Jackson Says Marvel Wasn't Afraid to Explore Topic of Racism https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/secret-invasion-samuel-l-jackson-marvel-wasnt-afraid-explore-racism/ Sat, 01 Jul 2023 02:17:00 +0000 Nathaniel Brail cf2c1553-845b-4d44-90ac-e8fb705f46e3

Marvel Studios is hard at work developing their Phase 5 lineup of projects that will be building towards the epic conclusion of The Multiverse Saga in Phase 6, and fans are really excited for what's next. The most recent Marvel Studios project to be released is the Samuel L. Jackson-led Secret Invasion, and it has already aired two very surprising episodes, with one concluding in a major Marvel Cinematic Universe death. Initial reactions for Secret Invasion have been mixed, and it's looking like the series will be more of a slow burn. One of the highlights of the series has to be Jackson's triumphant return as Nick Fury, and he's even better than before. Jackson is currently doing press for the series, where he's revealing that Marvel Studios wasn't afraid to do one very specific thing with the series. In a new interview with Variety, Jackson says that Marvel wasn't afraid to let Secret Invasion explore the topic of racism.

"[What it's like for Fury to have] that much power as a Black man, and how they can be diminished at any moment by someone else just saying a specific thing or changing the trajectory of one's career path because of it," Jackson told the trade in a new interview. "Rhodey and Fury have risen to this place where we have a certain amount of power, even though we're better than the people who have power, we still got to suppress ourselves in a specific way. And Marvel's not afraid to let us explore that."

Jackson went on to reveal that Secret Invasion used things that were real to him to develop Nick Fury's backstory, "I used to take the train every summer from Chattanooga, Tennessee to Washington, D.C. I couldn't go in a dining car because it's segregated. When they put me on the train, they gave me a shoebox with food in it, then I ate that food. We used things that were real for me as a person to give Nick Fury the kind of history that he has, to inform the story in a real way about, you know, how he wasn't always this [powerful], or he does look at America in another kind of way."

"It wasn't on the page. It was him telling us a story. He's very connected to Nick Fury in a way that no writer ever could be." Secret Invasion director Ali Selim added about Jackson/Fury's story.

What is Secret Invasion about?

Secret Invasion centers around MCU veterans Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Talos (Mendelsohn) as they deal with an invasion of shape-shifting Skrulls who have infiltrated all aspects of life on Earth. Other MCU veterans will include Smulders as Maria Hill, Don Cheadle as James "Rhodey" Rhodes / War Machine, and Martin Freeman as Everett K. Ross. New cast members will include Emilia Clarke, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Olivia Colman, Carmen Ejogo, Christopher McDonald, Dermot Mulroney, and Killian Scott. The series will be written and executive produced by Kyle Bradstreet, and directed by Thomas Bezucha and Ali Selim.

The first two episodes of Secret Invasion are currently streaming on Disney+.

Captain America's Anthony Mackie on Possible Actors Strike Effecting Avengers: The Kang Dynasty https://comicbook.com/movies/news/captain-america-anthony-mackie-actors-effecting-strike-avengers/ Sat, 01 Jul 2023 01:03:00 +0000 Nathaniel Brail 4fe9b188-f719-430e-8f30-d6d4a4998303

Everything in the film and television industry seems to be in a state of stasis, with the Writers Guild of America currently on strike and the Screen Actors Guild currently trying to negotiate a better contract to avoid going on strike. The SAG-AFTRA strike could be avoided, but it is becoming more and more likely that we could see both the WGA and SAG on strike at the same time. Marvel Studios has already been forced to halt production on a bunch of projects and cancel their appearance at San Diego Comic-Con's Hall H due to the ongoing WGA strike and possible SAG-AFTRA strike, and now it seems that one of their stars is now speaking out on what could happen with the next Avengers movie if the actors do indeed go on strike. While speaking with Inverse to promote his new series Twisted Metal, Anthony Mackie (Captain America: Brave New World) spoke about what could happen to Avengers: The Kang Dynasty if an agreement isn't reached between the studios and the actors.

"It's a sh*t show if we go on strike," Mackie continues by revealing that the only way forward is for the studios to come correct with a new deal. "They're going to have to. Unless they get a bunch of f*cking YouTubers to make Avengers 5!"

"Once the studios went public and were bought out by major companies, we were f*cked. It's no longer about art. It's no longer about interesting, fun work. It's about end-of-the-quarter profit sharing. It's about shareholders. So you're literally just raping and pillaging the industry. It's cannibalism." The Captain America: Brave New World star added.

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty Writer is Excited to Work With Actors on Film

Although it's been rumored that writer Jeff Loveness has exited his duties penning the script for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, he recently made an appearance on ComicBook.com's Phase Zero podcast and revealed to our very own Brandon Davis exactly which actors he's excited to work with on the film.

"I can't say specifically. I think I'd get in trouble. I gotta get better at talking to the internet. But, like, just characters that we like? I mean, I think we're excited for the actors more than even the characters right now because we've got a really good crop of performers. We've got Florence Pugh and Jonathan Majors and Letitia Wright. We've got such a deep bench of really good actors and I think everyone is going to get their chance to shine. I cant say who, but I think we've got a deep bench and it's fun to finally put everybody into the game."

Captain America: Brave New World is expected to arrive in theaters on August 26, 2024 and Avengers: The Kang Dynasty will hit theaters on May 1, 2026!

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Originally Had a Wario-Style Name for Evil Miles https://comicbook.com/movies/news/spider-man-across-the-spider-verse-originally-wario-evil-miles/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 22:05:00 +0000 Nathaniel Brail 57f0ebe6-c027-405e-a56e-ef5a66e30a0d

Sony Pictures Animation has finally released the sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in theaters, and it's another massive hit. All of the reactions to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse have been mostly positive, and it has been having its way at the box office, doing more than the first film in its opening weekend. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse brings audiences back into the world of Miles Morales/Spider-Man, and it seems that the events of the first film have caused a set of chain reactions that lead into the sequel. One of the major things that happens in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse happens to be a major cliffhanger that shows our Miles getting trapped in another universe that just happens to house a variant that is actually the Prowler. It turns out that this version of the character was originally going to be called Wiles, which is a fun play on the Mario and Wario names from the Super Mario Bros. video game universe. Well, at least according to a new tweet from director Kemp Powers, which you can check out below.

"A 2020 movement test of Miles G. (boards by the amazing @wyntonred and @SpencerWan and anim by @NickTyson) explores how he would've been trained by his Uncle Aaron (the original Prowler) before the events of the film," Powers wrote on Twitter. "We called the character "Wiles" back then."

What happens in Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse?

Sony Pictures Animation is teasing big things for our beloved Spider-People in the sequel. Here's a brief synopsis for Across the Spider-Verse: Miles Morales returns to the big screen with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse now playing in theaters after premiering on June 2nd. Miles (Shamiek Moore) reunites with fellow heroes Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld) and Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson) for another web-swinging adventure through the multiverse, finding himself at odds with the Spider-Society led by Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac). Other new heroes include Spider-Woman Jessica Drew (Issa Rae), Spider-Punk (Daniel Kaluuya), and Pavitr Prabhakar (Karan Soni), while new villain the Spot (Jason Schwartzman) also enters the fray. The sequel to Sony Pictures' hit 2018 film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson, and written by the team of Chris Miller, Phil Lord, and Dave Callaham.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is exclusively in theaters now!

Yelena Belova's White Widow Stars in a New Marvel Series https://comicbook.com/comics/news/yelena-belovas-white-widow-marvel-comics-series/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 19:49:00 +0000 Timothy Adams b7f2e922-173e-41bf-ad7b-946521c25e40

Marvel fans that fell in love with Florence Pugh's portrayal of Yelena Belova will be happy to hear that the hero will headline her own Marvel solo series. Pugh debuted as Yelena Belova in 2021's Black Widow movie, playing the sister of Scarlett Johansson's titular Avenger. She later returned to reprise the role in the Hawkeye Disney+ series and is also set to join Marvel's Thunderbolts movie. While Marvel has pushed back the release date of Thunderbolts, a new White Widow miniseries from Marvel Comics is on the horizon to whet the appetite.

White Widow #1 comes from writer Sarah Gailey (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Eat the Rich) and artist Alessandro Miracolo (Obi-Wan, Yoda) and promises "a groundbreaking new chapter in the life of one of Marvel's most enigmatic antiheroes." White Widow will set Yelena Belova off on her own path that's not tied to her more popular sister, Black Widow.

"I am beyond exhilarated to launch White Widow into her own series!" Gailey told The Mary Sue. "Yelena Belova is an incredible character who deserves independence, community, and the opportunity to kill on her own terms. Getting the chance to work with this team at Marvel is a thrill. I can't wait for the world to see what Alessandro and I have in store!"

Thunderbolts Director and Cast Tease Marvel Film

Fans finally learned who will be a part of the Thunderbolts team at D23 Expo in September. The ultimate fan convention for all things Disney was full of surprises, including trailers for Secret Invasion and Werewolf By Night. On the movie side, the biggest reveal came in the form of Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige announcing the cast of Thunderbolts, a new superhero team being introduced in Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Thunderbolts was officially announced at San Diego Comic-Con, though the roster was held until D23 Expo. With the cast and director Jake Schreier on hand, they discussed what fans can look forward to when the Marvel film premieres on Dec. 20, 2024.

"I obviously feel incredibly lucky to even have a cast like this, and to get characters that have such richness and depth and to see what happens when they square off," Thunderbolts director Jake Schreier said backstage at D23 Expo." Stranger Things actor David Harbour, who plays the Russian super-soldier Red Guardian, added, "They might lose," to which Schreier replied, "Yeah, success is not guaranteed."

"It's actually going to be really nice to play the kind of painless strengths of Ghost and see where that takes her." Harbour added that he will get a new suit in Thunderbolts, at least that's what he was told, which will hopefully fit him a lot better than the costume he wore in Black Widow.

"You watch that Captain America and you see him in all these different movies, with the white star, the black star... I just want a full closet of suits, so I'm well on my way."

White Widow #1 goes on sale November 1st.

Marvel's Spider-Man Games on Special Sale Ahead of Sequel's Release https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/marvels-spider-man-miles-morales-games-sale/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 18:24:00 +0000 Tyler Fischer 99ca2c65-a1e4-4149-b31d-b352a6a9cbcf

Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered and Marvel's Spider-Man Miles Morales have both been included in the massive Steam Summer Sale by developer Insomniac Games and publisher PlayStation. And as a result of the sale, each game is as cheap as they have ever been on digital PC storefront. The discounts aren't as big as many other discounts featured in the sale, but the pair of games are rarely discounted on Steam in the first place.

Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered is a 2020 PS5 remaster of 2018 PS4 game Marvel's Spider-Man that came to PC in 2022. Also in 2022, Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, a follow-up spin-off of 2018's Marvel's Spider-Man that was originally released in 2020, came to PC. Now, both of these PC versions of each game are on sale as part of the Steam Summer Sale, which includes a highly rated game for just $0.44.

Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered: "This isn't the Spider-Man you've met or ever seen before. This is an experienced Peter Parker who's more masterful at fighting big crime in New York City. At the same time, he's struggling to balance his chaotic personal life and career while the fate of Marvel's New York rest upon his shoulders."

Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales: "Following the events of Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered, teenager Miles Morales is adjusting to his new home while following in the footsteps of his mentor, Peter Parker, as a new Spider-Man. But when a fierce power struggle threatens to destroy his new home, the aspiring hero realizes that with great power, there must also come great responsibility. To save all of Marvel's New York, Miles must take up the mantle of Spider-Man and own it."

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is set to release worldwide on October 20, 2023 via PS5. Of course, you don't need to play either of these games in order to enjoy it, but they are all connected. Further, they are both great games, so they are worth checking out if you haven't already.

Deadpool 3 Apparently Nearly Completed With Filming https://comicbook.com/movies/news/deadpool-3-reportedly-nearly-completed-with-filming/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 18:04:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame a81ba2b3-7b7b-4229-9901-fdd2f2bec4b2

The Writers Guild of America is already on strike, and if a deal isn't struck by midnight PT tonight, the Screen Actors Guild will join them, grinding most of Hollywood to a halt. That makes it a sprint to the finish line for Deadpool 3, which apparently is [thisclose] to completing principal photography. Since the writers strike started, a number of productions have been halted, while others have tried to sneak in under the wire. Deadpool 3 was one of the latter, in spite of WGA member Ryan Reynolds serving as the film's lead, and now it looks like the plan is either to wrap production, or at least get as close as possible, in the hopes of maintaining the movie's planned May 2024 release date, according to Deadline.

With the multiverse taking point on so many big blockbusters, Deadpool 3 seems to be parodying the phenomenon, with unconfirmed rumors that various former X-Men actors will appear in the film, along with Fox's Deadpool star Ben Affleck. The movie is closer to completion than other big tentpole blockbusters, leading Disney and Marvel to give it Captain America: Brave New World's release date, moving it up by a few months.

Other movies that are either done, or so close to done that they hope to beat out a potential strike, include Sony's Bad Boys 4, which recently wrapped in Atlanta and is currently shooting pickups in Miami; Warner Bros' Beetlejuice 2, which is wrapping soon, and the recently-wrapped sequel to Sony's Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Focus Features' Amy Winehouse biopic Back to Black has also wrapped principal photography already.

Deadpool 3 will be written by Bob's Burgers' Wendy Molyneaux and Lizzie Molyneaux-Loeglin, with Deadpool and Deadpool 2 writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick reportedly also returning to contribute to the script. Emma Corin (Pennyworth) will star, alongside Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. The film will be the first in the franchise to be released by Marvel Studios, following the acquisition of 20th Century Fox by Disney.

"It will be rated R and we are working on a script right now, and Ryan's overseeing a script right now," Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige shared in a 2021 interview, in which he said Deadpool was "a very different type of character in the MCU, and Ryan is a force of nature, which is just awesome to see him bring that character to life."

Barring any complications, Deadpool 3 is set for release on May 3, 2024.

New Jonathan Majors Report Details Alleged "Extreme Abuse" Within Previous Relationships https://comicbook.com/movies/news/new-jonathan-majors-report-alleged-extreme-abuse-previous-relationships/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 03:59:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson be6a2810-b017-4b23-abd9-1984148e1c3d

A new report details even more allegations of abuse and misconduct from actor Jonathan Majors, both in personal relationships and on the sets of recent movies. On Thursday night, Rolling Stone published an extensive deep-dive into a near-decade of alleged incidents, including and in addition to Majors being arrested on domestic violence charges earlier this year. The report spoke to more than 40 sources who have known Majors in graduate school at Yale University, in his romantic relationships, and on the sets of his movies. As one source says in the report, "No one is surprised that this is coming out. It always felt like it was a matter of time because his behavior never changed. He's kind of a bad dude, and now it's just catching up with him."

The report alleges, according to over a dozen different sources, that Majors abused two previous romantic partners physically and/or emotionally. Allegedly, one woman endured "really extreme abuse, physically and mentally" while dating Majors, culminating to the point of "him strangling her." There are also allegations of emotional abuse towards a second woman Majors dated, with claims that he was "controlling" over everything from what she ate to who she could interact with. Sources claim that the woman called her and Majors' relationship "emotional torture", and that he would get angry to the point of "needed to hit something or punch a wall or something of that nature."

"She said on a few occasions that he wanted her to believe that he was the oxygen in the room [and] that she could not live without him," a source says of that relationship.

The report also dives into Majors' alleged professional behavior, both acting at Yale's School of Drama and working in recent film projects like Devotion and the upcoming Magazine Dreams. According to the report, Majors allegedly had multiple confrontations and altercations with his Yale classmates while acting, including slapping a classmate while they were play wrestling during rehearsal. Classmates reportedly took their concerns to Yale administration, and even some instructors reportedly saw the incidents firsthand.

A source who worked on the set of 2022's Devotion claims that Majors allegedly made members of the costume department cry on set, saying "It started to become borderline abusive. It seemed like it was some kind of sick pleasure that he took out of -- once those girls cried.... He did it to people who he could tell would be too afraid to stand up for themselves." On the set of Magazine Dreams, which is currently scheduled to be released in December, Majors allegedly physically reacted to two crew members on set, pushing one and "moving in an intimidating manner toward the other while yelling" to the other. Complaints were reportedly filed, but a production source claims that the incident did not involve physical contact or intimidation, and that Majors "was immediately made aware of the complaint and he was mortified that he had made someone feel bad."

These updates come after the domestic violence charges have led to Majors reportedly parting ways with his management Entertainment 360 and PR firm Lede Company, with Entertainment 360 citing "issues of the actor's personal behavior." Majors was also dropped from two upcoming films -- The Man in My Basement and a currently-untitled Otis Redding biopic -- as well as an upcoming ad campaign involving the MLB's Texas Rangers. He was already previously dropped from a recent United States Army ad campaign. At the time of this writing, Majors is still attached to reprise his role of Kang the Conqueror in future installments of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, beginning with the upcoming sophomore season of Loki, which was filmed prior to the domestic violence charge.

