SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers have officially announced plans to extend their current contract until July 12th, delaying a possible actors strike. The news was broken on late Friday night, with both parties confirming that the decision was made to allow bargaining to continue. Prior to this, the SAG-AFTRA contract was initially set to expire on Friday, June 30th at midnight PT, with many wondering if a strike would occur soon after. This decision mirrors what both parties did during 2014 and 2017 talks, in part to account for the Fourth of July holiday. In those previous instances, a new deal was reached between SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP by early July, but it is unclear at this point if that will happen this time around, especially as the Writers Guild of America has been on strike for several months now.

"The agreements, which were set to expire at 11:59 p.m. PT tonight, will now expire on July 12, at 11:59 pm PT," SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP said in a joint statement. "The parties will continue to negotiate under a mutually agreed upon media blackout. Neither organization will comment to the media about the negotiations during the extension."

Will the Actors Go on Strike?

Earlier this month, an open letter from more than 1,000 high-profile actors and SAG members was released, indicating that they are prepared to strike if the situation requires it. The actors on the letter include Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Amy Schumer, and even union president Fran Drescher.

"We want you to know that we would rather go on strike than compromise on these fundamental points, and we believe that, if we settle for a less than transformative deal, the future of our union and our craft will be undermined, and SAG-AFTRA will enter the next negotiation with drastically reduced leverage," the letter reads in part.

Who Is the President of SAG-AFTRA?

Drescher was elected the president of SAG-AFTRA in September of 2021. She recently went on to Good Morning America to provide an update about the negotiations.

"We do have unprecedented support from the union members where, if we feel like we're not making headway when the contract expires, which is June 30th at 11:59 p.m., we're gonna have to strike," Drescher said. "You know, in some areas we are, and in some areas we're not. So we just have to see. I mean, in earnest, it would be great if we can walk away with a deal that we want. And at the end of the day, you know, we're living in a time that's very different from the last few decades when the foundation of the contract was forged. It's the digital age now and the age of streaming, and it's a whole different business model. So it really begs that we stand firm and hold strong and do right by the members in this industry and honor the massive contribution that they make. So I'm really in it to win it on behalf of our 180,000 members. And we stand by the Writers Guild, too."

Nimona Directors Talk Designing the Film's Unique Medieval Future https://comicbook.com/movies/news/nimona-directors-movie-design-nd-stevenson-interview/ Sat, 01 Jul 2023 01:55:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson 8bd15fad-1ffa-44f5-9dd5-21616d85c385

Nimona is now available to stream on Netflix, taking viewers into a delightful and unexpected fantasy world. The film is based on ND Stevenson's beloved graphic novel of the same name, and not only does a fascinating job of honoring the source material, but builds upon it to create something new. While speaking to ComicBook.com about their work on Nimona, directors Nick Bruno and Troy Quane dove into the experience of finding the film's unique style, as well as their favorite in-universe posters and Easter eggs.

"Well, I mean, adaptation's adaptation," Quane explained. "What works on a flat piece of paper isn't going to work within the realm of filmmaking, but we wanted to make sure we harken back to that graphic novel. So we really did take a look at that, the style of what we were doing, just coming up with something unique that would stand out. It also kind of reflects the thematics of the movie. I mean, the movie takes place in a medieval future, which is the society that has moved forward with technology and has flying cars, but who's thinking is still very much rooted in an old-fashioned sort of sensibility. Unfortunately, a little like some aspects of our society today. That idea of making a movie in CGI, but giving it that nostalgic, sort of traditional throwback feel, it felt like it was a great nod to the graphic novel, but it also supported the thematic of what we were trying to say with the material."

"We really love all the horrible propaganda that's out there," Bruno revealed. "It was a thing that was fun to think about, and we were able to, unfortunately, pull from our own world. Like "Slaytorade", and "If you see something, slay something." There's unfortunately too many examples in our own world, of how we will judge people and hold them back. But it was, at the same time, fun to parody that."

What Is Nimona About?

In Nimona, when Ballister Boldheart (Riz Ahmed), a knight in a futuristic medieval world, is framed for a crime he didn't commit, the only one who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona (Chlo? Grace Moretz), a mischievous teen with a taste for mayhem -- who also happens to be a shapeshifting creature Ballister has been trained to destroy. But with the entire kingdom out to get him, Nimona's the best (or technically the only) sidekick Ballister can hope for. And as the lines between heroes, villains, and monsters start to blur, the two of them set out to wreak serious havoc -- for Ballister to clear his name once and for all, and for Nimona to...just wreak serious havoc. Nimona is directed by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane. The film also stars Eugene Lee Yang as Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin, Frances Conroy as The Director, and Beck Bennett as Sir Thoddeus Sureblade.

"I don't think it could be happening at a better time," Stevenson told ComicBook.com in a separate interview. "It truly is this story that has just gained meaning since the comic. And it does... A lot of things have fallen into place for me, clearly. But it's also a time in the world where it's just like we really need, I think that it asks people to have love and empathy, even if they don't fully understand. And I think that that's really, really needed right now in the world. Not only for people who identify in that way who are seeing themselves, but also for people who love someone who is trans or queer in some way and in some movie that just asks you to see people and listen. And I think we really need that right now."

Captain America's Anthony Mackie on Possible Actors Strike Effecting Avengers: The Kang Dynasty https://comicbook.com/movies/news/captain-america-anthony-mackie-actors-effecting-strike-avengers/ Sat, 01 Jul 2023 01:03:00 +0000 Nathaniel Brail 4fe9b188-f719-430e-8f30-d6d4a4998303

Everything in the film and television industry seems to be in a state of stasis, with the Writers Guild of America currently on strike and the Screen Actors Guild currently trying to negotiate a better contract to avoid going on strike. The SAG-AFTRA strike could be avoided, but it is becoming more and more likely that we could see both the WGA and SAG on strike at the same time. Marvel Studios has already been forced to halt production on a bunch of projects and cancel their appearance at San Diego Comic-Con's Hall H due to the ongoing WGA strike and possible SAG-AFTRA strike, and now it seems that one of their stars is now speaking out on what could happen with the next Avengers movie if the actors do indeed go on strike. While speaking with Inverse to promote his new series Twisted Metal, Anthony Mackie (Captain America: Brave New World) spoke about what could happen to Avengers: The Kang Dynasty if an agreement isn't reached between the studios and the actors.

"It's a sh*t show if we go on strike," Mackie continues by revealing that the only way forward is for the studios to come correct with a new deal. "They're going to have to. Unless they get a bunch of f*cking YouTubers to make Avengers 5!"

"Once the studios went public and were bought out by major companies, we were f*cked. It's no longer about art. It's no longer about interesting, fun work. It's about end-of-the-quarter profit sharing. It's about shareholders. So you're literally just raping and pillaging the industry. It's cannibalism." The Captain America: Brave New World star added.

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty Writer is Excited to Work With Actors on Film

Although it's been rumored that writer Jeff Loveness has exited his duties penning the script for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, he recently made an appearance on ComicBook.com's Phase Zero podcast and revealed to our very own Brandon Davis exactly which actors he's excited to work with on the film.

"I can't say specifically. I think I'd get in trouble. I gotta get better at talking to the internet. But, like, just characters that we like? I mean, I think we're excited for the actors more than even the characters right now because we've got a really good crop of performers. We've got Florence Pugh and Jonathan Majors and Letitia Wright. We've got such a deep bench of really good actors and I think everyone is going to get their chance to shine. I cant say who, but I think we've got a deep bench and it's fun to finally put everybody into the game."

Captain America: Brave New World is expected to arrive in theaters on August 26, 2024 and Avengers: The Kang Dynasty will hit theaters on May 1, 2026!

Warner Bros. Discovery and Mattel Celebrate Barbie Movie by Partnering With Save the Children https://comicbook.com/movies/news/warner-bros-discovery-and-mattel-celebrate-barbie-movie-by-partnering-with-save-the-children/ Sat, 01 Jul 2023 00:37:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame b4302e55-7f01-4405-965d-3426a136f47e

Warner Bros. Discovery is teaming with Save the Children in a new, global girls' empowerment initiative, themed to the release of director Greta Gerwig's Barbie, in theaters soon. According to a statement from Warner Bros. Discovery, the campaign will help girls around the world receive the learning resources and support they need to make their dreams a reality. Mattel, creator of the global icon Barbie and IP owner of the brand, has partnered with Save the Children for nearly two decades and launched the Barbie Dream Gap Project in 2018; they will partner with WBD on the new campaign.

Kicking off today, the campaign will receive global attention on WBD linear, digital, and social platforms. Initiatives include an in-show integration on HGTV's "Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge," consumer activations through brand partnerships, and a Charity Buzz auction that features tickets to the Los Angeles and London premieres of the movie "Barbie," among other exciting items. They also announced today that they planned to let contest winners stay in a real-life Malibu Barbie Dream House.

"Warner Bros. Discovery is a long-standing supporter of Save the Children, so we are tickled pink to tap into the movie 'Barbie' to inspire and nurture the limitless potential in young girls around the world," said Louise Soper, Senior Vice President, Global Brand Partnerships for Warner Bros. Pictures. "From astronaut, journalist, entrepreneur, and now movie star, Barbie's over 250 inspirational careers remind us that you can be whatever you want to be, and give back to your community too."

Barbie stars, including Margot Robbie, America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, and Will Ferrell, filmed a text-to-donate public service announcement that encourages viewers to text 'Barbie' to 707070 and join WBD in supporting the work of Save the Children. The PSAs will begin airing today on WBD platforms globally, from sports and streaming to cable and broadcast.

"Save the Children was established by a woman who believed she could accomplish things others didn't believe were possible. That legacy still guides us today as we work to see girls everywhere embrace their potential," said Luciana Bonifacio, Save the Children's Chief Development Officer. "This is why we are excited to partner with Warner Bros. Discovery, Mattel, and the movie Barbie to provide girls in the U.S. and around the world access to education and resources, encouraging them to believe in their own potential and achieve their dreams."

"As the original girl empowerment brand, we couldn't be more proud to join Warner Bros. Discovery during this exciting moment in Barbie's history to support Save the Children," said Lisa McKnight, Executive Vice President and Global Head of Barbie & Dolls, Mattel. "Barbie launched the Dream Gap Project with a global effort to level the playing field for girls, which cannot be done alone. Together, Mattel and Warner Bros. Discovery are partnering with Save the Children to help girls reach their full potential."

In the U.S., the partnership will support Save the Children's early education, summer and after school programming to ensure children and their families have the resources and support needed to reach their goals. Internationally, it will support Save the Children's girls' empowerment programming by providing services across education, health, justice and child protection sectors.

Nimona Cast and Crew Reveal Fan Reactions They're Most Excited For https://comicbook.com/movies/news/nimona-cast-crew-fan-reactions-netflix-interview/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 23:56:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson 99e81aab-246a-4e93-a667-05ac5bf2657c

After years of being in the works and a brief cancelation by Blue Sky, the film adaptation of Nimona is finally a reality. Nimona turns ND Stevenson's beloved graphic novel into a cinematic blockbuster, and now that the film has arrived on Netflix, there's definitely a lot to take in. ComicBook.com recently spoke to some of the cast and crew of Nimona, who shared what aspects of the film they're most excited to see audiences respond to.

"When I saw the film a few weeks ago, I brought my friends with me and we're all in our twenties," Chlo? Grace Moretz, who voices Nimona, explained. "I think what I love the most was seeing that each person gravitated to a different thing in the story, and Nimona touched their hearts in a different way with each person. I think the biggest thing that I love after watching this film is talking to people and having connections of why they gravitated to it and what it meant to them. Because there's not a lot of stories that it feels like each person has such a custom experience with it each and every time, and I think that's really rare and beautiful."

"I just can't wait for people to sit, to meet Nimona, and what Chloe has done with Nimona," Ballister Boldheart actor Riz Ahmed said. "It's just next level. We all know she's an amazing actor, but I just think this incredibly kind of sprightly, mischievous, hilarious character that she has brought to life. I honestly think is just kind of a classic personality, a classic character, and I just can't wait for people to meet her."

"I'm excited to see people's response to how careful and thoughtful the decisions were to make this script work as a film," Eugene Lee Yang, who voices Ambrosius Goldenloin, revealed. "And I hope and I know that a lot of the graphic novel fans will see the value in what story is being told on screen. And I really hope that anyone, regardless of age or background, enjoys it. But I really especially hope queer audiences get that this is a story for them and it's by them, and I think that's so awesome."

"I mean, well, first of all, I hope they have fun," co-director Troy Quane shared. "I hope they sit down and they have some popcorn or their treat of choice and enjoy the movie. I mean, we worked really hard to make it funny and big and exciting and action-packed, but at the end of the day, you do hope they walk away with the idea of just get a chance to know someone, get a chance to see them for who they really are. Whether you accept that or not is one thing, but at least give the opportunity to not pre-judge and just take a look at what's in front of you. And I think that would make a huge difference in the lives of so many people."

"Truthfully, I really want shape-shifters to be a bigger thing," Stevenson said with a laugh. "I love shape-shifters, I always have. Every time there's a shape-shifter, I just glom on real hard. So that's why this story exists. And I just truly want to see my nephew pretending to be a shape-shifter and turning into whales and gorillas and everything. I want more. Give me more. My little self who loved shape-shifters, I want to see more."

What Is Nimona About?

In Nimona, when Ballister Boldheart (Riz Ahmed), a knight in a futuristic medieval world, is framed for a crime he didn't commit, the only one who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona (Chlo? Jack Ryan May Have Just Teased John Krasinski's Return in Rainbow Six Movie https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/jack-ryan-season-4-john-krasinski-rainbow-six-movie/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 23:17:00 +0000 Cade Onder b76501ab-3941-4894-afaa-97245fa14617

Jack Ryan season 4 may be teasing John Krasinski's return to the role in the Rainbow Six movie. The Tom Clancy universe is a very, very rich one. The author is probably one of the most successful when it comes to how many times his work has been adapted not just in movies and TV, but also video games. Gaming publisher Ubisoft has the rights to use Tom Clancy's name on a bunch of video games that are loosely associated with him, including the Rainbow Six games which aren't even really based on the books any more and are just tactical PvP shooters.

