roamed the world for years, killing everyone they see. For the past century, what's left of man has hidden in a giant, three-walled city. People believe their 50-meter-high walls will protect them from the Titans, but the sudden appearance of an immense Titan is about to change everything."

Jujutsu Kaisen Announces Special Live-Action Project https://comicbook.com/anime/news/jujutsu-kaisen-anime-live-action-promo/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 21:10:00 +0000 Megan Peters 2c531bed-cc89-454f-98a6-6db276e90604

Jujutsu Kaisen is on the cusp of a big comeback. It has been a good while since we were reunited with Gojo Satoru on the small screen. Following the success of Jujutsu Kaisen 0, MAPPA has been hard at work on season two, and soon it will go live. So to celebrate, it seems Jujutsu Kaisen has pulled together a special live-action project that will liven up Gojo's world.

The update comes courtesy of Jujutsu Kaisen itself on Twitter. The anime took to social media to inform fans that a special promo is in production overseas. It turns out the series is working on a live-action TV commercial. The big project is being made to celebrate the release of Jujutsu Kaisen volume 23 along with the manga's recent sale milestone.

And what is that milestone, you might ask? It is one worth noting. After all, Jujutsu Kaisen has sold more than 80 million copies to date which ranks it above hits like Fairy Tail, Tokyo Revengers, and even Berserk. At its current pace, Jujutsu Kaisen is tied with manga like Fullmetal Alchemist, and it is gaining on My Hero Academia and Hunter x Hunter to name a few.

Of course, this live-action promo has plenty to celebrate, but it marks a first in and of itself. After all, Jujutsu Kaisen has yet to tackle the world of live-action film. This promo may just recreate scenery from the Jujutsu Kaisen manga, but there is a chance some lucky actor will get to bring Megumi or even Nobara to life. So for now, fans will have to wait and see what this promo brings.

Are you caught up with Jujutsu Kaisen? If not, no sweat! You can find all of season one streaming on Crunchyroll. As for season two, Jujutsu Kaisen is slated to return on July 5th. So if you need more details on the series, you can read its official synopsis below:

"For some strange reason, Yuji Itadori, despite his insane athleticism would rather just hang out with the Occult Club. However, her soon finds out that the occult is as real as it gets when his fellow club members are attacked! Meanwhile, the mysterious Megumi Fushiguro is tracking down a special-grade cursed object, and his search leads him to Itadori..."

Squid Game Creator Earned Little From Show Despite Grossing Netflix $900 Million https://comicbook.com/anime/news/squid-game-creator-low-salary-netflix-profits/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 20:50:00 +0000 Evan Valentine e97cdc57-b889-490f-a608-9b6975068a3f

It's difficult to dispute that Squid Game has become a serious money maker for Netflix. In fact, the South Korean-made juggernaut has netted the streaming service over nine hundred million dollars since its premiere, helping to not only usher in a second season confirmation, but a reality show challenge to boot. Unfortunately, it would seem that the creator of the runaway hit, Hwang Dong-hyuk, has seen none of the wild profits that Netflix has received since Squid Game hit the platform in 2021.

According to a new report by the LA Times, Dong-hyuk was merely paid a flat fee when he sold his series to Netflix, meaning that he hasn't been able to score any residuals from the high profits that Squid Game saw. The contract that the Squid Game creator signed also forfeited his rights to all intellectual property related to the killer game. Dong-hyuk did win an Emmy for the first season of Squid Game and is set to return as both director and Executive Producer for the upcoming second season.

Squid Game Creator's Comments on Pay

When Squid Games hit the scene, Hwang said the following to The Guardian when it came to his original payment from the streaming service, "I'm not that rich. But I do have enough. I have enough to put food on the table. And it's not like Netflix is paying me a bonus. Netflix paid me according to the original contract."

Squid Game has seen quite a bit of controversy as of late, not just thanks to the television series, but the Netflix reality show, "Squid Game: The Challenge". The series, arriving on the streaming platform later this year, houses 456 contestants looking to participate in games similar to the ones seen in the Korean drama. With contestants airing their grievances of poor working conditions and some even stating that the reality game show was rigged, the controversies haven't stopped Netflix's plans of bringing the series to its service in 2023.

Netflix did respond to the LA Times story, stating the following in relation to Dong-hyuk's original compensation, "We pay fair, highly competitive rates with our K-Content creators and set clear standards for our Korean production partners, who produce all our shows and movies. These standards meet or exceed Korean law."

Nimona Directors Call Long-Awaited Film the "Best Project" They've Ever Worked On https://comicbook.com/anime/news/nimona-directors-call-long-awaited-film-the-best-project-theyve-ever-worked-on/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 19:50:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame b39359e8-3dd9-4543-a235-3cbec93f79a3

It has been years since development on Netflix's Nimona started, but now that the project is a reality, directors Nick Bruno and Troy Quane are saying it's the best project they have ever worked on, and that they're excited to finally see it brought to life. Nimona -- based on the graphic novel by She-Ra and the Princesses of Power producer ND Stevenson -- centers on a shape-shifting teen in a medieval world that also has elements of technology and mysticism in it. Stevenson is on board as writer and producer, helping to shepherd the project at Netflix, and presumably keeping options open in case the streamer decides to make more.

"Yeah, this has been honestly the best project we've ever been a part of," Bruno told ComicBook.com. "We've worked on a lot of animated films, but this one is not just fun, it's not just exciting, it's saying something and saying something important. And for us, the message is really just get to know people. We live in a world that judges people and holds some people down, and there's a lot of misunderstood people out there who could really benefit from just people getting to know them."

"I really think the journey of the movie is the journey of the story. In a weird way, it refused to die," Quande added. "There was people who see the truth in it, see the beauty in it, and just helped us keep picking up and fighting for it. And we're so excited that it's finally here."

Nimona is currently streaming on Netflix.

Nimona Creator ND Stevenson Jokes She-Ra Crossover Would Bring "Chaos" https://comicbook.com/anime/news/nimona-creator-nd-stevenson-jokes-she-ra-crossover-would-bring-chaos/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 19:48:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 907e5136-d27e-4460-ad54-0fb30406da6e

Netflix's Nimona just dropped, and the movie -- based on the graphic novel by ND Stevenson -- has more than a little shared DNA with She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, the cult-favorite animated series that ran on the platform from 2018 until 2020. Stevenson, who developed the 2018 version of She-Ra, is also bringing his own graphic novel to life, and so of course, fans are wondering about the relative compatibility of the swords, sorcery, and girl power-centric worlds of the two shows. Stevenson says it would be "chaos" to try and cross the two over -- although it doesn't seem like chaos is something that is automatically a bad thing in context.

The new film debuted last week, and centers on a shape-shifting teen in a medieval world that also has elements of technology and mysticism in it. So, there's already a lot going on even before you throw in the big lore and even bigger personalities of the She-Ra characters.

"Oh my God. I don't think the world would survive," Stevenson joked. "I think that there would be a catastrophic...Yeah, that would be a lot of chaos in one place, but I think they'd get along. I think they would definitely burn something down, but they'd get along very well."

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power rebooted the classic 1985 cartoon. First born from the Masters of the Universe franchise, She-Ra stood in as the female counterpart to He-Man in the 1980s. Created by Larry DeTillio and J. Michael Straczynski, She-Ra has become a favorite pop culture icon, and DreamWorks revitalized her by reimagining her origins through Stevenson's show.

The show followed Adora, a teenage orphan from the Planet Etheria, who discovers she is a Princess of Power. After learning about her She-Ra alter-ego, she begins gathering all the separated Princesses of Power in order to liberate her planet from Hordak and his sinister Horde.