Marvel's Rogers: The Musical Review at Disneyland Resort https://comicbook.com/irl/news/rogers-the-musical-review-marvel-captain-america-musical-disneyland-resort/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 03:10:00 +0000 Cameron Bonomolo 22b41b78-3461-4324-aae8-82d41ecff87e

"I could watch this all day," remarked an audience member after curtains fell on Disneyland's premiere of Rogers: The Musical. Based on the Marvel Cinematic Universe version of Captain America, the meta musical comedy stages the fictitious Broadway musical from Marvel Studios' Hawkeye TV series as a one-act live theater production. Billed as "a timeless story about a timeless hero," the real-life Rogers: The Musical chronicles the story of Steve Rogers, the first Avenger. (Here's everything you need to know about Rogers: The Musical, opening June 30th and performing through August 31st at the Hyperion Theater at Disney California Adventure Park.)

Rogers: The Musical is inspired by the fictional production (and social media sensation) showcased in episodes of Marvel's Hawkeye, where Avengers archer Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) attended a musical retelling of the life of Steve Rogers (Chris Evans). In-universe, the stage show took dramatic license with its interpretation of the Battle of New York -- the incident that assembled the Avengers against an alien army of Chitauri in 2012 -- in the show-stopping musical number "Save the City," with deliberately campy lyrics ("Avengers unite, 'cause we've got to hear you say, 'I could do this all day!'") written by Grammy and Tony Award-winning Broadway veterans Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray).

'Rogers: The Musical' Live Theater Show at Disneyland Resort - 'Star Spangled Man'
(Photo: Disneyland Resort/ Sean Teegarden)

The story of Steve Rogers is "about superheroes, romance, and time travel," sings a trio of sparkling Starkettes in the "U-S-Opening Night" opening number, framing the narrative like the self-aware Muses in Disney's Hercules. Spanning 80 years and multiple MCU movies but told "in 30 minutes or less," the show breezes through the events of Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), The Avengers (2012), and Avengers: Endgame (2019), but captures what Dan Fields, Executive Creative Director at Disney Live Entertainment, said is "the humor, heroism, and heart" of the once-fake musical that relives the life of Steve Rogers.

Born sickly Steve Rogers, the scrappy, bully-bashing runt is just a kid from Brooklyn who wants to do his duty and enlist in the U.S. Army during World War II. Weak in body but strong in heart, Steve is recruited by scientist Abraham Erskine and SSR Agent Peggy Carter into Project Rebirth, a top-secret government program to create "America's New Hope": a Super Soldier. After a dose of Vita-Rays and Super Soldier serum, Steve Rogers is reborn as Captain America, the Star Spangled Man with a plan who wages war against HYDRA in a pulpy, comic book-styled montage. Plunged into the freezing ice of the Arctic in a selfless act of heroism, Steve spends 70 years in suspended animation and awakes as a man out of time who never got that dance with Peggy. Recruited to the Avengers Initiative by Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D., Captain America and the Avengers assemble as Earth's mightiest heroes. As Steve sings: "I could do this all day!" But after fighting an endless war -- destruction in D.C. (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) and Sokovia (Avengers: Age of Ultron), battles in Wakanda (Avengers: Infinity War) and against Thanos (Avengers: Endgame) -- Steve asks his older, time traveler self: "Can we really do this all day?"

The stage show, created and directed by Jordan Peterson (Avengers Assemble Stunt Show), is like marathoning the Captain Americaand Avengers movies at double speed and fast-forwarding to the major plot points. (Marvel movie fans know the beats, and non-fans get the gist.) There's a clear through-line from The First Avenger to The Avengers to Avengers: Endgame that tracks Steve's emotional and heroic journey through the MCU, told musically with a soundtrack that is appropriately Disney Broadway. Rogers: The Musical may have started as a purposely cheesy Broadway spoof in Hawkeye, but the Disney Parks version is as hearty as it is wholesome, with songs worthy of a Broadway stage.

'Rogers: The Musical' Live Theater Show at Disneyland Resort - 'What you Missed'
(Photo: Disneyland Resort/ Sean Teegarden)

The Rogers: The Musical soundtrack features the familiar -- including Shaiman and Wittman's earworm "Save the City" as heard in Hawkeye, Alan Menken and David Zippel's "Star Spangled Man" USO show tune from The First Avenger, and Alan Silvestri's iconic Captain America and Avengers themes -- and five new original songs, including "I Want You" (Steve's very own "I Want" song about enlisting for Uncle Sam), "What You Missed" (a pop culture catch-up pop song performed by S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury, less stoic spymaster and more Aladdin's scene-stealing Genie), "End of the Line" (a reflective twist on Steve's endgame), and "Just One Dance" (a ballad about the "lost romance" between Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter).

From a book by Hunter Bell (Broadway's award-winning production titled "[title of show]," Disney Cruise Line's Villains Tonight!), with music by Christopher Lennertz (Marvel's Agent Carter) and lyrics by Lennertz, Peterson, and Alex Karukas, Rogers: The Musical is produced by Disney Live Entertainment, which presented the Broadway-lite stage adaptations Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular and Frozen - Live at the Hyperion for Disney California Adventure.

For the creative team behind the real-life Rogers, the musical was an opportunity to give parkgoers -- and musical theater fans and superhero fans alike -- "something they would love about the music," Lennertz said. "Both avid fans and guests that are new to the story of Captain America will relate to Steve's journey to answer, 'What do I aspire to? How do I get it? What choices do I have to make?'" said Jennifer Magill, producer at Disney Live Entertainment. "Guests of all ages will be won over by the humanity and good-natured positivity of Rogers: The Musical."

That includes Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige, who embraced the show-within-a-show turned real-life musical. Fields recalled Feige's reaction to one show-stopping musical number: "'Nick Fury sings? That should be on the billboard.'"

I could watch it all day.

Rogers: The Musical will be presented Tuesday through Saturday most weeks at the Hyperion Theater inside Disney California Adventure at the Disneyland Resort from June 30th to August 31st. See the official Disneyland website for park tickets and showtimes, and read our guide to Rogers: The Musical.

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse Producers Address Sequel's Release Date (Exclusive) https://comicbook.com/movies/news/spider-man-beyond-the-spider-verse-producers-release-date-exclusive/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 00:53:00 +0000 Nathaniel Brail 59573ab3-898b-40fa-8a3f-4443568e11b8

Sony Pictures Animation recently released the highly anticipated sequel to their award-winning animated movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and it has been well received so far. Initial reviews for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse were some of the most positive of the year, and the film has been killing it at the box office. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse ends on a massive cliffhanger, and fans are excited to see the conclusion next year. There have been some reports that Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse could be delayed, and the studio and producer Amy Pascal have already commented on it. Now, producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller have opened up about those reports and given an answer on whether Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will be delayed. In a new interview with ComicBook.com's Chris Killian in promotion for the new season of Apple TV+'s The After Party, Lord and Miller gave an answer to the question of whether Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will be delayed.

"I would say that just like we're going to take the time necessary to make Beyond the Spider-Verse great," Lord said before Miller concluded their answer. "And we won't back into a release date that doesn't fit."

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse May Get Delayed

According to a fairly recent report, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse could wind up getting delayed due to a very important reason. In the report, artist who is working on the film claims that there is now way that the sequel could hit theaters in 2024.

"They've announced that Beyond the Spider-Verse will be released in March of next year. I've seen people say, 'Oh, they probably worked on it at the same time.' There's no way that movie's coming out then. There's been progress on the pre-production side of things. But as far as the production side goes, the only progress that's been made on the third one is any exploration or tests that were done before the movie was split into two parts. Everyone's been fully focused on Across the Spider-Verse and barely crossing the finish line. And now it's like, Oh, yeah, now we have to do the other one."

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is in theaters now while Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is expected to hit theaters on March 29, 2024.

Marvel Confirms the MCU Super-Skrull Won't Use Fantastic Four Powers https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/marvel-confirms-mcu-super-skrull-fantastic-four-powers/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 00:14:00 +0000 Spencer Perry 48ba9135-1679-49c3-a6af-16d8c9b968cb

Marvel Comics feature a few different versions of the Super-Skrull, an enhanced version of the aliens found in Secret Invasion. The most notable version of Marvel's Super-Skrull is one who possesses the combined super powers of the entire Fantastic Four. Modern comics would bring us more versions of the Super-Skrull but for years when Marvel comics fans thought "Super-Skrull" only one version came to mind. The Marvel Cinematic Universe version of the Skrulls are the focal point of Disney+ series Secret Invasion, and now the series has confirmed a major way that the MCU Super-Skrull will be very different.

With no Fantastic Four in the Marvel Cinematic Universe yet, the Skrulls don't have that power set to draw from and to create their Super-Skrulls. Secret Invasion episode 2 however is quick to answer the question of which characters they are pulling from to make their own upgrades. In the episode it's revealed that Skrull leader Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir) has collected genetic material from a few different MCU characters including: Guardians of the Galaxy's Groot, Thanos' minion Cull Obsidian from Avengers: Infinity War, an Extremis Soldier from Iron Man 3, and a Frost Beast from the Thor movies.

These combines powers will however have very similar uses to what the Super-Skrull was capable of when it used the Fantastic Four's abilities. Groot's uncanny ability to stretch and contort his plant limbs is reminiscent of Mr. Fantastic's stretchiness (and can already be seen in the trailer), while the Cull Obsidian DNA seems to be similar to Ben Grimm/The Thing and the Extremis Soldier's abilities seem very similar to Johnny Storm/The Human Torch. Perhaps the Frost Beast's DNA is being used to give them an unbreakable hide, but any similarities to Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman seems absent.

It's not fully clear what use the Super-Skrull will be in the larger scheme of Marvel's Secret Invasion, but we can already glean from the show's marketing that Kingsley Ben-Adir's Gravik is going to at least get some of these powers. One shot from Secret Invasion seems to show the character fully utilizing Groot's powers. Time will tell how the other abilities make themselves known, and if the Skrulls have somehow gotten access to the powers of characters like Thor, Loki, or The Hulk.

The MCU's top superspy Nick Fury is back in Secret Invasion, the limited series premiered June 21st on Disney+ with new episodes every Wednesday. Samuel L. Jackson returns in the new Marvel Studios series, showcasing Fury's attempt to get to the bottom of a Skrull invasion that goes all the way to the most powerful positions in various governments and organizations on the planet. In Secret Invasion, Fury teams with allies Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders), Everett Ross (Martin Freeman), and Talos (Ben Mendelsohn), while James Rhodes AKA War Machine will appear in a mysterious capacity. Other newcomers to the Marvel Cinematic Universe include Emilia Clarke, Olivia Colman, and Kingsley Ben-Adir.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Director Reveals How Shocking Variant Evolved https://comicbook.com/movies/news/spider-man-spider-verse-2-miles-morales-prowler-director-reveals-variant/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 21:00:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 39e5994a-3ac6-40fc-9e9b-77199f94f923

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse's director just revealed some new details about the shocking twist near the end. Fans of the movie remember Miles Morales coming face-to-face with himself at the tail end of the Sony Animated movie. So, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse director Justin K. Thompson had to outline what changed for Miles G. Morales in the new art book for the film. (Go read Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse: The Art of the Movie, by Ramin Zahed. There are tons of other amazing nuggets in the pages for you to find.) It turns out, not getting bitten by that spider changed the life course of the Miles Morales from Earth 42. Darkly, you could probably consider that his "canon event."

"Miles comes face to face with this other version of himself and realizes that because one thing dropped the other way, everything changed due to the 'butterfly effect,' where one small change can result in later changes to a deterministic nonlinear system--in this case an entire reality," Thompson explained (h/t to @GL2814_3!). "Internally, we decided to call this parallel-world version 'Miles G. Morales' to avoid confusion."

Why Do People Love Miles Morales So Much?

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse proves how much people love Miles Morales. When it comes down to it, they just enjoy the character and his family. All the Spider-shenanigans are a bonus. When Comicbook.com's Aaron Perine spoke to the directors, they argued that getting the Morales dynamic right was more important than any Multiverse implications

"I mean, look, that's, we've all been on that journey too," co-director Justin K. Thompson told us. "I've been at the end of the line where I'm like, I don't know what the next step is for me. I will say animation saved my life. I was at a point in my life where I was like, I don't know what's going to happen next. I don't know. And it was animation that sort of came in and swept me off my feet and provided for me. So I think that relatability again is something we can impose on Miles and wonder what is he going to do? What's the thing that's going to save Miles?"

Co-director Joaquim Dos Santos added, "I think, I think as long as we focus on our characters, as long as we focus on why he's doing what he's doing and why it matters, I think that will always be our North Star no matter what. But I can tell you, I can promise you it's going to be amazing. It's going to be spectacular. It's going to be fantastic. It's going to be Spider Man."

Miles G. Morales Isn't The Only Special Prowler Here

aaron-davis-donald-glover-spider-man-mcu-1260616.jpg

So, Miles is The Prowler in Universe 42. But, there's another special version of the villain in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. It feels like everyone was talking about Donald Glover popping in as a live-action variant of The Prowler midway through the movie. The directors talked to Variety about how they managed to snag the cameo.

"It was shot at a studio in New York," Kemp Powers explained. "Chris Miller flew to be there in person, and Phil Lord and I were on the video feed giving direction. We got it in at the 11th hour. As a matter of fact, even in audience preview screenings, it was a little cardboard cutout of Donald Glover."

"We knew it was still going to land, though, because the idea of it still got people geeked," Dos Santos continued. "That's when you know you have something."

Do you think The Prowler will help Miles? Let us know in the comments!

Pokemon Go Creator Cancels New Marvel Game Amid Layoffs https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/pokemon-go-niantic-layoffs-marvel-world-of-heroes-canceled/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 17:35:00 +0000 Tanner Dedmon a0048c72-4e4a-4383-82ec-420abaa20766

Niantic, the creator of Pokemon Go, has canceled an in-development Marvel game called Marvel World of Heroes. First announced in September 2022, Marvel World of Heroes was meant to leverage Niantic's experience in the field of augmented reality games like Pokemon Go by allowing players to "interact" with Marvel heroes like Captain America, Spider-Man, and more via hero avatars that players created themselves. The decision to end development on this game was announced on Thursday alongside other organizational changes including the end of another game, NBA All-World, the closure of a studio, and over 200 layoffs.

John Hanke, the CEO of Niantic, penned an email to employees which was shared publicly on Thursday. Citing shifts in the mobile games market and a desire to narrow Niantic's focus to first-part games and games geared towards emerging mixed reality and augmented reality devices, Hanke told Niantic employees and now everyone else of the following changes.

"Specifically, this means we will be closing our LA studio, reducing our game platform team and making additional reductions across the company," Hanke said. "As a result, we will be sunsetting NBA All-World and stopping production on Marvel: World of Heroes. This means we are laying off around 230 Niantics."

Hanke laid out a couple of reasons why this is happening. Factors like mobile games being a "tough market" right now were put forth, and though revenue surged during Covid shutdowns and Niantic grew its workforce and ambitions accordingly, Hanke said, but when revenue returned to more normal levels, those projects Niantic took on didn't perform as well as expected. Hanke also said Niantic's mobile platform has not met its goals in terms of things like social engagement, monetization, and tools called for to reach those goals.

Moving forward, Hanke said the primary focus will remain on Pokemon Go. He said Niantic has "a lot of work to do" but added that he remained confident about other games like Pikmin Bloom, Peridot and Monster Hunter Now.

Marvel World of Heroes looked to lean into the multiverse trend upon release and was supposed to come out some time in 2023. It's been in beta in certain regions during a soft launch but was not widely available prior to its cancelation.

"Become a Marvel Super Hero in the real world," a preview of the now defunct Marvel game read. "Create your own hero, patrol your neighborhood to foil crimes, and team up with your friends as well as iconic Marvel heroes such as Spider-Man, Captain America, and Wolverine to save the Multiverse!"

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Now Sony Pictures Animation's Highest-Grossing Film https://comicbook.com/movies/news/spider-man-across-the-spider-verse-box-office-sony-pictures-animations-highest-grossing-film/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 16:33:00 +0000 Aaron Perine ad00aff5-c7d1-4835-8bc0-80be1fadbe01

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is now the highest-grossing movie in Sony Pictures Animation's history. The Miles Morales sequel stands at $566 million worldwide, that takes it above The Smurfs which notched $563 million. These kinds of box office results are rarified air for animated projects. (Especially ones that don't come from the Disney corporation.) However, a quick search of the Internet tells you all you need to know about how the little Spider-Man that could got here. Miles Morales's story is so accessible and relatable, that people went out of their way to see this one in theaters.

In an age where so many big budget projects inspire a "wait for it to get on streaming" feeling among audiences, the race to see Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has been breathtaking to see. While a lot of commenters bemoan "superhero fatigue," there's literally no way you can look at the outpouring of love toward Spider-Verse 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and not see these stories still connecting with people. Sony Pictures has to be thrilled with their project and the prospect of another Oscar in the future.

What's Going To Happen With Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse?

spider-man-beyond-spider-verse-release-date-delay-productions-troubles-phil-lord.jpg
(Photo: Sony Animation)

While everyone eagerly awaits Miles's eventual fate in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, there is some belief that the project will get delayed. The sequel is tabbed for March of 2024. In a recent Vulture article, some crew members talked about their experience making the film. It seems like with the amount of work being put into these movies, there's just no way that Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is going to make that slot.

"It's common for executives on a production to have a big say, but usually, they're not as heavily involved as Phil was. As producer, Phil overrides all the directors," one crew member explained. "They are obviously in charge of directing, but if Phil has a note that contradicts their note, his note takes precedence. They have to do what Phil says. So there were constant changes and cuts. With Phil Lord, nothing is ever final or approved. Nothing was really set in stone. Nothing was ever done. Everything was just endlessly moving beneath our feet because they wanted it to be the best that it could be."

