SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers have officially announced plans to extend their current contract until July 12th, delaying a possible actors strike. The news was broken on late Friday night, with both parties confirming that the decision was made to allow bargaining to continue. Prior to this, the SAG-AFTRA contract was initially set to expire on Friday, June 30th at midnight PT, with many wondering if a strike would occur soon after. This decision mirrors what both parties did during 2014 and 2017 talks, in part to account for the Fourth of July holiday. In those previous instances, a new deal was reached between SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP by early July, but it is unclear at this point if that will happen this time around, especially as the Writers Guild of America has been on strike for several months now.

"The agreements, which were set to expire at 11:59 p.m. PT tonight, will now expire on July 12, at 11:59 pm PT," SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP said in a joint statement. "The parties will continue to negotiate under a mutually agreed upon media blackout. Neither organization will comment to the media about the negotiations during the extension."

Will the Actors Go on Strike?

Earlier this month, an open letter from more than 1,000 high-profile actors and SAG members was released, indicating that they are prepared to strike if the situation requires it. The actors on the letter include Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Amy Schumer, and even union president Fran Drescher.

"We want you to know that we would rather go on strike than compromise on these fundamental points, and we believe that, if we settle for a less than transformative deal, the future of our union and our craft will be undermined, and SAG-AFTRA will enter the next negotiation with drastically reduced leverage," the letter reads in part.

Who Is the President of SAG-AFTRA?

Drescher was elected the president of SAG-AFTRA in September of 2021. She recently went on to Good Morning America to provide an update about the negotiations.

"We do have unprecedented support from the union members where, if we feel like we're not making headway when the contract expires, which is June 30th at 11:59 p.m., we're gonna have to strike," Drescher said. "You know, in some areas we are, and in some areas we're not. So we just have to see. I mean, in earnest, it would be great if we can walk away with a deal that we want. And at the end of the day, you know, we're living in a time that's very different from the last few decades when the foundation of the contract was forged. It's the digital age now and the age of streaming, and it's a whole different business model. So it really begs that we stand firm and hold strong and do right by the members in this industry and honor the massive contribution that they make. So I'm really in it to win it on behalf of our 180,000 members. And we stand by the Writers Guild, too."

Secret Invasion: Samuel L. Jackson Says Marvel Wasn't Afraid to Explore Topic of Racism https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/secret-invasion-samuel-l-jackson-marvel-wasnt-afraid-explore-racism/ Sat, 01 Jul 2023 02:17:00 +0000 Nathaniel Brail cf2c1553-845b-4d44-90ac-e8fb705f46e3

Marvel Studios is hard at work developing their Phase 5 lineup of projects that will be building towards the epic conclusion of The Multiverse Saga in Phase 6, and fans are really excited for what's next. The most recent Marvel Studios project to be released is the Samuel L. Jackson-led Secret Invasion, and it has already aired two very surprising episodes, with one concluding in a major Marvel Cinematic Universe death. Initial reactions for Secret Invasion have been mixed, and it's looking like the series will be more of a slow burn. One of the highlights of the series has to be Jackson's triumphant return as Nick Fury, and he's even better than before. Jackson is currently doing press for the series, where he's revealing that Marvel Studios wasn't afraid to do one very specific thing with the series. In a new interview with Variety, Jackson says that Marvel wasn't afraid to let Secret Invasion explore the topic of racism.

"[What it's like for Fury to have] that much power as a Black man, and how they can be diminished at any moment by someone else just saying a specific thing or changing the trajectory of one's career path because of it," Jackson told the trade in a new interview. "Rhodey and Fury have risen to this place where we have a certain amount of power, even though we're better than the people who have power, we still got to suppress ourselves in a specific way. And Marvel's not afraid to let us explore that."

Jackson went on to reveal that Secret Invasion used things that were real to him to develop Nick Fury's backstory, "I used to take the train every summer from Chattanooga, Tennessee to Washington, D.C. I couldn't go in a dining car because it's segregated. When they put me on the train, they gave me a shoebox with food in it, then I ate that food. We used things that were real for me as a person to give Nick Fury the kind of history that he has, to inform the story in a real way about, you know, how he wasn't always this [powerful], or he does look at America in another kind of way."

"It wasn't on the page. It was him telling us a story. He's very connected to Nick Fury in a way that no writer ever could be." Secret Invasion director Ali Selim added about Jackson/Fury's story.

What is Secret Invasion about?

Secret Invasion centers around MCU veterans Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Talos (Mendelsohn) as they deal with an invasion of shape-shifting Skrulls who have infiltrated all aspects of life on Earth. Other MCU veterans will include Smulders as Maria Hill, Don Cheadle as James "Rhodey" Rhodes / War Machine, and Martin Freeman as Everett K. Ross. New cast members will include Emilia Clarke, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Olivia Colman, Carmen Ejogo, Christopher McDonald, Dermot Mulroney, and Killian Scott. The series will be written and executive produced by Kyle Bradstreet, and directed by Thomas Bezucha and Ali Selim.

The first two episodes of Secret Invasion are currently streaming on Disney+.

Freeform Cancels Single Drunk Female and The Watchful Eye https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/freeform-cancels-fan-favorite-series-single-drunk-female-the-watchful-eye/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 22:13:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson d6abbd59-c27b-4e12-9c66-6d2d24acd06f

Two recent hits on Freeform are coming to an end. On Friday, it was announced that the network has canceled live-action series Single Drunk Female and The Watchful Eye. Single Drunk Female aired on Freeform for two seasons, while The Watchful Eye had aired on the network for only one season. This means that Freeform's original titles now include the final season of Grown-ish, as well as existing dramas Good Trouble, Cruel Summer, and While You Were Breeding, and the upcoming animated comedy Praise Petey.

What Is Single Drunk Female About?

Single Drunk Female follows 20-something alcoholic Samantha Fink (Sofia Black-D'Elia) who, after a public flame-out at a New York media company, is forced to seize the only chance she has to sober up and avoid jail time: moving back home with her overbearing mother, Carol (Ally Sheedy). Back in Greater Boston, Samantha sets out on a path to move past her worst self and figure out her best self. Kinda. Single Drunk Female also stars Rebecca Henderson, Sasha Comp?re, Lily Mae Harrington and Garrick Bernard.

"This season, especially, we really found a groove, tonally and with the greater cast," Black-D'Elia told Collider in an interview earlier this year. "It feels more like an ensemble this season. And so, I'm excited, not just for Sam, if we got to go again, but for everybody because I think all of those dynamics have come to a really interesting point, by the end of the second season."

What Is The Watchful Eye About?

The Watchful Eye follows Elena Santos, a young woman with a complicated past, maneuvering her way into working as a live-in nanny for an affluent family in Manhattan. She quickly learns that everyone in the mysterious building has deadly secrets and ulterior motives. What they don't know, however, is that Elena has some shocking secrets of her own. The Watchful Eye stars Mariel Molino, Warren Christie, Kelly Bishop, Jon-Michael Ecker, Amy Acker, and Aliyah Royale.

"We're gonna get to know some of our other characters in the world," Fox explained in an interview with Deadline. "This world gets a little bit bigger with each episode and a little bit richer and more complex. I think we're going to learn a lot more about the history of the building. There is a puzzle piece put in place with each episode. Part of what the viewer should be figuring out in the first few episodes is, 'Wait, what are we trying to solve for here?' There's a whodunit, and there's a whydunit. There's the supernatural component too. One of my really favorite things about it is that there's sort of no way to prove that it's not happening, but when something is happening, just in your head, it can make you think, like, 'Am I losing my grip on reality? Is there something in this building that's making me see things?' It's yet another test for Elena."