With that said, the games have kept the author's IP very relevant as well as a number of live-action adaptations. Amazon's Jack Ryan series has been hugely successful and has paved the way for other Tom Clancy adaptations such as Without Remorse and in the future, Rainbow Six. With that said, Rainbow Six will continue the story of Without Remorse, but it's unclear if any of these exist within the same universe as the Jack Ryan TV series. They're all made, at least in part, with Paramount with the two released projects being on Amazon Prime. However, the first episode of Jack Ryan season 4 may be teasing something. Near the beginning of the episode, Jack Ryan is briefing the President on a situation and when asked a pretty heavy question, Ryan gives a vague non-answer. The President responds by joking that lines like that may lead to Ryan entering into a career in politics, which Ryan hates the idea of.

However, in the books, Jack Ryan is the President of the United States in Rainbow Six (shoutout Caleb Williams/@KnightGambit on Twitter for the info). It's possible this could be teasing that John Krasinski would reprise the role, likely briefly, for Rainbow Six as a way to continue that universe. Or it's just a fun nod to the books, we don't really know, but as the final season of the show rolls out on Amazon, we may get more hints to the future.

The Batman Part II: Director Matt Reeves Teases Return of Cinematographer Greig Fraser https://comicbook.com/dc/news/the-batman-part-ii-director-matt-reeves-cinematographer-greig-fraser/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 22:48:00 +0000 Spencer Perry b54b1408-734b-407b-9b30-b0c9373874c0

The Batman director Matt Reeves has seemingly confirmed that director of photography Greig Fraser will be back for The Batman Part II. Fresh off his Academy Award win for the first Dune movie, Reeves appeared to reveal that his collaborator will be back for the sequel in a new interview. Reeves and Fraser previously collaborated on Let Me In prior to The Batman, with the upcoming The Batman Part II marking their third movie together. Speaking on the Team Deakins podcast with another Academy Award-winning cinematographer, Roger Deakins, Reeves spoke openly about his working relationship with Fraser and appeared to indicate that his collaborator will return for The Batman Part II.

"I have had so many wonderful collaborators to work with and when you find someone who you love working with you just want to say like 'Come on, please let's let's just keep working together because this is such a... How would you how much farther can we push it?'" Reeves said. "I've been talking to Greg about (it), I'm trying to write the next movie now with my partner, we're doing this thing and he's like going, let's just push it farther." It's not entirely clear if Fraser is signed on for the sequel or if he and Reeves have simply had preliminary talks.

One person that is excited for Fraser's likely return, in addition to everyone else, is Roger Deakins himself. Earlier this year the two-time Oscar winner lamented that Fraser's work on The Batman wasn't nominated for Best Cinematoography at The Academy Awards, calling it the "best work" of the year. Deakins reiterated his love for The Batman on his podcast episode with Reeves, adding:

"I'm really glad you did Batman, because I've never been a fan of Batman, sorry, until your film. I've seen it probably three or four times. And I think it's it's very moving. I mean, I love it. I connect with the characters. I connect with what you're saying with it, which is what I want from a movie. It's great."

It was previously reported that The Batman Part II would begin filming before the end of 2023, aiming for a Fall start. As of this writing the sequel is is scheduled to open in theaters on October 3rd, 2025, but no official casting or details about the film have been revealed just yet.

The Flash: Ezra Miller Breaks Silence After Massachusetts Harassments Order Expires https://comicbook.com/movies/news/the-flash-ezra-miller-breaks-silence-massachusetts-harassments-order-expires/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 22:48:00 +0000 Nathaniel Brail 254d7807-76d6-40f9-a1df-8c9087baad62

The Flash's Ezra Miller is officially breaking their silence on a harassment order they received after it officially expired in the state of Massachusetts. The harassment order came after Shannon Guin alleged they behaved inappropriately with their non-binary child and harassed her family in a story from The Daily Beast last summer. No criminal charges were ever filed against Miller, and the actor's attorney, Marrissa Elkins, says that all interactions with the child were initiated by the mother. The reports also claimed that The Flash star was wielding a weapon, specifically a firearm, around the child, which was also denied by them and their attorney (via Deadline).

"The original order, pursued by Shannon Guin, on behalf of her minor child, was based on untrue allegations," Elkins revealed in a statement. "Frustratingly for Ezra, Guin lodged her false allegations at a time when Ezra was struggling with significant mental health issues, and was unable to come to court to defend themself against the spurious claims made by this individual. Had Ezra been able to appear in court last year and share the truth about their very limited interactions with Ms. Guin, I am confident the original order would have never been issued."

Miller also released a statement on the situation which you can read below:

I'm encouraged by today's outcome and very grateful at this moment to everyone who has stood beside me and sought to ensure that this egregious misuse of the protective order system was halted. Protective orders are meant to provide safety for individuals, families, and children who are in danger. They are not meant to be used as weapons by those seeking attention or fleeting tabloid fame or some sort of personal
vengeance when there are people in true and dire need of these services. I have been unjustly and directly targeted by an individual who the facts have shown has a history of such manipulative and destructive actions. I implore those members of the media who have recklessly spread false claims and failed to accurately report the truth and context of this story, to hold themselves to a higher standard and take the time to find the facts, rather than chasing the clicks. On a personal note, I want everyone to know that I am continuing to do my best to preserve my own wellness and what I can to reverse the collateral damage this ordeal has brought upon me and those close to me. Finally, to all you many beings in this world who have had the enormous courage to see me through it all and make it here with me - I will spend a long time trying to explain to you what it has meant to have your support. You have my undying gratitude, admiration, and love."

Due to all of their allegations, Miller's future has long been in doubt with no one at the studio giving a solid answer on whether or not the actor will continue on as The Flash. Newly appointed DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran stood behind the actor ahead of the release of The Flash but still couldn't give a solid answer on if they would return or not, leaving everything up in the air. Although, The Flash director Andy Muschietti did confirm that if he returned to helm a sequel, Miller would continue on as the Fastest Man Alive.

The Flash is in theaters now!

Nimona Creator ND Stevenson Says Film's Gender Expression Is More Timely Than Ever https://comicbook.com/movies/news/nimona-creator-nd-stevenson-movie-gender-expression-nonbinary-trans-interview/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 22:41:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson 6b39661d-f370-4de3-bf81-da7f0edb7f80

Nimona finally arrived on Netflix on Friday, after a long and complicated journey to be adapted. The animated film, which is inspired by ND Stevenson's graphic novel of the same name, was rescued by Netflix last year, after originally being greenlit and then canceled mid-production by the now Disney-owned Blue Sky Studios. With a near-decade from the Nimona graphic novel's creation to the film's debut, some of the story's elements, including LGBTQ+ romance and explorations of gender identity, have taken on a whole new meaning. Stevenson, who came out as transgender in in 2021, addressed that relevance while speaking to ComicBook.com about Nimona.

"I don't think it could be happening at a better time," Stevenson said in our interview, which you can check out above. "It truly is this story that has just gained meaning since the comic. Star Wars: Emilia Clarke Has Hilarious Reaction to Being Asked About a Qi'ra Return https://comicbook.com/starwars/news/star-wars-emilia-clarke-return-reaction-qira-marvel-secret-invasion/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 22:37:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh c657cb87-b1dc-46c2-a1d6-9e9061866649

Virtually ever since audiences met Emilia Clarke's Qi'ra in Solo: A Star Wars Story, we've hoped to see the actor return to the role, and while there's no updates on such a possibility, Clarke will still be asked the question for years to come. In a new interview for IMDB, Clarke was asked about such a return, which first saw fellow Star Wars alum Ben Mendelsohn step in to ask the question after Clarke was noticeably flustered, before she joked that she couldn't do Star Wars because she's now a part of Marvel. Clarke is currently appearing in Secret Invasion on Disney+.

After Mendelsohn asks if Clarke would want to reprise Qi'ra, Clarke responded, "Well ... you know what? Um..." before Mendelsohn jumped in to offer to take the question. After they both laugh, Clarke jokes, "I'm in Marvel now, I'm not allowed."

While her initial reaction is sure to result in all sorts of translations, it would seem as though the actor was tasked with offering either an honest reaction or offering a diplomatic response, which could have either ignited or killed hope about such a return. It's unclear whether any of these reactions would have leaned closer toward the likelihood of a return, though only time will tell whether we could ever get more of Qi'ra.

In Solo, audiences learned that Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich) had a relationship with Qi'ra earlier in his life, with the two becoming separated and Qi'ra being sucked into the criminal underworld. The film's ending showed that Qi'ra opted to further immerse herself into the Crimson Dawn, even if it meant allying herself with Maul (Ray Park).

Qi'ra would ultimately return in various comic book events which took place between the events of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. Qi'ra's grand plan was to activate her Crimson Dawn followers throughout the galaxy in hopes of taking out Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine. When her efforts failed, she abandoned her work with Crimson Dawn and all the benefits that came with it, opting for a life of isolation and solitude. When last we saw Qi'ra, she had survived the events of Return of the Jedi to at least see that Vader and Palpatine had been defeated, even if she had no part in it.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Originally Had a Wario-Style Name for Evil Miles https://comicbook.com/movies/news/spider-man-across-the-spider-verse-originally-wario-evil-miles/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 22:05:00 +0000 Nathaniel Brail 57f0ebe6-c027-405e-a56e-ef5a66e30a0d

Sony Pictures Animation has finally released the sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in theaters, and it's another massive hit. All of the reactions to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse have been mostly positive, and it has been having its way at the box office, doing more than the first film in its opening weekend. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse brings audiences back into the world of Miles Morales/Spider-Man, and it seems that the events of the first film have caused a set of chain reactions that lead into the sequel. One of the major things that happens in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse happens to be a major cliffhanger that shows our Miles getting trapped in another universe that just happens to house a variant that is actually the Prowler. It turns out that this version of the character was originally going to be called Wiles, which is a fun play on the Mario and Wario names from the Super Mario Bros. video game universe. Well, at least according to a new tweet from director Kemp Powers, which you can check out below.

"A 2020 movement test of Miles G. (boards by the amazing @wyntonred and @SpencerWan and anim by @NickTyson) explores how he would've been trained by his Uncle Aaron (the original Prowler) before the events of the film," Powers wrote on Twitter. "We called the character "Wiles" back then."

What happens in Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse?

Sony Pictures Animation is teasing big things for our beloved Spider-People in the sequel. Here's a brief synopsis for Across the Spider-Verse: Miles Morales returns to the big screen with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse now playing in theaters after premiering on June 2nd. Miles (Shamiek Moore) reunites with fellow heroes Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld) and Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson) for another web-swinging adventure through the multiverse, finding himself at odds with the Spider-Society led by Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac). Other new heroes include Spider-Woman Jessica Drew (Issa Rae), Spider-Punk (Daniel Kaluuya), and Pavitr Prabhakar (Karan Soni), while new villain the Spot (Jason Schwartzman) also enters the fray. The sequel to Sony Pictures' hit 2018 film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson, and written by the team of Chris Miller, Phil Lord, and Dave Callaham.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is exclusively in theaters now!

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny Director James Mangold Talks Franchise's Mystical Elements (Exclusive) https://comicbook.com/movies/news/indiana-jones-and-the-dial-of-destiny-director-james-mangold-talks-franchises-mystical-elements-exclusive/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 22:00:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 55170520-3645-4d63-8fd1-2eb2562a0bea

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is now playing in theaters, and it marks the fifth Indiana Jones adventure to star Harrison Ford. Ever since Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indy has encountered many mystical relics, and the new film is no different. From the powers of the Holy Grail to visits from interdimensional beings, Indy has seen a lot of unusual things during his adventures. In the new film, Indy teams up with his goddaughter Helena Shaw (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) in order to stop a Nazi-turned-NASA scientist J?rgen Voller (Mads Mikkelsen) from acquiring Archimedes' Dial and using it to go back and win World War II. Warning: Spoilers Ahead! Towards the end of the film, Indy and Helena find themselves traveling to the past and coming face to face with Archimedes himself. Recently, ComicBook.com talked to director James Mangold about creating the balance between an adventure film and a science-fiction one.

"Well, certainly myself and my co-writers on the picture, we discussed it a lot," Mangold said of adding the time travel elements to Indy's story. "But it's not really so controversial, these movies have a very elegant form. The relic always defines the third act and the power of the relic defines the magic of the movie. So whether you're talking about the Ark of the Covenant or you're talking about the Holy Grail, or at all, we can talk about all of them, but whatever goes down in the third act is usually some kind of reaction to the magic and power and mysticism possessed by the relic itself. And usually pretty mind-blowing."

Mangold continued, "I mean, even the original Raiders I think was a pretty big swing in terms of chasing this tablet through the desert for two hours and then suddenly someone opens this box and the movie turns into Poltergeist or Close Encounters of the Third Kind. It was kind of a massive shift, but a beautiful one and one that in a way forced Indiana Jones to confront, as a scientist, something he could not explain. And I think that has become a staple of all the movies, that each movie ends up culminating with a kind of event, a kind of magical, inexplicable event that forces this doctor, this scientist to suddenly have to wrestle with how he's going to explain this with simple logic."

James Mangold Remembers Seeing Raiders of the Lost Ark:

"It's on this day that I went and saw it in Middletown, New York at the Orange County Cinema," Mangold told ComicBook.com on the 42nd anniversary of Raiders of the Lost Ark. "I was alone on the first matinee. And blown away," Mangold shared. "It's crazy," he added when asked how it feels to be making his own Indy film. "I mean, on the simplest level, if you go back to the 17-year-old sitting there, I knew I wanted to be a movie director, although seeing Raiders was only galvanizing that feeling. But if you told me that I'd be making a movie with those people on the screen, that would blow my mind."

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is now playing in theaters. You can watch part of our interview with Mangold above.

Major Fire Breaks Out at Warner Bros. Studio Lot https://comicbook.com/irl/news/major-fire-warner-bros-studio-lot/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 21:16:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson f10a2683-1885-4d88-96ca-6d99aec274d4

A structure at the Warner Bros. Studios lot appears to have caught on fire. On Friday afternoon, photos and videos began to surface of smoke billowing from the studio. It is unclear at this point what started the fire or what part of the studio might have been impacted, but a tweet from @E_SGVScanner claims that it could have been a result of a "transformer issue," while Twitter user @Really_Bad_Egg claims that it was an "exterior Air Conditioning system." Multiple tweets, including one from FOX 11 Los Angeles, have suggested that the flames of the fire were quickly knocked down by the fire department. According to The Hollywood Reporter, no one was hurt from the ordeal, and the fire was not intentionally caused.