What's On The Horizon For Miles Morales?

(Photo: Sony Pictures Animation)

A lot of people wonder how the team responsible for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is even going to top the sequel? Well according to co-director Joaquim Dos Santos, the sky is really the limit. Keep in mind, everything missing from the first two movies is up for grabs in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. So, he told Collider to get ready because anything can happen now!

"I mean, you saw it in the film, there was cool stuff to be seen. I think everything's on the table," Dos Santos explained. "I can't give you an answer. I wouldn't dare give you an answer for fear of being, like, sniped right here on the spot, but yeah, I mean, that's the exciting thing of these films. Look, I'm a man of a certain age, and in my mid-forties, the idea that I would be seeing a film like this, so beyond what I could imagine, even when I was a kid, it's the stuff that I would draw in school on my notebook paper, and now it's happening. So I think everything's up."

Spider-Verse Manga Makeover Gives Gwen the Shonen Treatment https://comicbook.com/anime/news/spider-man-spider-verse-2-gwen-stacy-anime-manga-shonen-artwork/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 16:00:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw 2da1779a-1658-4519-b510-1c2102acc112

The Spider-Man Spider-Verse animated film series has put a worldwide blockbuster spotlight on just how glorious the influence of manga/anime is on the larger world of animated storytelling. Now things are swinging back the other way, as a fan artist has taken Spider-Verse's Gwen Stacy and given her the Shonen manga treatment!

As you can see below, artist @A2TwillDraw took Gwen Stacy's likeness on a journey from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse through the styles of the biggest shonen series out there, including the following:

  • Bleach
  • Dragon Ball Z
  • One Piece
  • Naruto
  • Demon Slayer
  • JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
  • Attack On Titan

@A2TwillDraw also included his own visual style in the mix, which actually wasn't bad at all!

As stated, the animated Spider-Verse movies have clearly carried an anime influence in their DNA. The Oscar-winning first film, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, acknowledged as much by including the character Peni Parker, aka SP//dr (voiced by Kimiko Glenn), in the ranks of the multiversal team Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson) put together. That was a major signal flare to anime fans that their genre was getting love from this franchise.

Peni Parker doesn't really appear in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse that much - appearing with the rest of the original Spider-Verse team at the very end, to set up an arc in the third film. Across the Spider-Verse decided to expand its focus to the larger global scope of animation, capturing everything from Spider-Man 2099's sleek future world to Spider-Man India's colorful style and design aesthetic.

What Is Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse About?

Miles Morales returns to the big screen with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse now playing in theaters after premiering on June 2nd.

The Academy's "Members Only" Spotlights Two Marvel Composers https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/the-academy-members-only-marvel-composers/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 15:00:00 +0000 Liam Crowley 1eebf52d-3bda-4fb4-9931-17b7962f30e4

The Academy's latest endeavor into auxiliary content comes in the form of Members Only. This four-part interview series takes two Academy members of the same branch, one new and one established, and has them engage in conversation. Members Only debuted last week with a conversation between Troy Kotsur (CODA) and Paul Raci (Sound of Metal), two actors who paved the way for hard of hearing talents across the industry.

This week, Members Only is turning towards composers. Episode 2 spotlights Natalie Holt (Loki) and Pinar Toprak (Captain Marvel) as they discuss how they have broken the rules of their classical backgrounds as well as their unique journeys along their respective creative processes.

"I kind of enjoy all the different parts of [composing] equally, but I never enjoy finishing. I always feel like I want to keep tweaking this so maybe I can add some more," Holt said during the episode. "I find it really hard to kind of reach that cutoff point where you have to deliver a cue and stop mixing something."

Fans will recognize Holt as the maestro behind many blockbuster franchises as of late. She gained immediate acclaim for her work on Loki Season 1 and followed that up with collaborative work alongside John Williams on Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Toprak has been in the entertainment industry for roughly the same time as Holt but has already scored a career's worth of projects. While she has dozens of filmography credits, Toprak's work has extended to both streaming and video games, as she worked on Prime Video Sports' theme song as well as music for Fortnite.

"It's such a great honor to be part of this community that we've all loved and admired. I've been watching the Oscars since I was six years old," Toprak noted. "I haven't missed one. I would wake up at three in the morning in Istanbul and watch the Oscars."

Members Only Episode 2 is now streaming on The Academy's YouTube channel.

Disneyland Shares Trailer For Rogers: The Musical https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/disneyland-trailer-rogers-the-musical-california-adventure-avengers-campus/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 14:24:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 8513079c-d97c-46f8-bc91-5c8c9e446860

Disneyland has released the trailer for Rogers: The Musical and fans are really excited to see the show. On YouTube, Disney posted the clip that chronicles Steve Rogers's entire journey through the MCU. It feels like that tiny glimpse in Hawkeye really jumpstarted things in a real way. From the moment that Rogers: The Musical appeared on the Disney+ series, the possibility of this happening in real-time seemed likely.

Kevin Feige and the team at Marvel Studios seemed to think so too. So, when D23 rolled around last year, it shouldn't have been a surprise to see the Steve Rogers-led dance number "Save the City" leading the entire presentation off for Marvel. Now, fans can go see the musical for themselves tomorrow at Disney's California Adventure!

Here's how Disney describes the show: "As part of the Disney100 celebration at Disneyland Resort, the Hyperion Theater at Disney California Adventure Park presents "Rogers: The Musical" - an all-new, one-act live theater production performing for a limited time, June 30-Aug. 31, 2023."

"Inspired by the fictional musical number from the first episode of the Disney+ series "Hawkeye," the real-life "Rogers: The Musical" tells the story of Steve Rogers - Captain America, including his relationship with Peggy Carter," they continued. "The 30-minute show was brought to life through the creativity of Disney Live Entertainment, in partnership with book writer Hunter Bell and featuring music by Grammy-winning composer Christopher Lennertz."

How Did Rogers: The Musical Make It To Hawkeye?

disneyland-rogers-the-musical.jpg
(Photo: Disney Parks)

Hawkeye bringing Rogers: The Musical into the MCU started with just an idea. As head writer Jonathan Igla drove into work, he would pass a Hamilton billboard. He had the idea of doing something like that, but for Steve Rogers. When the scribe jokingly mentioned it to Kevin Feige, he was surprised to get the push to chase that idea.

"It was one of the most fun things," Igla previously said on the red carpet. "Every day on my commute I drove by with my fianc? who was also my second-in-command on the show, Lisa clam. We would drive by a 'Hamilton' billboard every morning on the way to the writers' room, and one morning I just thought 'Rogers: The Musical.' And we started talking about it and it expanded."

He added, "One of the great things about working for Marvel is if you have an idea that starts out small or medium, it sort of started out medium I would say, and you pitch it to them and everyone is tickled by it and everyone is excited by it. They're willing to pick it up and run with it and make it even bigger, and I'm so excited for people to see."

Kevin Feige Made Some Calls To Help Secure Talent

rogers-the-musical-disney-california-adventure.png

Academy Award-nominated composers Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman weren't expecting to speak to Kevin Feige. But, the Marvel Studios head had a chat with them about Rogers: The Musical and everything just kind of scooted along the tracks.

"[Scott and I] were at an Academy Award dinner, and I'm sitting there and someone taps me on the shoulder and says, 'Excuse me, Kevin Feige would love to meet you,'" Shaiman remembered. "I knew who Kevin was, and I was like he wants to meet me, really? Turns out Kevin is a film score nerd. He started talking about [the scores I've written] one by one and I was like, I cannot believe this is happening. We started trading emails about scores and this and that, and when I would see [Marvel movies] I would send him an email. I guess when this idea came up for Hawkeye, for there to be a musical on Broadway, he luckily thought of us, and [Scott and I] couldn't be more ecstatic about it."

Will you be going to see Rogers the Musical? Let us know in the comments!

ATEEZ Reveals What Inspired Their New Music, Favorite Marvel Superheroes, and More https://comicbook.com/anime/news/ateez-reveals-what-inspired-their-new-music-favorite-marvel-superheroes-and-more/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 02:23:00 +0000 Matthew Aguilar 0643362c-f53f-435e-92dd-e81515d5e128

The wait for ATEEZ's anticipated new music is finally over, as The World Ep.2: Outlaw is finally out in the wild. With the additive track Bouncy leading the way, ATEEZ looks to have another collection of hits on their hands, and in the midst of their incredibly busy schedules ComicBook.com had the chance to speak to the group all about the new music, but that's not all. Hongjoong, Seonghwa, Yunho, Yeosang, San, Mingi, Wooyoung, and Jongho also happen to be Marvel fans, and so we couldn't pass up the opportunity to learn a bit more about their love of the Marvel Universe and the heroes that call it home.

First though we wanted to know about the first half of their latest tour, which featured stops in the United States, Europe, Seoul, and Japan. They are set to head to Asia and Latin America next, but for the first half, we wanted to know what their favorite memories from their experience so far and what they had taken away most from the tour.

ateez-the-world-ep-2-outlaw-concept-02-group-02.jpg
(Photo: KQ Entertainment)

"Well, before all else, I want to say that we're always so happy to be able to go to so many countries and perform in front of fans that we don't get to see often," Hongjoong said. "In terms of what we take away, I think that comes naturally when we perform on stage, check over our performances, and communicate with the fans on tour. We learn from our performances and interactions to know what we can improve on and add to make it better. Besides that, some of my favorite memories come from the time during tours between shows when we can experience and enjoy the different places that ATINY live in first hand."

"I want to first thank all the ATINY who came out to see us," Wooyoung said. "There were some countries that we were visiting for the first time, so it was a very meaningful tour. We're so excited to see ATINY at our upcoming shows too!"

The World EP.2: Outlaw hit the ground running with the aptly titled Bouncy, a track that more than lives up to its name, and the track came together pretty organically. "BOUNCY is a song that came together really naturally. It's a track that was born out of the perfect combination of EDENARY's sound direction and ATEEZ's performance spectrum," Hongjoong said.

When we asked about interesting points to your new music overall, Yeosang said "I'd say an interesting point to our new music is how the words 'Cheongyang gochu (Cheongyang chili pepper)' was implemented into the song. It's a story that Hongjoong talked to me about before and it's actually really funny." Jongho said, "I guess I'd say the part where all the songs on this album have really different, but bold and strong colors."

Now, we had to talk a little Marvel, as there's a definitely love of the Marvel Universe and some of its most iconic heroes within the group. While there were a few picks, Spider-Man and Iron Man happened to come up the most, though there was also some love for Marvel's famed archer Hawkeye, and the Captain himself Captain America.

ateez-the-world-ep-2-outlaw-mv-poster.jpg
(Photo: KQ Entertainment)

"Iron Man," Hongjoong said. "He's the first Marvel character I came across, and I love that he has his own sense of humor but maintains a weight to his words and actions." For Seonghwa, it was an easy answer. "Of course, it's Spider-Man! Yunho is a big fan, but I am, too. I watched the movie over five times," Seonghwa said. Yunho's answer also came easily, saying, "I am steadfast on Spider-Man. ATINY knows this about me too!"

"Iron Man is my favorite," Yeosang said. "I personally like robots and [*SPOILER ALERT*] I thought Iron Man was so brave and amazing when he sacrificed himself for everyone in the last fight with Thanos. For San, it's all about the star-spangled Avenger. "Captain America. There's something wonderful in the romance of his story," San said.

While Mingi isn't as big into Marvel, he does still appreciate one particular hero. "I'm not as into Marvel characters like the others, but I do like Hawkeye," Mingi said. "I like him because I think he's the most realistic amongst them."

Wooyoung keeps it simple, and you can't argue with the reasoning. "Iron Man," Wooyoung said. "For the simple reason that the suit is so cool!" Jongho agrees and for similar reasons. "I think I like Iron Man the most. I remember watching the scene when I was younger in one of the movies where Iron Man puts on his suit and I thought it was the coolest thing," Jongho said.

Mingi also added that if a Marvel hero were to get an anime, it would be Hawkeye he'd love to see in that spot. "Hawkeye. I think it'd be interesting to see an anime adaptation with a more realistic character from the Marvel series as a hero," Mingi said.

We've got more from our full interview with ATEEZ coming to ComicBook.com very soon, and you can listen to and download The World EP.2: OUTLAW in its entirety right here. You can also watch the official MV for Bouncy right here.

Tom Hardy Shares First Venom 3 Set Photo https://comicbook.com/movies/news/tom-hardy-shares-first-venom-3-set-photo/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 01:25:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson a4936405-dc95-4faf-9994-98b3cac2445e

The first two Venom films became surprise successes, showcasing the bizarre superhero adventures of Eddie Brock / Venom (Tom Hardy). A threequel to the Venom franchise is currently in the works, with set photos earlier this week revealing that production has already begun. Hardy, who not only returns as Eddie but co-wrote the Venom 3's story, recently took to Instagram to celebrate the occasion. In a photo, which you can check out here, Hardy shows himself in costume snarling at some canine-themed graffiti on set, captioned "V3????."

New cast members for Venom 3 will include Juno Temple and Chiwetel Ejiofor, who are cast in currently-unknown roles.

What is Venom 3 about?

Venom 3 will be directed by Kelly Marcel (Fifty Shades of Grey), who wrote and produced the first two Venom movies alongside Tom Hardy. Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, Amy Pascal, and Hutch Parker will all produce alongside Marcel and Hardy. Plot details are currently unknown at this time, but Hardy has stressed the importance of getting the story right.

"These things [usually] come in threes," Hardy explained in a previous interview with Digital Spy. "If there's going to be a new one - and they depend heavily on the success of each individual one, so you can't count on them ever happening again - every one has got to be as if it was the last one. But I think it's really important, if you go into something, thinking that one, two and three are the same... the same story, the same film. So that you don't surprise yourself by being caught out by suddenly having to do a third from nowhere. There's got to be some continuity into a third and fourth and fifth, and if somebody says 'no', that's fine. Let it go, and you move on to something else."

What Sony Marvel movies are next?

This fall will bring the debut of Kraven the Hunter, directed by J.C. Chando and starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the titular big-game hunter and Ariana DeBose as Calypso. The cast also includes Christopher Abbott, Alessandro Nivola, Russell Crowe, Fred Hechinger, and Levi Miller. There's also Madame Web, directed by S.J. Clarkson, with Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Emma Roberts, Celeste O'Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahir Rahim, Zosia Mamet, Mike Epps, and Adam Scott. Sony also has two additional films dated for November 8, 2024 and June 27, 2025.

"There are movies I would call adjunct to the Spider-Man universe," Sony president Tom Rothman previously said of Sony's Marvel plans (via Deadline). "That's Kraven, which we're shooting now, and Madame Web, which we'll start in the spring with S.J. Clarkson directing. And then there are many Marvel characters that are standalone."

#10: AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #209 | MARVEL | 1980 | Well, the new Kraven trailer certainly has the fandom divided. What has them less divided is the excitement for Calypso, played by Ariana DeBose in the upcoming Kraven film. Originally the one who bestowed powers onto Kraven, many anticipate she will hold the same role in the upcoming film. Collectors visited the aftermarket to secure a copy of her first appearance. We tracked it at a high sale of $287 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a raw VF FMV of $44.

#9: THE TRANSFORMERS #11 | MARVEL | 1985 | Jetfire is back! The community was pumped to see him make a return in Void Rivals #1, moving to pick up his first appearance on the aftermarket. That trend continues this week, now that Void Rivals has made it into the hands of even more collectors as they anticipate he will play a significant role in future properties. We tracked it at a high sale of $165 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a raw VF FMV of $8.

#8: COYOTES #1 | IMAGE | 2017 | Coyotes was recently thrust into the limelight when it was announced "Selena Gomez and Jordan Peele are developing a series adaptation for Prime Video. The series follows a group of women who take a stand against a legion of werewolves that have been hunting them. This book got hot quickly but is seeing some moderate cool-down this week. We tracked it at a high sale of $124 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a raw NM FMV of $16.

#7: WAR OF THE REALMS: NEW AGENTS OF ATLAS #1 | MARVEL | 2019 | Rumors of Blackpink's Jennie joining the MCU's first-ever Asian superhero team as New Agents of Atlas team member Luna Snow. Her first appearance (amongst several other members) in this issue is still going strong despite no confirmation. We tracked it at a high sale of $100 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a raw NM FMV of $39

#6: THE SICKNESS #1 | UNCIVILIZED COMICS | 2023 | Tales of the macabre and the melancholy are indeed experiencing a renaissance as of late. This book falls into that camp, a black-and-white story about a mysterious illness that makes people lose their marbles. Securing a copy within the aftermarket was challenging, hence the price surge. However, many fans were able to secure a copy from Uncivilized's website. As those buyers receive their orders, expect more copies to be listed. We tracked it at a high sale of $25 for a raw copy and an NM FMV of $22.

#5: MARVEL SUPER-HEROES SECRET WARS #8 | MARVEL | 1984 | We've said all we can about this book over the numerous times it's popped up on this list. It's a modern grail that features the origin of the black suit that would later become Venom. Every few weeks, there's a strange surge of sales, including this week's high sale of $680 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a raw NM FMV of $156.