Sly Trailer: Netflix Debuts New Sylvester Stallone Documentary https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/sly-trailer-netflix-sylvester-stallone-documentary-teaser/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 21:06:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw b501c481-17d9-4c65-a015-39995adcbf9c

Netflix has released the trailer for Sly, the Sylvester Stallone documentary. This documentary is narrated by Stallone himself, teasing a rare unflinching look at a life and a career and what one may have cost the other.

"Do I have regrets? Hell yeah, I have regrets!" Stallone is heard saying as the trailer opens, framing the grim theme of this documentary. "What is healthier? To live under the illusion that you could have been great, or actually have an opportunity to be great and then you blow it and you realize you're a failure?"

Synopsis: For nearly 50 years Sylvester Stallone has entertained millions with iconic characters and blockbuster franchises, from Rocky to Rambo to The Expendables. This retrospective documentary offers an intimate look at the Oscar-nominated actor-writer-director-producer, paralleling his inspirational underdog story with the indelible characters he has brought to life.

As the actual teaser for Sly unfolds we get a sizzle reel of Stallone footage from both films, news broadcasts, home movies and previously-unseen footage, and interviews. Throughout the footage Sly continues to narrate, saying the following:

"If you're ever on a train: wham, wham! And that's what you're life is: Whoom! Whipping by, it's gone. Filmmaking, it comes at a great price. There's no time for anything else. Nothing inspires you than taking your history, balling it up, and [basketball shot motion] swoosh!"

The teaser does just that: tease some of the darker and more ominous experiences that Sylvester Stallone had as a world-famous star - and the implied personal cost to his family.

While it may have never cost him too much publicly, Sylvester Stallone has certainly had his fair share of private tragedies, controversies, and challenges. The filmmaker has been married three times (including a second marriage to actress Brigitte Nielsen) and fathered five children (two boys from his first marriage; three daughters from his third). His eldest son Sage died of heart disease in 2012, the same year his half-sister Toni Ann Filiti died of lung cancer; Stallone's youngest son Seargeoh was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Syndrome as a child. His marriage to his third wife Jennifer Flavin has its own on-again, off-again turbulence - with Flavin filing for divorce as recently as 2022 before the couple reconciled.

(Photo: Netflix)

Stallone has also had an infamous struggle with physical injuries in the decades of trying to be a macho action icon (Rambo, Rocky). The early days of being a badass doing his own stunts left Stallone in intensive care several times - including the infamous Rocky IV story of Dolph Lundgren punching him sold hard in the chest it literally nearly killed him and breaking his neck while filming The Expendables. There are also several accusations of sexual assault Stallone has faced over the years, including the accusations leveled at him by Filiti, and those of a teenage accuser from the 1980s. His political allegiances have also sparked controversy on both sides, as he has often floated between supporting Republican figures and passionately adhering to views like strict gun control.

As always, it's uncertain just how deeply Netflix's Sly will get into these less flattering aspects of a celebrity figure's life - but it'll be interesting to find out.

Sly will premiere on Netflix in November.

Dune: The Sisterhood Series Loses Game of Thrones Star as Cast Shuffles Again https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/dune-the-sisterhood-series-game-of-thrones-star-cast/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 20:58:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson e057327c-8c4a-4111-bfa8-0e52ca376724

The Dune spinoff television series has undergone yet another major change. On Friday, a report revealed that The Crown star Olivia Williams and The Witcher's Jodhi May have joined the series, which is currently operating under the working title of Dune: The Sisterhood. Williams will be portraying the role of Tula Harkonnen, after Shirley Henderson stepped away from the part in February of this year. May, meanwhile, will replacing Game of Thrones and Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi star Indira Varma, who was cast as Empress Natalya, but has reportedly stepped away from the part due to a scheduling conflict.

What Is Happening with Dune: The Sisterhood?

Back in February, reports indicated that the live-action series had lost Henderson, as well as the director of the first two episodes, Johan Renck. The series has been expected to undergo a hiatus amid these changes, with reports at the time indicating that the delay could be up to seven months. These exits occurred after the exit of showrunner Diane Ademu-John, who left the series right before it began production in late November, which reportedly led to major rewrites. According to reports, Renck's directing style also did not line up with Max's vision for the show, and was seen as a "departure" from the style of Denis Villeneuve's films.

"As Dune: The Sisterhood (wt) has entered a pre-scheduled hiatus, there are some creative changes being made to the production in an effort to create the best series possible and stay true to the source material," an HBO Max spokesperson said in a statement. "Johan Renck has completed his work on the series and a new director will be brought on; through mutual agreement, Johan is moving on to pursue other projects. Additionally, Shirley Henderson will be exiting the series and will no longer be playing Tula Harkonnen."

What Is Dune: The Sisterhood About?

Dune: The Sisterhood has been previously described as being told through the eyes of a mysterious order of women known as the Bene Gesserit. Given extraordinary abilities by their mastery of the body and the mind, the Bene Gesserit expertly weave through the feudal politics and intrigue of The Imperium, pursuing plans of their own that will ultimately lead them to the enigmatic planet Arrakis, known to its inhabitants as Dune. Members of the cast will also include Emily Watson as Valya Harkonnen; Indira Varma as Empress Natalya; Sarah-Sofie Boussnina as Princess Ynez; Shalom Brune Franklin as Mikaela; Faoileann Cunningham as Sister Jen; Aoife Hinds as Sister Emeline; Chloe Lea as Lila; Travis Fimmel as Desmond Hart; Mark Strong as Emperor Javicco Corrino; Jade Anouka as Sister Theodosia; Chris Mason as Keiran Atreides.

"Oh, that is carrying on and I'm not allowed to talk about it very much," Spaihts previously said during an interview with The Playlist. "But that effort is alive and well. I ended up getting moved off of it to work, not just on Dune: Part Two, but to investigate other cinematic prospects in the Dune universe, which we are still talking about and which, again, I'm not allowed to say very much about. But it is a very rich world in which to play, and I think it is ripe with opportunities for storytelling in every direction. They're well down the road, but I honestly don't know the details of the timing."

Gollum Developer Daedalic Entertainment Halts Development on New Lord of the Rings Game https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/gollum-daedalic-entertainment-new-lord-of-the-rings-game-halts-development/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 17:27:00 +0000 Tanner Dedmon ca851cde-e04f-4b17-ada0-69bc0bf8e4e7

Daedalic Entertainment, the developer of the much maligned The Lord of the Rings: Gollum game, is no longer going to be developing games at all. Instead, the company owned by Nacon will now shift its focus to publishing games. That means that development on the new Lord of the Rings game the company was working on after Gollum has been halted, though it's unclear right now what the fate of that game looks like beyond today's news.

News of Daedalic's new plans came from statements provided to GamesWirtschaft which said Daedalic will focus on publishing games moving forward with "eight promising releases" on the horizon. Daedalic has developed numerous games over the years with the most recent being Gollum, A Year of Rain, and State of Mind with just as many published over the years, too.

In the statements provided to GamesWirtschaft, the studio called this a "difficult turning point" but also described the transition as "a new beginning in the long history of Daedalic Entertainment." That change will also affect some positions within the company. Of the more than 90 employees at Daedalic, 25 will be affected.

"We value each and every member of our team and it is important to us that the transition goes as smoothly as possible," Daedalic said. "Therefore, we will support our former employees in finding new opportunities within our network."