According to USFireDept.com, Warner Bros. Studios actually has its own independent fire department, one station, ten career firefighters, and eight volunteer firefighters.

Who Owns Warner Bros. Studios?

As of April of 2022, Warner Bros. has merged with Discovery, Inc. to become the larger media conglomerate known as Warner Bros. Discovery. Warner Bros. Discovery is now run by CEO David Zaslav, who has made headlines multiple times for efforts to trim the company's massive budget.

This has included the cancellation of Batgirl and Scoob!: Holiday Haunt back in August of 2022. Both films, which were already completed and were set to debut on HBO Max, were later reported to be canned for the sake of tax write-downs, which will seemingly be recorded in Q3 of 2022. In the days since, Warner Bros. Discovery removed six HBO Max-exclusive movies from their streaming platform, as well as a number of fan-favorite animated series.

Will Warner Bros. shut down TCM?

In recent days, conversation and speculation have swirled around the fate of Turner Classic Movies, the beloved cable network and brand. After a number of employees exited from the company, including executive VP and general manager Pola Chagnon, who had been with the company for 25 years. Directors Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, and Paul Thomas Anderson held an emergency meeting with Zaslav about the issue. Earlier this month, the trio released a statement indicating that they are optimistic about TCM's future, and its continued efforts to celebrate and curate films from the better part of the past century. Warner Bros. Discovery has since walked back some of those proposed changes, and has enlisted Spielberg, Scorsese, and Anderson to curate future content for the channel.

"Turner Classic Movies has always been more than just a channel," the directors' statement reads. "It is truly a precious resource of cinema, open 24 hours a day seven days a week. And while it has never been a financial juggernaut, it has always been a profitable endeavor since its inception. Earlier this week, David Zaslav, the CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, got in touch to talk about the restructuring of TCM. We understand the pressures and realities of a corporation as large as WBD, of which TCM is one moving part."

"We have each spent time talking to David, separately and together, and it's clear that TCM and classic cinema are very important to him," the statement continues. "Our primary aim is to ensure that TCM's programming is untouched and protected. We are heartened and encouraged by the conversations we've had thus far, and we are committed to working together to ensure the continuation of this cultural touchstone that we all treasure."

Sly Trailer: Netflix Debuts New Sylvester Stallone Documentary https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/sly-trailer-netflix-sylvester-stallone-documentary-teaser/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 21:06:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw b501c481-17d9-4c65-a015-39995adcbf9c

Netflix has released the trailer for Sly, the Sylvester Stallone documentary. This documentary is narrated by Stallone himself, teasing a rare unflinching look at a life and a career and what one may have cost the other.

"Do I have regrets? Hell yeah, I have regrets!" Stallone is heard saying as the trailer opens, framing the grim theme of this documentary. "What is healthier? To live under the illusion that you could have been great, or actually have an opportunity to be great and then you blow it and you realize you're a failure?"

Synopsis: For nearly 50 years Sylvester Stallone has entertained millions with iconic characters and blockbuster franchises, from Rocky to Rambo to The Expendables. This retrospective documentary offers an intimate look at the Oscar-nominated actor-writer-director-producer, paralleling his inspirational underdog story with the indelible characters he has brought to life.

As the actual teaser for Sly unfolds we get a sizzle reel of Stallone footage from both films, news broadcasts, home movies and previously-unseen footage, and interviews. Throughout the footage Sly continues to narrate, saying the following:

"If you're ever on a train: wham, wham! And that's what you're life is: Whoom! Whipping by, it's gone. Filmmaking, it comes at a great price. There's no time for anything else. Nothing inspires you than taking your history, balling it up, and [basketball shot motion] swoosh!"

The teaser does just that: tease some of the darker and more ominous experiences that Sylvester Stallone had as a world-famous star - and the implied personal cost to his family.

While it may have never cost him too much publicly, Sylvester Stallone has certainly had his fair share of private tragedies, controversies, and challenges. The filmmaker has been married three times (including a second marriage to actress Brigitte Nielsen) and fathered five children (two boys from his first marriage; three daughters from his third). His eldest son Sage died of heart disease in 2012, the same year his half-sister Toni Ann Filiti died of lung cancer; Stallone's youngest son Seargeoh was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Syndrome as a child. His marriage to his third wife Jennifer Flavin has its own on-again, off-again turbulence - with Flavin filing for divorce as recently as 2022 before the couple reconciled.

sly-netflix-sylvester-stallone-documentary.jpg
(Photo: Netflix)

Stallone has also had an infamous struggle with physical injuries in the decades of trying to be a macho action icon (Rambo, Rocky). The early days of being a badass doing his own stunts left Stallone in intensive care several times - including the infamous Rocky IV story of Dolph Lundgren punching him sold hard in the chest it literally nearly killed him and breaking his neck while filming The Expendables. There are also several accusations of sexual assault Stallone has faced over the years, including the accusations leveled at him by Filiti, and those of a teenage accuser from the 1980s. His political allegiances have also sparked controversy on both sides, as he has often floated between supporting Republican figures and passionately adhering to views like strict gun control.

As always, it's uncertain just how deeply Netflix's Sly will get into these less flattering aspects of a celebrity figure's life - but it'll be interesting to find out.

Sly will premiere on Netflix in November.

Rebel Moonā€™s Charlie Hunnam Gets Transformed Into Green Arrow for DCU Fan Art https://comicbook.com/movies/news/rebel-moon-charlie-hunnam-transformed-green-arrow-dcu-art/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 20:33:00 +0000 Nathaniel Brail fc614e33-9589-47ab-9492-10828f0f3ae2

DC Studios has been hard at work developing their recently announced movie slate, which will begin with Creature Commandos and Waller on television, while their first feature film will be Superman: Legacy, which is being directed by James Gunn and stars David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan. Co-CEOs Gunn and Peter Safran have numerous other projects in development, but one character that they haven't announced as yet just so happens to be Green Arrow. Some fans are hopeful that we will see the character in the near future and even know which actor they want to play Green Arrow. That actor is none other than Charlie Hunnam (Rebel Moon), and one artist has created a cool concept to show how he could look as the Emerald Archer. An artist on Instagram who goes by the handle @Youssef_Defenshi created a new piece of fan art that gives Rebel Moon's star the classic Green Arrow costume equipped with a bow, arrow, and quiver.

You can check out the fan art below.

Arrow's Stephen Amell on James Gunn Recasting Green Arrow

With Gunn and Safran quickly developing their DC Universe, it didn't take long for former actors who had played these characters to speak out about being replaced. Stephen Amell (Arrow) recently made his final appearance as Green Arrow during the final season of The Flash, and now all eyes are on who will play the role next. Amell recently spoke on Gunn and Safran's recasting of the Emerald Archer, and he didn't hold back.

"I am a custodian for Oliver Queen, and [Grant Gustin] is a custodian for Barry Allen in the same way that... look, I don't think anyone's asking Tom Welling how he feels about who's going to play the new Superman," Amell previously said. "Now, I get the proximity and stuff like that, but there will be another Oliver Queen. There will and it'll be new and cool and exciting and however much the internet hates it is probably a direct indication as to how good it's going to be."

He continued, "You've got to remember that these people aren't picked at random. Very, very smart people think long and hard about how they're going to go about this, and I'm sure that whoever they pick, if in fact they do, maybe they don't care about the character, I don't know, will do an amazing job."

What is Rebel Moon about?

Rebel Moon takes place in a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy that finds itself threatened by the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius. They dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them take a stand the Tyrant. The star-studded cast for the Rebel Moon includes Sofia Boutella, Charlie Hunnam, Ray Fisher, Djimon Hounsou, Jena Malone, Corey Stoll, Ed Skrein, Cleopatra Coleman, Fra Fee, Cary Elwes, and the legendary Anthony Hopkins.

Rebel Moon will make its debut on Netflix on December 22nd.

Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon New Look Revealed on Empire Cover https://comicbook.com/movies/news/zack-snyder-netflix-rebel-moon-new-images-first-look/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 20:07:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw 6dab54ce-dcf9-461e-8bb0-ca580bee7c52

Zack Snyder's name has been trending on the Internet for many DC-related reasons in the last year, but now the acclaimed filmmaker is about to launch his own Star Wars-style universe with Netflix's Rebel Moon. After a year (or more) of secrecy, the marketing campaign for Rebel Moon is officially beginning.

Empire Magazine has dropped some new cover art featuring Rebel Moon on them - check those out below, along with the teasing captions that Empire included with them:

What Is Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon About?

(Photo: Netflix)

"War comes to every world" in Rebel Moon, as the tagline teases. A peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy finds itself threatened by the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius They dispatch a young woman, Kora, with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them take a stand against the Tyrant.

Rebel Moon stars Sofia Boutella (Kingsman), Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy), Ray Fisher (Justice League), Djimon Hounsou (Shazam!), Jena Malone (Sucker Punch), Corey Stoll (Ant-Man 3), Ed Skrein (Deadpool), Cleopatra Coleman (In the Shadow of the Moon), Fra Fee (Hawkeye), Cary Elwes (Saw), and Sir Anthony Hopkins.

Rebel Moon is another original work of Snyder's creation, alongside his zombie-horror film series Army of the Dead. Originally, Snyder wanted to make the film under the banner of Lucasfilm, but that plan changed when Disney acquired Lucasfilm:

"The concept came from being at film school," Snyder previously told Vanity Fair. "I think I had a pitch class -- what would be a cool idea for a movie? And I was like: 'A defending-the-village space movie.' Only afterward, I thought it would fit in the Star Wars universe. Then it went all the way back around. It's been literally on the back burner for a long time. I don't even know if the burner was on for a lot of that time."

Snyder ultimately partnered with Netflix, and according to writer Shay Hatten (the John Wick sequels), the results are pretty awesome:

"Rebel Moon is... in post-production right now. Zack [Snyder] is editing away, and I've seen bits and pieces of it. I've seen scenes here and there and a cut of the trailer. I haven't seen the full movie myself yet, but I'm very, very excited about it. I really feel so lucky to get to work with Zack.... And I think with Rebel Moon, people will just see that it's him really getting to unleash his visual imagination to the fullest extent. And I think people will really dig it."

Rebel Moon arrives on Netflix on December 22nd.

Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken Star Annie Murphy Reflects on Female Friendship https://comicbook.com/movies/news/ruby-gillman-teenage-kraken-annie-murphy-female-friendship-chelsea/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 19:05:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 5df900ff-d682-475d-ba64-c6141e5bab8f

Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken star Annie Murphy talked about female friendship in the animated movie. Comicbook.com's Aaron Perine interviewed the Schitt's Creek actress about her dynamic with Ruby Gillman as Chelsea. Mermaids and Kraken don't see eye to eye in the world of the Dreamworks animated feature. However, it seems like the two young girls try to break the cycle. Sometimes though, jealousy can drive a wedge in friendships that look to be going well. So, there's a familiarity to this Ruby Gillman friendship dynamic that will resonate with young viewers.

"Yeah, I mean, it's not the ideal female friendship dynamic," Murphy began. "Uh, it's kind of the opposite for a minute. There you feel like maybe it is. And it's this, you know, this girl who sees another girl for who she really is and decides to befriend her and encourage her and embrace her, which is great."

"That's what we want in female friendship! And then, it's just like, nope, that's not it at all," she continued. "But, the good news is that Ruby has real family who do love her for who she really is. So, she's okay, even though that relationship with Chelsea fell apart in a big way. She's got her real people with her."

Ruby Gillman and Positive Characters For Young Viewers

Lana Condor stars as Ruby Gillman in the movie and talked to Aaron Perine about how she strives to deliver characters that fans feel great rooting for. It's not hard to find a character Condor has brought to life that doesn't fit into this framework. Check out what she had to say about it down below.

"I think something that I've always really wanted in my career is... I really like playing characters, like goodhearted characters that, maybe will help? Like, I have a bunch of nieces and like younger cousins," Condor said. "I've always wanted to hope that they would watch something of mine and feel like, growing up, 'Like, I can be a good person,' you know? And so, I find that in Ruby a lot."

"I think we were able to portray the multitude of emotions that teenagers will go through. So, you ca have a really great day," she mused. "And in the same day, you could have the worst day of your life. I think that showing that there's dynamic range in young adults emotions. I think it's what makes her relatable."

How Does Ruby Gillman's Adventure Begin?

This summer, DreamWorks Animation dives into the turbulent waters of high school with a hilarious, heartfelt action comedy about a shy teenager who discovers that she's part of a legendary royal lineage of mythical sea krakens and that her destiny, in the depths of the oceans, is bigger than she ever dreamed. Sweet, awkward 16-year-old Ruby Gillman (Lana Condor, To All the Boys I've Loved Before franchise) is desperate to fit in at Oceanside High, but she mostly just feels invisible.

Deadpool 3 Apparently Nearly Completed With Filming https://comicbook.com/movies/news/deadpool-3-reportedly-nearly-completed-with-filming/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 18:04:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame a81ba2b3-7b7b-4229-9901-fdd2f2bec4b2

The Writers Guild of America is already on strike, and if a deal isn't struck by midnight PT tonight, the Screen Actors Guild will join them, grinding most of Hollywood to a halt. That makes it a sprint to the finish line for Deadpool 3, which apparently is [thisclose] to completing principal photography. Since the writers strike started, a number of productions have been halted, while others have tried to sneak in under the wire. Deadpool 3 was one of the latter, in spite of WGA member Ryan Reynolds serving as the film's lead, and now it looks like the plan is either to wrap production, or at least get as close as possible, in the hopes of maintaining the movie's planned May 2024 release date, according to Deadline.

With the multiverse taking point on so many big blockbusters, Deadpool 3 seems to be parodying the phenomenon, with unconfirmed rumors that various former X-Men actors will appear in the film, along with Fox's Deadpool star Ben Affleck. The movie is closer to completion than other big tentpole blockbusters, leading Disney and Marvel to give it Captain America: Brave New World's release date, moving it up by a few months.