#4: SPIDER-MAN #7 - HUMBERTO RAMOS - TOP SECRET SPOILER | MARVEL | 2023 | As mentioned last week, Spider-Boy is here to stay. This book was all the rage when it was released, amplified by last week's Edge of Spider-Verse #3 revealing his face and full name, Bailey Briggs. Additionally, there's a solicitation for a future solo run, and all signs point to significant plans for the young Mr. Briggs. We tracked it at a high sale of $123 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a raw NM FMV of $34.

#3: HULK ANNUAL #1 - GARY FRANK - REGULAR | MARVEL | 2023 | This book saw a nice run after its May 2023 release due to this issue being a prelude and original story for the new Hulk run! While also featuring the first appearance of the Eldest, fans have met this new series with high reviews and high expectations for subsequent issues. We tracked it at a high sale of $55 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a raw NM FMV of $13.

#2: SHE-HULK #3 | MARVEL | 2004 | The Ghost of murdered Hammer Aeronautics engineer Bailey Briggs is trending due to the shared name of the already mentioned Spider-Boy. Our dear Spider-Boy is clearly not a ghost, so an inference can be made that they're not the same person. Yet this book has remained in the top 10 for two weeks. What game are you playing Dan Slott (who also wrote this issue of She-Hulk in 2004)? Could there be something larger at play here? The community eagerly awaits the next clue. We tracked it at a high sale of $50 for a raw copy and a VF FMV of $11.

#1: SPIDER-MAN 2099 #1 | MARVEL | 1992 | Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is commanding the box office, driven by a top-tier written script and excellent voice performances, like Oscar Isaac as Miguel O" Hara, AKA Spider-Man 2099. Fans continue to flock to this prevalent and cheap key, featuring the first ongoing issue for the futuristic crime fighter. There is much more in store for ole Miguel, and the fans can't wait to see it. We tracked it at a high sale of $200 for a CGC 9.8 and a raw NM FMV of $22.

Secret Invasion: Nick Fury's Wife's Marvel Comics History Explained https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/secret-invasion-nick-fury-wife-marvel-history-explained/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 00:44:00 +0000 Nathaniel Brail a5429447-8a20-43a1-8907-fa0bf20ce4b8

Marvel Studios has a lot of projects in development that range from television to movies, and they have finally released their first series of the year. Initial reviews for Secret Invasion have been mixed so far, and from everything we've seen in the trailers, each episode could be a wild ride. Secret Invasion, the first Disney+ series, had its big premiere last week, and it did some pretty big things like kill off a major Avengers character. This week, they pulled off one more major reveal with the huge revelation about Nick Fury (Jackson). Warning: Spoilers for this week's episode of Secret Invasion are ahead.

During the episode, it was revealed that Fury actually has a wife and that she is also a Skrull. But Fury's wife isn't just any Skrull; she was actually a Skrull from Marvel Comics history named Varra. In the episode, Varra is also the same Skrull that introduces Fury to Gravik, which makes sense considering Fury is going out of his way to find the Skrull a viable planet to live on.

Who is Varra in Marvel Comics History?

According to Fandom, "Varra was one of the Knights of the Infinite. When the evil wizard Moridun killed and took over the corpse of the elder M'ryn, Varra was one of the three unfortunate Knights that Moridun decided to feast upon. However, the rest of the Knights had returned from the Earth after kidnapping Hulkling and Wiccan, and they interrupted Moridun before he could finish absorbing Varra's soul. When she was freed from the villain's grasp, Wiccan proceeded to use his magic to heal her."

Secret Invasion premieres June 21st on Disney+.

Captain America: Brave New World: Anthony Mackie Reveals Reaction to Title Change https://comicbook.com/movies/news/captain-america-brave-new-world-anthony-mackie-title-change-reaction/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 00:17:00 +0000 Timothy Adams ddb4f6d1-6120-4e3a-b917-ac1cc4bbac13

Anthony Mackie claims to be surprised just like the rest of us by the recent title change to Captain America: Brave New World. Formerly titled Captain America: New World Order, the fourth Captain Americafilm will be the first starring Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson. Marvel Studios revealed the updated title earlier this month, with Mackie sharing a photo alongside co-star Harrison Ford. Of course, fans were caught by surprise to see New World Order change to Brave New World, but surely its headlining actor was aware of the change, right? Anthony Mackie recently set the record straight.

Inverse spoke to Anthony Mackie about his upcoming role in Peacock's adaptation of the popular Twisted Metal video game franchise, as well as Captain America: Brave New World. However, Mackie claimed innocence when it came to knowledge about the updated title. "I have no idea. They were like, 'We're changing the title.' I was like, 'All right, let's do it.' So that was it," he said.

Now, it's totally possible Mackie is only pretending to not be aware of the reasons behind Captain America: Brave New World's title change. Marvel actors are simultaneously pros at not leaking any secrets regarding their projects, while also being kept in the dark by Marvel Studios. After all, Mackie said he didn't know what role he was accepting when directors Joe and Anthony Russo first spoke to him about playing Sam Wilson in 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier, though he was hoping to play Black Panther.

Anthony Mackie Talks About "Intimidating" Scenes With Harrison Ford

Marvel Studios is currently filming a bunch of projects that range from television to film, and fans are excited for the next wave of releases. Captain America 4, aka Captain America: Brave New World, is one of those projects currently filming. Harrison Ford is taking over the late great William Hurt's role as Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, and it's already been revealed that there are some big plans for the character. Mackie has filmed with some of the greatest actors of all time during his tenure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but filming with the likes of Ford may have been a little intimidating.

"The first day was so intimidating," Anthony Mackie told Inverse. "I was so f*cking nervous I couldn't remember my lines. He's Harrison f*cking Ford. There is this aura about him. But he dispels that really quickly because he's such a cool guy. He's everything a movie star should be. He would say, 'Let's shoot this piece of sh*t.' And everybody was like, 'Yeah, let's shoot this sh*t.'" Mackie can't go into specifics about his scenes with Ford, but he notes that there are plenty of them. "We spent a good bit of time together. Ross and Cap have always had that relationship, where they were friends and they respected each other, but they always bumped heads. That's their relationship in the storyline."

Captain America: Brave New World now has a release date of July 26, 2024.

Riz Ahmed Addresses Possible Star Wars or Venom Return (Exclusive) https://comicbook.com/movies/news/nimona-riz-ahmed-addresses-star-wars-venom-return-exclusive/ Wed, 28 Jun 2023 22:13:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson f3f4abbb-20d3-49c7-a007-14c749d6d6b2

Riz Ahmed has had a pretty eclectic career over the years, between Oscar-winning work and massive blockbusters. Two of the biggest films Ahmed has been in might be 2016's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, in which he played Resistance cargo pilot Bodhi Rook, and 2018's Marvel picture Venom, in which he played the villainous Carlton Drake / Riot. With the third Venom movie just beginning production this week, and the Rogue One prequel series Star Wars: Andor gearing up for its second season, there are definitely narrative opportunities for Ahmed to possibly appear in either role. While speaking to ComicBook.com about his role as Lord Ballister Boldheart in the upcoming Netflix movie Nimona, Ahmed revealed that he would gladly continue "working with great people" on either project, but he also recognizes a reprisal of his characters might not be needed.

"I'm always interested in working with great people on anything that feels like I could be helpful," Ahmed explained in our interview, which you can check out above. "At the same time, I also realize that being a team player means you come in and you do a bit, and it has a start and an end."

What Is Nimona About?

In Nimona, when Ballister Boldheart (Riz Ahmed), a knight in a futuristic medieval world, is framed for a crime he didn't commit, the only one who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona (Chlo? Grace Moretz), a mischievous teen with a taste for mayhem -- who also happens to be a shapeshifting creature Ballister has been trained to destroy. But with the entire kingdom out to get him, Nimona's the best (or technically the only) sidekick Ballister can hope for. And as the lines between heroes, villains, and monsters start to blur, the two of them set out to wreak serious havoc -- for Ballister to clear his name once and for all, and for Nimona to...just wreak serious havoc.

Nimona, which ended up at Netflix after being canceled mid-production at Blue Sky Studios, is directed by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane. The film also stars Eugene Lee Yang as Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin, Frances Conroy as The Director, and Beck Bennett as Sir Thoddeus Sureblade. It is based on N.D. Stevenson's beloved graphic novel of the same name.

"I just can't wait for people to sit, to meet Nimona, and what Chloe has done with Nimona," Ahmed said elsewhere in our interview. "It's just next level. We all know she's an amazing actor, but I just think this incredibly kind of sprightly, mischievous, hilarious character that she has brought to life. I honestly think is just kind of a classic personality, a classic character, and I just can't wait for people to meet her."

Do you want to see Riz Ahmed return to the Star Wars or Marvel universes? Are you excited to see his performance in Nimona? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below!

Nimona will debut exclusively on Netflix on Friday, June 30th.

Secret Invasion: Does Nick Fury Know SPOILER Is a Skrull? https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/secret-invasion-does-nick-fury-know-wife-skrull-varry-priscilla-explained/ Wed, 28 Jun 2023 21:02:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw 71f8d79f-741a-45fd-b1c1-969f82a48830

Secret Invasion Episode 2 left a lot of Marvel fans reeling and swooning alike when it was revealed that we really don't know Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and what his life is all about.

(MAJOR SPOILERS) In Secret Invasion Episode 2, Fury is, himself, reeling from the death of his longtime second-in-command, Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders), at the gunpoint of Skrull radical Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir). Over the course of the episode, Fury learns all kinds of new details about what transpired on Earth since he's been off-world on S.A.B.E.R., and it's enough to significantly stress him out. By the end of Episode 2, Fury decides to go home for some rest and relaxation - and we find out that Mr. Super-Spy has a wife, Priscilla Fury (Charlayne Woodard) and that she is also a Skrull!

Does Nick Fury Know His Wife Is A Skrull?

The debate within the Marvel fandom has been whether Nick Fury knows his wife is actually a Skrull, or if that Skrull is an infiltrator positioned next to Fury, undermining his efforts. The edits of the final scene seem to be somewhat ambiguous, as Fury doesn't come around the corner and see his wife until she's transformed into her human form. The fact that Fury doesn't interact with his wife in Skrull form has some convinced it's a secret.

However... There's pretty strong evidence earlier in Secret Invasion Episode 2 that Fury indeed knows his wife is a Skrull, and has had extensive history with her.

The opening of Episode 2, went back in time to 1997, as Fury tries to deal with helping Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) place the Skrull refugees still on Earth undercover with new human identities. In the scene, there is a female Skrull named "Varra" who approaches Fury and introduces him to a young Gravik. It's implied that Varra is kind of like a social worker or activist type, helping her people. Either way, it is this same female Skrull character, Varra, who is actually Fury's wife Priscilla.

The implication here is pretty clear: Varra/Priscilla seems like she is noble-hearted, loves her people, and is a protector/helper type that would attract a man like Nick Fury. It's equally easy to understand how working together with Varra and Talos to aid the Skrull refugees brought him closer to both Skrulls. It's also even easier to then understand why Fury keeps his marriage as protected and secret as Clint Barton/Hawkeye did, if his wife is actually a shape-shifting alien that would up-end Fury's standing in the espionage community.

In fact, making Priscilla an evil Skrull operative betraying Fury would be far more cheap and reductive than making her the center of his universe. A Skrull wife explains the reason why Fury has been so motivated to help the Skrulls find a new world - and why he feels so conflicted about his failure to do so, and what that failure has done to the likes of Gravik. After all, if Nick Fury does get all the Skrulls to leave Earth, where does that leave his marriage? And if his secret comes out, how many allies would really have his back when humanity itself is on the line?

Secret Invasion streams new episodes Wednesdays on Disney+.

Secret Invasion: Christopher McDonald's Role Revealed https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/secret-invasion-christopher-mcdonald-role-revealed-skrull-mcu-spoilers/ Wed, 28 Jun 2023 20:52:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson d21ed542-8fff-49c2-bee7-4dfe6a38ecf0

Marvel Studios' television shows are capturing the public consciousness in compelling ways, and Secret Invasion is the latest to join the list. The live-action Disney+ series boasts a pretty compelling ensemble cast, including a number of new additions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and fans have speculated at length as to who they could be playing. That includes Happy Gilmore and Hacks actor Christopher McDonald, and in the series' second episode, we discovered who he is playing. Spoilers for the second episode of Secret Invasion below! Only look if you want to know!

Midway through the episode, audiences are shown media coverage of the Skrull attack on Russia, and the various real-world figures who are reacting to the ordeal -- only to reveal that nearly every major player is part of the secret Skrull council. Among these members is Chris Stern, a cable news anchor played by McDonald -- and who is quickly revealed to be a Skrull. While this might not be the Norman Osborn fancasts that fans had had when McDonald was first cast, it's still an interesting role for him to factor into the series.

Why did Christopher McDonald join Secret Invasion?

As McDonald explained in a 2021 interview, he had been "praying for" the opportunity to join the MCU in some capacity.

"That was a fun phone call," McDonald explained. "My agent and my manager got together. They called me and said, 'Chris, are you sitting down?' I said, 'I'm in my car, I'm driving home.' 'Yeah, you might want to pull over.' I said, 'Whoa, what's happening?' 'No, it's good. Pull over.' They tell me about this whole offer that comes in to join the MCU, and I'm like, 'Wow! This is only something I've been praying for because it's the number one thing that comes out of Hollywood.'"

"Kevin Feige just kills it," McDonald added. "It's spectacular, 23 movies they're in now, and now the television shows with WandaVision and Loki. It's an actor's dream. So I'm going to come to London and make this thing happen in a month's time. I think a month and a half's time I'll be there doing it."

What Is Secret Invasion About?

The MCU's top superspy Nick Fury is back in Secret Invasion, the limited series premiering June 21st on Disney+.

"People haven't seen it, so, you know, you ain't getting nothing from me, right," Mendelsohn told ComicBook.com in a recent interview. "But we do deal a lot more with what's going on. I mean, one spoiler. I will give you. There is an invasion in the show, right? It is a secret. That's the other part of it. But getting to deal with the rifts, the fault lines of that invasion, we get to explore different starts to that."

Captain America 4: Anthony Mackie Teases "Intimidating" Scenes With Harrison Ford https://comicbook.com/movies/news/captain-america-4-anthony-mackie-teases-intimidating-harrison-ford/ Wed, 28 Jun 2023 20:27:00 +0000 Nathaniel Brail a0674003-0d07-4ae3-83c5-9ac673abb12c

Marvel Studios is currently filming a bunch of projects that range from television to film, and fans are excited for the next wave of releases. Captain America 4, aka Captain America: Brave New World, is one of those projects currently filming and even revealed that they were changing the title with a cool behind-the-scenes image of Harrison Ford and Anthony Mackie on set. Ford is taking over the late great William Hurt's role as Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, and it's already been revealed that there are some big plans for the character. Mackie has already filmed with some of the greatest actors of all time during his tenure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but filming with the likes of Ford may have been a little intimidating. While speaking with Inverse for the upcoming live-action adaptation of Twisted Metal, Mackie revealed that he was very nervous to film with the iconic actor.

"The first day was so intimidating," Mackie revealed to the website.

What will happen in Captain America 4?

With Captain America 4 currently filming, fans have begun to wonder just what exactly could Marvel Studios have up their sleeves for Sam Wilson's star spangled hero. He clearly is now donning the shield, but it seems like there's drama on the horizon judging by the events of Black Panther Wakanda Forever and the United States' ambitions on the world stage. If you also add the ongoing multiverse crisis that not all of the heroes may know about, Captain America may have too much on his plate.

"I think, he's not Steve Rogers and I think that's a good thing," Producer Nate Moore told the hosts of ComicBook.com's Phase Zero podcast. "Because to me, this new Cap is Rocky. He's going to be the underdog in any situation. He's not a super soldier. He's not a hundred years old. He doesn't have the Avengers."

He continued, "What happens with this guy who announces publicly kind of, without the support, 'I'm new Captain America.' What happens next? I think is fascinating because he's a guy. He's a guy with wings and a shield, but he is a guy. So, we're going to put him through the wringer and make him earn it, and see what happens when he is outweighed, outclassed, out-everything. What makes somebody Captain America? I'm going to argue it's not being a super soldier. And I think we're going to prove that with Mackie and Sam Wilson."

When is Captain America 4 Coming Out?

Captain America: Brave New World is set to bring back Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Captain America, and will also star Harrison Ford as Thaddeus Ross, Carl Lumbly as Isaiah Bradley, Danny Ramirez as Joaquin Torres, and Tim Blake Nelson as Dr. Samuel Sterns, reprising his role from 2008's The Incredible Hulk. Shira Haas is making her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as the iconic Marvel comics character Sabra in the film. Captain America: Brave New World is being directed by Julius Onah (The Cloverfield Paradox).

Captain America: Brave New World is expected to hit theaters on May 3, 2024.

Marvel's Anthony Mackie Reacts to Jonathan Majors Allegations https://comicbook.com/movies/news/marvel-jonathan-majors-allegations-anthony-mackie-reacts/ Wed, 28 Jun 2023 20:26:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 1e026598-869d-4779-80c4-327d83215bda

Captain America: Brave New World star Anthony Mackie offered his take on the Jonathan Majors situation. During an interview for Twisted Metal, the Marvel actor told Inverse that he's willing to let the process play out. Mackie argued that the United States was found upon the idea of "everyone is innocent until proven guilty." So, there's that sentiment floating there too. As of now, we have no news if Jonathan Majors will be involved with the MCU going forward after Loki Season 2. But, even if he's completely cleared, it's clear this will be a discussion among fans for a while now. Check out what he had to say down below.