To say that Gollum did not meet expectations would be an understatement. After getting lambasted due to bugs, finicky mechanics, and downgraded graphics from what was shown off before to what got released, the game went as low as a 1.1 user score on Metacritic. Those user scores can sometimes be fudged but sensationalize and passionate reviews, but whether you put stock in that one or the critic score, the latter was hardly any better.

Daedalic issued an apology to Gollum players almost immediately after the game released and committed to updates and fixes for the game's problems moving forward, though it's unclear what plans for that look like now that Daedalic is shifting to publishing games instead. As mentioned previously, it's also unclear what the future of the other in-development Lord of the Rings game looks like now that work on it has been paused.

Good Omens Season 2 Poster Released by Prime Video https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/good-omens-season-2-poster-prime-video-terry-pratchett-neil-gaiman/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 16:18:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 319330ef-70ab-48bf-b56f-39ef9b579bcb

Prime Video dropped a new poster for Good Omens Season 2. The image shows off David Tennant and Michael Sheen as the beloved Crowley and Aziraphale. Prime Video knows fans have been awaiting this moment for a while. Neil Gaiman working with a Terry Pratchett novel sounds like a dream come true for a lot of viewers. The comedy series is poised to take turn things up a notch higher in Season 2. Check out the awesome poster featuring Tennant and Sheen down below.

Good Omens has a tight synopsis as Season 2 gets rolling: "This fantasy series sees fussy angel Aziraphale and loose-living demon Crowley team up to form an unlikely duo. The two have become overly fond of life on Earth, and they are forced into forming an alliance in an attempt to stop the approaching Armageddon. To do that, they have to find the missing Antichrist, an 11-year-old boy who is unaware that he is meant to bring the end of days upon humanity."

What's Coming Up In Good Omens Season 2?

good-omens.jpg

Good Omens Season 2 is exploring some storylines that go beyond the scope of the original source material. The story really sheds a light on the friendship between Aziraphale and Crowley. Now, one wouldn't expect a temperamental angel and a demon to strike up a bond. But, it is compelling. The Beginning serves as our origin story, and Aziraphale and Crowley are just living down here with us normal folks.

"The return of Good Omens is great news for me, personally," Tennant said in the press release. "As I get to work with Michael again, and I get to say Neil's wonderful words once more. It's probably less good for the universe as it almost certainly means there will be some fresh existential threat to its existence to deal with, but, you know - swings and roundabouts."

"Taking Good Omens to my home country of Scotland to film a second season is an exciting dream come true for me. And with Michael Sheen and David Tennant returning as Aziraphale and Crowley, we really have an angel and a demon on our side," Mackinnon said.

The Lasting Impact of Good Omens

Terry Pratchett remains a favorite for people all over the world. Folks just can't get enough of these stories. It's really inspiring to see all the love for the author's work over the years. The people in charge of Good Omens are aware of how precious these books and characters are to so many viewers. They intend to make good on this promise.

"It's thirty-one years since Good Omens was published, which means it's thirty-two years since Terry Pratchett and I lay in our respective beds in a Seattle hotel room at a World Fantasy Convention, and plotted the sequel," Gaiman said. "I got to use bits of the sequel in Good Omens -- that's where our angels came from. Terry's not here any longer, but when he was, we had talked about what we wanted to do with Good Omens, and where the story went next."

John Mulaney Reveals Awkward Celebrity Rejections While at Saturday Night Live https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/john-mulaney-saturday-night-live-awkward-celebrity-rejections/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 15:24:00 +0000 Timothy Adams d6b3bbe0-b950-4c57-a160-b4355f8fc5d5

John Mulaney dishes on some of the celebrities that rejected his joke submissions while a writer on Saturday Night Live. The Emmy Award-winning writer and comedian made a name for himself on Saturday Night Live from 2008 to 2013 and is now hitting it big with several stand-up routines and specials, just like his most recent Netflix special, Baby J, which is what lands Mulaney as a guest on the Hot Ones YouTube show. Coincidentally, Mulaney's appearance is also the 300th episode of Hot Ones, and during the discussion host Sean Evans broached the topic of the worst rejection Mulaney ever got from an SNL host during a pitch meeting.

"No need to name names, but what's the worst reaction you ever recall getting from an SNL celebrity host to a sketch that you pitched them in?" Hot Ones host Sean Evans asked John Mulaney. Though he was told he didn't have to name names, Mulaney went on to list Josh Brolin and Mick Jagger, while also giving examples.

"Josh Brolin went, 'Well this isn't funny,' as I was writing something and I started to walk him through it," the comedian said. "It was so matter-of-fact I wouldn't even call it the worst. I found it completely valuable. And it was early enough on Tuesday night that I didn't proceed with it."

"I remember we had a joke when Mick Jagger hosted that was, "Hey everyone. I'm Mick Jagger, so mothers lock up your daughters, and daughters lock up your mothers,'" he said. "And he listened and he went, 'No, I don't like that.'" Mulaney also said he made Seth Meyers read the joke to Jagger so he wouldn't have to bear the brunt of the feedback.

Fans Worry that Saturday Night Live Has Been Canceled

Because of the lapse in new Saturday Night Live episodes, fans have begun wondering if the beloved NBC sketch comedy show has been canceled. Saturday Night Live has not cancelled--not technically, at least. While the few remaining episodes of the show's 48th season were cancelled because of the ongoing writers' strike, it's fully expected the NBC mainstay will return for Season 49 later this year.

At one point, SNL creator Lorne Michaels even said he wanted to stick with the show until its upcoming 50th season.

"The 50th will be a big event," Michaels said. "We'll bring everyone back from all 50 years and hosts and all of that. It will be a very emotional and very strong thing. There won't be as many plus-ones, I can tell you that much."

Jack Ryan Season 4: John Krasinski Celebrates New Release https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/jack-ryan-season-4-john-krasinski-prime-video-release-new/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 14:19:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 016e19b1-de72-488f-89aa-8f2aa94005a2

Jack Ryan Season 4 got a brand new sneak peek from John Krasinski. The Prime Video star posted a clip on his social media to tease fans as the season's release happens today. That's right Jack Ryan is back to thrill audiences with Krasinski facing off against challenges new and old. Amazon previously gave fans that big trailer to give them an idea of what the hero would be up against. You know it's never an easy time, but the action will be there in spades. Tom Clancy die-hards are going to be pleased with what's going down in Jack Ryan Season 4. Check it out down below!

Here's how Prime Video describes the new season: "The fourth and final season finds Jack Ryan on his most dangerous mission yet. As the new CIA Acting Deputy Director, Jack is tasked with unearthing internal corruption. As he investigates, Jack discovers the convergence of a drug cartel with a terrorist organization, ultimately revealing a conspiracy much closer to home and testing our hero's belief in the system he has always fought to protect."

Bringing Jack Ryan To A Close

tom-clancy-s-jack-ryan-1193009.jpg

Jack Ryan is ending with Season 4, and its been a ride. The creators have been able to pull in all sorts of elements from the character's history. One big thing for Season 4 is the possible introduction of Ding Chavez. He's a popular name for longtime Jack Ryan fans. There's even been speculation that Ding could get a spinoff series after the show ends.

"When you do something like this, it was a very narrow target. I realized that as good as wrote the show, if we didn't get the right guy, the show wasn't gonna work," original Jack Ryan producer Carlton Cuse explained in a previous interview. "And you need to find a guy who's a leading man, who is vulnerable, who has got a big brain -- because that's Jack Ryan's superpower, is his brain -- plus he's gotta be a believable action guy, [and] we wrote the character with charm. I mean, the more characteristics you add, the shorter the list gets of guys that can do it. And John was the guy who we felt embodied everything we wanted in the character."