Other movies that are either done, or so close to done that they hope to beat out a potential strike, include Sony's Bad Boys 4, which recently wrapped in Atlanta and is currently shooting pickups in Miami; Warner Bros' Beetlejuice 2, which is wrapping soon, and the recently-wrapped sequel to Sony's Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Focus Features' Amy Winehouse biopic Back to Black has also wrapped principal photography already.

Deadpool 3 will be written by Bob's Burgers' Wendy Molyneaux and Lizzie Molyneaux-Loeglin, with Deadpool and Deadpool 2 writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick reportedly also returning to contribute to the script. Emma Corin (Pennyworth) will star, alongside Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. The film will be the first in the franchise to be released by Marvel Studios, following the acquisition of 20th Century Fox by Disney.

"It will be rated R and we are working on a script right now, and Ryan's overseeing a script right now," Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige shared in a 2021 interview, in which he said Deadpool was "a very different type of character in the MCU, and Ryan is a force of nature, which is just awesome to see him bring that character to life."

Barring any complications, Deadpool 3 is set for release on May 3, 2024.

Tron: Ares Adds Jodie Turner-Smith and Greta Lee https://comicbook.com/movies/news/tron-ares-3-sequel-casting-jodi-turner-smith-greta-lee-jared-leto/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 18:02:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh b83659d5-8fe7-4531-b5c4-803127533227

The good news for Tron fans continues this week, as The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Jodie Turner-Smith (Queen & Slim, Star Wars: The Acolyte) and Greta Lee (Past Lives, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) have joined the cast of Tron: Ares. No details about the characters they could be playing have been revealed, though they join the previously announced Jared Leto and Evan Peters. The earliest reports about a third film in the franchise date back to the release of 2010's Tron: Legacy, which was meant to revive the '80s franchise, yet it hasn't been until relatively recently that promising details have been confirmed about the project heading into production. Tron: Ares is set to start shooting in August.

The new film comes from Joachim R?nning, who previously directed Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and co-directed Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. With the announcement of Peters' casting, The Hollywood Reporter teased of the plot, "While the two previous movies were largely set inside the world of computers and programs, the script for Ares, written by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne, is said to focus on the emergence of a sentient program that crosses over into the human world that is not ready for contact. Leto, who has been attached to the project for several years, is to play Ares, the manifestation of the program. It is unclear who Peters would play although the script calls for a soldier in the computer world and an awkward gamer in the human world."

Arguably more than the plots themselves, the previous Tron films are more memorable for the unique visual effects they utilized to bring the stories to life. Writer/director of the original 1982 Tron Steven Lisberger recently recalled how he hoped to serve as a guiding force for the upcoming Ares.

"The Tron team is hard at work," Lisberger shared with The Hollywood Reporter. "They are always hard at work. It's going to happen. My goal with these things in playing the Obi-Wan role is to say the one sentence that has an impact. I try to say something that is useful to them without getting into the weeds."

The debut film had a reported budget of $17 million and went on to earn $50 million worldwide. Tron: Legacy had a reported budget of $170 million and would go on to take in $400 million worldwide, but given that Disney also released Toy Story 3 and Alice in Wonderland that same year, both of which went on to take in more than $1 billion worldwide, Legacy fell far short of expectations.

Stay tuned for details on Tron: Ares.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny Box Office Launches to $7.2 Million in Previews https://comicbook.com/movies/news/indiana-jones-and-the-dial-of-destiny-box-office-7-million-dollars-previews/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 17:35:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 29a7b807-6e45-4af1-830b-e2bf200a7048

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny came out of the gates with $7.2 million in previews at the domestic box office. Harrison Ford's swan song as the adventurer is in 4,600 theaters this weekend and will need a nice strong weekend to start things off right. It's been widely reported that Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny was an expensive movie to make. Estimates indicate that the project's budget comes in around $295 million. That's not the most money anyone's ever spent on a motion picture, but it's a massive investment from Disney and Lucasfilm.

In a pandemic era where financial tightening has been the name of the game for so many families, it's been a mixed bag this summer so far. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has performed admirably. People are expecting big things out of Barbie and Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One. But, some of these massive releases are probably going to be squeezed by the competition. In the realm of Indiana Jones, Lucasfilm has brand awareness to hang it's hat on. Top Gun: Maverick focused on a beloved hero from over 30 years ago, and that worked out. Maybe the nostalgia will win out in the end.

Is Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny Good?

Comicbook.com's Patrick Cavanaugh reviewed the movie for the site. In his review, our staff writer found the grandeur of the older Indy adventures there, but it all feels a little bit unbalanced. James Mangold puts his stamp on some of the now trademark Indiana Jones sequences, but the movie feels like a strange ending to one of cinema's most beloved heroes.

"While the rogue archaeologist, played by Harrison Ford, might have been driven by "fortune and glory" at times, his quests were often to preserve history for future generations," Cavanaugh said. "For Ford's final outing, James Mangold stepped into the director's chair with Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and despite it largely managing to capture that sense of whimsy and excitement Spielberg delivered in four films, it feels like too little (yet also too much), too late."

While some may disagree with the choice to de-age Ford for sections of the film, the star is really impressed with what they're able to accomplish on-camera. He spoke to CNN about seeing the "40-year-old Harrison Ford" work firsthand and how surreal it is to be working with Lucasfilm over the course of his long career.

"It is 40-year-old Harrison Ford, and that's why it looks so good," Ford told CNN. "I've been working for Lucasfilm most of my adult life. Every frame of the film[s] ... that we've made together ... could be mined with, here we go again, artificial intelligence. And they could find the right angle, the right light, so that it's my mouth, my eyes, my face, married. It's not photoshopped or anything. It doesn't look that way. It's real."

What is Indiana Jones Up Against This Time?

The iconic Harrison Ford returns for one last adventure when Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny premiered in theaters on June 30th. Lucasfilm's latest film in the long-running franchise sees Dr. Jones team up with his goddaughter Helena Shaw (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) in a race against nefarious forces to secure a powerful artifact. The duo will go up against the mysterious former Nazi-turned-NASA scientist J?rgen Voller (Mads Mikkelsen), and the film also features stars Boyd Holbrook, Antonio Banderas, Toby Jones, and John Rhys Davies. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is directed by James Mangold and is set to be Ford's final appearance as the iconic archeologist.

Gollum Developer Daedalic Entertainment Halts Development on New Lord of the Rings Game https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/gollum-daedalic-entertainment-new-lord-of-the-rings-game-halts-development/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 17:27:00 +0000 Tanner Dedmon ca851cde-e04f-4b17-ada0-69bc0bf8e4e7

Daedalic Entertainment, the developer of the much maligned The Lord of the Rings: Gollum game, is no longer going to be developing games at all. Instead, the company owned by Nacon will now shift its focus to publishing games. That means that development on the new Lord of the Rings game the company was working on after Gollum has been halted, though it's unclear right now what the fate of that game looks like beyond today's news.

News of Daedalic's new plans came from statements provided to GamesWirtschaft which said Daedalic will focus on publishing games moving forward with "eight promising releases" on the horizon. Daedalic has developed numerous games over the years with the most recent being Gollum, A Year of Rain, and State of Mind with just as many published over the years, too.

In the statements provided to GamesWirtschaft, the studio called this a "difficult turning point" but also described the transition as "a new beginning in the long history of Daedalic Entertainment." That change will also affect some positions within the company. Of the more than 90 employees at Daedalic, 25 will be affected.

"We value each and every member of our team and it is important to us that the transition goes as smoothly as possible," Daedalic said. "Therefore, we will support our former employees in finding new opportunities within our network."

To say that Gollum did not meet expectations would be an understatement. After getting lambasted due to bugs, finicky mechanics, and downgraded graphics from what was shown off before to what got released, the game went as low as a 1.1 user score on Metacritic. Those user scores can sometimes be fudged but sensationalize and passionate reviews, but whether you put stock in that one or the critic score, the latter was hardly any better.

Daedalic issued an apology to Gollum players almost immediately after the game released and committed to updates and fixes for the game's problems moving forward, though it's unclear what plans for that look like now that Daedalic is shifting to publishing games instead. As mentioned previously, it's also unclear what the future of the other in-development Lord of the Rings game looks like now that work on it has been paused.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny Director Teases the Alternate Ending He Considered https://comicbook.com/movies/news/indiana-jones-and-the-dial-of-destiny-ending-alternate-explained-james-mangold/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 17:15:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh e373dee9-c3b8-4d89-860f-e18baf59d5a7

From face meltings to suspension bridges to Holy Grails to alien encounters, the Indiana Jones franchise has a history of delivering audiences shocking and supernatural finales, with Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny honoring that trend. As the title of the movie implies, and as was teased in promotional materials, the Dial of Destiny would seemingly offer anyone who wields it the chance to travel through time, which sets the stage for a thrilling sendoff for Harrison Ford's iconic explorer. Director James Mangold recently confirmed that, before settling on the ending in the finished film, he toyed with exploring an alternate ending for the hero. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is in theaters now.

WARNING: Spoilers below for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

Throughout Dial of Destiny, Mads Mikkelsen's J?rgen Voller wants to obtain the object to be able to travel back in time to 1939 to kill Hitler and take his seat of power before World War II. Due to some miscalculations, Voller and Indy instead go back to 200 B.C., with our hero meeting Archimedes himself while he is in the process of creating the dial.

Mangold pointed out that he had nearly considered telling a story in which the film did go back to revisit 1939, but with how much time was spent talking about Archimedes, he felt it was more appropriate to show audiences this point in time.

"I would never make this choice without ruminating over lots of choices," Mangold confirmed to Insider. "The other interesting thing was that one of the things I thought about was even if we did travel in time, would Mads' theory be right and they'd land in Nazi Germany? And the last act of the movie would be Indy trying to foil Mads' plan? But the more I sketched that out in my mind, the more that became kind of just a spy movie at the end. I couldn't find a way to emotional resonance."

He continued, "It occurred to me that we've been talking about three different time periods a lot in the movie: 1968, 1944, and 200 BC ... So why don't we go there? Because that's the only one I've been hearing a lot about but I haven't seen."

When Indiana does meet Archimedes, he even attempts to stay in these ancient times instead of returning home, though Phoebe Waller-Bridge's Helena Shaw knocks him out and brings him back home. Mangold pointed out that, by traveling to 200 B.C., it offered the character something he'd never experienced.

"The idea immediately moved me," the director admitted. "Indy's character would suddenly be faced with something he's only imagined all his life. The reality of something he's been only looking at through the keyhole of history and artifacts and is suddenly in it. And what a powerful moment that might be for Harrison himself to play."

Jason Blum Addresses Potential for Insidious/Sinister Crossover https://comicbook.com/movies/news/jason-blum-addresses-potential-for-insidioussinister-crossover/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 17:03:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame c9caedbb-aaae-43c5-a6cf-7800781316b6

Blumhouse has been the heart of horror for much of the last couple decades, with franchises like The Conjuring, Insidious, and Sinister making big money at the box office and becoming instant audience favorites. With the worlds of Annabelle and The Conjuring always expanding, fans have sometimes wondered about the "shared universe" potential for some of the Blumhouse movies, and producer Jason Blum admitted in a recent interview that it's something he and his team have considered. More specifically, the Sinister and Insidious franchises felt like a good fit for some kind of crossover, leading to some development on a project that never quite got off the ground.

It makes sense to be cautious about these things. While Freddy vs. Jason and Alien vs. Predator were both huge hits, for example, none of those franchises has ever hit those same heights again since. The challenge, Blum explained, was finding a story that made the crossover worth doing.

"I think it would be fun to do, but we have to find the right story," Blum told Cinepop. "We developed it for a while, like you said, you're right, we did develop it for a while, but we could never come up with a great movie. And I didn't want to make a movie just for the sake of combining the two franchises. I wanted to make a movie that was really good. We never came up with a great idea, but I'm open."

Insidious, which has spawned three other films in its series, centers on a couple whose son slips into what seems like a coma -- but is in fact a kind of astral projection, making him a conduit for demonic activity and essentially allowing him to become possessed. Sinister follows a struggling true-crime writer, who finds a number of especially violent and gruesome snuff films, and finds himself pulled into supernatural intrigue, desperately trying to keep his family safely out of it.

Blum is currently working the press rounds in support of Insidious: The Red Door. As a studio head, though, he has been answering plenty of questions about other projects, including the long-delayed Spawn reboot from comics legend Todd McFarlane.

"I would say you have a lot to hope for because it's in very very active development," Blum told ComicBook.com's Chris Killian. "What needs to happen is that my fellow friends the writers and the studios need to figure out their differences and get back to writing, but we've got a great group of folks putting it together, and my hope is that that movie -- my prediction is maybe we'll actually see a Spawn movie in '25. No promises, but that's my prediction."

Hocus Pocus 2 Star Hopes to Return for New Sequel https://comicbook.com/horror/news/hocus-pocus-3-sam-richardson-return-reaction-gilbert/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 16:09:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh da67c6b9-a468-4358-8ad4-76246d7893d5

While last year's Hocus Pocus 2 brought back original Hocus Pocus stars Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy, it also introduced audiences to new characters, such as Sam Richardson's Gilbert. A third film in the series was confirmed just earlier this month, though there are many unknown factors about what this upcoming adventure would explore, but Richardson recently confirmed his interest in bringing back Gilbert. Between the current writers' strike and potential actors' strikes on the horizon, we shouldn't expect substantial momentum on the project anytime soon. Hocus Pocus 3 doesn't currently have a release date.

When asked by TheWrap about whether Gilbert will be returning for the third film, Richardson revealed, "I certainly hope so, I had such a great time playing Gilbert in Hocus Pocus 2. I'd go and play on that set any day of the week. You just tell me, I'll be there."

In the original Hocus Pocus, the evil Sanderson sisters were resurrected when a virgin inadvertently lit the Black Flame Candle. In the sequel, Gilbert intentionally recreated the candle to bring the sisters back, having witnessed their magic when he was a kid. By the end of the film, Gilbert had realized the error of his ways and helped our teen-aged heroes take down the sisters, which would allow him to make a more amicable return for a third film.