Tokyo Ghoul Cosplay Honors Ghoulish Ken Kaneki https://comicbook.com/anime/news/tokyo-ghoul-cosplay-ken-kaneki/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 19:12:00 +0000 Evan Valentine 38d2353e-66e7-4ef8-9b18-5f953493aa19

Tokyo Ghoul:re was the last time that anime fans were able to experience an anime adventure focusing on the ghoulish protagonist known as Ken Kaneki. Despite the fact that a new anime series hasn't arrived for five years, the anime franchise continues to emerge in some unexpected places. Now, one fan has created a cosplay that shows Kaneki at his most powerful, and most ghoulish.

Like the series Jujutsu Kaisen, Bleach, and Yu Yu Hakusho, Tokyo Ghoul is able to inject some serious horror elements into its action-packed premise. Despite the previous anime series ending in 2018, Ken Kaneki has managed to return thanks to video games and live-action movies that revisited the original story that brought the ghoulish protagonist to life. While Ken might be on the light side of the aisle, his appearance makes him look like anything but.

Tokyo Ghoul: Ken's Comeback

In a recent interview with Animania and Manga Passion, Tokyo Ghoul's creator, Sui Ishida, shared the surprising fact that he didn't consider his successful series to be a success himself. Explaining in further details, here's how Ishida broke down his thoughts, "As far as the premise is concerned, I don't really consider Tokyo Ghoul a success. For me, success is when I get the feeling that I drew something good. When I think about it, I don't actually demand for it to be well received in society or that many people like it. So success for me is whether I can praise myself for it or not."

If you haven't had the opportunity to explore the supernatural world of Ken Kaneki, you can catch the anime streaming on Hulu and Crunchyroll. Here's how Shonen Jump describes the series, "Ghouls live among us, the same as normal people in every way - except their craving for human flesh. Shy Ken Kaneki is thrilled to go on a date with the beautiful Rize. But it turns out that she's only interested in his body eating it, that is. When a morally questionable rescue transforms him into the first half-human half-Ghoul hybrid, Ken is drawn into the dark and violent world of Ghouls, which exists alongside our own."

Do you think we'll one day see Ken Kaneki return with a new anime series? What have you thought of Sui Ishida's new manga, Choujin X? Feel free to let us know in the comments or hit me up directly on Twitter @EVComedy to talk all things comics, anime, and the world of Tokyo Ghoul.

Gundam: The Witch From Mercury Brings Its Mech to Life With Epic LEGO Build https://comicbook.com/anime/news/gundam-the-witch-from-mercury-lego-build/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 18:42:00 +0000 Evan Valentine 50752eb0-69cb-4261-a0b4-759067cf8113

Gundam plastic models are one of the hottest ticket items in the anime world. Since first premiering in the 1970s, the Gundam franchise has sold over five hundred million units when it comes to Gunplas. In a recent report, Bandai Namco even confirmed that the Gundam models had helped the franchise to be one of the highest-selling anime properties for the company. While an official Gundam Aerial Lego set hasn't been made available, that didn't stop one Gundam fan from making an iteration of Suletta Mercury's favorite mech.

The Gundam Aerial is the forerunner when it comes to the latest Gundam season, The Witch From Mercury. Unlike other story arcs and season under the anime's banner, the Gundams in the recent storyline are outlawed by the forces that be running the universe. Despite the fact that the mechs aren't allowed, the main anime protagonist has managed to rely on her robotic suit more times than we can count. Next month, Suletta's second season will come to an end as Bandai Namco Filmworks has been hyping up the season 2 finale. At present, a third season has yet to be confirmed, though considering the popularity of the latest arc, we might see Suletta Mercury return.

Gundam Legos When

One Gundam fan took the opportunity to bypass the plastic models and created the Gundam Aerial using Legos. While Suletta's mech holds a few similarities to the look of the original suit that started it all in the original series, The Witch From Mercury's mech has plenty of personality of its own. There's a reason why it became one of the top-selling Gunplas in a short amount of time.

Suletta's journey isn't the only anime project in the franchise's future. Mobile Suit Gundam has found itself able to maintain its longevity thanks to introducing plenty of new stories placing the mechs in unique scenarios. Despite The Witch From Mercury's popularity, expect the mechs of the series to make appearances in new realities in the future as Gundam remains Japan's most popular mech series for a reason.

Do you want an official Gundam Lego set released in the future? What is your favorite Gunpla released to date? Feel free to let us know in the comments or hit me up directly on Twitter @EVComedy to talk all things comics, anime, and the world of mechs.

One Piece Creator Hypes Egghead Arc With First Promo https://comicbook.com/anime/news/one-piece-creator-new-egghead-arc-promo/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 18:02:00 +0000 Evan Valentine 7039b65a-0d3e-445a-9da6-9d2108777d39

The final saga of One Piece is playing out in its manga. While the series continues to follow Luffy and his crew, it has also had the opportunity to throw in some major revelations when it comes to the like of Sabo, King Cobra, Buggy, and many others. One of the biggest reveals was the information held by Dr. Vegapunk, the mad scientist who perhaps knew more about Devil Fruit than any human being alive and now, creator Eiichiro Oda has created new art to honor the latest storyline.

In many of One Piece's arc, the Straw Hat Pirates will sometimes sport new outfits based on their surroundings. When they entered the isolated nation known as Wano Country, Luffy and his crew wore attire that looked closer to feudalistic Japan than their usual outfits. When arriving on Egghead Island, the home of Dr. Vegapunk and his laboratory, the Straw Hats wore futuristic attire that is shown off in the new promo image by Luffy and Nami specifically. When it comes to the anime adaptation, we might not see the outfits arrive in 2023 as the War For Wano continues, but if the television series continues following the source material, we'll one day see the Egghead outfits make their animated debut.

One Piece Egghead Promo

In honoring the new arc of One Piece's final saga, creator Eiichiro Oda placed Luffy and Nami side-by-side in their new attire. Luckily, both the Straw Hat Pirates and Dr. Vegapunk were able to make it off the island alive, but they still have some major challenges ahead. With the world government and several swashbucklers gunning for them, expect the final saga to potentially be the biggest arc of the series to date.

One of the most anticipated moments for the War For Wano Arc playing out in the anime is Luffy's Gear Fifth transformation. While already appearing a number of times in the manga and making a brief appearance in the latest film, One Piece Film: Red, its television debut date remains a mystery. Needless to say, the animators of the series will have their work cut out for them when it comes to bringing Luffy's ultimate transformation to life.

What do you think of the Straw Hats' new outfits? Do you think Dr. Vegapunk will evade the World Government? Feel free to let us know in the comments or hit me up directly on Twitter @EVComedy to talk all things comics, anime, and the world of the Grand Line.

Oshi no Ko Goes Viral Thanks to a Special K-pop Tribute https://comicbook.com/anime/news/oshi-no-ko-anime-kpop-idol-billie/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 17:26:00 +0000 Megan Peters 96c5d51d-ac2c-4d44-9ed1-9d174fcfa254

Oshi no Ko has become a force to reckon with. If you did not know, the hit idol anime came to a close this week as season one rolled out its finale. The big update put Ai Hoshino on the map, and of course, the entire anime fandom is embracing the violet-haired idol. This is true for fans of all sorts, and thanks to a new tribute, we know one K-pop idol is just as in love with Ai as we are.