Jack Ryan's Cast Shares Their Favorites From Tom Clancy

jack-ryan-1120163.jpg

Comicbook.com caught up with Jack Ryan's cast in Season 4. They revealed what their introduction to Tom Clancy's work with the iconic character was. Not surprising that there's a wide variety of responses available.

"Hunt for Red October was the first one. Clear and Present Danger and so on and so forth," Louis Ozawa, a fresh face for Jack Ryan in Season 4, said. "And, I was also a fan of the first season of Jack Ryan."

"Clear and Present Danger was I think probably the first one and then I went to see, Hunt for Red October," Michael Pe?a, who is set to play Ding Chavez, added. "Then Jack Ryan Season 1, it was a little bit different because it focused mainly on him. I just love that show. I watched it in two days, the first season. I became a fan. It's lucky for us being in a show that you're a fan of. That hardly ever happens."

Jim Henson's Dinosaurs Get Their First Action Figures In 30 Years https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/jim-hensons-dinosaurs-get-their-first-action-figures-in-30-years/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 14:01:00 +0000 Sean Fallon ef557ff1-dc8a-4bf4-bec8-4fa59e326cb9 b941640c4cdc4df0bf3a8088a05ce0edxl.jpg

The family sitcom Dinosaurs ran on ABC between 1991 and 1994, which is basically a blip in the history of television. However, a TV show about an anthropomorphic dinosaur family living in Pangea in the year 60,000,000 BC is hard to forget, especially when the Jim Henson Company is behind the character designs. Dinosaurs managed to plant the seeds of nostalgia in those four years, which is why the show is still inspiring merch like Funko Pops and these new Ultimates figures from NECA. As far as we can tell, these are the first action figures produced for the show since 1993.

Alan Arkin, Oscar and Tony Winner, Dead at 89 https://comicbook.com/movies/news/alan-arkin-oscar-and-tony-winner-dead-at-89/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 12:50:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 5026a1fd-6b4c-4810-82e9-cfd0b9634fe7 Beloved Hollywood actor Alan Arkin, star of movies like Catch-22 and Little Miss Sunshine, has died. He was 89 years old. Arkin's decades-long career touched on everything from Oscar-winning classics to crowd-pleasing franchises, starring opposite everyone from Peter Falk and John Cusack to Ethan Hawke and Steve Carell. His screen career started in 1957, although his first really notable role came in the 1966 film The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming. In between those two points, he did a lot of stage work, earning a Tony Award for his part in Enter Laughing in 1963. Arkin starred in dozens of films and TV series since, and remained active right up until the end of his life, appearing in a major role in Minions: The Rise of Gru last year.

"Our father was a uniquely talented force of nature, both as an artist and a man," his sons Adam, Matthew, and Anthony told People in a statement. "A loving husband, father, grand and great grandfather, he was adored and will be deeply missed."

While 1968's Inspector Clouseau was a critical and commercial disappointment, its existence still means that Arkin was the second actor ever to play the iconic role, taking over from The Pink Panther star Peter Sellers (and then handing the role back over to him for the next installment). Just a couple of years later, Arkin would have a career-defining role in Catch-22.

In 1970 and 1971, just as Catch-22 was making its way into theaters, Arkin recurred in a handful of episodes of Sesame Street, playing a character named Larry, but by 1972 had gone in a very different direction, starring in The Last of the Red Hot Lovers. In the years that followed, he would play Sigmund Freud in The Seven Percent Solution and frazzled father Sheldon Kornpett in The In-Laws, which saw him bouncing off Peter Falk in one of the most beloved comedies of the 1970s.

In the 1980s, Arkin started to dabble in genre work a bit, playing roles in Full Moon High, The Last Unicorn, and The Return of Captain Invincible before stepping into a 3-episode guest arc on St. Elsewhere. Around this time, he also started to take on more stage and TV work, appearing on American Playhouse and in the much-hyped TV movie Escape From Sobibor alongside Rutger Hauer.

Arkin kicked off the 1990s with a string of beloved films that remain relevant to this day, including Edward Scissorhands, The Rocketeer, and Glengarry Glen Ross. Around this time, he started to really lean into being an older-looking, neurotic, Jewish actor, with roles like Glengarry Glen Ross and later Grosse Pointe Blank really leaning into that archetype. He played roles in So I Married an Axe Murderer, North, and The Jerky Boys before ending the decade with Gattaca, The Slums of Beverly Hills, and the aforementioned Grosse Pointe Blank, in which he dug back to his Freudian roots to play a psychiatrist -- although this time, one far out of his depth.

By the 2000s, Arkin was one of the most respected characters actors in Hollywood, and he would stand out even in small roles, whether in America's Sweethearts, Will & Grace, or The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause. In 2006, after having previously been nominated for The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming and The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, Arkin finally won an Academy Award for his eccentric and memorable performance in Little Miss Sunshine. The role also netted him a BAFTA Award (his second, after The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming) and a Screen Actors Guild Award (his first, although he got another a few years later for Argo).

Working less by the late 2000s, Arkin nevertheless managed to alternate critical darlings with franchise fare, starring with Little Miss Sunshine's Steve Carell again in Get Smart before taking roles in Marley & Me, The Muppets, and Argo. He played J.D. Salinger in Netflix's BoJack Horseman, and appeared in 2019's remake of Dumbo and 2020's Spenser Confidential, all while playing Norman Newlander on The Kominsky Method, a role that he played until 2021.

Our condolences to Mr. Arkin's family, friends, collaborators, and fans during this difficult time.

Max Launches Warrior Podcast to Accompany Season 3 Episodes https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/warrior-season-3-max-podcast-launch/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 05:04:00 +0000 Charlie Ridgely f3d39fbf-c6a4-472c-9c19-6e87cef535e2

After a nearly three-year hiatus, Warrior is finally returned for its third season. The series, inspired by the writings of Bruce Lee, began as a Cinemax series but has since moved to the Max streaming service. Thursday saw Max drop the first three episodes of the highly anticipated third season, with the rest of the season to be released on a weekly basis going forward. In addition to the new season, Max is also launching a podcast to go with Season 3's episodes.

Max's Warrior podcast launched on Thursday alongside the Season 3 premiere of the TV series. The audio show is hosted by journalist and Lisa Ling and Warrior star/writer Hong Lee. Each episode, the duo will break down the events of the show and speak to creators, directors, and cast members.

Even though three episodes of Warrior Season 3 were released all at once, only one episode of the podcast was released on Thursday. The second and third episodes will arrive on Friday and Saturday, with subsequent episodes released alongside episodes of the show. Thursday's podcast premiere features creator and executive producer Jonathan Tropper. You can listen to it here.

Warrior's Journey to Max

Warrior was created by Jonathan Tropper, the writer behind Cinemax's hit series Banshee. Tropper also executive produces alongside Justin Lin and Shannon Lee, the daughter of the late Bruce Lee. The series was an original on Cinemax for two seasons, but the premium network shut down production on all original dramas, leaving Warrior without a home. Fortunately, Max (formerly HBO Max) picked up the series as an original and renewed it for Season 3.

"Justin, Jonathan, and I were thrilled when Warrior was put on HBO platforms to be discovered by a whole new legion of fans," Lee said back when Season 3 was announced. "Now we are excited and grateful for the opportunity to do another season, and we applaud HBO Max for understanding the importance of telling this story and for continuing to support this level of representation in our industry. I just know that my father is grinning right now to see this show he dreamed of so long ago continuing to beat the odds. We have every intention of delivering the same high level of meaningful storytelling and Gung Fu action in season 3!"