The original Hocus Pocus landed in theaters in the summer of 1993 and was relatively overlooked at the time, likely due to it hitting theaters so far ahead of Halloween and with Jurassic Park having been released shortly before the Halloween-themed adventure. Over the years, broadcasts of Hocus Pocus on various networks saw an entire generation of young viewers become enchanted with the experience its following grew more passionate with each passing year.

It may have taken nearly 30 years for a sequel to emerge, but it sounds as though it won't take nearly as long for a third entry, given how successful Hocus Pocus 2 was for Disney+. It's currently unknown if Midler, Parker, and Najimy will return for a third film, but sequel director Anne Fletcher and sequel writer Jen D'Angelo are reportedly on board.

Stay tuned for updates on Hocus Pocus 3.

Cleopatra: Gal Gadot Offers Update on Remake https://comicbook.com/movies/news/cleopatra-gal-gadot-offers-update-on-remake/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 16:08:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 7a94f4a1-0c52-43c3-bc8d-c36d70c19b83

It has been almost two years since Gal Gadot and Patty Jenkins set up a movie about the life of Cleopatra. After leaving Paramount (and being pursued by Universal) and changing directors (Jenkins stepped away to focus on other projects), the movie is seemingly back in motion -- although obviously, with the Writers Guild of America on strike and the Screen Actors Guild looking ready to follow suit, that's a relative term. That said, in a new magazine interview, Gadot talked about the decision to take on the role, why it's important, and what she's hoping to accomplish with the movie.

Since Cleopatra is a well-known historical figure, this is of course not the first time someone has made a movie about her. Famously, Elizabeth Taylor played Cleopatra in a 1963 film. Still, most of those have relied heavily on a very mythologized version of the story, in which Cleopatra was treated a bit like Helen of Troy -- as a woman so beautiful that everyone around her lost reason.

"Israel borders Egypt, and I grew up with so many stories about Cleopatra, and she's like a household name," Gadot told Vogue Hong Kong. "You know, if Wonder Woman is the imaginary strong female leader, Cleopatra's actually the real one. That's a perfect example of a story that I wanted to tell because I started reading different books about Cleopatra, and I said, Wow, that's fascinating. All I ever saw in regards to Cleopatra from film, was that she was this seductive woman who had an affair with Julius Caesar and Marc Anthony. But the truth is, there's so much more to her. This woman was so ahead of her time. Egypt and what Egypt was back then, was still futuristic to where we are today. I can't say much. But to me, I'm so passionate to tell her story and to bring justice to this character, and her legacy and celebrate her and her legacy. We have a beautiful script, and I cannot wait to share this story with the world and change the narrative of Cleopatra simply being a seductor."

Marvel's The Falcon and the Winter Soldier director Kari Skogland will helm Cleopatra, from a screenplay by Laeta Kalogridis (Shutter Island, Altered Carbon). Cleopatra will be produced by Jenkins, Gadot and her Pilot Wave Motion Pictures partner Jaron Varsano, and Atlas Entertainment's Charles Roven. Kalogridis will serve as executive producer.

The Flash Should've Had Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Batman Instead of Michael Keaton https://comicbook.com/dc/news/the-flash-jeffrey-dean-morgan-thomas-wayne-batman-michael-keaton/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 15:25:00 +0000 Brandon Davis 5f5c0b31-aba0-4147-8911-ffa98415e09a

While The Flash bringing back Michael Keaton as Batman was an exciting move for the nostalgia-loving crowd who adores the pair of Batman films he starred in 30 years ago, there is a better version of the story which could have been told in the film aiming to wrap of the tale of the DCEU. Launching in 2013 with Man of Steel, the DCEU introduced Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Thomas Wayne in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Morgan's character was the father to Ben Affleck's Bruce Wayne, the man who went on to become the DCEU's Batman until James Gunn and Peter Safran's reboot of sorts recasts the role for Batman: The Brave and the Bold. For the sake of telling the best story in The Flash, Morgan should have become the Caped Crusader as Thomas Wayne.

The Flash loosely adapts a comic book by the name of Flashpoint. The 2011 comic from Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert uses the same story telling devices and overall themes at its core; Barry Allen wants to go back in time and save his mother from being murdered but in his attempt rewrites history and creates a chaotic new timeline. Much of the consequences for Barry's actions from the comics are absent and replaced with others in The Flash. For example, Wonder Woman and the Amazons were at war with Aquaman and Atlantis which could be a storyline removed for the sake of keeping the scale of The Flash much tighter (and presumably the budget, too). The Flash didn't suffer from removing the sprawling war storyline, though. It is the removal of the new timeline seeing Thomas Wayne become Batman after his son was murdered instead of him which was the big missed opportunity.

According to director Andy Muschietti, Keaton's Batman is a direct continuation of the character last seen in 1992's Batman Returns. Oddly enough, Muschietti's explanation for Keaton's Bruce Wayne being a continuation hinges on the world being the same when that is what looks most different as it is more in line with the look of the DCEU and, more specifically, 2013's Man of Steel settings than anything Burton created. Michael Keaton reprised his role quite well and served the story just fine. He was seasoned and knowledgable, presumably having many more adventures in the years which have passed since we last saw him in the part.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan's Thomas Wayne as Batman would have been better, though. This would have fallen more in line with the comic. This is, of course, an element which shouldn't be a deciding factor when adapting these stories to film as the mediums call for creative liberties to be taken for the best story to be told in the new format. The Flash director Andy Muschietti told ComicBook.com, "just a literal interpretation of Flashpoint the comic would fall flat in my opinion, so we populated it with twists and turns to make the story a little more fun." The deciding factors should go both ways, changing elements to better serve the cinematic version of the story but also keeping threads which would help tell the best story and, in this case, Thomas Wayne's Batman is that best version.

Morgan's Thomas Wayne as Batman would have served the relationships and depth of the film more poignantly. This movie's Barry Allen has a relationship with Ben Affleck's Bruce Wayne. According to the character's dialogue in a previous film, he doesn't have very many friends and Bruce was one of the people who helped him become a better hero. Losing the version of Bruce Wayne played by Affleck to another Bruce Wayne with a different face is tough for this Barry Allen. However, the weight of realizing he was now existing in a timeline where that Bruce Wayne was killed and his father had to cope with this and ultimately become Batman would have added an intriguing level of inner conflict for the character. How far was he willing to go to save his mom? Would he let his friend die as a child? It's a near impossible question which would have made The Flash better and I say this as someone who enjoyed the film!

Furthermore, if The Flash was always intended to be a "reset" for the DCEU as it segues into a more cohesive DC Universe, why not give a shred of what was used to a establish the universe any light of day in the end? Zack Snyder's casting of Morgan as Thomas Wayne was strategic, wanting a version of Thomas Wayne who was a "tough guy," when he was killed in front of his son. He didn't necessarily plan to have Morgan go on to become Batman in a Flashpoint adaptation but he has since agreed it, "could have been cool." Meanwhile, Morgan has been open about wanting the opportunity for years. Now, he's at work on The Walking Dead: Dead City after The Walking Dead wrapped up its run and took a role on The Boys. Given how strongly it seemed Morgan wanted to make a Batman story happen, it is easy to believe the actor would have made his schedule for the television shows work to give a few months, at most, to a movie like The Flash.

Keaton was great as Batman in The Flash, even if the character's ending felt unceremonious and abrupt. It certainly didn't seem to be handled as well as other nostalgic returns like Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which shined light on the character's history and brought more emotional depth, in the end. Yet, there can only be one grand return. Now, it has been reported that had The Flash been a success at the box office, Keaton would have starred in a Batman Beyond movie. Fans have wanted this film for decades! Yet, The Flash seems to have squandered the possibility and, if the film has not been killed completely, lessened what should have been a massive level of excitement for Keaton to finally put the suit back on.

The argument that Morgan playing Batman rather than Keaton would have sold less tickets would seem reasonable if The Flash was selling tickets in the first place. The film is not performing at the box office for a myriad of reasons. Morgan's Batman certainly would not have been some sort of box office savior but his role would have given The Flash some added depth while simultaneously preserving the return of Keaton's Batman in for more meaningful adventure which could have been more focused on him and the incredibly immersive world where Burton created for him.

Do you agree The Flash missed an opportunity to have Jeffrey Dean Morgan play Thomas Wayne as Batman in The Flash or are you happy with the return given to Michael Keaton with the part? Share your thoughts in the comment section or send them my way on Twitter! The Flash is now playing in theaters.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny's Ending & Time Travel Explained https://comicbook.com/movies/news/indiana-jones-5-dial-destiny-time-travel-explained/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 14:54:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw 8983e7ae-83a4-414f-b92c-19144364e4a3

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is now out in theaters, and fans of the series likely have a lot of questions about the film's rumored time travel storyline. If you want to know if and how time travel factors into Indiana Jones 5, and you don't care about SPOILERS, read on below!

It's understandable if some viewers want to know upfront if this latest Indiana Jones movie goes too far out there with its sci-fi mysticism. After all, the most common criticism of the previous film, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, is that its climactic reveals of alien influence on Earth were too out of place in the Indiana Jones franchise. So if we're talking time travel, that's a story trope that can easily go off the rails - even in sci-fi films built around that plot device.

How Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny Uses Time Travel Explained

indiana-jones-5-dial-destiny-explained-time-travel.jpg
(Photo: Disney / Lucasfilm)

The main plotline of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny sees Indy (Harrison Ford) pursued by competing forces who are all after the same prize: Archimedes's Dial. The Ancient Greek scientist, mathematician, engineer, and inventor had theorized that there were "fissures in time," that could be predicted and mapped - pockets where the space/time continuum could be breached. Nazi mathematician and physicist J?rgen Voller (Mads Mikkelsen) pursues Indy and his god-daughter Helena Shaw (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) across the world, tracking down the halves of Archimedes's Dial and the key to connecting them. Ultimately (and in classic Indiana Jones fashion) Voller gets the dial and leads a chase to one of the time fissures he predicts will take him back to 1939, where he'll kill Adolf Hitler and install himself as a "better" leader for the Nazis.

Dial of Destiny's Ending & Time Loop Explained

(Photo: Disney / Lucasfilm)

Unfortunately for Voller, his calculations were off, and instead of entering a time portal back to 1939, he ends up traveling all the way back to Ancient Greece, during the infamous Siege of Syracuse by the Romans. Voller and his men die in a fiery plane crash after their plane and Indy's plane are both critically damaged by Scorpion harpoons fired by the Roman ships. Indy and Helena parachute safely to the shore, where they are met by Archimedes himself.

Earlier in the film, Indiana Jones and Helena discover the final half of Archimedes's Dial buried with the man himself; however, when they open his tomb, they find Archimedes's remains also contain evidence of future knowledge and technology (a wristwatch). Indy and Helena take this discovery as proof that Archimedes was a time traveler, who must've come to the future at some point. When they instead travel to the past and meet Archimedes, Indy realizes that Archimedes was actually influenced by them, traveling back in time. By showing Archimedes the completed Dial of Destiny, and leaving behind his watch, Indy actually inspires the famous scholar to create his Antikythera machine (the dial) and other create mathematical and physics theories that will influence science throughout history.

The movie toys with the idea of keeping Jones in Ancient Greece as the man who helps Archimedes in his studies - but fearing the dangers of paradox, Helena instead knocks Indy out and takes him back to the future, leaving just the dead Nazis and the plane wreckage (as well as Indy's gifts) as the inspiration Archimedes uses.

This climatic sequence of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is a big leap for the series - but it arguably plays better than the extraterrestrial reveals of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Indy getting the history he loves to study so passionately was fitting for the character and added a nice twist to the story.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is now in theaters.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny Reveals What Happened to Shia LaBeouf's Mutt https://comicbook.com/movies/news/indiana-jones-and-the-dial-of-destiny-reveals-what-happened-to-shia-labeoufs-mutt-died-spoilers/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 14:00:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak bfd3e852-fc2b-4d4a-90f3-af247455a4e0

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is now playing in theaters and it sees Harrison Ford donning the hat and whip for the last time. The new film also featured some returning stars from the franchise, including John Rhys-Davies as Sallah in addition to a surprise or two. The movie sees Indy teaming up with his goddaughter, Helena Shaw, who is played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. It's been known for a while that Shia LaBeouf would not be returning as Indy's son, Mutt Williams, the role he played in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Many fans have wondered if the new movie would address the character. Turns out, Mutt's fate has been revealed, and it's pretty sad. Warning: Spoilers Ahead!

In Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Indy teams up with the motorcycling Mutt before he knows he's his son. It's first revealed that he's the son of Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen) before Marion eventually tells Indy that Mutt is theirs and that his real name is Henry Williams. Of course, Indy's real first name is also Henry. At the end of the fourth film, Indy and Marion get married with Mutt in attendance. At the beginning of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, it's revealed that Marion left Indy. Later in the film, Indy reveals to Helena that Marion left after Mutt was killed. "I'd stop my son from enlisting," Indy tells Helena when asked what he would do if he had the power to go back in time. While the Vietnam War is not mentioned by name, the timeline of the film indicates that Mutt would have died then.

Last year, director James Mangold assured Entertainment Weekly that audiences would "find out what happened" to Mutt.

"I mean, 1969 is the beginning of now, really, in terms of technology and the space race," Mangold explained. "So, you have Cold Wars, nuclear power, intrigue, the lack of clear good guys and bad guys. In the same way, you have to be really considerate about how you try and transpose a fairly simplistic kind of black-hat, white-hat sensibility into a period that is more complicated. We try to exploit that by jumping forward into 1969 to a hero who is used to a black and white world, [but finds himself] in a world that has gone gray."

What Is Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny About?

The iconic Harrison Ford returns for one last adventure when Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny premieres in theaters on June 30th.

Alan Arkin, Oscar and Tony Winner, Dead at 89 https://comicbook.com/movies/news/alan-arkin-oscar-and-tony-winner-dead-at-89/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 12:50:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 5026a1fd-6b4c-4810-82e9-cfd0b9634fe7 Beloved Hollywood actor Alan Arkin, star of movies like Catch-22 and Little Miss Sunshine, has died. He was 89 years old. Arkin's decades-long career touched on everything from Oscar-winning classics to crowd-pleasing franchises, starring opposite everyone from Peter Falk and John Cusack to Ethan Hawke and Steve Carell. His screen career started in 1957, although his first really notable role came in the 1966 film The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming. In between those two points, he did a lot of stage work, earning a Tony Award for his part in Enter Laughing in 1963. Arkin starred in dozens of films and TV series since, and remained active right up until the end of his life, appearing in a major role in Minions: The Rise of Gru last year.