The treat comes courtesy of Billlie, one of South Korea's up-and-coming girl groups. Taking to TikTok, one of its singers Tsuki decided to play with a now-viral filter that turns users into Ai. As you can see below, the filter gives Tsuki a familiar purple hair style, and the K-pop idol is seen singing along with YAOSOBI's hit single "Idol".

@billlie.official

??? ??? ?? ???!?? #TSUKI #?? #Billlie #??

? ???? - YOASOBI

Of course, fans are loving this crossover because it isn't every day you see an idol pay homage to an anime idol. Tsuki has shown just how popular Oshi no Ko has become even with fans outside of Japan, but for anime lovers, this news is hardly a surprise. Oshi no Ko has been breaking records since its release, so this tribute was all but assured.

After all, Oshi no Ko broke records in the United States with its debut. The anime's extended premiere brought in record viewers to HIDIVE and gave the streaming service its biggest premiere to date. As for its music, Oshi no Ko has also taken over the Billboard charts. Between it and Oricon, "Idol" has over 200 million streams to date, and TikTok has only fueled its popularity with trends.

If you are not familiar with Oshi no Ko, the anime is streaming season one in full through HIDIVE. A second season was just announced, so for those wanting more info on Oshi no Ko, you can read its official synopsis below:

"Gorou is an ob-gyn with a life far removed from the glitz and glamour of the entertainment industry-the world of his favorite idol, rising star Ai Hoshino. But when the two are unexpectedly brought together, their fates become intertwined in ways that defy all reason. For the good doctor, it's time to stan(d) and deliver!"

My Hero Academia to Bring Life-Sized All Might And All For One to SDCC https://comicbook.com/anime/news/my-hero-academia-comic-con-life-size-all-might-all-for-one/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 17:22:00 +0000 Evan Valentine 81e5be7d-21bb-4116-94ff-0fe6189b542f

My Hero Academia's final arc is underway in the pages of the shonen's manga, but that isn't stopping the franchise from revisiting some of its biggest moments. While San Diego Comic-Con is usually the place for major announcements in the world of North American comic books and the projects that are spawned from them, anime is finding its way into the annual event. For this year's convention, My Hero Academia will be there in full effect and has a life-sized statue portraying one of its biggest battles.

The battle in question will be the fight between All Might and All For One that took place in My Hero Academia Season 3. As a result of this killer conflict, the former Symbol of Peace found himself losing the vast majority of his strength, relegated to the role of a teacher at UA Academy rather than a frontline combatant. Luckily, All Might was able to claim victory against All For One, but the main villain has recently returned in both the anime and manga. With the final chapter playing out in the shonen's manga, it would seem that a re-match featuring All Mgiht and All For One is right around the corner.

All Might Vs. All For One Rematch

Here's how Crunchyroll describes the statue that will be erected at this year's San Diego Comic-Con International, "The statue of the "Historical Battle in Kamino" from "My Hero Academia" is a stunning representation of the epic fight between All Might and All For One in Season 3 Episode 48. By capturing this iconic moment, the statue showcases the artistry and significance of the My Hero Academia franchise, providing fans with an opportunity to relive the excitement and celebrate their love for the series."

The dynamic statue will arrive as a part of the Comic-Con Museum, which will open its doors on Tuesday, July 18th. Open until Sunday, July 23rd, anime fans will have a few days to check out the battle featuring My Hero Academia's big combatants. With My Hero Academia Season 7 in the works and Kohei Horikoshi looking to end Class 1-A's journey, big things are ahead for Deku and company.

Which anime battles would you like to see re-created via a life-sized statue? Do you think All Might and All For One's re-match in the manga will be the biggest battle of the series to date? Feel free to let us know in the comments or hit me up directly on Twitter @EVComedy to talk all things comics, anime, and the world of UA Academy.

It looks like Undead Unluck is gearing up for a big debut. This fall will welcome the release of Yoshifumi Tozuka's popular manga as it heads to the screen. Now, we have just learned where the Undead Unluck anime will be streaming, and it turns out Hulu secured the rights.

A new notice from the streaming service confirmed Undead Unluck will stream exclusively on Hulu in the United States. The show is slated to debut as a Hulu Original this October, so this anime is another big get for the brand.

After all, Undead Unluck is one of this year's most-anticipated series. The show piqued curiosity when it was announced TMS was producing it alongside Studio David, the animation studio behind JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and Fire Force. From what we've seen of Undead Unluck so far, its bright colors and bold line art look great, so the anime has big expectations weighing up on it.

Now if you are not familiar with Undead Unluck, the series got its start at Shonen Jump under Tozuka a few years back. The ongoing title can be read courtesy of Viz Media if you'd like to meet Fuuko and Andy for yourself. So if you need more info on the hit series, you can read the synopsis of Undead Unluck below:

"All Fuuko wants is a passionate romance like the one in her favorite shojo manga. Unfortunately, her Unluck ability makes that impossible. But just as Fuuko hits rock bottom, Andy sweeps her off her feet-literally! Now she's become Andy's unwilling test subject as he works to find a way to trigger a stroke of Unluck big enough to kill him for good. However, when the pair discovers a secret organization is hunting them, it puts Andy's burial plans on hold."

Attack on Titan Creator Reveals Their Favorite Moment From the Series https://comicbook.com/anime/news/attack-on-titan-creator-hajime-isayama-favorite-moment/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 16:44:00 +0000 Evan Valentine de2c0614-c41c-4f97-8a17-ac18b16b9dd0

Attack on Titan has made a name for itself thanks to its brutal scenes and shocking reveals. First debuting as a manga from artist Hajime Isayama, the mangaka has been making the rounds to discuss the series in the wake of its manga finale. With this fall set to release the final episode of Attack on Titan's anime adaptation, Isayama recently participated in an interview in which the mangaka described his favorite scene from the series that is known for its eye-popping revelations.

Without letting the cat out of the bag too soon, the favorite moment from Isayama does involve Reiner, aka the Armored Titan. While first appearing as one of the Scout Regiment's most powerful soldiers, it was revealed that not only was he an agent for the Marley nation, but was none other than the Armored Titan that helped bring down the walls in Attack on Titan's first anime episode. Of course, as is the case with many characters in the series, Reiner was revealed to be quite a complicated character who was struggling with the decisions he made in the past and grappled with what he was meant to do in the future.

Attack on Titan: Reiner's Reveal

As a part of the K MANGA launch part, Isayama revealed that his favorite moment from Attack on Titan was when Reiner and Bertholdt revealed that they were the Armored and Colossal Titans respectively. The moment in question almost came out of nowhere, throwing anime fans for a loop in its blunt delivery. Here's how Isayama breaks down his admiration for the earth-shattering reveal, "It's when Reiner reveals his true self. I was in Kodansha's storyboarding room when that scene came to me after thinking at my desk for hours. I was very excited when I came up with the idea. I have a deep attachment to how I made that great scene."

While a specific release date has yet to be revealed for Attack on Titan's final episode, the anime adaptation has confirmed that the last installment will arrive this fall. Based on the horrific moments of the penultimate episode that dropped earlier this year, fans should expect some major deaths to take place before the series ends. Isayama has been quite adamant that the series won't return for a sequel and/or spin-off, though the director's cut for the final chapter certainly leaves the door open for a potential return to the universe.

New Spice and Wolf Anime Announced https://comicbook.com/anime/news/spice-and-wolf-new-anime-2024/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 16:22:00 +0000 Evan Valentine f5719b24-b61a-4191-b969-128f13a3a2f8

Spice And Wolf first premiered in 2006, and while the franchise might not be a mover and shaker in a similar fashion as some major shonen series, it has warranted quite a few projects since its debut. While a new anime project was hinted at last year, the story of a merchant and a wolf-deity traveling the world has confirmed that a new television series will land next year. Alongside the confirmation, Studio Passione shared a new trailer and a new poster, along with some surprising returns from the original 2008 anime series.