"We're a country that was built on 'everyone is innocent until proven guilty,'" he says. "That's one of the staples of this country. Nothing has been proven about this dude. Nothing. So everyone is innocent until proven guilty. That's all I can say. It's crazy where we are as a society. But as a country, everyone is innocent until proven guilty."

Jonathan Majors' Representation Argues His Innocence

"Jonathan Majors is completely innocent and is provably the victim of an altercation with a woman he knows," Priya Chaudhry wrote in a previous statement. "We are quickly gathering and presenting evidence to the District Attorney with the expectation that all charges will be dropped imminently."

"All the evidence proves that Mr. Majors is entirely innocent and did not assault her whatsoever," Chaudhry added. "Unfortunately, this incident came about because this woman was having an emotional crisis, for which she was taken to a hospital yesterday. The NYPD is required to make an arrest in these situations, and this is the only reason Mr. Majors was arrested. We expect these charges to be dropped soon."

Marvel Studios Put Jonathan Majors at The Forefront of Their Plans

Marvel has taken a huge step in handing the keys to The Multiverse Saga to Jonathan Majors. On The Ringer's Big Picture Podcast, Joanna Robinson said that the studio was so impressed with the Kang actor in Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania and Loki that they shifted their plans for the future.

"We know this is a huge problem for them that they are facing and grappling with right now. And what's unprecedented in this for Marvel is, I would argue they have never hung so much of a franchise on one actor as they tried to hang it on Jonathan Majors after his Loki performance and his Ant-Man: Quantumania performance," Robinson mused.

"I would argue more than Downey as Iron Man, more than Brolin as Thanos, that hanging everything on this guy is then going to pop up in all of their properties leading up to something called The Kang Dynasty has put them in a very unusual position," she also mentioned. "They don't usually hang this much on one person in the way that they did here. And that has but hem in the bind. We do not know what they are going to do. I've heard conflicting stories that they are going to replace him, they're not even considering replacing him, etc. etc. But it's just one more thing."

Anthony Mackie Reveals He Wrote Marvel Studios Letters Begging to Play Black Panther https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/anthony-mackie-marvel-studios-letters-black-panther/ Wed, 28 Jun 2023 19:45:00 +0000 Liam Crowley a2a8c5e7-f6fb-4c00-b7d7-248a081e2040

With a world as expansive as the Marvel Cinematic Universe, incoming talent rarely land either their first or the studio's first choice of characters. Doctor Strange actor Benedict Cumberbatch was once courted to play Thor: The Dark World villain Malekith but he ultimately declined in favor of waiting out for something better. Sebastian Stan auditioned for Captain America before being selected to play Bucky Barnes instead. Donald Glover wanted to play Miles Morales for years but aged out of the role by the time it got to the big screen, but Marvel still found a part for him in the form of Aaron Davis in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Miles's uncle.

This recurring theme can be applied to Anthony Mackie as well. Mackie made his MCU debut in 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier, suiting up as the Falcon. While that role proved to be wildly successful for the 8 Mile star, Mackie originally had a different hero in mind.

"I had been contacting Marvel a lot about Black Panther," Mackie told Inverse. "I had written them letters [in the early 2010s]. I was trying to find a way to make them make Black Panther. And I wanted to be Black Panther because growing up I f--king loved Black Panther."

Mackie's desire to play T'Challa came early, as a Black Panther movie wouldn't get the green light until Fall 2014. Chadwick Boseman was tapped to portray the character and debuted the role in May 2016's Captain America: Civil War ahead of his February 2018 solo movie.

Despite the Black Panther hopes falling through, Mackie was approached by the Russo Brothers in Summer 2012 about a then-top secret part in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

"I'll never forget, Joe Russo said, 'Listen, so we're doing this movie. We want you to be in it. We can't say what character you're playing or who else is going to be in it. Would you do it?' And that was it." Mackie recalled. "I was like, 'You know what, I like y'all dudes. I'll do it. I'll go on this ride with you.'"

That ride is still continuing to this day. Mackie has suited up as Falcon in six MCU movies and starred opposite Stan in his own self-titled Disney+ series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Mackie returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe next summer in Captain America: Brave New World, slated to hit theaters on July 26th, 2024.

Secret Invasion Reveals Major Avengers: Infinity War and Iron Man 3 Connections https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/secret-invasion-avengers-infinity-war-iron-man-3-connections/ Wed, 28 Jun 2023 18:49:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 90795d7a-0e73-4df1-9b02-54af1edb2f4d

Secret Invasion Episode 2 revealed a lot of connections to the larger MCU and surprising teases for where this show is headed. Both Avengers: Infinity War and Iron Man 3 have plot points arise during this episode fo the Disney+ show. Secret Invasion has Gi'ah, Talos's daughter, investigating what the rebel Skrull leader Gravik is up to in his secret base. Well, it turns out they're building a machine to combine powers from all over the Marvel Universe and augment their own alien abilities with it. The list of references is longer than you might think!

From Avengers: Infinity War, you have Cull Obsidian's genetic material. Being one of Thanos's minions, there are some super powers there. Alongside that is a bit of material from Groot! Yes, the same species as our friend from Guardians of the Galaxy. Also in the files are Extremis serum from Iron Man 3's villain, Aldridge Killian and genes from one of Thor's Frost Creatures that he battled against. It seems pretty clear that the Skrulls are trying to create a Super Skrull. Basically, a super-powered shape-shifter to truly kick the conquest of Earth into high gear.

What Other Twists Are Waiting In Secret Invasion?

It seems like this episode is just the tip of the iceberg for what Secret Invasion is bringing to the table. Recently, director Ali Selim spoke to SFX Magazine about the twists and turns in the series. He says that there are some constant threads that you can hang your hat on. But, let's be clear, the audience is very much out on a tightrope without a safety net. A lot of fans might be put off by the darker, more grounded tone of this show. But, others have been digging the MCU's return to spy craft in a major way.

"The audience can always trust Nick Fury, even though there's a twist in the show. And you can always trust his friend Talos," Selim told SFX Magazine.

The Plan Moving Forward In The Marvels

It seems like Marvel is looking ahead to The Marvels. In a recent interview with Sway's Universe, Jackson explained how The Marvels is looking a little more inclusive. With Brie Larson joined by Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani, there's three Captain Marvels to follow now. However, most fans have responded well to each of the heroines, so the future is looking bright.

"After Secret Invasion, I'm moving on to The Marvels, where you got like three different people who are Captain Marvel. You got Brie [Larson], you got a black Captain Marvel, and you got a Muslim Captain Marvel," Jackson said on Sway's Universe. "So, they're working on the universe in a way that's inclusive. Even like Shang-Chi and all those things that happen there. And... who the hell is Bad Bunny gonna be? Like, Bad Bunny's in the Marvel universe. Who that? What he gonna be?"

Wondering Where To Start With Secret Invasion?

The MCU's top superspy Nick Fury is back in Secret Invasion, the limited series premiering June 21st on Disney+.

Secret Invasion Confirms Major Detail About Guardians of the Galaxy Character https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/marvel-secret-invasion-episode-2-guardians-galaxy-groot-home-planet-x/ Wed, 28 Jun 2023 16:49:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw 211656a1-eb9d-4876-911a-bfca2e3c0363

In true espionage fashion, Secret Invasion Episode 2 managed to sneak in some pretty big developments for the Marvel Cinematic Universe that many viewers may have missed. However, if you know your intel about the MCU and the careful eye of a good spy, you could not only piece together what big Marvel Skrull event Secret Invasion is clearly foreshadowing but also spot one piece of information that finally confirms a longstanding mystery about one Guardians of the Galaxy character.

(WARNING: SPOILERS FOLLOW)

i-am-groot-empire-image.jpg
(Photo: Marvel Studios)

After reconnecting with her father Talos (Ben Mendelsohn), G'iah (Emilia Clarke) starts to have doubts about her allegiance to Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir), the Skrull radical who killed Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders). While back at Gravik's hideout, G'iah goes looking through computer files that Gravik is keeping secret, and discovers that the terrorist leader isn't just planning chaotic destabilization of Earth - he's also working on an experiment to enhance the Skrulls themselves.

Based on the bio for Groot (Vin Diesel) that shows up in Garvik's computer files, it's now confirmed that Groot is from Planet X - something the MCU hasn't confirmed concretely until now.

Groot actor Vin Diesel previously confirmed to ComicBook.com that he and Kevin Feige were once tossing around the idea of exploring Groot's origin, in "The Return to Planet X":

"If you're talking to [Marvel Studios boss Kevin] Feige," Diesel told our reporter, "You can ask him about the Groot story that he's excited about; the return to Planet X."

Clearly, that idea didn't happen (but that Groot animated series did?) but... now that's one more MCU mystery we can put to bed.

Marvel's Super-Skrulls Explained

marvel-super-skrull-explained.jpg
(Photo: Marvel Comics)

In Marvel Comics, the Super-Skrull Kl'rt has been one of the oldest foes of the Fantastic Four and other Marvel heroes. He was a soldier who was transformed by Skull Emperor Dorrek VII into a Skrull with the combined powers of the Fantastic Four (stretching, flame, rock skin, invisibility).

Marvel's "Secret Invasion" comic book event took the concept of "Super Skrulls" to a new level: the Skrull faction that went deep-cover and invaded Earth, also developed Skrulls that were artificially powered (with genetic experimentation and/or tech upgrades) with the abilities of many different Marvel heroes and villains (The Avengers, the X-Men, Fantastic Four, Nova, Doc Ock, etc.). These Super Skrulls were used as the brute force warriors that attacked Earth's heroes in the open, while other Skrulls used subterfuge to replace key people and sew paranoia and doubt to split the hero ranks.

From what we're seeing in Secret Invasion, the MCU Super-Skrull will be a hybrid of some of the universe's toughest creatures. Can't wait to see it.

Secret Invasion is now streaming on Disney+.

Chloe Bennet's Twitter Hacked By Crypto Company https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/chloe-bennet-twitter-hacked-crypto-company/ Wed, 28 Jun 2023 15:00:00 +0000 Timothy Adams 8bca23b6-6389-4aa7-b9b8-4a0752f9fdb9

A crypto company has apparently taken control of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. star Chloe Bennet's Twitter account. Now, it may be hard to determine that the @BlokedProtocol Twitter account previously belonged to Bennet when you go to the account's homepage. The theme leans heavily into web3 and the blockchain, but on a closer inspection of the account's media files finds photos from Chloe Bennet's archives. The group that pulled off the hack has also turned off comments from its posts, preventing other Twitter users from calling them out.

At this time it's not known if Chloe Bennet is going through the proper channels to regain possession of her Twitter account, but with all the recent changes Elon Musk has brought to the social media app since gaining ownership of it, who knows how long it will take for the issue to be worked out. However, Bennet's Instagram page appears to be safe.

Chloe Bennet Debunks Another Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Rumor

Chloe Bennet once again responded to inquiries regarding the possible return of her character from Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.The much-beloved series aired its final episode in 2020, marking the end of the road for Bennet's Daisy Johnson, Clark Gregg's Phil Coulson, and many more Marvel heroes. Since then, fans have speculated and theorized how Marvel Studios could incorporate those characters into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially since other TV heroes like Daredevil and Wilson Fisk have returned. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has a loyal fanbase, but for now, Bennet is debunking rumors of her return to the MCU.

The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. star spoke to Screen Rant where she was asked about a possible MCU return. However, Chloe Bennet told the outlet that she hasn't been contacted by anyone from Marvel Studios since Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. concluded.

"Of course. Of course, I would be open to it. Listen, there's a lot of stuff around that. I so deeply love S.H.I.E.L.D.'s fans because it's this tenacity that got the show on air to begin with," Bennet said. "I have not once been approached or asked or involved in anything after I wrapped S.H.I.E.L.D. And I am not involved in anything that is coming out. I've not been asked, but I would be more than excited to put on the suit again. And, of course, of course, Daisy is a big part of who I am. So I would love to, but I have not been communicated [with] about it."

Who is Ironheart?

Ironheart Riri Williams, who made her cinematic debut in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ahead of the upcoming Ironheart series on Disney+, debuted in Marvel Comics in 2016. Dominique Thorne debuted in a supporting character role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Her first major role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be leading the Ironheart streaming series.

Created by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Mike Deodato, Riri Williams debuted in Marvel Comics in 2016, taking over for Iron Man at a time when Tony Stark was believed dead. Her origin involves reverse-engineering Iron Man's armor into a suit for herself before eventually getting a new one with Iron Man's blessing.

In Invincible Iron Man #7, per Marvel's solicitation, "Tony Stark is in dire need of a win! But how does he plan to get ahead? By building a new suit of armor! The suit's first objective? Infiltrate and destroy Stark Industries!" Gerry Duggan writes the issue with art by Juan Frigeri.

hustl. Describes itself as "a retailer for exclusive Marvel custom comics & variants featuring world-class athletes and entertainers." Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, directed by Ryan Coogler, is streaming now on Disney+. The Ironheart streaming series, which pits Riri Williams against Marvel villain The Hood (Anthony Ramos), debuts on Disney+ in 2024. Since Ironheart made her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, some fans wonder if a Wakandan character like Shuri or Okoye could show up in the Disney+ show. Dominique Thorne had some thoughts about that.

Comic Book Reviews for This Week: 6/28/2023 https://comicbook.com/comics/news/new-comic-reviews-dc-marvel-image-june-28-2023/ Wed, 28 Jun 2023 15:00:00 +0000 Chase Magnett e83da675-ce87-484b-92a0-6339af072169

Welcome to this week in comic book reviews! The staff have come together to read and review nearly everything that released today. It isn't totally comprehensive, but it includes just about everything from DC and Marvel with the important books from the likes of Image, Boom, IDW, Dark Horse, Dynamite, and more.

The review blurbs you'll find contained herein are typically supplemented in part by longform individual reviews for significant issues. This week that includes Batman: The Brave and The Bold #2, Ghost Rider #15, and Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: 1957 - Fearful Symmetry #1.

Also, in case you were curious, our ratings are simple: we give a whole or half number out of five; that's it! If you'd like to check out our previous reviews, they are all available here.

DC #1

ACTION COMICS #1056

The finale of the "Metallo Rising" arc isn't without issue - the defeat of our villain feels like it comes a little too fast which is a bit frustrating given how expertly sadistic Cyborg Superman has been set up to be here, but that rushed pacing is rewarded with what might be some of the best character work for other characters one could ask for in comics. Johnson does a brilliant job with Metallo, giving the character incredible humanity that feels like it is setting up for something more without distracting from the overall narrative. The backup stories here are pretty good - Jurgens' story does get a little darker than expected with its villain, but it's not unwelcome, and the conclusion to the Steel backup story is solid as well. All around this is a great issue of Action. -- Nicole Drum

BATMAN: THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD #2

Anthologies can be a tough sale for readers, especially in superhero comics. A higher price point promises more stories, but with varied creators, characters, and context; plus, there's always the concern amongst superhero readers about whether these stories "count." Batman: The Brave and The Bold sets out to set a high standard for the publication model and produce a DC Comics anthology that qualifies as a must-read. The series assembles a collection of headlining writers and artists, each of whom could carry a solo series featuring the characters from their stories, together in one of the most ambitious anthologies of 2023. -- Chase Magnett

Rating: 4.5 out of 5

CITY BOY #2

City Boy's unconventional concept makes way for a chaotic, but still intriguing, new chapter. While the narrative of the Greg Pak is relatively simple, that allows it to unfold at a breezy but monumental context. The art from Minkyu Jung is expressive and ridiculous, but just grounded enough to help us feel pathos for this larger-than-life adventure. If City Boy keeps up this energy, it could be a bizarre and significant chapter in the "Dawn of DC" era. -- Jenna Anderson

Rating: 4 out of 5

DETECTIVE COMICS #1073

Detective Comics #1073 sets up a dangerous new Gotham, one that isolates Batman even further and whittles away his remaining allies, while placing the Orghams as a fundamental threat to the city and its populace. My one criticism about this issue is that the issue has spent so long foreshadowing the doom to come, it's a bit of a letdown that the "doom" is just more portents and promises of even worse times ahead. Still, I have absolute faith in Ram V to keep delivering what's been an unsettling and potentially status quo shaking arc so far. -- Christian Hoffer

Rating: 4 out of 5

FABLES #159

Fables #159 is the best issue of the series' revival, in part because it comes closest to capture the form of the original series. Fables was always at its strongest when it lulled readers into a false sense of security before it did something shocking that escalated the stakes and story in a surprising way. I was perhaps most impressed by how the comic built up to the dramatic death of the issue in such a steady manner - it was as if watching someone calming pulling out a gun, aiming it, and pulling the trigger and still being shocked at the violence that unfolds. With three issues left in the arc, some major shake-ups are about to occur and that's where Fables really tends to thrive. -- Christian Hoffer

DC #2

GREEN ARROW #3

Readers get some much-needed answers and clues regarding what's happened to Green Arrow. It's a lot to digest for longtime DC superfans, but the main story maintains its focus on the Green Arrow family. Luckily, there isn't a long wait between emotional reunions each issue, and there's no way to predict where the story will head next. -- Tim Adams