Warrior Season 3 Teases Big Action

Speaking to ComicBook.com ahead of Season 3, star Jason Tobin hinted at a big and "emotional" fight that fans are going to be really excited about.

"I have a favorite fight scene from Season 3, but I don't feel like I could talk much about it," Tobin told us. "But I can explain to you why I enjoyed it so much, and hopefully when the audience sees it, they'll know what I'm talking about. There's been many, many great scenes, many great fight scenes that I've done on Warrior, but what I particularly enjoyed about Season 3 was that we'd all done this before. We're working with the same teams. There's a shorthand for working together, and it was just another level of collaboration where it wasn't just the choreography, it wasn't just the writing, it was the acting and putting all together so that the fight scene is more than the sum of its parts."

"And then getting to work with the actors as much as it was getting to work with the choreographers, the stunt performers," he added. "It was really a melding of all these different departments and truly when filmmaking is at its best, in my opinion."

The first three episodes of Warrior Season 3 are now streaming on Max, along with every episode from Seasons 1 and 2.

Yellowjackets Star Blasts Latest Fan Theory, "Give Me a Break" https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/yellowjackets-fan-theory-van-villain-liv-hewson/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 04:28:00 +0000 Charlie Ridgely 0dc5c385-72cc-4fc2-b7f8-8716186bab98

Over the course of two seasons, Showtime's Yellowjackets has established itself as one of the most twisted and entertaining TV shows around. The mystery-thriller follows a group of high school girls lost in the wilderness after a plane crash, and the women they become more than two decades after the accident. Yellowjackets asks a lot of questions without providing many answers (yet), leading to an abundance of fan theories online. One of the theories floating around after the conclusion of Season 2 focuses on the character of Van, and how she might be the big "evil" force behind so much of the tragedy.

There isn't a lot of hard evidence to support that claim, and Van has been on the wrong end of some of the worst incidents in the series so far. Liv Hewson, who plays the teenage version of Van, thinks that theory is beyond ridiculous.

"Van, who's been minding her business in Ohio for 25 years? Give me a break," Hewson told Teen Vogue during a recent interview. "If somebody's 'evil,' you don't have to think about what their motivations are. You're invited to engage with these characters as human beings insofar as you want to or decide to, but to see people try and react to Yellowjackets as moral absolutism? I'm not sure what show you're watching. Everyone's gonna do terrible things on the 'doing terrible things to survive' show!"

As Hewson indicated, Van has been arguably the furthest removed from the drama since leaving the wilderness. She's been running a video store in Ohio, taking care of her ailing mother, and dealing with cancer of her own.

Yellowjackets Bonus Episode

The second season of Yellowjackets wrapped up its run on Showtime earlier this year, but there's more on the way before Season 3. Co-creator Ashley Lyle revealed on social media that there will be "bonus episode" arriving some time between Season 2 and Season 3, though the exact timing and content of the episode is a total mystery,

"There will be a bonus episode between seasons," Lyle told a fan on Twitter, "but I love you guys and I don't want y'all to lose sleep thinking it's tonight."

Some fans had theorized that an unannounced episode would be released the week after the Season 2 finale aired. The second season only consisted of nine episodes, so many had hoped that there would be a surprise 10th installment at its normal time.

What did you think of the second season of Yellowjackets? Which wild fan theory is your favorite? Let us know in the comments!

The Afterparty's Jack Whitehall & Paul Walter Hauser Are Hyped for AEW Fight Forever https://comicbook.com/wwe/news/the-afterpartys-jack-whitehall-paul-walter-hauser-are-hyped-for-aew-fight-forever/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 03:47:00 +0000 Spencer Perry 96692697-4bd1-4b0a-a816-367dd2bfa009

Golden Globe winning actor Paul Walter Hauser may be recognizable for his work in shows like Black Bird, I, Tonya, and Cobra Kai, but he's also a very vocal fan of wrestling. The day after winning the Golden Globe he would even appear on All Elite Wrestling Dynamite, wherein Jeff Jarrett smashed a guitar over his head and stole his award. Speaking with ComicBook.com about the upcoming new season of The Afterparty on Apple TV+, and considering the recent release of AEW Fight Forever, we had to ask Hauser who he's picking first when he gets his hands on the new game.

"The first person I'm going to play as is my favorite wrestler of all time, Steve Borden. You fans know him as Sting," Hauser revealed. "I love that guy. He's my number one. He's on my Mount Rushmore of wrestlers." For the interview Hauser was paired with co-star Jack Whitehall who admitted that his own love for wrestling is how he and Paul first bonded. "Oh, I don't make him watch it. He's a fan," Hauser added.

"That's how we first bonded was our love of wrestling," Whitehall added. "I slid into his DMS and we started talking about AEW. We've been to wrestling together." When asked by Hauser who he's playing first in AEW Fight Forever, Whitehall selected, Hangman page, hoping to pit him against CM Punk.

"Barn burner," Hauser added "I'm gonna do Sting versus Dustin Rhodes in a loser retires match."

ComicBook.com's own Connor Casey reviewed AEW: Fight Forever and scored the game a 4 out of 5, writing in part: "AEW: Fight Forever has the core of a genuinely great wrestling game, as the gameplay is pure, unabashedly fun. And while going the route of No Man's Sky has been teased in interviews -- in which waves of post-launch updates and DLC help improve the experience -- it's also possible this goes the route of Street Fighter where a sequel could build off the original idea and strike gold. This game won't change the pro wrestling video game landscape, but fans of AEW and players looking for a different experience from WWE's annual offering will enjoy it."

AEW: Fight Forever's Standard and Elite Editions is available now for PlayStation 5 & 4, Xbox Series X/S and One, Nintendo Switch and Microsoft Windows.

The Afterparty season 2 premieres on Apple TV+ on July 12.

Monster Season 2: Netflix Casts Leads for Ryan Murphy's Dahmer Follow-Up https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/monster-season-2-netflix-casts-leads-for-ryan-murphys-dahmer-follow-up/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 03:32:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 5a5e0241-fcf2-4149-807a-f6ea54b78ad2

Ryan Murphy's anticipated second season of Monster, a series that will center on the Menendez Brothers murder, has cast its leads. Cooper Koch and Nicholas Alexander Chavez will play Erik and Lyle Hernandez, brothers who were convicted of killing their parents in 1996. While the first season of Monster drew fire from critics for glamorizing the murders of Jeffrey Dahmer, the Menendez killings are a bit less controversial -- although certainly no less high-profile, having given the OJ Simpson trial a run for its money as the most-covered big-money murder trial of the 1990s.

Deadline first broke the story. Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story will be the next installment in the franchise, and one of the last big projects for Murphy at Netflix, having recently revealed that he plans to leave the streamer and set up shop with Disney at the end of his current contract.

On August 20, 1989, Jos? and Mary Men?ndez were killed in their Beverly Hills home, with their sons calling 911 to report that someone had killed their parents, as they claimed they were out that evening seeing Tim Burton's Batman. In the months after the murders, the brothers lived relatively affluent lifestyles, thanks to the inheritance from their parents, which partially contributed to authorities believing the brothers were the only ones with a motive for the murders. Erik would go on to confess his crimes to his psychologist in 1990, leading to the pair's arrest.

The trial of the Men?ndez brothers revealed that the pair had been physically, emotionally, and sexually abused by their parents over the course of years, leading to the night of their murder, in which the brothers claimed they feared for their own lives. The brothers were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for their crimes in 1996, a process which took two trials, since the first ended in a deadlocked jury.