"Our father was a uniquely talented force of nature, both as an artist and a man," his sons Adam, Matthew, and Anthony told People in a statement. "A loving husband, father, grand and great grandfather, he was adored and will be deeply missed."

While 1968's Inspector Clouseau was a critical and commercial disappointment, its existence still means that Arkin was the second actor ever to play the iconic role, taking over from The Pink Panther star Peter Sellers (and then handing the role back over to him for the next installment). Just a couple of years later, Arkin would have a career-defining role in Catch-22.

In 1970 and 1971, just as Catch-22 was making its way into theaters, Arkin recurred in a handful of episodes of Sesame Street, playing a character named Larry, but by 1972 had gone in a very different direction, starring in The Last of the Red Hot Lovers. In the years that followed, he would play Sigmund Freud in The Seven Percent Solution and frazzled father Sheldon Kornpett in The In-Laws, which saw him bouncing off Peter Falk in one of the most beloved comedies of the 1970s.

In the 1980s, Arkin started to dabble in genre work a bit, playing roles in Full Moon High, The Last Unicorn, and The Return of Captain Invincible before stepping into a 3-episode guest arc on St. Elsewhere. Around this time, he also started to take on more stage and TV work, appearing on American Playhouse and in the much-hyped TV movie Escape From Sobibor alongside Rutger Hauer.

Arkin kicked off the 1990s with a string of beloved films that remain relevant to this day, including Edward Scissorhands, The Rocketeer, and Glengarry Glen Ross. Around this time, he started to really lean into being an older-looking, neurotic, Jewish actor, with roles like Glengarry Glen Ross and later Grosse Pointe Blank really leaning into that archetype. He played roles in So I Married an Axe Murderer, North, and The Jerky Boys before ending the decade with Gattaca, The Slums of Beverly Hills, and the aforementioned Grosse Pointe Blank, in which he dug back to his Freudian roots to play a psychiatrist -- although this time, one far out of his depth.

By the 2000s, Arkin was one of the most respected characters actors in Hollywood, and he would stand out even in small roles, whether in America's Sweethearts, Will & Grace, or The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause. In 2006, after having previously been nominated for The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming and The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, Arkin finally won an Academy Award for his eccentric and memorable performance in Little Miss Sunshine. The role also netted him a BAFTA Award (his second, after The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming) and a Screen Actors Guild Award (his first, although he got another a few years later for Argo).

Working less by the late 2000s, Arkin nevertheless managed to alternate critical darlings with franchise fare, starring with Little Miss Sunshine's Steve Carell again in Get Smart before taking roles in Marley & Me, The Muppets, and Argo. He played J.D. Salinger in Netflix's BoJack Horseman, and appeared in 2019's remake of Dumbo and 2020's Spenser Confidential, all while playing Norman Newlander on The Kominsky Method, a role that he played until 2021.

Our condolences to Mr. Arkin's family, friends, collaborators, and fans during this difficult time.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny: Does Ke Huy Quan Return as Short Round? https://comicbook.com/movies/news/indiana-jones-and-the-dial-of-destiny-does-ke-huy-quan-return-as-short-round-post-credit-scene/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 12:00:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak f845f30a-1122-4e7b-8abc-d8886218aca1

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is now playing in theaters, and it sees the return of Harrison Ford as the titular hero. This marks Ford's fifth time playing Indy, and he's not the only actor returning to the franchise. John Rhys-Davies is also back as Sallah, a role he played in both Raiders of the Lost Ark and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Many fans have been wondering if recent Oscar-winner Ke Huy Quan would be making an appearance as Short Round from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. While director James Mangold previously said the actor wouldn't be showing up in the film, some fans were holding out hope for a surprise post-credit scene. However, Ke Huy Quan does not appear at all in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

"We looked at all these different things, but the first thing we were trying to do was assemble a story that made sense in the present, meaning in the 1969 section of the movie," Mangold recently told IGN. "If you notice... the only person we follow through the whole way is Indy himself. Joined by Helena [Shaw, played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge], and I felt like we needed to have a female lead who challenged him. But we looked at all these different things and tried to figure out how they would work. I just didn't want another adult along for the ride."

Mangold added of Quan's recent success, "It's also thrilling what he's done this year, and I'm so happy for him to have suddenly found an entirely new picture to assert both his acting talent and his incredible martial arts skill."

What Is Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny About?

The iconic Harrison Ford returns for one last adventure when Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny premieres in theaters on June 30th.

Hulu Acquires Directorial Debut From Spider-Verse's Jake Johnson https://comicbook.com/movies/news/hulu-acquires-directorial-debut-from-spider-verses-jake-johnson/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 11:59:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 0b0d6005-3b89-4dfa-8720-82b4c34c666d

Hulu has acquired the rights to Self Reliance, the directorial debut of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Stumptown star Jake Johnson. Johnson also wrote the movie, which will debut on Hulu this fall. Self Reliance stars Johnson alongside Anna Kendrick, Natalie Morales, Andy Samberg, GaTa (Dave), Emily Hampshire (Schitt's Creek), Mary Holland, Boban Marjanovi?, Christopher Lloyd, and Wayne Brady. The deal was struck after Hulu won a bidding war for the movie on the heels of the world premiere of the MRC-financed film at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival in March, which was a festival favorite, screening to a standing-room-only audience.

Self Reliance is being described as a comedic thriller. The movie centers on a man who enters into a modified type of the "world's deadliest game," where he is being hunted and gets $1 million if he survives. Per the rules, they can only attack him when he's alone, so he figures it will be easy...until he realizes that it sounds ridiculous to everyone else around him, and they don't believe him when he tells them they need to hang out.

Johnson has stayed pretty busy in recent years. In addition to appearing in the Jurassic World and Spider-Verse franchises, the star also headlined Hoops, an adult animated comedy for Netflix, and Minx, the acclaimed HBO series that was cancelled after its second season had already been shot. The series was saved by Starz.

"We've been removed from HBO Max but we're still finishing the season. So thankfully they didn't halt production. We're about a week away from being finished shooting," Johnson shared on Instagram after the initial cancellation news came down. "From what I am hearing S1 & S2 (and hopefully S3) will find a new home, the question is where. The crew really killed it this season. [Blake McClure] crushed as DP. The set design/wardrobe/everything. It was truly impressive & worth watching. I am eager to find a new platform for these episodes."

Here's the official synopsis from Hulu:

In Self Reliance, when a man is offered a million dollars to play a game in which hunters try to kill him, he thinks he has found the perfect loophole: they can only attack when he's alone. His only problem is that none of his friends or family believe the game is real.

Self Reliance is produced by Lonely Island and Walcott Productions, while Ali Bell, Joe Hardesty and Jake Johnson serve as producers and executive producers include Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, Jorma Taccone.

Nimona Creator ND Stevenson "Can't Believe" Long-Awaited Netflix Film Is Finally Here https://comicbook.com/anime/news/nimona-creator-nd-stevenson-cant-believe-long-awaited-netflix-film-is-finally-here/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 11:19:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame f9e739dc-5399-46d3-873b-50c5ff214470

In 2015, Blue Sky Studios announced that they had acquired the rights to ND Stevenson's fan-favorite graphic novel Nimona. Almost a decade letter, Nimona is finally a finished movie -- albeit at Netflix -- and Stevenson says he "can't believe it's happening." The project, which was in development at Blue Sky Studios until Disney bought 20th Century Fox and shuttered the animation house, was reportedly close to done when the sale happened in 2021, but there was no way of completing it under the circumstances. In 2022, Annapurna Pictures announced they had acquired the movie, and would air it on Netflix.

The project stars Chloe Grace Moretz and Riz Ahmed, who had been cast prior to the Blue Sky sale, making most of the key players just as surprised as Stevenson that in an increasingly inhospitable environment for animation, Nimona had managed to come back to life.

"I also can't believe it's happening," Stevenson said. "I think it kind of snuck up on me when so many unexpected and sometimes devastating things happen in the production, I feel like we were all kind of guarding our hearts a little bit. Like, what unexpected curveball is going to hit us next? And now we're all here and it's hitting us all at the same time. It's real. This is really happening. It is a very cool feeling after that wild ride we've been on to finally be at the end of it is... I'm still getting my head around it, honestly, but it's very cool. It's extremely cool."

It's also a reunion of sorts for Stevenson, who previously worked on She-Ra and the Princesses of Power for Netflix from 2018 to 2020. Both series dealt with LGBTQ+ themes and strong female leads, and during Stevenson's interview with ComicBook.com, we asked him what he thought would happen if the two properties got to cross over.

"Oh my God. I don't think the world would survive," Stevenson joked. "I think that there would be a catastrophic...Yeah, that would be a lot of chaos in one place, but I think they'd get along. I think they would definitely burn something down, but they'd get along very well."

You can see the official synopsis for Nimona below.

A Knight is framed for a crime he didn't commit and the only person who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona, a shape-shifting teen who might also be a monster he's sworn to kill. Set in a techno-medieval world unlike anything animation has tackled before, this is a story about the labels we assign to people and the shapeshifter who refuses to be defined by anyone.

Nimona is now available to stream on Netflix.

"This summer is full of amazing movies to see in theaters," Cruise's tweet originally read. "Congratulations, Harrison Ford, on 40 years of Indy and one of the most iconic characters in history. I love a double feature, and it doesn't get more explosive (or more pink) than one with Oppenheimer and Barbie," Cruise wrote on Twitter.

Who is in the Barbie cast?

Barbie will star Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken, as well as Issa Rae as President Barbie, Alexandra Shipp as Writer Barbie, Emma Mackey as Physicist Barbie, Ana Cruz Kayne as Judge Barbie, Ritu Arya as Journalist Barbie, Nicola Coughlan as Diplomat Barbie, Dua Lipa as Mermaid Barbie, Kate McKinnon as Gymnast Barbie, Hari Nef as Doctor Barbie, Sharon Rooney as Lawyer Barbie. What is the Barbie movie about?

In Barbie, after being expelled from Barbieland for being a less-than-perfect doll, Barbie sets off to the real world to find true happiness. Barbie will be directed by Greta Gerwig, with a script from Gerwig and Noah Baumbach. Robbie, who had been rumored to be attached to the project since 2018, will also be producing the project through her LuckyChap banner.

"The first time I read the 'Barbie' script, my reaction was, 'Ah! This is so good. What a shame it will never see the light of day,'" Robbie revealed in an interview earlier this year."'because they are never going to let us make this movie.' But they did."

What Is Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One About?

Tom Cruise is back as Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, which premieres in theaters on July 12th. It's the beginning of the end for the action-packed franchise, as Cruise reteams with longtime collaborator and filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie for more death-defying and breathtaking stunts. Hunt and allies Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames), and Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg) attempt to track down a new weapon with the power to tear the world apart. Actors Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, and Esai Morales join the cast for the latest installment in the Mission: Impossible franchise, which is set to wrap up with Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part Two.

LEGO Ideas Hocus Pocus Set Is About to Put a Spell On You https://comicbook.com/gear/news/lego-ideas-hocus-pocus-set-is-about-to-put-a-spell-on-you/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 04:00:00 +0000 Sean Fallon d0cf6724-3075-4f4d-8889-7a6e2a557f87

Last year's Hocus Pocus 2 brought back Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy as the Sanderson Sisters nearly 30 years after the original film, and it turned to be a massive success for Disney+. That said, it's no surprise that Hocus Pocus 3 is officially in the works. It's also not surprising that LEGO fan Amber Veyt's concept for a Sanderson Sisters' Cottage set breezed through the LEGO Ideas acceptance process and is now on the brink of becoming your next build.

The LEGO Ideas (21341) Disney Hocus Pocus: The Sanderson Sisters' Cottage set will include 2316 pieces and 6 minifigures: Winifred Sanderson, Sarah Sanderson, Mary Sanderson, Max Dennison, Dani Dennison and Allison Watts. There will also be a Thackery Binx figure in cat form.

The cottage opens up to reveal an interior loaded with details from the original Hocus Pocus film, and can be converted into the Sanderson Witch Museum by adding the info-stand, the museum signage, some rope barriers, and a cash register, all of which can be hidden away in secret storage under the stairs. Additional features include a water wheel that makes pink 'smoke' puff from the chimney and a LEGO light brick for the fire under the cauldron.

The Hocus Pocus LEGO set will put a spell on VIPs starting tonight June 30th / July 1st at 9pm PT / 12am ET here at LEGO.com priced at $229.99. The general public will get their chance at the same time and in the same place on July 3rd / 4th. We expect that the VIP allotment will sell out faster than you can say 'amuck' three times, so be ready and waiting at the launch time. If you aren't a LEGO VIP yet, you can sign up here for free. Image of the set are available in the gallery below.

You can keep tabs on the latest news about Hocus Pocus 3 right here. Hopefully, this installment will see the return of some familiar faces that didn't turn up in Hocus Pocus 2. Omri Katz, who played Maxwell "Max" Dennison in the original film, recently noted that they "weren't invited" to be in the sequel.

"We weren't invited to that meeting. So, we don't really know why we weren't invited," Katz said during the panel (via People). "I think the fan base really wanted to see something with us ... I don't know. It's hard to really figure out the decisions that are made regarding what they want to do."

Thora Birch, who played Danielle "Dani" Dennison, added that having original stars return was something that was discussed, but that the process of getting to the sequel was a long one, and sometimes things just don't work out.

"The desire [and] the concept of maybe doing [a sequel] was about 10 years," Birch said. "But then there were numbers of different writers that came on board and different directors, and so the story and the concept and the direction in which they wanted to take, too, kept evolving and changing and growing."

She continued, "I do know that there were, along the way, some concepts and some ideas about ways to bring us back. And for whatever reason, it just didn't work. Some of us were going to be on, some of us weren't. And then it just was a roller coaster ride. What we like to say in the business: we had scheduling conflicts."