Spice And Wolf: Merchant Meets The Wise Wolf will be the full title for the series dropping next year. The project will be helmed by Studio Passione, who fans might know best for its work on the likes of Mieruko-Chan, Interspecies Reviewers, and High School DxD Hero to name a few. The upcoming series will also bring back voice actors Jun Fukuyama and Ami Koshimizu, who voiced protagonists Kraft Lawrence and Holo in the original anime adaptation. A release date has yet to be revealed outside of the 2024 window at present.

Spice And Wolf Return

(Photo: Passione)

If you haven't had the opportunity to check out the original light novel series, here's an official description for Spice and Wolf, "The life of a traveling merchant is a lonely one, a fact with which Kraft Lawrence is well acquainted. Wandering from town to town with just his horse, cart, and whatever wares have come his way, the peddler has pretty well settled into his routine--that is, until the night Lawrence finds a wolf goddess asleep in his cart. Taking the form of a fetching girl with wolf ears and a tail, Holo has wearied of tending to harvests in the countryside and strikes up a bargain with the merchant to lend him the cunning of "Holo the Wisewolf" to increase his profits in exchange for taking her along on his travels. What kind of businessman could turn down such an offer? Lawrence soon learns, though, that having an ancient goddess as a traveling companion can be a bit of a mixed blessing. Will this wolf girl turn out to be too wild to tame?"

Are you hyped for the return of the traveling merchant and his accompanying deity? Are you glad to see the original voice actors returning to the franchise? Spider-Verse Manga Makeover Gives Gwen the Shonen Treatment https://comicbook.com/anime/news/spider-man-spider-verse-2-gwen-stacy-anime-manga-shonen-artwork/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 16:00:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw 2da1779a-1658-4519-b510-1c2102acc112

The Spider-Man Spider-Verse animated film series has put a worldwide blockbuster spotlight on just how glorious the influence of manga/anime is on the larger world of animated storytelling. Now things are swinging back the other way, as a fan artist has taken Spider-Verse's Gwen Stacy and given her the Shonen manga treatment!

As you can see below, artist @A2TwillDraw took Gwen Stacy's likeness on a journey from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse through the styles of the biggest shonen series out there, including the following:

  • Bleach
  • Dragon Ball Z
  • One Piece
  • Naruto
  • Demon Slayer
  • JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
  • Attack On Titan

@A2TwillDraw also included his own visual style in the mix, which actually wasn't bad at all!

As stated, the animated Spider-Verse movies have clearly carried an anime influence in their DNA. The Oscar-winning first film, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, acknowledged as much by including the character Peni Parker, aka SP//dr (voiced by Kimiko Glenn), in the ranks of the multiversal team Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson) put together. That was a major signal flare to anime fans that their genre was getting love from this franchise.

Peni Parker doesn't really appear in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse that much - appearing with the rest of the original Spider-Verse team at the very end, to set up an arc in the third film. Across the Spider-Verse decided to expand its focus to the larger global scope of animation, capturing everything from Spider-Man 2099's sleek future world to Spider-Man India's colorful style and design aesthetic.

What Is Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse About?

Miles Morales returns to the big screen with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse now playing in theaters after premiering on June 2nd. Miles (Shamiek Moore) reunites with fellow heroes Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld) and Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson) for another web-swinging adventure through the multiverse, finding himself at odds with the Spider-Society led by Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac). Other new heroes include Spider-Woman Jessica Drew (Issa Rae), Spider-Punk (Daniel Kaluuya), and Pavitr Prabhakar (Karan Soni), while new villain the Spot (Jason Schwartzman) also enters the fray. The sequel to Sony Pictures' hit 2018 film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson, and written by the team of Chris Miller, Phil Lord, and Dave Callaham.

Kuromi Announces Special L.A. Appearance https://comicbook.com/anime/news/kuromi-sanrio-anime-expo-appearance/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 15:49:00 +0000 Evan Valentine 76310013-52a3-4b9f-a77b-1a792cfa26a1

Sanrio is a Japanese entertainment company that has created hundreds of adorable characters since it first opened its doors in 1960. While the albino kitten known as Hello Kitty might be the most popular of the many colorful creatures that Sanrio has spawned, there are plenty more characters that have garnered some major attention. With Anime Expo 2023 arriving in Los Angeles, California later this week, it seems that one Sanrio's most popular characters will be wandering the convention floor for con-goers to find.

Kuromi, for those who might not be familiar with the ominous white rabbit, first made her presence known in the anime series, Onegai My Melody in 2005. While she might seem cute, Kuromi is actually the leader of a biker gang that is appropriately named "Kurmoi's 5". Most recently, Sanrio gave the hard-edged mascot her own series in Kurmoi's Pretty Journey, which recently brought an English Dub to Sanrio's Official Youtube Channel. The official description of the series reads as such, "A photo was sent to Kuromi. It was a photo of her sister Romina, who had gone missing. Kuromi is desperate to see her sister again! Will she be able to find Romina?"

Kuromi's Anime Expo Appearance

While Kuromi will be appearing at Anime Expo on July 1st, she won't be in a confirmed location. In promoting the Sanrio mascot's upcoming appearance this week in Los Angeles, the convention has started a hashtag, "WhereIsKuromi", encouraging fans to find the mascot on the convention floor. It has yet to be seen whether the Expo will have news when it comes to the Sanrio favorite.

Aside from the likes of Hello Kitty and Kuromi, Sanrio made waves recently with the conclusion of the fan-favorite series on Netflix, Aggretsuko. Though the series came to an end following its fifth season, Retsuko's story proved how versatile Sanrio can be by telling a story focusing on an office worker attempting to get her life figured out. With Hello Kitty being one of the most popular characters in the world, it will be interesting to see whether any other Sanrio character can ever overtake the mascot.

Who is your favorite Sanrio character? What has been the biggest announcement for Anime Expo so far? Feel free to let us know in the comments or hit me up directly on Twitter @EVComedy to talk all things comics, anime, and the world of Sanrio.

Jujutsu Kaisen Has Sold 80 Million Copies Ahead of Season 2 https://comicbook.com/anime/news/jujutsu-kaisen-manga-sales-80-million/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 15:09:00 +0000 Evan Valentine ee494f13-fad0-4587-8cee-7aaf489ca392

For most anime franchises, a manga series will see a significant increase in sales once an anime adaptation has been released. Normally, overall sales will fluctuate based on how well-received said adaptation has become, with the likes of My Hero Academia and Demon Slayer being two prime examples of Shonen stories that saw a significant increase following their television debuts. Now, Jujutsu Kaisen has shattered a new record as fans prepare for the second season to arrive on the small screen next month.

Before getting into the nitty-gritty of the manga's sales, Jujutsu Kaisen's anime history is well worth revisiting. Following the first season from Studio MAPPA, the studio known for the likes of Attack on Titan Season 4, Hell's Paradise, and Chainsaw Man to name a few, the supernatural shonen also released a feature-length film in theaters. Jujutsu Kaisen 0, the prequel movie showing anime fans the story of Yuta Okkotsu, became one of the most popular anime movies of all time despite not starring the series protagonist Yuji Itadori. With the second season arriving on July 6th next month, the franchise will be once again taking viewers to the past by examining Gojo's early days as a student at Jujutsu Tech.