Rating: 5 out of 5

HARLEY QUINN #31

Harley Quinn #31, like the rest of this run, is just sort of weird and if the previous issue felt like it was losing the thread, this issue just confirms that the story might never have had one. The dialogue this time is solid, which might be the one good thing about it (other than the art) but nothing is very well executed in terms of story. We do finally get to see a smarter Harley, but it doesn't feel very believable because Harley is also simultaneously so infantilized, something that is further exacerbated with the weird dynamic they press on the Harley/Ivy relationship - which they once again seem to be splitting apart. This is very much all over the place and chaotic and while that is accurate to Harley as a character in broad strokes, this isn't really working in terms of larger storytelling. -- Nicole Drum

Rating: 2 out of 5

THE RIDDLER: YEAR ONE #5

This is an issue that is going to be a tough sell for some, but works well in conjunction with what we've seen from the issues before. AS opposed to being a linear, structured entry, The Riddler: Year One #5 feels like you're witnessing a mad man vomiting his ideas on the page... in a good way! It's a brilliant way to take readers into the troubled mind of the future Riddler, but it's also a story that might be hard for some readers to readily digest. It's borderline experimental and while I do appreciate the wide swing of this effort, it does feel like the weakest issue to date simply thanks to how it is presented. This issue is amazingly disturbing but it's one that definitely could be tough for traditional comic readers to connect with. -- Evan Valentine

Rating: 4 out of 5

TIM DRAKE: ROBIN #10

Tim Drake: Robin #10 wraps up pretty much everything in the series' short run, which is nice, and has managed to bring a little maturity to the series which its first halve deeply lacked. Unfortunately, while this issue wasn't bad and is indeed better than most of the early issues in terms of its pacing, it struggled with development. There was a lot in this issue and its wrap up that felt undercooked - not exactly rushed, just that what made it to page chose the lightest possible version that could have been resolved with just a better efficiency in detail choice. I think that, pulling back to look at this from a whole series approach rather than a single issue approach, that may be more indicative of how this series started than how this issue ended but the net result was the same - weak development, a little bit of losing the thread, and some unsatisfying moments thanks to some unanswered questions. There are also some issues of not great art, where some details felt like they were just missed. Overall, though, Fitzmartin brings the first half of the series together with the last and ties most things up well and that's an accomplishment. -- Nicole Drum

Rating: 3 out of 5

UNSTOPPABLE DOOM PATROL #4

With DC extending the number of issues in Unstoppable Doom Patrol's run, it allows the creative team to take a breather and have a character-focused issue. That's what we get with issue #4, as we sit in with the team's one-on-one sit-downs with a psychiatrist. We get quick rundowns on each character's long histories, as well as an origin story for newcomers Degenerate and Beast Girl. -- Tim Adams

Marvel #1

ALIEN #3

An improvement over the previous issue but this new Alien series is one that is only as interesting as the carnage that it can show readers. Writer Declan Shalvey has some fun characters at his disposal but the character types one expects from an Alien story, the company men and the grunts, are painfully stale with only the scientist family at its core having any depth to them. Artist Andrea Broccardo is given the task of showing a lot of explosions and surprisingly violent moments, which are some of their best work in the series to date. Special shout out to colorist Triona Farrell for bringing depth to the gory and fiery moments of action, but this is pretty par for the course Alien story. -- Spencer Perry

Rating: 3 out of 5

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #28

Doctor Octopus' current aesthetic leans heavily into his Silver Age origins as a pudgy man with rage issues uses mad science to seize control. But there's never any doubt that he's a bona fide threat, even if his new Ocktoids blur the line between evil and adorable. As Octopus carves his way through Spider-Man's world and reveals traps established across the past year of Amazing Spider-Man comics, artist Ed McGuinness proves himself to be a perfect pairing for the material. It's a delight to watch the Ocktoids work themselves through various configurations, showcasing this upgrade in action. That leaves plenty of space for the enormous personalities involved in this conflict, including Norman Osborn and J. Jonah Jameson, to rehash past grievances and show just how much they've also evolved over the past 10 years of comics. With so many classic characters arranged in a genuinely new fashion, Amazing Spider-Man #28 manages to summon the magic of classic 1970s Spider-Man action in a modern style. Wherever Doc Ock's plan may lead, readers will want to follow. -- Chase Magnett

AVENGERS BEYOND #4

I have no idea what is happening in this comic. I re-read this latest issue a number of times, and then went back and re-read the previous three comics and I'm still coming up with a blank as to why this series exists and what message it is trying to convey. The confusion continues with issue four as a band of Z-tier doppelgangers appear to challenge Earth's Mightiest Avengers, and the "humor" that is attempted to be conveyed through them is downright cringe-worthy. The dialogue simply doesn't work and the "Bootleg Avengers" are yet another example of story beats that simply do not work here. With only one issue left in this mini-series, I suppose we should all buckle in for the finale to begin in a completely unrelated place in following suit with what came before. Avengers Beyond simply doesn't justify its own existence and is a mini-series that you can easily avoid. -- Evan Valentine

CAPTAIN AMERICA: SYMBOL OF TRUTH #14

It appears we've hit the end of the road for Captain America: Symbol of Truth. With "Cold War" in the rearview mirror, we spend the majority of time with Sam Wilson outside of the red-white-and-blue costume and shield. After everything that's going on, it's nice to see that Joaquin Torres/Falcon's status hasn't been forgotten, even if we don't get a firm conclusion regarding his recent transformation. I will say I will miss this book, especially since there hasn't been an announcement regarding Sam headlining his own comic book. -- Tim Adams

Rating: 3 out of 5

CARNAGE REIGNS: OMEGA #1

Carnage Reigns: Omega performs the difficult work of tying together a crossover event between three distinct series and its own sweeping plot. The issue primarily consists of a team up between Miles Morales and Tony Stark with the two heroes explaining the final steps in their quest to defeat Cletus Kasady and his new tech-infused powers. Although there is some space carved out to resolve sub-plots--Red Goblin's unique contributions, the fate of Cletus' protege Kenneth, and rogue Iron Man suits--they're rushed in a few pages and fail to provide a satisfying end cap for some of 2023's most surprising characters and series. As a conclusion, this issue delivers on the action and provides what's necessary for those drawn in from Red Goblin or Carnage, but ultimately reads like a detour. Yet the stage setting that occurs as references are made to the Carnage now roving the multiverse, it's clear that this oddball collection of comics still has a long way to go. If "Carnage Reigns" is a detour on the journey, then this set of symbiote-infused series ought to remain a mainstay read for those who have discovered their surprisingly high bar of quality. -- Chase Magnett

Rating: 3 out of 5

DAREDEVIL & ECHO #2

So far, the Daredevil & Echo series feels much less interested in reuniting the two titular heroes and more focussed on their 19th century ancestors. Both groups are fighting a mysterious "Blind One," with Demogoblin hellbent on reviving the seemingly eldritch deity. The problem is that outside of a quick fight at the start of the issue the pair seem to bit too willing to just take the loss and trail the next victim. A much more interesting hero shows up at the end of the issue that might spark some life into issue #3, but this comic still feels somewhat lifeless. -- Connor Casey

DEADPOOL #8

After a relatively light-hearted first seven issue's, Alyssa Wong's Deadpool series takes an emotional turn with its eighth issue by finally reintroducing Wade's daughter Ellie to the picture. Well, sort of. The comic starts out with Wade trapped in a false reality set up by a trio of assassins. Wade's slow realization that he's being lied to doesn't quite hit the same levels as the classic Superman story "For the Man Who Has Everything" (i.e. the one where Black Mercy gets stuck on Superman) but it still packs a punch once Wade realizes Ellie is a fake as well. Between Princess getting kidnapped and the hints at Wade keeping his relationship alive with the real Ellie, this issue feels like the series is taking a turn for the better. -- Connor Casey

GHOST RIDER #15

Ghost Rider from Percy and Smith has been solid through and through; so much so, many would probably consider it one of the best stories featuring Ghost Rider told in years. Percy managed to lay down an incredible story through 14 issues before all punches were pulled for the title's biggest finale yet, and the end result is a disappointingly stale endcap to the Spirit of Vengeance's latest arc. -- Adam Barnhardt

PREDATOR #4

Ed Brisson's work on the Predator series continues to impress, delivering stories where the presence of the titular alien hunter is one that always surprises and isn't mandatory. Artist Netho Diaz has a remarkable task at hand in the issue, showcasing the extensive cast of characters in an alien craft while never making the setting seem repetitive or dull. Colorist Erick Arciniega elevates that work as well, adding depth to the Predator ship sequences, which often have different lighting schemes depending on context. The pieces are in place for a bloody final chapter, and there are still quite a few trophies up for the taking as we head to Predator #5. -- Spencer Perry

SHE-HULK #14

She-Hulk and Scoundrel have been matching wits and steps in a relationship with both romantic and professional (insofar as superhero is a profession) angles; both sides come to a head in She-Hulk #14. In this focused issue that primarily focuses on two distinct sequences, there's a set up with the Fantastic Four consulting Jen on her mysterious suitor and, finally, a confrontation between the two. The set up showcases Rowell's knack for writing the voices of the FF (including a fabulous lettering flourish), but it's the back half of this issue that will make She-Hulk #15 appointment reading next month. Both the romantic and dramatic tension present between She-Hulk and Scoundrel on the page are immediately evident and close up panels are used to increase that tension exquisitely. Many comics toy with a "will they-won't they" routine, but few have pulled it off with the same fun and flair as She-Hulk #14. -- Chase Magnett

SILK #2

The best part of Silk #1 was how it played with the dream narrative at its core, and though writer Emily KIm continues to explore it Silk #2 finds more time outside of the dream with mixed results. Not much is given to us by way of what's really going on, which makes this meandering journey feel a little slow at times. Artist IG Guara continues to do good work when inside of the dreams of Cindy Moon, harnessing cowboys and pirates this time around, but there's something missing when reality is the focus, which is a majority of this month's issue. At this point the potential for fun scenarios with Silk is still the reason to read, even if the series wants to move it along. -- Spencer Perry

SILVER SURFER: GHOST LIGHT #5

Ghost Light finally remembers what it initially promised in its opening issue with its final installment, focussing more on Toni, her brother and Al Harper rather than the comic bizarreness of The Stranger. Even though there's no real indication from the book if Harper will be a consistent presence going forward, it ends on a strong enough note to feel worthwhile. Call it a fun revival of classic Silver Surfer lore and very little else. -- Connor Casey

STAR WARS: DARTH VADER - BLACK, WHITE & RED #3

With not just its ongoing storyline but also two standalone stories, this third issue of Darth Vader - Black, White & Red continues to deliver the delightful and disturbing vengeance of the Sith Lord. All three chapters of this issue embrace the vibe of its predecessors, not just with Star Wars but falling in line with Marvel's other forays into its more brutal roster, tackling Vader with both violence and sophistication. The standout story in this issue is Daniel Warren Johnson's "Annihilated," as its messy and exaggerated art style makes for a fresh juxtaposition to the exacting terror of Vader. While the Sith Lord is known for largely having a grasp on his emotions, the book plays a bit more fast and loose with its art style to show that the intimidation of Vader can shatter the reality of his targets, while the story doesn't go into the full-blown surrealism of Peach Momoko's story in the debut issue. With only one more issue to go, the series looks to be one of the more consistent Star Wars miniseries in the franchise's recent history. -- Patrick Cavanaugh

STAR WARS: DOCTOR APHRA #33

Aphra and Luke's discovery of a Jedi Temple might prove to be something that they never could have anticipated, and potentially confirms their doom instead of their salvation. With the whole issue contained to the confines of this mysterious location, what really works about this chapter is seeing the dynamic between Aphra and Luke unfold, making the entire issue feel fresh compared to how many supporting characters we've seen Aphra bicker with in previous chapters. With other Star Wars comics, seeing characters merely bantering back and forth from start to finish is something that could grow tiresome, but our investment in this partnership only grew by the time we reached the final page. Still, there wasn't much narrative momentum to speak of, so had there been just slightly more narrative progression (outside of a potentially exciting final page), we would have been much more engaged and fulfilled by this issue, even if there wasn't anything that particularly fell flat. Hopefully the next issue can bounce back and give us a more thrilling next step in these characters' journey. -- Patrick Cavanaugh

STORM #2

Storm #2 proves that the ensemble cast, including the X-Men of the era, despite the book's title suggesting a solo story, was not an accident. The issue digs deeper into the conflicts and relationships surrounding Storm at a breakneck pace. At times, this means characters come off like one-note caricatures of themselves--Kitty a petulant child, Rogue a thoughtless bruiser, Wolverine a possessive and rage-fueled admirer--with even Storm seeming to be in an unusual hurry to bring this man she's known for about a day home to meet the found family. It even devolves into near farce toward the end, with Kitty donning a preposterous disguise to sneak out while grounded and into the high-class social event all her teammates will attend. There's a clever play on the idea of mutation, in a biological sense, underpinning everything. The line work valiantly attempts to affect the hard-lined art styles that defined much of 1980s X-Men comics, but the modern coloring doesn't play along. It all feels exaggerated, but it's still classic X-Men at its core. -- Jamie Lovett

THOR #35

The final chapter of the current Thor series arrives and attempts to settle the disrupted run and its ideas on some stable ground before The Immortal Thor arrives in August. Thor #35 is split between two timelines; in the past Thor reunites Leah with her father Loki in a reflective and melancholy sequence with finely detailed portrayals of past legends, while in the present a final battle resolves an ongoing conflict involving Doctor Doom and Hela in a much more rushed fashion. It's the storytelling and gestures to Nordic mythology that make the first half of the equation work well. Even if there's nothing terribly exciting about the proceedings, Thor's mature approach to events and carefully guarded words provide a grander sense of scope. Yet the current affairs make Thor's world seem small by comparison as treaties between villains are quickly resolved and massive dragons are dispatched off-panel in depictions that won't leave any lingering eyes. Thor #35 reflects the run it concludes well in that it never quite coheres, but offers some gems amidst a lot of messiness. -- Chase Magnett

WARLOCK: REBIRTH #3

Three issues in and this series is still as unsure of itself as when it started. Eve Warlock's arrival lacks weight and purpose. Adam is more of a fill-in protagonist than the clearly defined character he has been in the past. It's not that this is a bad comic - everyone is doing their part fairly well. It's just that nothing about Warlock: Rebirth is particularly memorable. The whole series is just floating around in the ether, desperate to be something but lacking any sort of vision as to what that thing might be. -- Charlie Ridgely

X-MEN: BEFORE THE FALL - HERALDS OF APOCALYPSE #1

For readers interested in "Fall of X" who may have forgotten or skipped much of "X of Swords," this prologue chapter provides a recap on the most significant elements of that past crossover event. While the issue contains a solid sense of humor, one well paced action sequence, and some stunning vistas of Amenth and Okkara, it is functionally a reminder of what came before accompanied by some hints as to what comes next. The initiating event of this issue, a visit by Clan Akkaba, was already seen by dedicated X-readers months ago. What Heralds of Apocalypse does best is frame this swath of lore and many characters largely missing for the past couple of years for what comes next. Even as a dedicated reader of the X-line, it framed the unique marriage between Apocalypse and Genesis in a fashion that makes their future confrontations all the more exciting. Unfortunately, their children lack the same attention and primarily stand about looking cool in the background of their own dialogue. This may not be necessary reading, but for those invested in the current and upcoming X-sagas, it sets the stage nicely. -- Chase Magnett

007: FOR KING AND COUNTRY #3

The tension keeps rising in the third issue of Dynamite's new James Bond series. We have 007 and Gwendolyn Gann running from the authorities, other agents out to get them, double-crosses, and more. THE 06 PROTOCOL #3

There are fundamental flaws of craft present throughout The 06 Protocol #3 that make it difficult to read to the issue's halfway point even if they become less egregious in the second half. Transitions both within and between sequences are difficult to discern and characters are so ill defined that they are often interchangeable. These two elements of potential confusion overlap and are significantly exacerbated by the quick, violent action and spycraft elements of the story. It would be impossible to recommend the comic based upon these flaws alone, but it's apparent that the narrative they obscure lacks many additional elements for it to be recommended upon. Characters are flat and humor is non-existent in an issue that bases its title and far too many jokes on the idea that hurting a clown is funny - maybe in a better comic. -- Chase Magnett

BLUE BOOK #5

Blue Book finally deviates a bit from the readily available information about the infamous Hill UFO case and tells a bit of a story, as we see the Hills grapple with unexpected fame when their story leaks to the press. There's a few additive parts to the comic that attempts to provide a little bit of closure to the Hills, especially after the husband's unexpected death, but it's honestly more of a coda than an actual attempt to conceptualize real life events into a story instead of a standard re-telling. The b-book at least explores something a little more weird (ectoplasmic phenomenon during seances, and their debunkings), although the narration and pacing is pretty rough. Honestly, Blue Book has mostly felt like a big whiff, despite the caliber of creators involved. -- Christian Hoffer

BRYNMORE #1

If readers were to read the synopsis of Brynmore, they'd head into this expecting monsters and horrors - two trademarks of Steve Niles. Only Niles' script doesn't include either item. Instead, Brynmore #1 is a 20-page exposition dump introducing comic fans to Mark Turner. Except there's little character work done when it comes to Mark and instead, readers are given trope after trope as the single dad relocates to the small town in an attempt to have a second go at life. While there's likely (hopefully?) more to the story, this introductory issue is about as flat as can be. -- Adam Barnhardt