New Jonathan Majors Report Details Alleged "Extreme Abuse" Within Previous Relationships https://comicbook.com/movies/news/new-jonathan-majors-report-alleged-extreme-abuse-previous-relationships/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 03:59:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson be6a2810-b017-4b23-abd9-1984148e1c3d

A new report details even more allegations of abuse and misconduct from actor Jonathan Majors, both in personal relationships and on the sets of recent movies. On Thursday night, Rolling Stone published an extensive deep-dive into a near-decade of alleged incidents, including and in addition to Majors being arrested on domestic violence charges earlier this year. The report spoke to more than 40 sources who have known Majors in graduate school at Yale University, in his romantic relationships, and on the sets of his movies. As one source says in the report, "No one is surprised that this is coming out. It always felt like it was a matter of time because his behavior never changed. He's kind of a bad dude, and now it's just catching up with him."

The report alleges, according to over a dozen different sources, that Majors abused two previous romantic partners physically and/or emotionally. Allegedly, one woman endured "really extreme abuse, physically and mentally" while dating Majors, culminating to the point of "him strangling her." There are also allegations of emotional abuse towards a second woman Majors dated, with claims that he was "controlling" over everything from what she ate to who she could interact with. Sources claim that the woman called her and Majors' relationship "emotional torture", and that he would get angry to the point of "needed to hit something or punch a wall or something of that nature."

"She said on a few occasions that he wanted her to believe that he was the oxygen in the room [and] that she could not live without him," a source says of that relationship.

The report also dives into Majors' alleged professional behavior, both acting at Yale's School of Drama and working in recent film projects like Devotion and the upcoming Magazine Dreams. According to the report, Majors allegedly had multiple confrontations and altercations with his Yale classmates while acting, including slapping a classmate while they were play wrestling during rehearsal. Classmates reportedly took their concerns to Yale administration, and even some instructors reportedly saw the incidents firsthand.

A source who worked on the set of 2022's Devotion claims that Majors allegedly made members of the costume department cry on set, saying "It started to become borderline abusive. It seemed like it was some kind of sick pleasure that he took out of -- once those girls cried.... He did it to people who he could tell would be too afraid to stand up for themselves." On the set of Magazine Dreams, which is currently scheduled to be released in December, Majors allegedly physically reacted to two crew members on set, pushing one and "moving in an intimidating manner toward the other while yelling" to the other. Complaints were reportedly filed, but a production source claims that the incident did not involve physical contact or intimidation, and that Majors "was immediately made aware of the complaint and he was mortified that he had made someone feel bad."

These updates come after the domestic violence charges have led to Majors reportedly parting ways with his management Entertainment 360 and PR firm Lede Company, with Entertainment 360 citing "issues of the actor's personal behavior." Majors was also dropped from two upcoming films -- The Man in My Basement and a currently-untitled Otis Redding biopic -- as well as an upcoming ad campaign involving the MLB's Texas Rangers. He was already previously dropped from a recent United States Army ad campaign. At the time of this writing, Majors is still attached to reprise his role of Kang the Conqueror in future installments of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, beginning with the upcoming sophomore season of Loki, which was filmed prior to the domestic violence charge.

Snow White's Gal Gadot Teases "Delicious" Portrayal of Evil Queen https://comicbook.com/movies/news/snow-whites-gal-gadot-teases-delicious-portrayal-of-evil-queen/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 03:40:00 +0000 Nathaniel Brail 357d195a-44a7-493c-b06e-250e28335797

Walt Disney Studios recently released their live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, which starred Halle Bailey and was received pretty well. Now, all focus has pivoted to their next live-action remake, which just so happens to be Snow White. Snow White will star Rachel Zegler as the titular character and Gal Gadot as the Evil Witch. It will be directed by Marc Web (500 Days of Summer, The Amazing Spider-Man) from a script that was written by Greta Gerwig (Barbie, Little Women). Not much is known about the plot of the film, but it has already been revealed that it may not feature the seven dwarfs, and other than that, things have been pretty quiet. That is, until now. In a new interview with Vogue UK, Gadot teased her upcoming villainous role.

"I don't have a preferred type of character. I think it was so much fun to play the Evil Queen," Gadot revealed. "There was something so delicious with this part because it's a fairy tale. It's the first Disney villain. And because it's a musical, I could stretch my performance and make it so much more dramatic and so much more animated, that it was just simply delightful. I enjoyed it, and I changed my voice and I did all these different things. And it was just super fun, and I can't wait to watch it. I can't wait to see how you know how it all turns out."

Disney Exec Comments on Snow White Remake

Back when Snow White was officially revealed to the public, Walt Disney Pictures President of Production Sean Bailey gave the inside scoop on the upcoming live-action remake.

"We were given an incredible opportunity to discover what we wanted to be as a live-action team. We were given a lot of latitude to think about what that was," Bailey said. "We thought if Iron Man and Thor and Captain America are Marvel superheroes, then maybe Alice, Cinderella, Mowgli, and Belle are our superheroes, and Cruella and Maleficent are our supervillains. Maybe if there's a way to reconnect with that affinity for what those characters mean to people in a way that gets the best talent and uses the best technology, that could become something really exciting. It feels very Disney, playing to the competitive advantages of this label."

"Rachel's extraordinary vocal abilities are just the beginning of her gifts," director Marc Webb said of Zegler's casting. "Her strength, intelligence and optimism will become an integral part of rediscovering the joy in this classic Disney fairytale."

Zegler leads Disney's Snow White opposite the Wonder Woman and Red Notice star, who will play the Evil Queen. Webb directs from a script by Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird, Little Women) and Erin Cressida Wilson (Chloe, The Girl on the Train). Stay tuned to ComicBook.com for more updates on the live action Snow White remake as we learn it!

Snow White will hit theaters on March 22, 2024!

Gattaca TV Show Scrapped by Showtime https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/gattaca-tv-show-scrapped-by-showtime/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 03:19:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame a0acaded-03dc-458b-b637-bff63e25663c

Showtime will no longer be moving forward with their planned TV adaptation of Gattaca. The network announced today that they had declined to pick up the series, which was to hail from Homeland producers Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa and Sony Pictures Television. The project was one of four that will no longer be going forward at Showtime, according to a new report at Variety. Seasoned, a series starring Mandy Patinkin that had previously been given a full season order, has been axed, as well as Split and Sweetness.

Development on Gattaca was announced back in March. It was originally announced at the same time Seasoned was ordered. The cancelled projects appear to be casualties of the Paramount+/Showtime app merger.

Earlier this week, Paramount+ also announced that they were removing Fantasy Football, The Game, Ghislaine: Partner in Crime, Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, From Cradle to Stage, Inside Amy Schumer, Queen of the Universe, Snow Day, Star Trek: Prodigy, and Tell Me a Story from the platform, with at least Star Trek and Grease looking for potential new homes.

"The Paramount+ series Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, Star Trek: Prodigy, Queen of the Universe, and The Game have completed their runs on Paramount+ and will not be returning to the service," a Paramount+ spokesperson said on Friday. "We want to extend our thanks to our tremendously talented cast and crew and our producing partners for their passionate work and dedication on these programs, and we wish them all the best on their future endeavors."

The original Gattaca film was released in 1997 with the dystopian film starring Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, along with Jude Law, Alan Arkin and more. Written and directed by Andrew Niccol, the dystopian film was set in a near future where people utilized eugenics to screen their children for genetic defects and thus, created a lower class of people called "in-valids". In the film Hawke's character, Vincent, is an "in-valid" who takes on the identity of a genetically "superior" man, Jerome (Law) so that he can pursue his dream of space flight. The film wasn't a commercial success but was a critical success and was praised for being both intelligent and scientifically provocative. It was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Art Direction. The film has also since gone on to become a cult classic.

The Showtime series is not the first time an adaptation of Gattaca had been attempted. It was previously reported in 2009 that Sony Pictures Television was developing a police procedural take on the film, though that project -- which was to have been written by Gil Grant -- didn't move forward.

Paramount+ Removes Inside Amy Schumer, Many Nickelodeon Shows, and More From Streamer https://comicbook.com/movies/news/paramount-removes-inside-amy-schumer-many-nickelodeon-shows/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 03:16:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 1faa96d6-59d9-42b8-8a22-5e24d6466861

As part of the rollout for Paramount+ with Showtime, Paramount Global has removed a number of shows from the Paramount+ streaming platform, including Inside Amy Schumer, Tell Me A Story, and a handful of Nickelodeon series. Today's departures join Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, Star Trek: Prodigy, and other recent cancellations announced last week. While they are being removed from the streamer, it seems unlikely many of these series will be removed completely from the internet. Yes, there have been plenty of shows and movies cancelled by a number of platforms with an eye toward writing down losses for tax reasons, but between reports that Star Trek and Grease will be shopped around, and the fact that several of these Nick shows have been around a while, it seems unlikely Paramount could claim a total loss on most, if not any, of those series.

While a number of Nickelodeon series have been removed from the platform for now, those projects were apparently part of a normal cycle of projects being swapped in and out of Paramount+, rather than a cancellation or permanent removal. Items being removed permanently include Fantasy Football, The Game, Ghislaine: Partner in Crime, Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, From Cradle to Stage, Inside Amy Schumer, Queen of the Universe, Snow Day, Star Trek: Prodigy, and Tell Me a Story. This list has been updated to reflect changes, as some of the early reporting was not entirely correct.

Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies is a prequel series to the beloved '70s film. The Game is a revival of the 2000s CW/BET series from Black Lightning executive producer Mara Brock Akil, and spun out of her popular series Girlfriends. Queen of the Universe is a singing competition show featuring the most talented drag queens from around the world. It appears that Grease and Trek will be shopped around, while this is the end of the road for Girlfriends and Queen of the Universe. Queen is the only show with a firm removal date, that being June 30. Star Trek: Prodigy is the first kids animated series from Star Trek in years.

Last month, the SAG-AFTRA national board unanimously agreed to send an authorization vote to members with the recommendation that members vote to authorize a strike should one be necessary during the upcoming labor negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). Earlier this month, the members voted, with 97.91 percent of SAG-AFTRA members in favor of a strike authorization ahead of negotiations of the TV/theatrical contracts with nearly 65,000 members casting ballots for a voting percentage of 47.69 percent of eligible voters. The union represents roughly 160,000 people, including film and television actors, journalists, radio personalities, recording artists, singers, voice actors, internet influencers, and other media professionals. The current deal between the union and the AMPTP expires tomorrow at 11:59 p.m. PT.

Speaking with Michael Strahan on Good Morning America, SAG President Fran Drescher told the host that there are some promising signs in the ongoing negotiation with producers. She said that there are still a number of issues where they aren't especially close together, though, and obviously time is running out.

"We do have unprecedented support from the union members where, if we feel like we're not making headway when the contract expires, which is June 30th at 11:59 p.m., we're gonna have to strike," Drescher said.

"You know, in some areas we are, and in some areas we're not," Drescher added. "So we just have to see.

The Writers Guild has been on strike since early May. During that time, the Director's Guild struck a deal, but the Screen Actor's Guild seems to be having more trouble coming to a satisfactory deal with management.

Disney's 100th Anniversary: Studio Re-Releasing 8 Classic Movies in Theaters https://comicbook.com/movies/news/disneys-100th-anniversary-studio-re-releasing-8-classic-movies-in-theaters/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 01:07:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame f91f3540-a972-4a1f-aa62-456d63110203

Disney announced today that they will be relaunching eight beloved movies in theaters in the coming weeks, as part of their year-long 100th anniversary celebration. Each of the eight movies will have a 2-week re-release window, beginning on July 7 and ending in October. For some of these movies, it will be the first large-scale theatrical re-release. For years, prior to the rise of the home video market, Disney used to consistently rotate their animated classics and some of their other fan-favorites in and out of theaters pretty regularly -- and now that they are streaming everything on Disney+, it's distinctly possible we could see them returning to the "Disney vault" model on some titles to create artificial scarcity.

Launching on July 7 will be Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl. That title will be followed by Toy Story, Frozen, Beauty and the Beast, The Incredibles, Coco, The Lion King and Moana. Since all of the titles were released in the 1990s and beyond, it would not be surprising to find out Disney has plans for more titles starting in October and running through the rest of the year.

Given the anemic box office this year, it's entirely possible that some of these movies could perform better at the box office than their 2023 competition. It would be kind of wild, for instance, to see The Incredibles or Toy Story opening at #1 or #2 at the box office later this summer.

No word yet on what theaters will be participating in the re-releases. Expect an official announcement about that in the coming weeks.

Recently, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment announced they would debut a new platinum-style series of Disney100 4K UHD steelbooks and Blu-ray slipcovers. The Disney100 editions -- available exclusively at Best Buy and Walmart, respectively -- highlight some of the most treasured features from each studio's library, including The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Frozen, Encanto, and Pixar's Toy Story, Coco, and Cars.

The Disney100 Edition 4K steelbooks and Blu-ray slipcovers join the Disney100 Platinum Celebration Collection launched on shopDisney, featuring a platinum version of the iconic Mickey Mouse ear hat, a series of Disney "What If" comic book variant covers from Marvel Comics, and the Disney100 Funko Pop collection, celebrating iconic moments from such films as Walt Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, and Fantasia. The year's celebration officially kicks off with the Disney100 Anniversary Celebration at California's Disneyland Resort on January 27th.

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse Producers Address Sequel's Release Date (Exclusive) https://comicbook.com/movies/news/spider-man-beyond-the-spider-verse-producers-release-date-exclusive/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 00:53:00 +0000 Nathaniel Brail 59573ab3-898b-40fa-8a3f-4443568e11b8

Sony Pictures Animation recently released the highly anticipated sequel to their award-winning animated movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and it has been well received so far. Initial reviews for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse were some of the most positive of the year, and the film has been killing it at the box office. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse ends on a massive cliffhanger, and fans are excited to see the conclusion next year. There have been some reports that Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse could be delayed, and the studio and producer Amy Pascal have already commented on it. Now, producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller have opened up about those reports and given an answer on whether Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will be delayed. In a new interview with ComicBook.com's Chris Killian in promotion for the new season of Apple TV+'s The After Party, Lord and Miller gave an answer to the question of whether Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will be delayed.

"I would say that just like we're going to take the time necessary to make Beyond the Spider-Verse great," Lord said before Miller concluded their answer. "And we won't back into a release date that doesn't fit."