Jujutsu Kaisen: Manga Juggernaut

In a recent report from Weekly Shonen Jump, Jujutsu Kaisen currently has eighty million copies of its manga in circulation. To give you an idea of how the supernatural shonen series stacks up to other manga, My Hero Academia has eighty-five million copies in circulation, Fullmetal Alchemist has eighty million, and Yu Yu Hakusho has seventy-eight million. Considering that Jujutsu Kaisen has twenty-three volumes released since its debut, it's quite an achievement.

Jujutsu Kaisen first arrived in the pages of Weekly Shonen Jump in 2018, with its anime adaptation arriving two years later in 2020. Wasting little time in becoming a major player in the anime world, it's clear that the popularity of the anime has greatly influenced manga sales. As the manga series inches closer to its conclusion, according to creator Gege Akutami, there are plenty of major moments and battles that could spawn a number of seasons and/or movies in the future.

What do you think of Jujutsu Kaisen's increasing popularity? Are you hyped for the anime's return next month? Feel free to let us know in the comments or hit me up directly on Twitter @EVComedy to talk all things comics, anime, and the world of Jujutsu Tech.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot Leak Reveals End of Z Saga DLC https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/dragon-ball-z-kakarot-leak-end-of-z-uub-dlc/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 14:38:00 +0000 Tanner Dedmon 5811cf93-f71c-4ea8-bd9e-b8a6521db5bf

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot has its new story DLC based on the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai arc coming up with one more DLC after that to be included in the current season pass, and this week, we got a better idea of what that final Season Pass 2 DLC might be. According to a hint from a Dragon Ball Z insider who's had a strong track record so far with this sort of thing, the sixth DLC the game will get will be based around the "Peaceful World Saga" arc which is also referred to as "End of Z." There's no telling when that DLC will release, however, seeing how the upcoming tournament expansion doesn't even have a release date yet.

The Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot DLC leak in question comes from DbsHype, an insider who's been spot on about Dragon Ball Z news related to Kakarot DLC and other projects. The Twitter user talked briefly about the plans for the new Kakarot DLC this week and said it's "about to be amazing" while sharing two gifs that showed Goku and Uub together to give followers a hint as to what the new content will deal with.

So, why's this a surprising development? Those who've watched Dragon Ball Z will recall that this part of the overall series is notably short compared to other arcs. It's an epilogue of sorts for the Buu Saga and Dragon Ball Z overall and only consists of four episodes wherein we see the 28th World Martial Arts Tournament take place. The most notable part of the arc is Uub, the human reincarnation of Majin Buu, and while he's a recognizable character, his time in the story is similarly short.

That begs the question of how CyberConnect2 and Bandai Namco will handle that DLC, but the pair have announced surprising Kakarot DLC plans for the game in the past, too. Those include the upcoming 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai arc DLC which surprised those who were expecting the DLCs to go further into Dragon Ball Super or a different direction rather than backwards into Dragon Ball.

In response to this leak, someone asked DbsHype about rumored plans for Dragon Ball Super or Dragon Ball GT DLC plans for the game. The Dragon Ball Z insider responded to say that those comments that came from a different source were instead referring to the "Next Season Pass" for the game. If that's the case, that means that there's a Season Pass 3 on the way, though considering how long Bandai Namco supports its Dragon Ball Z games, that's almost less surprising, if true, than any one DLC announcement Bandai Namco could make.

Right now, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot has five different known DLCs. Those include A New Power Awakens Part 1, A New Power Awakens Part 2, and Trunks- The Warrior of Hope in the first season pass with Bardock - Alone Against Fate, Chaos at the World Tournament, and now the rumored Uub DLC included in Season Pass 2. The next announcement to be made is the release date for the Chaos at the World Tournament DLC, so it may be awhile before the sixth Kakarot DLC is confirmed.

Avatar: The Last Airbender: Quest for Balance Revealed https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/avatar-the-last-airbender-quest-for-balance-trailer-release-date/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 13:44:00 +0000 Tyler Fischer 9ddea8b9-53f7-45a8-bbba-3335fe47e2c8

After previously leaking, Avatar: The Last Airbender: Quest for Balance has been officially revealed for Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X. In development at Bamtag Games and being published by Game Mill Entertainment, Avatar: The Last Airbender: Quest for Balance is pitched as an action-adventure game that lets you play solo or via local and online two-player co-op as one of nine different characters from the series. Beyond this, a "fall" release window is mentioned, but not an actual and specific release date.

As you'd expect, the nine playable characters include Aang, Katara, Toph, and Sokka. Meanwhile, it's been teased that players will be able to play and replay 18 different chapters whenever you'd like to relive your favorites moments from the series whenever. Unfortunately, finer details about the game are currently scarce, but there are said to be side quests, character upgrades, various character interactions, and puzzles based on all four elements in the series: earth, wind, fire, and water.

As you can see in the trailer above, the game hasn't been made on the biggest budget nor does it boast the most impressive graphics. Of course, YouTube comments isn't a great place to gauge general interest, however, it's the best measuring tool we have at the moment, and right now, it's not looking great for the game as many have pointed out its obvious shortcomings.

"Why does every Avatar game look like it belongs on Nintendo DS or PS2? Imagine PS4 graphics like Ghost of Tsushima. The elements would look so beautiful," reads one of these comments. "The emotions and movements as well. With a skill tree. Skill tree for like fire daggers, ice shards, tornados and rockslides/earthquakes."

"Waited nearly two decades for them to make a PS2-era game in 2023 for one of the best animated series ever..," adds another comment with many votes up.

As always, feel free to leave a comment or two letting us know what you think. Are you interested in checking this one out when it releases later this year?

ATEEZ Reveals What Inspired Their New Music, Favorite Marvel Superheroes, and More https://comicbook.com/anime/news/ateez-reveals-what-inspired-their-new-music-favorite-marvel-superheroes-and-more/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 02:23:00 +0000 Matthew Aguilar 0643362c-f53f-435e-92dd-e81515d5e128

The wait for ATEEZ's anticipated new music is finally over, as The World Ep.2: Outlaw is finally out in the wild. With the additive track Bouncy leading the way, ATEEZ looks to have another collection of hits on their hands, and in the midst of their incredibly busy schedules ComicBook.com had the chance to speak to the group all about the new music, but that's not all. Hongjoong, Seonghwa, Yunho, Yeosang, San, Mingi, Wooyoung, and Jongho also happen to be Marvel fans, and so we couldn't pass up the opportunity to learn a bit more about their love of the Marvel Universe and the heroes that call it home.

First though we wanted to know about the first half of their latest tour, which featured stops in the United States, Europe, Seoul, and Japan. They are set to head to Asia and Latin America next, but for the first half, we wanted to know what their favorite memories from their experience so far and what they had taken away most from the tour.

(Photo: KQ Entertainment)

"Well, before all else, I want to say that we're always so happy to be able to go to so many countries and perform in front of fans that we don't get to see often," Hongjoong said. "In terms of what we take away, I think that comes naturally when we perform on stage, check over our performances, and communicate with the fans on tour. We learn from our performances and interactions to know what we can improve on and add to make it better. Besides that, some of my favorite memories come from the time during tours between shows when we can experience and enjoy the different places that ATINY live in first hand."

"I want to first thank all the ATINY who came out to see us," Wooyoung said. "There were some countries that we were visiting for the first time, so it was a very meaningful tour. We're so excited to see ATINY at our upcoming shows too!"

The World EP.2: Outlaw hit the ground running with the aptly titled Bouncy, a track that more than lives up to its name, and the track came together pretty organically. "BOUNCY is a song that came together really naturally. It's a track that was born out of the perfect combination of EDENARY's sound direction and ATEEZ's performance spectrum," Hongjoong said.