CREED: THE NEXT ROUND #1

Creed: The Next Round takes the initiative from this spring's release of Creed III to leap ahead about one decade into the future lives of Adonis Creed and his family to tell the story of his daughter Amara's early boxing career. Readers familiar with the films will have no trouble connecting the dots between that film and 2023 with Adonis and Bianca focused on building their media empire and Amara in high school. Those readers will also recognize many familiar beats within the healthy, but tense family structure and "underdog" narrative served up to the protege of one of boxing's greatest champions. There is comfort to be found in a familiar story and the inclusion of BASL alongside a wide array of sports tropes is certainly pleasing, but it never provides much purpose for the story at hand. Amara is hardly defined beyond being her father's shadow, a metaphor that reads accurately for readers who are given little to differentiate her from a young Adonis. The training and fights featured in The Next Round #1 are competent, but provoke little excitement in their bloodless delivery of plot. Without the visceral excitement found in photography of well-trained athletes throwing their fists at impossibly quick speeds, the action here moves slowly by comparison. Creed: The Next Round introduces itself as a capably told sequel that lacks the punch found in its filmic predecessors. -- Chase Magnett

DARK SPACES: GOOD DEEDS #2

Dark Spaces: Good Deeds #2 keeps the Vertigo vibes established in the first issue but still hasn't firmly differentiated itself from other stories in the genre, ultimately repeating the same narrative bits. Cheyenne is not fitting in, Jean can't catch a break, and there's something ugly bubbling under the surface, ready to burst through this town's chipper fa?ade. The supernatural elements give extra teeth to those well-worn tropes but not enough to make the narrative feel fresh, and it all ends with a final page reveal that feels both cliched and out of nowhere. Most of the issue's layouts are dense, with tightly-framed panels, giving the story a claustrophobic feel. It also makes moments where a page goes big, such as the conclusion or an act of possibly imagined violence, more impactful. The figures bristle with kinetic energy thanks to some scratchy linework and attention to facial expressions. The coloring is practically on an arc of its own, going from the azure skies under the shining Florida sun to an umbral purple before descending into the darkness with the uncovering of the cursed roots of these events. It's a solid issue in a tightly-crafted mystery. -- Jamie Lovett

DARKWING DUCK #6

Darkwing Duck's Dynamite run has had its strengths, and its weaknesses, in the fact that it feels like episodes of the original series presented in a comic book with some new twists. Unfortunately, issue six throws a lot at readers, seemingly out of nowhere, when it comes to upping the stakes of Drake Mallard's latest adventure. While there are some interesting swerves here, the sixth issue buckles under the weight of the sheer amount of characters that are dropped into the battle. While it might be great for some fans to see some of these characters make a comeback, their introduction doesn't quite feel earned here and the issue suffers for it. -- Evan Valentine

THE EXPANSE: DRAGON TOOTH #3

The conspiracy at the center of The Expanse: Dragon Tooth deepens this month as the Rocinante's crew find themselves the subject of spycraft and Avararala draws upon former allies. There's still a sense that the story is laying the stage for a much larger conflict, but where that pacing often worked to the television series' benefit it feels drawn out with a month, rather than a week, to wait between new installments in comics. What's more is that while readers very familiar with secondary characters won't struggle to identify who's speaking, the artwork in Dragon Tooth #3 struggles to define many significant figures applying consistently fewer details. This also serves to make the settings all the less impressive as the lived-in, but austere shuttles and stations are left to largely exist as colored planes. All of these suggest a struggle in adaptation, but the core story remains enticing as political and military maneuvers uncover sufficient information to make the titular objects a mystery worth uncovering. -- Chase Magnett

The completion of Hellboy's history continues with the publication of Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: 1957 - Fearful Symmetry #1, a new one shot kicking off another cycle of stories. Set in a particular year far enough removed from Hellboy's conclusion so as not to upset anything, these comics end up ranging from somewhat necessary to pulpy, forgettable fun. HELL TO PAY #6

Hell To Pay brings "The Shrouded College" to a gripping and unexpected conclusion, and while it leaves it very much sets up the next chapter of the story, Charles Soule still delivers a satisfying finale to this first chapter. That ending features a number of intriguing twists, and while they do surprise, they also make all the sense in the world. The action sequences are thrilling and the book is always strongest when Will Sliney and Rachelle Rosenberg lean into the supernatural elements, which this issue has a bevy of. Hell to Pay has been a wild ride and at this point I'm quite invested in seeing how things play out from here, and Book 1 can't get here soon enough. -- Matthew Aguilar

INDIGO CHILDREN #4

The bit players in Indigo Children #4 sure are long-winded. Set in Kabul amid the American military's pullout from Afghanistan, the issue takes time to let a more solid deliver a monologue revealing how noble he is and heartbroken by the situation. Is the implication that this U.S. soldier is haunted by being forced to abandon the people he's spent years among meant to tee off the reveal of the Indigo Child living in the country with their ghostlike power? Otherwise, it's an entirely random bit of patriotic teeth-gnashing that serves no purpose. Neither interpretation works well. The issue also gives our journalistic protagonist an origin story but is otherwise pretty similar to past issues of the series: the assembled Indigo Children and their allies seek another of their kind, displaying little meaningful personality while being tracked by those who would do them ill. The artwork is a little looser in spots here, but it is unlikely to change anyone's mind about the series, which continues to be a dry and unmemorable read. -- Jamie Lovett

LOCAL MAN #5

Local Man consistently manages to be nothing short of incredible, crafting a reverential but biting take on the ins and outs of 90s superhero storytelling. The narrative Tim Seeley and Tony Fleecs craft is an effortless spiral of wit and action, delivering some emotional gut punches in both the main and backup story. MASKERADE #6

Most of Maskerade #6 consists of exposition dumps in which character's voices fill narrative captions over related illustrations. It's the sort of concept that can easily be excused for its efficiency in a single page, even a few, but when filling an entire issue it's a tedious use of the comics form. That's especially true when readers lack much motivation to care about these back stories given the two-dimensional characters provided with quips in place of depth. There's not much joy to be found in a conspiracy filled with clich?s either leaving the artwork of Maskerade to provide any point of interest in this series. Yet serviceable pages are sometimes replaced by ones in which faces and forms are difficult to discern, and where this might capably convey an interesting story, here it is left to drag out one that bores on almost every page in spite of its sensationalized fare. -- Chase Magnett

THE NEIGHBORS #4

The Neighbors #4 reveals further layers of a family's new setting as they go on their separate journeys to discovering exactly what The Neighbors are. This results in some tremendous panels and sequences blurring the line of what characters perceive as real and delivering unsettling imagery to readers. However, the transitions between different experiences and perspectives are not always clear and, given the dreamlike nature of many pages, it can be difficult for readers to discern what exactly has changed when the page turns. That disorientation is amplified by the still mysterious nature of the series' supernatural antagonist in a story that doesn't feel well suited to serialization in this stretch. -- Chase Magnett

NOSTALGIA #3

Nostalgia #2 was lacking some of the father son dynamic that made the Nostalgia #1 so compelling, and thankfully that is back in full force with Nostalgia #3, and even with an added element of intrigue to boot. Writer Scott Hoffman picks up things right from the start, and quickly shifts focus to Craig and Nathan's evolving relationship and then keeps that front and center for the entirety of the issue. Hoffman still works in flashbacks that reveal more of Craig's past, but it's woven into the ongoing story of Nathan and Craig's current adventures, allowing the story's momentum to continue without grinding to a halt. Artist Daniel Zezelj and colorist Lee Loughridge are able to give each location its own vibe and aura, and their canvas greatly expands thanks to a trip to an unexpected trip to space. The additional conflicts that emerge from that trip have changed the tone of the story without moving away from Craig and Nathan's dynamic, and hopefully that will only continue to be the case in Nostalgia #4. -- Matthew Aguilar

THE ODDLY PEDESTRIAN LIFE OF CHRISTOPHER CHAOS #1

Individual sequences and the entire aesthetic of The Oddly Pedestrian Life of Christopher Chaos possess a clear charm--a modern gothic with bombastic appeal framed around an innocent queer youth--but the concept never coheres in the series' first issue leaving readers to wonder what exactly the pitch is. There are layers of introduction as a classroom monologue leads into a seemingly more "real" world, but every few pages there are clear signs that Christopher's life is anything but realistic. However, the constant refusal by other characters to notice the strange combined with undeniably bizarre happenings (e.g. a shoot out between ghostly men and a werewolf) leads one to question what exactly is happening in this story. Whether readers are looking at an unreliable narrator, metaphor, or another answer altogether, it's not clear in The Oddly Pedestrian Life of Christopher Chaos #1. POWER RANGERS UNLIMITED: THE COINLESS #1

Power Rangers Unlimited: The Coinless is pretty much a must read for longtime comics fans, as not only do you get the new status quo of a much beloved world, but Lord Dragon's new team seems to be primed to have a much bigger role in the main books. While it does seem important, it's also just a supremely fun read, and writer Adam Cesare utilizes Drakkon and the rest of the main cast brilliantly. Trini and especially Divatox are fantastic, and the personality contrasts and conflicts with Drakkon and Kiya yield hilarious results. Artist Moises Hidalgo, colorist Arthur Hesli, and letterer Ed Dukeshire are also at the top of their game, including a marvelous Dark Specter spotlight. The battles are full of the witty banter and big action Ranger fans are accustomed to, and several moments will hit fans right in the feels. THE SAVAGE STRENGTH OF STARSTORM #2

In the debut of The Savage Strength of Starstorm, readers were introduced to a mysterious teenager who gains tremendous, interstellar powers after making new friends and seeing their high school annihilated by an alien invader. The second issue opts largely to ignore all of that--summarizing most of the outcomes in a few lines of prologue text--and instead focus on a brand new student bound up in conspiracies involving the mafia and superheroes, none of which were present in issue #1. The series' plotting reads like a brainstorming session with new ideas being introduced every few pages in a never-ending series of "and then." Grant Garrison, the ostensible hero, drops into the background where he primarily asks questions about new characters or follows them on entirely disconnected paths. Combine that with the stiffest dialogue seen in superhero comics since the Silver Age and characters who, across the board, seem to possess only a single facial expression, and there simply seems to be no meritable facet to keep readers hooked. The frantic introduction of more than a half-dozen new characters, ninja assassin training, superhero squads straight out of 90s Image Comics, and even zombies builds toward nothing. Instead, they are thrown on the page like a heap of comic book tropes with no concept as to how they might cohere. Even the occasionally impressive layouts found in issue #1 are absent in pages so dense with unnecessary information they present no opportunity to admire what is original in Craig's artwork. After two issues, it's difficult to state what exactly The Savage Strength of Starstorm is about or why readers ought to take a chance on it. -- Chase Magnett

SPACE JOB #4

Space Job ends with some legitimate laughs. The issue offers its take on the classic Star Trek: II: The Wrath of Khan scene in which Spock's corpse is shot out of the Enterprise inside a torpedo with predictably hilarious hijinks ensue, including a galaxy's worst eulogy. The visuals continue to emulate approximate those of a workplace television comedy, emphasizing the pettiness of the conflicts and the inanity of each character's goal. Even Travis -- the clear-headed, too-competent-for-this-place "Jim" of the crew -- can't seem to break out of the ship's orbit, pulled back in by his remaining interest in the "Pam" of the group. Whether the creative team keeps that will they, won't they situation up in the air out of a desire to subvert expectations or for wanting to continue the story in subsequent series, as the final page may or may not allude to, is unclear. It works either way. If the sequels are the goal, there are enough unresolved plot threads to justify another outer with the Bush crew, who have yet to wear out their welcome. STAR WARS: THE HIGH REPUBLIC ADVENTURES #7

Any Star Wars story that doesn't focus on established figures struggles with finding its own voice in a way that channels the spirit of the galaxy far, far away without having to rely on merely delivering connections to those established events. These restrictions are all the more challenging with not just a story set during The High Republic, but also one that is geared towards younger readers. Luckily, The High Republic Adventures continues to raise itself to the task, as the series continues to not only be whimsical and accessibly enough to draw in younger readers without being bogged down by decades of mythology, but also by depicting struggles that readers themselves might be facing while avoiding talking down to them. Sav Malag?n continues to be pulled between what she wants to be, what she's told she must be, and everything in between. STAR WARS: THE HIGH REPUBLIC ADVENTURES #8

The High Republic Adventures #8 wraps up this story of pirates and padawans in an undeniably cute climax well suited to young readers of Star Wars lore. Even as character's carefully lay out their decision making and evolution, it's grounded in distinct voices and displays of humor. This tactic also serves to approach nearly every character in the story with a strong sense of sympathy; there's only one true villain to be found while everyone else is allowed to grow. That this growth can be seen in small encounters and dedications not requiring galactic threats makes it easier to appreciate. A small lightsaber duel near the end is as effective as anything in Marvel Comics' current line. Although it's fair to refer to The High Republic Adventures as sleight, it arrives at its end competently and with a splash of style that ought to please young readers and provide older ones with enough to enjoy. -- Chase Magnett

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: THE LAST RONIN - THE LOST YEARS #4

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin - The Lost Years #4 continues to struggle with the same problems as the previous installments. Opening each issue with multiple flashbacks remains jarring, and the dialogue, which has a Bronze Age charm, may not appeal to those unfamiliar with that era of comics or the "modern" era that followed, birthing the Turtles. Certain scenes also suffer from shadows making the close-framed characters hard to distinguish. There's still a solid, if familiar, story here as Mikey gets pulled into the familiar gladiator trope, the latest in a series of digressions from his inevitable showdown with Death Worm, which is a journey that may have gone on a bit longer than it should have been allowed. Still, the artwork is stellar, shifting slightly in style depending on the era depicted, and even a single page of Kevin Eastman pencils is a treat. TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES/USAGI YOJIMBO: WHEREWHEN #4

It's hard to say enough about how gorgeous and gratifying Stan Sakai's cartooning in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Usagi Yojimbo: WhereWhen has been, and he ups the game in this fourth installment. The story provides ample opportunity for Sakai to show his skill at depicting fluid combat and then ups the ante with an invigorating sequence of the Turtles and Usagi going up against a mechanical dragon bursting with dynamic menace. Sakai also shows his versatility in drawing landscapes, alternating from the idyllic Japanese countryside to the inner woods, giving a textured darkness through Sakai's detailed hatching. One shouldn't overlook the contributions of Hi-Fi Design's colors, which give the book a cohesive, subtle, and earthy look for the sheen of WhereWhen's mechanical monstrosities to disrupt. While this book is primarily about adventure and the simple fun of a TMNT and Usagi team-up, there are still emotional moments as Gen reels from the loss of Kitsune and Noriyuki's advisors call his leadership into question. Sakai shows he's as capable of bringing out emotion from his characters as he is at choreographing their sword strikes. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Usagi Yojimbo: WhereWhen #4 may be the best issue yet of a brilliant action/adventure comic. - Jamie Lovett

VAMPIRELLA VS. THE SUPERPOWERS #2

The mystery behind Projection 1948 deepens this issue as a new actor is revealed and various agents encounter one another in the wake of the debut's action. Much of what occurs on the page consists of recaps on this alternate Earth's status quo with some new additions being made. The expository dialogue makes the text pages--already dry and repetitive--easy to bypass as the search for antagonists and action drives the story. Even as the mastermind threatens to reveal themself too early, there's enough occurring about Vampirella as she is both investigated and seeks to go undercover to keep readers attentive. Bland sequences filled with men in suits sighted at odd angles and some repeated figures in the artwork promise to grow more interesting with action just around the corner. Until the next issue arrives though, Vampirella vs. The Superpowers reads like it's stalling for time. -- Chase Magnett

VANISH #8

Vanish has been one of the most emotionally taxing stories in recent memory for me, as you can't help but root for Oliver to get his life back, and the finale in Vanish #8 may be the hardest hitting issue to date. Donny Cates, Ryan Stegman, V Ken Marion, and Sonia Oback deliver a visceral and heart wrenching finale, but at every point you're completely immersed and on the edge of your seat. That makes the blowback of the ending that much more severe, and while I get the themes and the element of surprise, I can't help but think a happier ending would've resonated far more with me personally. It's a kick to the gut, and yet that's also in keeping with a variety of themes in Vanish as a series. It's part of what has made this series so impactful, and so it does feel in a way fitting that the ending would follow suit. That ending took the wind out of my sails, but it's one that I will be thinking of for quite some time, so in that aspect it was a complete success. -- Matthew Aguilar

W0RLDTR33 #3

W0RLDTR33 remains the horror comic to watch this year as Tynion and Blanco juggle a number of interesting plots surrounding a terrifying cybernetic virus. We get a good look at the Undernet this time around and it might raise more questions, but instills more creepiness into the story as a result of its apperance. As I've mentioned in my previous reviews for W0RLDTR33, horror in a comic book format is exceptionally difficult, but you could hardly tell that with this latest offering from Image Comics. If you're a horror fan, this is the book to watch. -- Evan Valentine

Ghost Rider #15 Review: A Rushed Conclusion to the Best Ghost Rider Story in Years https://comicbook.com/comics/news/ghost-rider-15-review-marvel-comics-rushed-conclusion/ Wed, 28 Jun 2023 14:00:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt c54f3cb6-1237-448c-b65c-e6c8582ef516 A year and some change ago, Benjamin Percy and Cory Smith launched their own Ghost Rider series, a surprisingly dark take on the Spirit of Vengeance - even by Johnny Blaze's standards. The story laid out through 14 blood-pumping issues comes to a head in Ghost Rider #15 and while the stage was set for a grand finale of sorts, the plot is quick to fizzle out.