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse May Get Delayed

According to a fairly recent report, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse could wind up getting delayed due to a very important reason. In the report, artist who is working on the film claims that there is now way that the sequel could hit theaters in 2024.

"They've announced that Beyond the Spider-Verse will be released in March of next year. I've seen people say, 'Oh, they probably worked on it at the same time.' There's no way that movie's coming out then. There's been progress on the pre-production side of things. But as far as the production side goes, the only progress that's been made on the third one is any exploration or tests that were done before the movie was split into two parts. Everyone's been fully focused on Across the Spider-Verse and barely crossing the finish line. And now it's like, Oh, yeah, now we have to do the other one."

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is in theaters now while Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is expected to hit theaters on March 29, 2024.

Evil Dead Rise Director Teases Sequel Discussions https://comicbook.com/movies/news/evil-dead-rise-sequel-tease-director-lee-cronin/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 00:53:00 +0000 Charlie Ridgely d5360a45-3151-4590-8252-088665426d89

The Evil Dead franchise is alive and well, as proven by the success of its latest installment, Evil Dead Rise. The new film, a continuation of the world created by Sam Raimi, hit theaters back in April and went on to gross more than $146 million on a modest budget. It was a winner for Warner Bros. theatrically, and that has already led fans to wonder if another sequel will be on the way soon, or if they'll have to wait another decade for a follow-up.

Lee Cronin, who directed Evil Dead Rise, has mixed feelings about taking on a direct sequel. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Cronin shared his thoughts on making another Evil Dead.

"Look, [another Evil Dead] is always a possibility," Cronin said. "I had a great experience making this movie with some really great people, and in success, that makes you look at what is possible next. When I was announced as the person to do this movie, it's not that I wasn't the obvious choice. There were some people that would've known who I was from my previous film, horror aficionados and people that liked that movie. But I came from a bit of a different place. There is a part of me that's interested in planting a very different flag within genre. This film has a lot of intensity, it has a lot of its own energy and maybe it would be gratifying for me to just go and do something else."

Cronin went on to say that, while he'd like to do something different, he also feels tempted to go back to the world of Evil Dead and follow Rise with another story.

"But equally, it's also very tempting to look back into this world, particularly the characters that have survived and the new lore that I've brought into play," he continued. "So it's certainly something to be discussed. It's something that we discussed on set, because when you're making a movie in a franchise, you're always talking about what's next and what's possible. So I suppose I'm in the lucky position where I have some choice, whereas in the past, when you're trying to crawl up the ladder to be a filmmaker with any focus on you, you're just going after the thing that you're desperate to get made. So it's nice right now.

"You talked about things in a drawer, and I put down other original ideas and original screenplays to go and make Evil Dead Rise. So it's nice to be in this moment where I'm able to look around and think about what's next. Sometimes, it's about the relay. So I love all my children equally, and let's see who's the quickest to the start line, so we can start the race again with another movie."

Where to Watch Evil Dead Rise

Evil Dead Rise had a great run at the box office just a couple of months ago, but the acclaimed franchise sequel is already available to stream.

The film was added to the Max streaming lineup this month, so anyone with a Max subscription can watch it right now, at no extra cost. If you don't have Max you can sign up here.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny: Does Karen Allen Return as Marion Ravenwood? https://comicbook.com/movies/news/indiana-jones-and-the-dial-of-destiny-does-karen-allen-return-as-marion-ravenwood-spoilers-cameo/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 00:00:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 48f08472-8aaf-4c39-ad5c-04354cb3c2a7

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny was released in theaters tonight and marks the fifth time Harrison Ford has played the titular hero. The movie also featured John Rhys-Davies as Sallah, the character he played in both Raiders of the Lost Ark and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Many have wondered if the film would also feature Karen Allen as Marion Ravenswood, a role she played in Raiders of the Lost Ark in addition to Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. There have been rumors that she would be making an appearance in the new film, but there was never an official announcement. Warning: Spoilers Ahead! Now that the movie has had its preview night, we can confirm that Karen Allen is in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

At the beginning of the film, it's revealed that Marion has left Indy and filed for divorce. Later, it's revealed that their son Mutt, who was played by Shia LaBeouf in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, died in the Vietnam War after enlisting. The pain of the loss caused the couple to grow apart. However, at the end of the film, Indy returns home after his latest adventure and wakes up to discover Marion has returned. The two have a heartwarming reunion reminiscent of a famous scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark, and the film ends with them getting back together.

Will Harrison Ford Retire?

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny may be Ford's last time playing Indiana Jones, but the actor has no plans to retire. "I don't [plan to retire]. I don't do well when I don't have work. I love to work. I love to feel useful. It's my jones. I want to be helpful," Ford said while appearing on Who's Talking to Chris Wallace?

It's no surprise to hear Ford doesn't plan on retiring considering he's taking over as Thaddeus Ross in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actor is currently filming Captain America: Brave New World, and while many suspect he will be turning into Red Hulk during the film, Ford claims he doesn't know anything about it.

"What is the Red Hulk?" Ford asked ComicBook.com during a recent chat in support of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. After a brief explainer, Ford turned it around on his co-star Phoebe Waller-Bridge, blaming her for not telling him about the character's history. When asked if fans can expect to see Red Hulk's first live-action appearance in Brave New World, Ford added that "it may or it may not" be included.

What Is Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny About?

The iconic Harrison Ford returns for one last adventure when Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny premieres in theaters on June 30th.

Chloƫ Grace Moretz Compares Nimona Performance to "Throwing Spaghetti at the Wall" https://comicbook.com/movies/news/chloe-grace-moretz-nimona-performance-netflix-interview/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 23:59:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson cf469430-95b0-4d67-b400-a1ec1f80997c

Nimona arrives on Netflix this weekend, finally adapting the world of ND Stevenson's beloved graphic novel into film. At the center of Nimona is its titular character, a shape-shifting teenager who takes her world on a wild adventure. Chlo? Grace Moretz, who has been attached to the project for several years, manages to uniquely embody the unique spirit of Nimona, and now we know how she arrived at that performance. While speaking to ComicBook.com about Nimona, Moretz detailed the creative process of bringing her character to life -- including worrying that her improvisation and experimenting would be coming across as psychopathic.

"A little bit of the time it felt like black box theater, where you're just playing around and throwing spaghetti at the wall and seeing what sticks. And Nick and Troy are such incredible directors. And from the get go, the first things they said were, "We want you to go big, go small, go left, go right, do things that we don't even expect." They gave me the gift of saying, you're free to improv, you're free to expand this space and go for whatever you feel. There were times that I was sweating in there going, "Am I being a total and complete just psychopath right now?" And it wasn't until I saw the finished product that I was like, "Oh my God, thank God it works." I was like, "It works. Okay. Okay. Phew."

"I just can't wait for people to sit, to meet Nimona, and what Chloe has done with Nimona," Ahmed told ComicBook.com in a separate interview. "It's just next level. We all know she's an amazing actor, but I just think this incredibly kind of sprightly, mischievous, hilarious character that she has brought to life. I honestly think is just kind of a classic personality, a classic character, and I just can't wait for people to meet her."

Nimona Star Eugene Lee Yang Wants to Join Avatar: The Last Airbender (Exclusive) https://comicbook.com/anime/news/nimona-star-eugene-lee-yang-join-avatar-the-last-airbender-exclusive/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 23:16:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson ba5ca8e2-99db-4c8a-8e3d-97acdfa3a292

This week will bring the arrival of Nimona, the long-awaited film adaptation of ND Stevenson's graphic novel of the same name. Nimona enlists an all-star voice cast to bring its unconventional fantasy story to life, including actor and The Try Guys member Eugene Lee Yang. After appearances in Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Star Wars: Visions, Nimona marks Yang's biggest role yet -- and apparently, he has his sights set on another major franchise. While speaking to ComicBook.com about his role as Ambrosius Goldenloin in Nimona, Yang revealed that his dream is to join the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender in some way. This comes after Yang went viral in 2020 for cosplaying as several of the Avatar characters.

"Avatar The Last Airbender, full stop," Yang explained in our video, which you can check out above. "They know. We're talking a little bit, but talk about some queer world building. You got to get some queer people in it. That's pie in the sky for me. Pie in the sky."

Will There Be an Avatar: The Last Airbender Sequel?

This comes as the Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise is going strong, with a live-action adaptation set to hit Netflix in 2024. The future of the saga also includes a new animated film and a new animated series about the Earth Avatar.

"I'm so fortunate to have the opportunity to work on this project and the fact that it's Goldenloin was hugely important," Yang said elsewhere in our interview. "And I think that they saw that I had a lot of experience personally that is reflected in the themes that Goldenloin's journey inhabits, duty versus love. That's the story of my life. So I think that that was something that I jumped at the chance to be able to lend that to his perspective."

The Flash's Kiersey Clemons Reflects on Being Attached to DC Movie for Years, "I Felt Dismissed" https://comicbook.com/movies/news/the-flash-kiersey-clemons-attached-dc-movie-years-dismissed/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 22:26:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson b6ad7959-683d-4187-b058-35ee924ba2e2

The Flash finally sped into theaters earlier this month, after nearly a decade of being in the works. The DC blockbuster underwent a number of creative overhauls over the years, but what didn't change was the casting of Ezra Miller as Barry Allen / The Flash and Kiersey Clemons as Iris West. Clemons was first cast as Iris in 2016, and eventually got to portray the character onscreen in 2021's Zack Snyder's Justice League, and eventually The Flash. In a recent interview with Nylon, Clemons reflected on the surreal experience of being attached to The Flash for so long, and the project eventually becoming a reality.

"I was freaked out because at one point, there were rumors going around online that I was getting recast, which is humiliating," Clemons explained. "It was more embarrassing and hurtful than getting cut out of Justice League, which I was able to understand more than the rumors of being recast. They had to cut the movie down; that's how it goes. With The Flash, I was so young and was so excited, and the director that I was supposed to be on with was gone. And so, I felt dismissed and replaceable."

"Now that the movie's out, I feel like for the last nearly 10 years, I've just been smiling and giving so much grace," Clemons added elsewhere in the interview. "I think it was to protect my peace of mind. Now I can finally say and admit this whole thing made me cry more than it made me smile. I think I only smiled over this thing at the premiere." She jokes that she tells people that the whole film has been cursed. "I mean, from my perspective, someone was over there mixing potions. Something was happening."

What is The Flash movie about?

The Flash sped into theaters on June 16th, reshaping the DC Multiverse with the help of familiar faces and brand-new heroes. Barry Allen (Ezra Miller) ventures to the past to change history, resulting in massive repercussions for the future. Forced to team up with another version of Barry, the mysterious Kryptonian known as Supergirl (Sasha Calle), and the iconic Batman (Michael Keaton), the Scarlet Speedster is forced to reckon with his mistakes and save a doomed reality. The Flash is directed by Andy Muschietti, written by Christina Hodson from a story by Joby Harold, and produced by Barbara Muschietti.

"The studio wanted to tell the story and, of course, I agreed that it was a great story," Muschietti recently told reporters. "It's basically time travel that includes the origin story, which is basically the mother and the father, and their accident. All of those elements were sort of attached to this thing. That's why in my opinion, it was like you're killing several birds with the same stone in a way. And of course time travel is always a good idea. Batman is always a good idea."

"This is more like a suspense. It is a buildup to that moment, which makes probably a more emotional experience, because you understand everything that's happening," Muschietti added. "In Flashpoint, it's more like Jacob's Ladder, 'What is happening? Mom, I don't have powers. My mom is alive.'"

The Flash is now playing exclusively in theaters.

The Flash: Kiersey Clemons Says Recast Rumors Were "More Embarrassing" Than Getting Cut From Justice League https://comicbook.com/movies/news/the-flash-kiersey-clemons-recast-rumors-embarrassing-cut-justice-league/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 22:00:00 +0000 Nathaniel Brail 43371a7c-e1ea-448f-b6d2-60d73c256b42

DC Studios has finally released the highly anticipated The Flash movie, and it officially resets the DC Extended Universe to make room for James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Universe. Initial reviews for The Flash were pretty good, but as time went on, they turned mixed to negative, and even the CinemaScore is one of the lowest in the franchise. The Flash's box office has been pretty rough, with its opening weekend falling short of expectations and getting worse in the weeks since its release. Ezra Miller and Kiersey Clemons both return as The Flash and Iris West, respectively, after appearing in Zack Snyder's Justice League, but it seems that Clemons has a lot to say about her experience with the studios. Clemons was originally cut from the theatrical cut of Justice League until Snyder got to finish up his own cut of the film, and there was a time that the actress was rumored to be recast in the solo The Flash movie. In a new interview with Nylon, Clemons revealed why she signed up for The Flash and that the recast rumors were more embarrassing than being cut from Justice League.

"I specifically wanted to do The Flash because I felt safe and respected being led by Rick in such a big world," Clemons recalled. "When I read with Ezra... In the audition, we're sitting on a rooftop taking in a sunset. It was this dance where at the end, I just laid my head on Ezra's shoulder. At the same time they were going to lean their head, and it was this moment where all of us in the room were like, 'Oh, wow, this is magical. Make this Iris West and Barry Allen.'"

She continued, "I was freaked out because at one point, there were rumors going around online that I was getting recast, which is humiliating. It was more embarrassing and hurtful than getting cut out of Justice League, which I was able to understand more than the rumors of being recast. They had to cut the movie down; that's how it goes. With The Flash, I was so young and was so excited, and the director that I was supposed to be on with was gone. And so, I felt dismissed and replaceable."

What is The Flash about?

Warner Bros. describes the film as follows: "Worlds collide in "The Flash" when Barry uses his superpowers to travel back in time in order to change the events of the past. But when his attempt to save his family inadvertently alters the future, Barry becomes trapped in a reality in which General Zod has returned, threatening annihilation, and there are no Super Heroes to turn to. That is, unless Barry can coax a very different Batman out of retirement and rescue an imprisoned Kryptonian... albeit not the one he's looking for. Ultimately, to save the world that he is in and return to the future that he knows, Barry's only hope is to race for his life. But will making the ultimate sacrifice be enough to reset the universe?"

The Flash is exclusively in theaters now!