When we asked about interesting points to your new music overall, Yeosang said "I'd say an interesting point to our new music is how the words 'Cheongyang gochu (Cheongyang chili pepper)' was implemented into the song. It's a story that Hongjoong talked to me about before and it's actually really funny." Jongho said, "I guess I'd say the part where all the songs on this album have really different, but bold and strong colors."

Now, we had to talk a little Marvel, as there's a definitely love of the Marvel Universe and some of its most iconic heroes within the group. While there were a few picks, Spider-Man and Iron Man happened to come up the most, though there was also some love for Marvel's famed archer Hawkeye, and the Captain himself Captain America.

"Iron Man," Hongjoong said. "He's the first Marvel character I came across, and I love that he has his own sense of humor but maintains a weight to his words and actions." For Seonghwa, it was an easy answer. "Of course, it's Spider-Man! Yunho is a big fan, but I am, too. I watched the movie over five times," Seonghwa said. Yunho's answer also came easily, saying, "I am steadfast on Spider-Man. ATINY knows this about me too!"

"Iron Man is my favorite," Yeosang said. "I personally like robots and [*SPOILER ALERT*] I thought Iron Man was so brave and amazing when he sacrificed himself for everyone in the last fight with Thanos. For San, it's all about the star-spangled Avenger. "Captain America. There's something wonderful in the romance of his story," San said.

While Mingi isn't as big into Marvel, he does still appreciate one particular hero. "I'm not as into Marvel characters like the others, but I do like Hawkeye," Mingi said. "I like him because I think he's the most realistic amongst them."

Wooyoung keeps it simple, and you can't argue with the reasoning. "Iron Man," Wooyoung said. "For the simple reason that the suit is so cool!" Jongho agrees and for similar reasons. "I think I like Iron Man the most. I remember watching the scene when I was younger in one of the movies where Iron Man puts on his suit and I thought it was the coolest thing," Jongho said.

Mingi also added that if a Marvel hero were to get an anime, it would be Hawkeye he'd love to see in that spot. "Hawkeye. I think it'd be interesting to see an anime adaptation with a more realistic character from the Marvel series as a hero," Mingi said.

We've got more from our full interview with ATEEZ coming to ComicBook.com very soon, and you can listen to and download The World EP.2: OUTLAW in its entirety right here. You can also watch the official MV for Bouncy right here.

Do you want to see some ATEEZ and Marvel crossover down the line? Let us know in the comments!

Squid Game Season 2: Netflix Confirms 8 New Additions to Cast https://comicbook.com/anime/news/squid-game-season-2-netflix-cast-confirmed/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 00:49:00 +0000 Spencer Perry 3989372b-9ed4-4fe4-a9c0-33add04ae626

After confirming the first Squid Game season 2 cast at TUDUM, Netflix has announced the final new additions to the cast that will debut in the new episodes. New cast members for Squid Game season 2 include Park Gyu-young (Sweet Home, The Devil Judge), Jo Yu-ri (former member of South Korean-Japanese girl group Iz*One), Kang Ae-sim (Move to Heaven), Lee David (The Fortress), Lee Jin-uk (Sweet Home), Choi Seung-hyun (Tazza: The Hidden Card), Roh Jae-won (Missing Yoon) and Won Ji-an (Netflix's D.P.). The cast and crew for Squid Game assembled this week for a table read of the new episodes. Production on Squid Game season 2 is scheduled to begin later this year with director Hwang Dong-hyuk returning to direct and executive produce.

Netflix's previously confirmed cast for Squid Game season 2 include returning stars Lee Jung-jae (as Seong Gi-Hun), Lee Byung-Hun (as Front Man), Wi Ha-jun (as Hwang Jun-Ho), and Gong Yoo (as the currently unnamed recruiter for the games overall). They'll be joined by previously announced newcomers to Squid Game with Yim Si-Wan, Kang Ha-Neul, Park Sung-Hoon, and Yang Dong-Geun confirmed to take on new roles for season two on Netflix.

What is Squid Game season 2 about?

Netflix has yet to confirm actual plot details for Squid Game season 2, but the ending of the first batch of episodes offered big clues about where the story could go next. The first season concluded as Gi-Hun opted to take matters into his own hands and put off his plans to join his daughter in America, instead seeking revenge against the creators of Squid Game. One can perhaps assume that many of the new additions to the cast could include friends, foes, and almost certainly new contestants for the next Squid Game event. With production on Squid Game season 2 not taking place until later this year, a release date of late 2024 or maybe even early 2025 seems likely, but remains unconfirmed.

After its premiere Squid Game became an international hit and remains the most-watched Netflix original series of all-time. As of this writing Squid Game has been watched over 2.2 billion hours, beating out shows like Wednesday and Stranger Things that had a lot more marketing push behind them.

Squid Game was also a major hit at the Primetime Emmy awards. The Netflix hit became the first non-English language series to ever be nominated for an Emmy, earning fourteen nominations and winning six. Some of Squid Game's wins from last year include Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Lee Jung-jae and Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for Hwang Dong-hyuk.

Japan's Most Famous Cosplayer Takes on Oshi no Ko's Ai Hoshino https://comicbook.com/anime/news/oshi-no-ko-ai-hoshino-enako-anime-cosplay/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 00:42:00 +0000 Nick Valdez 912569aa-0c31-47ed-b6b5-f7a392b24de9

Oshi no Ko has brought the debut season of the anime to an end, and Japan's most famous cosplayer is celebrating the anime's run by bringing Ai Hoshino back to the center of the stage! Oshi no Ko immediately took over the world with the Spring 2023 anime schedule as the anime for Kaguya-sama: Love is War creator Aka Akasaka and Scum's Wish creator Mengo Yokoyari made a huge impact with fans all over the world. Much of this came due to the strength of the first impression of its first lead character, the idol Ai.

Ai was introduced as the first main character of the series, but it was revealed that by the end of Oshi no Ko's cinematic 90 minute first episode that she was not going to be the character we followed through the rest of the run. She's left a major impact on fans, however, and that's especially true with some cosplay from the artist with one of the hugest followings in Japan, Enako, who shared her take on the now famous pop idol with fans on Instagram. Check it out below:

How to Watch Oshi no Ko's Anime

The Oshi no Ko anime has officially ended its first season with 11 episodes airing this Spring, but thankfully a second season of the anime has already been announced to now be in the works. A release window or date has yet to be set for Oshi no Ko Season 2 as of this writing, but that means you can catch up with everything that happened in the anime so far as the anime is now streaming exclusively on HIDIVE. As for what to expect from the anime's story, HIDIVE teases Oshi no Ko as such:

"When a pregnant young starlet appears in Dr. Gorou Amemiya's countryside medical clinic, he takes it upon himself to safely (and secretly) deliver Ai Hoshino's child. But on the eve of her delivery, he is slain by Ai's deluded stalker -- and subsequently reborn as Ai's child, Aquamarine Hoshino! The dark underbelly of the entertainment industry threatens to dull the shine of his favorite star. Can he help his new mother rise to the top? And what will he do when disaster strikes? Based on the seinen drama manga series by Aka Akasaka and serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Young Jump."

Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Highlights the Gojo's Past Trio With New Art https://comicbook.com/anime/news/jujutsu-kaisen-season-2-gojo-geto-shoko-anime-art/ Wed, 28 Jun 2023 23:34:00 +0000 Nick Valdez a9b887a6-b307-4a42-bfc8-7deffb466284

Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 is one of the headlining releases of the new wave of anime coming during the Summer 2023 anime schedule, and some new art for the upcoming season is highlighting the main trio of the Gojo's Past Arc! Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 will be taking on the Hidden Inventory and Premature Death Arcs of Gege Akutami's original Jujutsu Kaisen manga, and these together form the "Gojo's Past" saga that showcases Satoru Gojo's life when he was in Jujutsu Tech. Together with Suguru Geto and Shoko Ieiri, Gojo takes on a tough mission that changes the course of each of their lives.

Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 will highlight the three fighters we've seen in action in the series before, but this look into their past will also showcase how they were very much like the trio of Yuji Itadori, Megumi Fushiguro, and Nobara Kugisaki that we see in the anime's first season. Gracing the cover art for the new opening and ending themes for Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2, the Gojo's Past trio is front and center as they gear up for their big showcase in the coming episodes. Check it out below:

How to Watch Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2

Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 premieres on July 6th in Japan as part of the upcoming new wave of anime hitting for the Summer 2023 anime schedule. Tackling both the Gojo's Past and Shibuya's Incident Arcs from Gege Akutami's original manga series, this new season will be running for two batches of episodes overall. Fans will be able to check out the newest episodes of Jujutsu Kaisen as they air overseas with Crunchyroll this July, and you can currently find the first season and Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie now streaming with the service as well if you wanted to catch up.

If you are jumping into Jujutsu Kaisen for the first time, Crunchyroll teases it as such, "Yuji Itadori is a boy with tremendous physical strength, though he lives a completely ordinary high school life. One day, to save a classmate who has been attacked by curses, he eats the finger of Ryomen Sukuna, taking the curse into his own soul. From then on, he shares one body with Ryomen Sukuna. Guided by the most powerful of sorcerers, Satoru Gojo, Itadori is admitted to Tokyo Jujutsu High School, an organization that fights the curses... and thus begins the heroic tale of a boy who became a curse to exorcise a curse, a life from which he could never turn back."

One-Punch Man Kicks Off Saitama vs. Genos Rematch https://comicbook.com/anime/news/one-punch-man-manga-saitama-vs-genos-rematch/ Wed, 28 Jun 2023 23:01:00 +0000 Nick Valdez 64938438-1a00-497e-8b88-17795fd65d28

One-Punch Man has been working its way through the first steps of a major new arc as a new hero association is being formed on the sidelines, and the newest chapter of the series has taken things to an interesting new level with the tease of a full rematch between Saitama and Genos! Following the massive changes to the status quo during the events of the fight against the Monster Association, the Hero Association has been trying to build its roster back up. But as we have seen through the chapters so far, there's been a bit of a trouble in this regard.

One-Punch Man previously teased that this new group of heroes had been approaching higher members of the Hero Association to join the group, and one of them happened to be Genos. The young hero has been in the midst of a crisis as he still feels like he's not getting stronger despite his learning from Saitama through the series' events so far, and this new group has had him thinking about possibly joining. This leads to his wanting a rematch from Saitama, but ends quickly due to Genos' sense of self-dissatisfaction.

(Photo: Shueisha)

Who Wins Saitama vs. Genos Rematch?

One-Punch Man Chapter 184 picks up shortly after it was revealed that Genos' new upgrades have made him stronger than ever before, and thus Genos wanted to challenge Saitama to a new sparring match to test that power. It's then revealed that Genos' new upgrades have made him physically brighter than before, and Saitama reacts by closing his eyes. Genos sees this, and refuses to connect his punch despite being the one to want the rematch. Saitama, not knowing how to respond, only makes Genos more self-conscious about his apparent lack of strength.

This crisis of faith makes Genos then reveal this new group is called "Neo Heroes," who have been building strength in the shadows with a roster of heroes that have not made themselves known just yet. They've been approaching high ranking heroes in the Hero Association, but Genos is still concerned that he has not grown strong enough yet to take on the cyborg that set him out on his revenge path years ago,

This Saitama and Genos rematch ultimately didn't happen, but teases that Genos' feelings of weakness will be leading to something much deeper later on. But how are you feeling about Genos' current crisis thus far? Let us know all of your thoughts about it in the comments! Bungo Stray Dogs Season 5 Episode Count Revealed https://comicbook.com/anime/news/bungo-stray-dogs-season-5-how-many-episodes/ Wed, 28 Jun 2023 22:27:00 +0000 Nick Valdez 25dc95c5-4a48-4eb7-8a8f-dc9fe8c8b996

Bungo Stray Dogs is one of the many anime franchises coming back with a new season as part of the upcoming wave of new anime releases for the Summer 2023 anime schedule, and Bungo Stray Dogs has revealed how many episodes Season 5 will be sticking around for its run! The Summer 2023 anime schedule is kicking in just a matter of days, and that means we'll be getting all sorts of new anime. Bungo Stray Dogs wrapped up Season 4 of the anime series earlier this Winter, and now its next slate of episodes is already on the way.

Bungo Stray Dogs Season 5 is gearing up for its premiere on July 12th, and the anime is celebrating by revealing that it will be running for 11 Episodes in total. According to a listing for its Disney+ release in Japan (as spotted by @AIR_News01 on Twitter), Bungo Stray Dogs Season 5 will have two less episodes than the Season 4 run from earlier this year, but it makes a lot of sense considering that it's essentially two batches of episodes hitting in the same year as opposed to the wait in between Seasons 3 and 4.

How to Watch Bungo Stray Dogs Season 5

Bungo Stray Dogs Season 5 will be premiering in Japan on July 12th, and Crunchyroll has confirmed that they will be streaming the new episodes alongside their debuts this Summer. Featuring a returning staff and cast from the previous seasons of the anime, Takuya Igarashi will be directing Bungo Stray Dogs Season 5 for Studio Bones. The new opening theme for the season is titled "Kurogane no Ori" as performed by GRANRODEO, and a new ending theme titled "Kiseki" as performed by Luck Life.

As for what to expect from the next season of the series, Crunchyroll teases Bungo Stray Dogs Season 5 as such, "Detective employees are caught one after another, and Kamui, the leader of Tenjin Goshui, is closing in on the Armed Detective Agency. Will the Agency survive?!" You can currently find the first four seasons of Bungo Stray Dogs and the Dead Apple feature film now streaming with Crunchyroll as well if you wanted to catch up before the new episodes hit this Summer.

El Tigre Is Coming to Paramount+ Soon https://comicbook.com/anime/news/el-tigre-manny-rivera-streaming-paramount-plus/ Wed, 28 Jun 2023 21:57:00 +0000 Nick Valdez 8e023785-36bb-4722-9dc4-f2547b6193c0

El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera is finally coming to streaming as Paramount+ has announced it will be coming to their streaming service next month! Originally created by Jorge R. Gutierrez and Sandra Equihua, El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera was one of the most notable Nickelodeon animated releases of the 2000s as a young boy with superpowers was torn between following in the heroic steps of his superhero father, or the more villainous steps of his supervillain grandfather. But while it was a very distinct cartoon with Nickelodeon, it's been pretty tough to revisit for those fans wanting to check it out once more.

Thankfully the trouble to check out El Tigre's episodes will soon be over as El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera will be streaming with Paramount+ beginning on July 26th. It's listed as a "Season 1" release so right now it's hard to tell how many episodes of its original 26 episode run (with a total of 50 stories in total as many of the episodes were split into two distinct segments) will be available, but any streaming release will be great considering it's been unavailable to watch for a while!

(Photo: Nickelodeon)

What Is El Tigre?