Between the salacious details of the crimes, the televised trial, and growing infatuation the public held for cable TV, the trial and the brothers themselves became a major staple of pop culture in the early '90s. Last year's Monster was a major event for Netflix, topping its most-watched charts for weeks, and star Evan Peters earned various awards for his portrayal of Dahmer. The controversies largely centered around what some audiences felt was an exploitative and humanizing portrayal of Dahmer, with victims' families expressing their disappointment with Netflix and Murphy for the series' existence. With Season 2 focusing on one specific crime, it would seem more likely that the series will spend just as much time exploring the public's obsession with the crimes as the crimes themselves.

Gattaca TV Show Scrapped by Showtime https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/gattaca-tv-show-scrapped-by-showtime/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 03:19:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame a0acaded-03dc-458b-b637-bff63e25663c

Showtime will no longer be moving forward with their planned TV adaptation of Gattaca. The network announced today that they had declined to pick up the series, which was to hail from Homeland producers Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa and Sony Pictures Television. The project was one of four that will no longer be going forward at Showtime, according to a new report at Variety. Seasoned, a series starring Mandy Patinkin that had previously been given a full season order, has been axed, as well as Split and Sweetness.

Development on Gattaca was announced back in March. It was originally announced at the same time Seasoned was ordered. The cancelled projects appear to be casualties of the Paramount+/Showtime app merger.

Earlier this week, Paramount+ also announced that they were removing Fantasy Football, The Game, Ghislaine: Partner in Crime, Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, From Cradle to Stage, Inside Amy Schumer, Queen of the Universe, Snow Day, Star Trek: Prodigy, and Tell Me a Story from the platform, with at least Star Trek and Grease looking for potential new homes.

"The Paramount+ series Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, Star Trek: Prodigy, Queen of the Universe, and The Game have completed their runs on Paramount+ and will not be returning to the service," a Paramount+ spokesperson said on Friday. "We want to extend our thanks to our tremendously talented cast and crew and our producing partners for their passionate work and dedication on these programs, and we wish them all the best on their future endeavors."

The original Gattaca film was released in 1997 with the dystopian film starring Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, along with Jude Law, Alan Arkin and more. Written and directed by Andrew Niccol, the dystopian film was set in a near future where people utilized eugenics to screen their children for genetic defects and thus, created a lower class of people called "in-valids". In the film Hawke's character, Vincent, is an "in-valid" who takes on the identity of a genetically "superior" man, Jerome (Law) so that he can pursue his dream of space flight. The film wasn't a commercial success but was a critical success and was praised for being both intelligent and scientifically provocative. It was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Art Direction. The film has also since gone on to become a cult classic.

The Showtime series is not the first time an adaptation of Gattaca had been attempted. It was previously reported in 2009 that Sony Pictures Television was developing a police procedural take on the film, though that project -- which was to have been written by Gil Grant -- didn't move forward.

Paramount+ Removes Inside Amy Schumer, Many Nickelodeon Shows, and More From Streamer https://comicbook.com/movies/news/paramount-removes-inside-amy-schumer-many-nickelodeon-shows/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 03:16:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 1faa96d6-59d9-42b8-8a22-5e24d6466861

As part of the rollout for Paramount+ with Showtime, Paramount Global has removed a number of shows from the Paramount+ streaming platform, including Inside Amy Schumer, Tell Me A Story, and a handful of Nickelodeon series. Today's departures join Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, Star Trek: Prodigy, and other recent cancellations announced last week. While they are being removed from the streamer, it seems unlikely many of these series will be removed completely from the internet. Yes, there have been plenty of shows and movies cancelled by a number of platforms with an eye toward writing down losses for tax reasons, but between reports that Star Trek and Grease will be shopped around, and the fact that several of these Nick shows have been around a while, it seems unlikely Paramount could claim a total loss on most, if not any, of those series.

While a number of Nickelodeon series have been removed from the platform for now, those projects were apparently part of a normal cycle of projects being swapped in and out of Paramount+, rather than a cancellation or permanent removal. Items being removed permanently include Fantasy Football, The Game, Ghislaine: Partner in Crime, Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, From Cradle to Stage, Inside Amy Schumer, Queen of the Universe, Snow Day, Star Trek: Prodigy, and Tell Me a Story. This list has been updated to reflect changes, as some of the early reporting was not entirely correct.

Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies is a prequel series to the beloved '70s film. The Game is a revival of the 2000s CW/BET series from Black Lightning executive producer Mara Brock Akil, and spun out of her popular series Girlfriends. Queen of the Universe is a singing competition show featuring the most talented drag queens from around the world. It appears that Grease and Trek will be shopped around, while this is the end of the road for Girlfriends and Queen of the Universe. Queen is the only show with a firm removal date, that being June 30. Star Trek: Prodigy is the first kids animated series from Star Trek in years.

Warrior: The Best Show You're Not Watching Is Finally Back on TV https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/warrior-season-3-max-watch-tv-best-show-streaming-bruce-lee/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 03:09:00 +0000 Charlie Ridgely f6861027-1ea4-4816-bf38-2d7907f7e376

There's a lot of television out there to watch. Between networks and streaming services, there are new shows arriving on a weekly basis and it's impossible to keep up with all of it. It makes sense that sometimes the truly great programs might slip through the cracks or fly under your radar. For many people, Warrior is probably one of those shows. The action-packed series, based on the writings of late martial arts icon Bruce Lee, is one of the best shows out there right now, and it's time to check it out if you haven't already.

If you're not aware, Warrior is a period martial arts drama set in San Francisco at the end of the 1800s. Think of it like Peaky Blinders, but with more kung fu and some of the most well-choreographed action you'll see on the small screen. The series follows the various Tongs (gangs) in Chinatown as they go to war with one another, as well as the Americans and Irish in San Francisco that don't want them in the country.

The action is top-notch; fight scenes on par with what you'll find in John Wick or The Raid (minus the modern weaponry). Warrior also contains an important and compelling story about family, immigration, racism, and what it means to become a hero. Each episode is filled with brilliant production design and rich characters, all of them bringing something unique to the table. You can check out the show's opening scene below.

If you haven't even heard of Warrior before right now, that's understandable, and you're probably not alone. Warrior has had a long and winding road over the last few years, so it's understandable how it could be missed. Hailing from Jonathan Tropper, the creator of Banshee, Warrior began as an original on Cinemax in 2019. Shortly after the second season debuted, Cinemax stopped production on all original content, leaving the acclaimed action series in limbo. Fortunately, Warrior was moved to the Max streaming service (formerly HBO Max) for its third season, but production had to be put on hold due to the pandemic.

On Thursday, three years after its second season aired, Warrior finally returned for its action-packed third installment. The first three episodes of Season 3 were released on Max Thursday morning, and the rest of the season will be released on a weekly basis.

What Is Warrior About?

warrior-season-3-ah-sahm.jpg
(Photo: Max)

Warrior follows a man named Ah Sahm, played by Snake Eyes star Andrew Koji. He immigrates to America in search of his lost sister (who he soon learns is married to the leader of a notorious tong). Unlike many other Chinese immigrants, Ah Sahm can speak fluent English because his grandfather was American. He's also a gifted martial artist, able to best just about anyone he'll meet in the States.

Ah Sahm's fighting skills get him roped into the Hop Wei tong, rivals of his sisters group, the Long Zii. This, of course, puts the siblings at odds, but no one is aware of their bond. There are also subplots following a couple of white police officers assigned to keep control of Chinatown, an Irishman determined to keep the Chinese from replacing Irish workers, and the wife of the San Francisco mayor, who forms an unexpected bond with Ah Sahm.