Stories featuring Ghost Rider typically go one of two ways: dark, gritty street-level tales or full-on, King of Hell supernatural stories. The arc so far has been a nice blend of both of those ideas, even introducing a technological aspect over the past several issues. It's been a breath of fresh air, and an artist like Smith and his metal-influenced line art have flourished throughout the entire run.

Only here, Ghost Rider #15 doesn't bother pumping the brakes. Instead, Percy's script slams the brake to the pavement, knocking the winds out of readers' lungs by drawing things to a close far too quickly. Though he took his time introducing the story's big bad in Infernal Labs and Dr. Diyu, both were easily defeated without even the slightest interaction from the eponymous anti-hero. Infernal Labs goes up in flames while Diyu walks to Hell only to seemingly get murdered by the brother she was there to save.

So much happens so fast, it all feels incredibly hollow when it would have benefited from time to breathe. No characters moments were had between Blaze and Danny Ketch, and the protagonists didn't even cross paths with their primary antagonists. Instead, it was as if Percy was instructed to get from Point A to Point B as quickly as possible so as to avoid any further paper usage on this otherwise spectacular story.

All in all, Ghost Rider from Percy and Smith has been solid through and through; so much so, many would probably consider it one of the best stories featuring Ghost Rider told in years. Percy managed to lay down an incredible story through 14 issues before all punches were pulled for the title's biggest finale yet, and the end result is a disappointingly stale endcap to the Spirit of Vengeance's latest arc.

Venom 3 Starts Production, Spider-Man: No Way Home Connection Spotted https://comicbook.com/movies/news/venom-3-filming-spider-man-connection-confirmed/ Tue, 27 Jun 2023 20:40:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt 836f31ee-48d6-4a89-ac6b-2f73780fbb6b

Principal photography on Venom 3 is officially underway. Tuesday, a video surfaced showing Tom Hardy on the set of the Sony threequel. In the clip making its rounds online, Hardy's Eddie Brock can be seen donning the same clothing the character wore in the post-credits scene of Spider-Man: No Way Home, suggesting the film picks up just moments after that moment.

The character was teleported to the Marvel Cinematic Universe during the post-credits scene of Venom: Let There Be Carnage, with the Venom symbiote seeing a TV report featuring a clip of Tom Holland's Spider-Man. Fast forward to No Way Home, and Hardy's Brock can be seen at a bar talking about Iron Man, The Hulk, and others before he's seemingly teleported back to Sony's Spider-Man Universe.

When it comes to Venom 3, Kelly Marcel is stepping into the director's chair after having written the scripts for the past two features in the franchise. Marcel wrote the script for the yet-to-be-named threequel alongside Hardy, who also serves as a producer.

"These things [usually] come in threes," Hardy previously said of the feature in an interview with Digital Spy.

Marcel is taking over for Andy Serkis, who helmed Venom: Let There Be Carnage. When we spoke with the filmmaker last year, he said she and Hardy had a good idea for the film.

"I think there's so much potential in the Venomverse for really interesting journeys before the kind of the inevitable happens... I think Kelly and Tom have been thinking about what is the next stage of the journey anyway," Serkis told ComicBook.com's Phase Zero podcast regarding the future of the franchise. "They would have thought of... They would have had some plans for where they could possibly go after this... You've got to. When you're going into a franchise, you've got to think about the arc, of course. You can't think about them just individually."

Venom 3 has yet to set an exact release date. Venom is streaming on Disney+ while Venom: Let There Be Carnage can be purchased wherever movies are sold.

Watch Daredevil Star Charlie Cox Play Marvel-Themed Heads Up Game (Exclusive) https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/daredevil-charlie-cox-heads-up-fun-interview-video/ Tue, 27 Jun 2023 18:32:00 +0000 Brandon Davis 457869a3-3903-411f-943f-eb6677df3718

Daredevil star Charlie Cox knows a thing or two about the Marvel universe. The actor made an appearance at ICCCon in Nashville in late May where participated in a panel hosted by ComicBook.com and Phase Zero. Afterwards, Cox joined Phase Zero's channel for a couple rounds of Heads Up, with the first round now being published. For those unfamiliar, Heads Up is a game where words or names are shown on a player's forehead while the other provides clues about what the word is without saying it. The goal is for the pair of players to have as many words guessed as possible in one minute. Cox does quite well at the game.

For an added twist, the round of Heads Up features only Marvel characters. Ranging from Loki to Silver Surfer or even Daredevil just for Cox to have some fun with, the cards playfully quiz the knowledge of the players. With Phase Zero host Brandon Davis, Cox starts out hot on his guesses before getting thrown off by a Guardians of the Galaxy character. The video has been published to the Phase Zero channel on YouTube, with Part 2 where the roles of describing and guessing are reversed coming soon.

Check out the video below! Subscribe to the Phase Zero channel for more fun Marvel content.

Cox first portrayed Daredevil for the Netflix series titled around Marvel's man without fear. He has since reprised the role in Spider-Man: No Way Home and She-Hulk. Soon, the actor will appear in Daredevil: Born Again on Disney+, despite production recently having been shut down temporarily.

Daredevil: Born Again brings back Charlie Cox, and Vincent D'Onofrio as Daredevil and Kingpin, with Arty Froushan playing Kingpin's associate, Harry. The supporting cast includes Sandrine Holt (The Crossing) as the MCU Vanessa Fisk and Jon Bernthal, returning as Frank Castle/The Punisher from Netflix's Daredevil and Marvel's The Punisher. Rounding out the cast are Michael Gandolfini (The Many Saints of Newark), Margarita Levieva (The Deuce), Nikki M. James (Severance), and Michael Gaston (Prison Break) in undisclosed roles. Series directors include Micahel Cuesta (Dexter, Blue Bloods), Clark Johnson (Homicide: Life on the Street), and Jeffrey Nachmanoff (The Day After Tomorrow). Grainne Godfree and Jill Blankenship are writing the series, alongside Aisha Porter-Christie, David Feige, Devon Kliger, Thomas Wong, and Zachary Reiter.

DIRECTOR'S COMMENTARY

  1. Watch the film with audio commentary by director James Gunn.

In his ComicBook.com review, Patrick Cavanaugh gave Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 a 4 out of 5 score, calling it a "cathartic MCU swan song":

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is the culmination of everything James Gunn has been building toward with these characters, warts and all. The adventure is the most abjectly emotional, as it goes for the jugular with not only Rocket's story, but the destination that many other characters arrive at, while the filmmaker also manages to put his mark on a studio known for regurgitating formulaic adventures packed with overwhelming sameness."

Synopsis: "In Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, our beloved band of misfits is looking a bit different these days. Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), still reeling from a terrible loss, must rally his team and embark on a dicey, action-packed mission to defend the universe and protect Rocket. Meanwhile, a new, unpredictable force threatens to bring the Guardians down for good. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is written and directed by James Gunn."

Secret Invasion Star Confirms Major Change to Captain Marvel https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/secret-invasion-samuel-l-jackson-confirms-big-captain-marvel-changes/ Tue, 27 Jun 2023 03:20:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt a7c16a96-35bc-4c5a-a331-387620463e55

In a post-Avengers: Endgame world, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has started changing drastically. Gone are the days when the likes of Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) were mainstays within the franchise. Now, some 15 years after the franchise was first introduced, an entirely new slate of superheroes is serving as the foundation of the property. Amongst those heroes is Brie Larson's Captain Marvel, who's already undergoing a major change.

Though she debuted in a self-titled solo film in 2019, Marvel Studios opted to removed the Captain Marvel branding from the franchise beginning with its sequel The Marvels. According to Secret Invasion lead Samuel L. Jackson, that's because the MCU no longer has just one Captain Marvel--it now has three.

"After Secret Invasion, I'm moving on to The Marvels, where you got like three different people who are Captain Marvel. You got Brie [Larson], you got a black Captain Marvel, and you got a Muslim Captain Marvel," Jackson said on a recent episode of Sway's Universe (via The Direct). "So, they're working on the universe in a way that's inclusive. Even like Shang-Chi and all those things that happen there. And... who the hell is Bad Bunny gonna be? Like, Bad Bunny's in the Marvel universe. Who that? What he gonna be?"

Joining Larson in The Marvels is Teyonah Parris, who plays Monica Rambeau within the MCU, and Iman Vellani, the beloved actor behind Marvel's live-action Kamala Khan. New additions to the project include Zawe Ashton, the film's Kree villain named Dar-Benn, and Park Seo-joon, whose role has yet to be revealed. Other additions include Shamier Anderson, Abraham Popoola, Caroline Simonnet, and Jessica Zhou.

The MCU's top superspy Nick Fury is back in Secret Invasion, the limited series having premiered June 21st on Disney+.

Spider-Man's Sidekick Spider-Boy Gets His Own Marvel Series https://comicbook.com/comics/news/spider-man-sidekick-spider-boy-marvel-series-dan-slott-paco-medina/ Mon, 26 Jun 2023 20:26:00 +0000 Timothy Adams 2a84bd53-6a14-4303-81f1-752006d4cddd

Spider-Boy, the secret missing sidekick of The Amazing Spider-Man, is set to star in a new ongoing series. The finale of "The End of the Spider-Verse" arc in Dan Slott and Mark Bagley's Spider-Man comic introduced readers to the young Spider-Boy, a teenage hero who claimed to be the webhead's sidekick. However, Peter Parker had no recollection of him ever existing. Some of Spider-Boy's secrets were peeled back in Edge of Spider-Verse #3, but Marvel will continue his adventures in a solo series from Spider-Boy's co-creator Dan Slott and artist Paco Medina, with covers by Spider-Boy co-creator Humberto Ramos.

Spider-Boy #1 will see Marvel dive headfirst into the hero's untold past, which includes the introduction of his arch-nemesis, Madame Monstrosity. It's not surprising to see Marvel give Spider-Boy his own headlining book. With the recent success of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Marvel having multiple titles under its Spider-Man Family featuring Silk, Spider-Woman, Miles Morales, and Ghost-Spider, one more won't hurt. Plus, it allows Dan Slott to continue building Spider-Boy up so he won't be quickly forgotten like Alpha.

Spider-Boy Creative Team Talks About the Spider-Man Sidekick's Solo Series

"Spider-Man isn't supposed to have a sidekick. That's just wrong on so many levels. And that is exactly why we are going to have so much fun with this," Slott explained. "Both this character-- and this new title-- are going to break all the rules. Bailey Briggs is going to have over-the-top adventures in the Spider-Man corner of the Marvel Universe. He'll be facing off against a mix of both all-new villains and fan-favorite Spidey bad guys. The one thing we can promise you, whenever you pick up a copy of SPIDER-BOY, we are going to take the weirdest and wildest swings with every single story! Our goal is to get every reader to ask two questions: 'What in the hell did I just read?!' and 'When is the NEXT one coming out?!'"

"When I found out that I was taking charge of Spider-Boy, I was GREATLY excited because of the possibilities of the character," Medina said. "Aesthetically, there's so much to do with him. Every character gets their action poses to be their personal signature. This time I'm working on something cool and specific for Spider-Boy, something that gives him a light of his own. On the other hand, I'll be working with Dan which is fantastic. His limitless imagery is what such a fresh character needs, it just makes me think of all the things we can do together and what I can bring to the table."

Spider-Boy #1 goes on sale November 1st.

Secret Invasion Star Cobie Smulders Reportedly Returning for The Marvels https://comicbook.com/movies/news/secret-invasion-star-cobie-smulders-returning-the-marvels/ Mon, 26 Jun 2023 19:51:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson b282529a-e1af-45dc-abe6-8bb4f5085aae

Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is now underway, and its movies and crop of Disney+ television shows are continuing to surprise fans. The next film on the docket for the franchise is set to be The Marvels -- and according to a new report, the film will feature the return of a surprising character. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cobie Smulders will be reprising her role as Maria Hill in The Marvels. Spoilers for the first episode of Secret Invasion below! Only look if you want to know! This report is especially interesting considering the recently-aired premiere episode of Marvel's Secret Invasion, which ended with Hill dying onscreen in an attack from Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir). Smulders has been playing Hill since the early days of the MCU, appearing as the character in The Avengers, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Spider-Man: Far From Home.

If Smulders is in fact in The Marvels, that could possibly hint that her Secret Invasion death is a fakeout, or the film is set beforehand in the timeline. Given recent comments that Smulders made, it might be the latter option. "I'm pretty sure this is it... It felt and it feels strange," Smulders recently told Vanity Fair of Hill's death. "Maria Hill's passing is very real, and it's shocking, and it feels very human."

What Is The Marvels About?

In Marvel Studios' The Marvels, Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol's estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up to learn to work in concert to save the universe as 'The Marvels.'

"The first one was the origin story of who [Carol] is," Larson said in an interview earlier this year. "Now it's digging into some of the complexities. That there is much more to her than that, that there are parts that are not so great about her. That we can see a hero as being a person that doesn't make every right decision all the time."

Are you excited for The Marvels? What do you think of Maria Hill possibly returning? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below!

The Marvels will debut exclusively in theaters on November 10th. Secret Invasion, meanwhile, debuts new episodes Wednesday exclusively on Disney+.

If you haven't signed up for Disney+ yet, you can try it out here. Note: If you purchase one of the awesome, independently chosen products featured here, we may earn a small commission from the retailer. Thank you for your support.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 Releases First Song From Soundtrack https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/spider-man-2-ps5-playstation-soundtrack-song/ Mon, 26 Jun 2023 15:17:00 +0000 Logan Moore cc388a96-4a66-446d-ae16-409a782f6618

PlayStation and developer Insomniac Games have today released the first song from the upcoming soundtrack for Marvel's Spider-Man 2. Perhaps one of the most understated things about the original Marvel's Spider-Man and its Miles Morales spin-off was each game's score, which were both composed by John Paesano. Now, with Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Paesano is returning to work on the PlayStation 5 sequel's music once again and has now given fans a taste of what it will have in store.

As of today, the first song, titled "Greater Together", from the Marvel's Spider-Man 2 soundtrack has gone live across streaming platforms. Much like the title of this track suggests, the song incorporates themes and elements that were heard in both Marvel's Spider-Man and Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, primarily since both Spider-Men are now playable characters in the sequel. The end of the song becomes much darker after its vibrant opening minutes, though, which alludes to the darker themes that will be present in Spider-Man 2.

You can listen to this new track from Marvel's Spider-Man 2 for yourself in the video below:

In recent weeks, PlayStation has started promoting Spider-Man 2 far more heavily as the game is starting to near its launch window. Not only have we seen new trailers and gameplay footage, but pre-orders for all versions of the game have since gone live at various retailers. Given that this new song has now dropped on streaming platforms, it seems clear that PlayStation is planning to keep revealing new elements of Spider-Man 2 at a frequent cadence prior to its arrival.

After first being announced all the way back in 2021, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 now has an official release date and will come to PS5 on October 20, 2023. Be sure to stay tuned to our continuing coverage here on ComicBook.com until that time to stay updated on the game's development.

How do you feel about Marvel's Spider-Man 2 based on everything we've seen so far? And what do you think of this song that has today been unveiled? Let me know either down in the comments or reach out to me on social media at @MooreMan12.

Guardians of the Galaxy's Austin Freeman Details Collaborative Process With Sean Gunn (Exclusive) https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/guardians-of-the-galaxy-austin-freeman-collaborative-process-sean-gunn-exclusive/ Mon, 26 Jun 2023 14:34:00 +0000 Liam Crowley cf1fb9a4-0644-41ec-8ec5-d2828cc7fff3

It takes a village to bring a Marvel Studios production to life, but the same can be said for just one individual character. Guardians of the Galaxy is made up of two completely computer-generated heroes in the forms of Rocket Raccoon and Groot. Unlike their MCU CGI counterparts like Mark Ruffalo's Hulk and Josh Brolin's Thanos, the actors tasked with voicing these characters are not the same actors that are providing motion-capture on set. Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel lend their chords to Rocket and Groot, but it is Sean Gunn and Austin Freeman that provide the physical embodiments of the fan-favorite pairing.

Sean had being doing on-set motion-capture for Rocket since the character was introduced in 2014 while Austin's first experience as Groot came in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special ahead of his reprisal in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Speaking to ComicBook.com, Austin detailed his collaborative process with Sean.

"I got to work with Sean a lot. We shot Guardians 3 over about seven months. I think it was late October, early November when they started some of the blue screen stuff with Rocket and Lylla and Tefs and Floor. So they had some of that stuff going before very, very early November when principal photography started," Austin said. "I worked with Sean basically the whole time, and I got to ask him just some tips. 'Okay, you've been doing this since the beginning. What are some things that you do?'

"He was really open and was able to talk with me about just how the movement is captured into the performance. And he was there, he was doing all of the stuff for Rocket. There were some stand-in things that happened when he was playing Kraglin, but he was there doing everything."

Beyond the Rocket motion-capture, Sean fulfills the live-action role of Kraglin in the Guardians franchise. The latest film had him triple dip, as he also provided the voice of Young Rocket in flashback scenes.

"He has a great kind of, it's his voice, but it's almost like a blend of his voice and almost like an imitation of Bradley Cooper that he does too that's like Rocket's voice," Austin said of Sean's vocal work. "It was almost like we had Bradley on set too, which was kind of interesting. He was really cool. It was great to talk with the two when we were working together."

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is currently in theaters.