El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera was created by Jorge R. Gutierrez and Sandra Equiha for Nickelodeon back in 2007. Set in the Mexican culture inspired Miracle City, the titular El Tigre is the name of the young hero Manny Rivera who fights crime in his town. His father, the famous superhero White Pantera, and his grandfather, the famous villain Puma Loco, are both trying to influence the young Manny to use his powers for either good or evil. Together with his best friend Frida Suarez, Manny then takes on all sorts of powerful foes as he battles with his own ideals.

El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera was not only a step forward in representation on Nickelodeon as a whole, but was also forward thinking in the way that fans even voted on the end of a particular episode. There was a two part special event that saw fans voting for whether they wanted Manny to go the heroic or villain route, with fans ultimately voting for Manny to be good.

Now fans will be able to check out El Tigre and all it has to offer with Paramount+ this July! Are you going to watch El Tigre as soon as it's available for streaming? Chainsaw Man: Denji Struggles With New Status Quo https://comicbook.com/anime/news/chainsaw-man-manga-134-denji-new-status-quo/ Wed, 28 Jun 2023 21:46:00 +0000 Evan Valentine 3f49914e-1fa4-45ac-9826-56506a42c6c0

Chainsaw Man's recent chapters have flipped the script from Denji in the driver's seat to the new protagonist Asa Mikata. While Asa is a high school student much like the former protagonist, her abilities as a devil are far different from the Chainsaw Devil's. Thanks to recent events, Denji is now struggling with the possibility of never becoming the Chainsaw Man ever again and is having a rough time as new revelations are hitting the ground floor running in the manga series.

Warning. If you haven't read the latest chapter of Chainsaw Man, Chapter 134, be forewarned that we'll be diving into spoiler territory. In the previous chapter of the bloody shonen hero, Denji was told that the government wasn't too thrilled with his activities as the Chainsaw Devil. Not only has his battles against Devils caused some serious property damage, but a new religion had been started in his honor known as the "Chainsaw Man Church". Attracting a young generation, the church was seen as a threat to the government, who employed the young devil hunter Yoshida to lay down the law. Telling Denji that if he transforms into Chainsaw Man again, Nayuta will perish, Denji seems to have taken this to heart and is planning on not using his power.

chainsaw-man-status-quo.png
(Photo: Shueisha)

While watching television, Denji is shocked to discover that the church has its own Chainsaw Man, a mysterious character who is seemingly the doppelganger who saved Denji and Asa from the Falling Devil's machinations. With the fake Chainsaw Man stating that he is working to create a "devil-less world", the former star of the series can't help but freak out as a result.

"I've never thought that stuff! I don't fight for any reason! I died a gazillion times, and next thing I knew...next thing I knew, people were callin' me Chainsaw Man on their own! Your guy isn't Chainsaw Man! I'm more Chainsaw Man than him!"

While Denji has grown a little since the very beginning of the series, it's clear that even having lost allies and taken on challenges, he still has some serious growing up to do. Luckily for Chainsaw Man, Nayuta apparently has a much calmer composure in the face of this new trial.

Do you think Denji's days as Chainsaw Man are done? Feel free to let us know in the comments or hit me up directly on Twitter @EVComedy to talk all things comics, anime, and the world of the Chainsaw Devil.

My Adventures With Superman Creators Talk Dragon Ball Z Similarities https://comicbook.com/anime/news/my-adventures-with-superman-creators-dragon-ball-z-comparison/ Wed, 28 Jun 2023 20:25:00 +0000 Evan Valentine 7823ad42-ccd9-460f-bc5c-68dc634a6469

My Adventures With Superman will be the next animated adventure for the Man of Steel and his fellow Metropolis denizens. Planning to air on Adult Swim on July 7th, the new series has garnered attention from anime fans thanks in part to its anime-inspired opening. In a new interview, one of the producers responsible for the upcoming series focusing on Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Jimmy Olsen has compared the animated show to the adventures of the Z-Fighters from Dragon Ball Z.

Producer Jake Wyatt broke down how the creators of the Adult Swim series are fans of Toonami, "All of us here, and then almost our entire crew, except for a few of the younger people, are Toonami generation, right? So anime was new and exciting and fresh when we were in middle and high school. And it was available on American television for the first time ever. You didn't have to buy a VHS from a scary guy at an Otaku convention, which some of us have done from time to time."

imageedit-2-5795910153.jpg
(Photo: Warner Bros & Toei Animation)

Dragon Ball Super-Man

Wyatt even confirmed that Producer Josie Campbell brought in creators on the series to watch the Dragon Ball series, "Those were the action cartoons that we were into, and those were some of the interpretations of superheroes we were into. And then the younger artists are all the pirate generation. They are the lawless, who got everything off of, I don't even know what dark applications they used. So the anime stuff is there visually. And then in the writer's room, Josie had everybody over to watch Dragon Ball."

Josie Campbell then remarked on Clark Kent's start in the series as having less power, but eventually discovering his true abilities as Krypton's Last Son in a similar vein as Son Goku's journey in the shonen series, "Some part of me is delighted because we're Dragon Ball fans, so we're like, 'Yeah, give us a new power. Give us a new color, man."

My Adventures With Superman will see actor Jack Quaid taking on the Man of Steel with actors Alice Lee playing Lois Lane and Ishmel Sahid taking on the role of Jimmy Olsen. While the series will premiere on Adult Swim, each episode of the series will be released on MAX the following day. With the eternal debate of "Goku Vs. Superman" remaining a part of pop culture, perhaps this series will give us a better idea of Clark's chances.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Cosplay Displays a Devilishly Perfect Dio https://comicbook.com/anime/news/jojos-bizarre-adventure-cosplay-perfect-dio-brando/ Wed, 28 Jun 2023 19:07:00 +0000 Evan Valentine baa06c9e-ec22-42a9-b33e-0fff0b4d6cea

While JoJo's Bizarre Adventure has introduced plenty of new villains with each new story arc of the anime franchise, you'd be hard-pressed to argue that Dio Brando isn't the biggest antagonist to spawn from the mind of Hirohiko Araki. First appearing in the initial arc, Phantom Blood, the vampire would return to threaten the world in the third arc, Stardust Crusaders. Now, one cosplayer has brought the undead villain to life, capturing the creepy aesthetic of the flashy wielder of the Stand known as "The World".

Following his demise in Stardust Crusaders at the hands of Jotaro Kujo and his Stand, Star Platinum, Dio Brando hasn't come back from the grave to threaten any future generations of Joestar. Unfortunately for the bloodline, Brando's legacy has still managed to find its way to plague them in unsuspecting ways. In the latest anime season, Stone Ocean, Jotaro's daughter had to deal with the villain known as Pucci, an antagonist who formed a friendship with Dio prior to his demise and was working to make their shared dream into a reality. Luckily, Jolyne Cujoh was able to claim victory, but reality in the anime universe was changed forever as a result.

Dio Brando Resurrected

Dio looked a lot different in Stardust Crusaders versus Phantom Blood not just thanks to his attire change. In the final episode of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure's first arc, Dio was able to lay claim to Jonathan Joestar's body by placing his own head on his form. Thanks to how his body was destroyed in Stardust Crusaders, it seems unlikely that he'll be making a comeback in a similar fashion.

Following the reality shift at the end of Stone Ocean, the next season of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure's anime would be far different from what came before if it dives into Steel Ball Run. With the arrival of this new universe, a new Brando is introduced in Diego Brando, who isn't like his predecessor. David Productions has yet to confirm whether the anime will return in the future, though based on the popularity of the franchise, it might just be a matter of time.