Each character exists in their own unique grey area, bringing different motivations to the table and keeping any part of the story from being black and white.

Warrior Cast

warrior-season-3.jpg
(Photo: Max)

Koji is the star of the show, playing a character that Bruce Lee had originally created for himself to play back in the 1970s (he was turned down and the series Kung Fu was made using many of his ideas). Jason Tobin, who you will probably recognize from a couple of appearances in the Fast & Furious franchise, plays Young Jun, Ah Sahm's best friend and the son of the Hop Wei's leader.

Dianne Doan stars as Mai Ling, Ah Sahm's sister and new rival. She's attached at the hip to her lover and Long Zii officer Li Yong, who is played by Joe Taslim. You're probably familiar with Taslim's work, as he's starred in films like The Raid: Redemption, The Night Comes for Us, and Fast & Furious 6. He also starred as Sub-Zero in 2021's Mortal Kombat. The rest of the main cast includes Olivia Cheng, Kieran Bew, Dean Jagger, Hoon Lee, Langley Kirkwood, Tom Weston-Jones, Chen Tang, Joanna Vanderham, and Miranda Raison.

Season 3 gets an exciting addition as well, with Mark Dacascos joining the cast as one of the new season's leads. You probably know Decascos as Zero, the rival to Keanu Reeves' titular assassin in John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum. He's also made a lot of fans as The Chairman from Iron Chef America.

While they're not cast members, two names a lot of action fans will be excited to hear involved with Warrior are Josh Stoddard and Evan Endicott. Before becoming the showrunners on Warrior, the duo were executive producers and showrunners for AMC's Into the Badlands, another criminally overlooked martial arts series.

I could write thousands of words about the different reasons you should be watching Warrior, but that would take away valuable viewing time. There are only 23 episodes currently available (with seven more on the way to complete Season 3), so it's a relatively quick binge.

Give Warrior a try. What you'll see on screen is a thousand times more convincing than I could ever be. I can almost guarantee that one episode will be enough to get you hooked.

SAG President Fran Drescher Provides Update Amid Looming Actors' Strike https://comicbook.com/movies/news/sag-president-fran-drescher-provides-update-amid-looming-actors-strike/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 03:02:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame e17dff7c-8b16-4e52-88f5-4b51bf40025e

Last month, the SAG-AFTRA national board unanimously agreed to send an authorization vote to members with the recommendation that members vote to authorize a strike should one be necessary during the upcoming labor negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). Earlier this month, the members voted, with 97.91 percent of SAG-AFTRA members in favor of a strike authorization ahead of negotiations of the TV/theatrical contracts with nearly 65,000 members casting ballots for a voting percentage of 47.69 percent of eligible voters. The union represents roughly 160,000 people, including film and television actors, journalists, radio personalities, recording artists, singers, voice actors, internet influencers, and other media professionals. The current deal between the union and the AMPTP expires tomorrow at 11:59 p.m. PT.

Speaking with Michael Strahan on Good Morning America, SAG President Fran Drescher told the host that there are some promising signs in the ongoing negotiation with producers. She said that there are still a number of issues where they aren't especially close together, though, and obviously time is running out.

"We do have unprecedented support from the union members where, if we feel like we're not making headway when the contract expires, which is June 30th at 11:59 p.m., we're gonna have to strike," Drescher said.

"You know, in some areas we are, and in some areas we're not," Drescher added. "So we just have to see.

The Writers Guild has been on strike since early May. During that time, the Director's Guild struck a deal, but the Screen Actor's Guild seems to be having more trouble coming to a satisfactory deal with management.

The Witcher Cast Reveals Thoughts on Henry Cavill's Exit and Liam Hemsworth Joining the Series https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/the-witcher-cast-reveals-thoughts-henry-cavill-exit-liam-hemsworth-joining-series-freya-anya-joey/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 02:14:00 +0000 Matthew Aguilar 30a30326-cb14-4f11-84a6-ccb54ca5c482

The Witcher season 3 is finally here, and Netflix has delivered the first chapter of the much-anticipated series. This is also part one of Henry Cavill's last season in the role of Geralt of Rivia, as Liam Hemsworth will be stepping into the role of Geralt in Season 4 and beyond. ComicBook.com's Matthew Aguilar sat down with Witcher stars Freya Allan, Anya Chalotra, and Joey Batey about filming their last season with Cavill and how they are feeling about Hemsworth joining the series, and while there is a sense of loss, there is also a sense of excitement about the future.

"Excited. Yeah, can't wait to have Liam on board. Well, he is, but to meet him and have him as Geralt," Chalotra said. "It's going to be bizarre, and I feel like I'm definitely going to feel that loss. I think we all will. Henry's been incredible and carried the show, so definitely going to feel that, but very, very excited for what's to come. There's so much story to tell."

"I think it's always...it's intriguing and exciting to get to see another version of this, or interpretation of this character," Allan said.

"Yeah, very excited, and we'll all miss Henry greatly," Batey said. "And as you say, behind the scenes, he's always just been very, very supportive and funny, good-natured professional who was always the first to laugh on those bad days and to crack jokes, and that presence is cemented in the DNA of the show."

"Yeah, cemented in probably us playing our characters," Allan said. "I know that I won't be able to help but visualize him going forward. It's just that's been Geralt, but I'm still really excited to see something new as well."

It's definitely going to be different seeing someone else in the role of Geralt after having Cavill in those boots for three seasons, but if Hemsworth knocks it out of the park, the change could usher in a whole era for the series. In the meantime, you can find the official description for The Witcher Season 3 below.

"As monarchs, mages, and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri into hiding, determined to protect his newly-reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it. Entrusted with Ciri's magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where they hope to uncover more about the girl's untapped powers; instead, they discover they've landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic, and treachery. They must fight back, put everything on the line - or risk losing each other forever.

The Witcher season 3 Chapter 1 (which includes episodes 1 through 5) is available on Netflix now, while Chapter 2 (which includes episodes 6 through 8) hits Netflix on July 27th.

New The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 2 Trailer Released by Prime Video https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/the-summer-i-turned-pretty-season-2-trailer-prime-video-watch-online/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 01:54:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson 94666f5e-369f-4c39-84b0-ac7955811fa2

The latest trailer for The Summer I Turned Pretty is here to burn in the back of your mind. On Thursday night, Prime Video debuted a new trailer for the hit show's upcoming sophomore season, after premiering it at a rooftop celebration with fans and members of the cast, in partnership with Teen Vogue. Based on Jenny Han's book series of the same name, the trailer for The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 2 showcases the newest developments in the love triangle between Belly (Lola Tung), Conrad (Christopher Briney), and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno), including the heartbreaking aftermath of the death of Susannah (Rachel Blanchard).

The trailer also provides the first-ever snippet of Taylor Swift's "Back to December (Taylor's Version)", just a week before the highly-anticipated release of her newest album, Speak Now (Taylor's Version), on July 7th. Several of Swift's songs have been featured throughout The Summer I Turned Pretty, with her hit folklore song "Cardigan" appearing in both of the Season 2 trailers.

How will The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 2 release?

As opposed to Season 1 of The Summer I Turned Pretty, which debuted in a single binge drop, new episodes of Season 2 will be premiering in a three-episode drop. Subsequent episodes of Season 2 will then be released weekly.

What is The Summer I Turned Pretty about?

The Summer I Turned Pretty is a multigenerational drama that hinges on a love triangle between one girl and two brothers, the ever-evolving relationship between mothers and their children, and the enduring power of strong female friendship. It is a coming-of-age story about first love, first heartbreak, and the magic of that one perfect summer. The Summer I Turned Pretty stars Lola Tung ("Belly"), Jackie Chung ("Laurel"), Rachel Blanchard ("Susannah"), Christopher Briney ("Conrad"), Gavin Casalegno ("Jeremiah"), Sean Kaufman ("Steven"), Alfredo Narciso ("Cleveland"), Minnie Mills ("Shayla") with Colin Ferguson ("John Conklin"), and Tom Everett Scott ("Adam Fisher").

The Prime Video series is led by showrunners Jenny Han, who also wrote the pilot, and Gabrielle Stanton. Han, Stanton, and Karen Rosenfelt serve as Executive Producers along with Hope Hartman, Mads Hansen and Nne Ebong for wiip. The series is a co-production of Amazon Studios and wiip..

"I approached it like, what do I think are the most important elements of the story to keep?" Han told Collider when Season 1 was released. "And what do the fans care the most about? I am able to pull from all the emails, letters, and comments I've seen over the years from fans, so that's how we looked at this adaptation. What do the original fans care most about? And then, also for me, what's going to be most like fun and exciting to explore? Because I think as a writer, you have to feel like you're doing something new in a way, too. That it's not going to be just the exact same thing, but what's the new approach? And how do I make this feel fresh?"

What do you think of the latest trailer for The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 2? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below!

As mentioned above, the first three episodes of Season 2 of The Summer I Turned Pretty will debut on July 14th exclusively on Prime Video.

Kevin Bacon to Star as Undead Bounty Hunter in New Horror-Action Series https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/kevin-bacon-to-star-as-undead-bounty-hunter-in-new-horror-action-series/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 01:46:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 50e6c905-7fd6-44f3-9fc8-e7944b22718d

Tremors and They/Them star Kevin Bacon is set to star in The Bondsman, a new horror series centering on an undead bounty hunter with a musical twist. The Bondsman has landed a straight-to-series order at Prime Video, and hails from Blumhouse Television and creator Grainger David, from an original idea by David. While the show did get a straight-to-series order, production on The Bondsman won't start until after the WGA (and potential SAG) strike is over. David will exec produce alongside Bacon, Jason Blum, Chris McCumber, Jeremy Gold and Chris Dickie for Blumhouse Television and Paul Shapiro for CrimeThink.

According to Deadline, who first reported the deal, The Bondsman is centered on Hub Halloran (Bacon), a backwoods bounty hunter who comes back from the dead with an unexpected second chance at life, and love, and a nearly-forgotten musical career -- only to find that his old job now has a demonic new twist.

The Bondsman will be a return to Prime for both Bacon (who starred in I Love Dick at the streamer) and Daredevil veteran Erik Oleson, who was showrunner for the second season of Amazon's Carnival Row, and will serve as showrunner on The Bondsman, which Deadline characterizes as a half-hour, eight-episode series. Blumhouse, too, has worked with Prime Video recently, as the production house behind The Horror of Dolores Roach, a horror comedy that will launch on July 7.

Bacon, a Hollywood fixture since the 1980s, has recently taken on a number of high profile projects, including They/Them, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, and City on a Hill, his series at Showtime. Bacon also reprised his role as Valerie McKee in a Tremors TV pilot back in 2017, but the project never went to series, in spite of a ton of fan enthusiasm. It would have been his first return to the role since 1990.

City on a Hill, which was cancelled back in October, centered on the unlikely partnership between a veteran FBI agent (Kevin Bacon) and an up-and-coming city prosecutor (Aldis Hodge) who work together to clean up corruption in Boston. The series also stars Jill Hennessy, Matthew Del Negro and Lauren E. Banks.

The series is created by Chuck MacLean and was executive produced by showrunner Tom Fantana, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and Barry Levinson executive producing along with Todd, Zamacona, Bacon and Hodge.

Nimona Star Eugene Lee Yang Wants to Join Avatar: The Last Airbender (Exclusive) https://comicbook.com/anime/news/nimona-star-eugene-lee-yang-join-avatar-the-last-airbender-exclusive/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 23:16:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson ba5ca8e2-99db-4c8a-8e3d-97acdfa3a292

This week will bring the arrival of Nimona, the long-awaited film adaptation of ND Stevenson's graphic novel of the same name. Nimona enlists an all-star voice cast to bring its unconventional fantasy story to life, including actor and The Try Guys member Eugene Lee Yang. After appearances in Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Star Wars: Visions, Nimona marks Yang's biggest role yet -- and apparently, he has his sights set on another major franchise. While speaking to ComicBook.com about his role as Ambrosius Goldenloin in Nimona, Yang revealed that his dream is to join the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender in some way. This comes after Yang went viral in 2020 for cosplaying as several of the Avatar characters.

"Avatar The Last Airbender, full stop," Yang explained in our video, which you can check out above. "They know. We're talking a little bit, but talk about some queer world building. You got to get some queer people in it. That's pie in the sky for me. Pie in the sky."

Will There Be an Avatar: The Last Airbender Sequel?

This comes as the Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise is going strong, with a live-action adaptation set to hit Netflix in 2024. The future of the saga also includes a new animated film and a new animated series about the Earth Avatar.

What Is Nimona About?

In Nimona, when Ballister Boldheart (Riz Ahmed), a knight in a futuristic medieval world, is framed for a crime he didn't commit, the only one who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona (Chlo? Grace Moretz), a mischievous teen with a taste for mayhem -- who also happens to be a shapeshifting creature Ballister has been trained to destroy. But with the entire kingdom out to get him, Nimona's the best (or technically the only) sidekick Ballister can hope for. And as the lines between heroes, villains, and monsters start to blur, the two of them set out to wreak serious havoc -- for Ballister to clear his name once and for all, and for Nimona to...just wreak serious havoc. Nimona is directed by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane. The film also stars Eugene Lee Yang as Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin, Frances Conroy as The Director, and Beck Bennett as Sir Thoddeus Sureblade.

"I'm so fortunate to have the opportunity to work on this project and the fact that it's Goldenloin was hugely important," Yang said elsewhere in our interview. "And I think that they saw that I had a lot of experience personally that is reflected in the themes that Goldenloin's journey inhabits, duty versus love. That's the story of my life. So I think that that was something that I jumped at the chance to be able to lend that to his perspective."

Are you excited for Nimona? Would you want to see Eugene Lee Yang join the Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below!

Nimona will debut exclusively on Netflix on Friday, June 30th.

The Bear: Will Poulter "Literally Begged" to Join Season 2 https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/the-bear-will-poulter-begged-join-season-2/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 22:58:00 +0000 Nathaniel Brail f5acf426-6126-4cec-85a9-2a992809dd8e

FX has finally released the second season of their award-winning series The Bear, and fans cannot stop talking about what happens. The Bear Season 2 has been receiving some really positive reviews, with a near perfect Rotten Tomatoes score, and has also been doing some record breaking numbers for Hulu after four days on the streaming service. It was revealed pretty early on that Will Poulter (Midsommar, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3) would be appearing in the second season of The Bear, but it seems that the actor actively sought out the role. In a new interview with Variety, Poulter revealed that he actually "begged" to be on the show.

"I called them. I literally begged to be in the show. I asked if I could meet with Chris Storer and basically communicated that I was such a fan of so much of his work, but especially The Bear," Poulter revealed to the trade. "He was kind enough to gift me with the offer to play Luca and it really changed my life, to be honest. It kind of helped me realize a dream of playing a chef on TV. I have such an immense amount of respect for chefs and the women and men of that industry. I feel like the whole society stands on the shoulders of people in the food and beverage industry, and we don't even necessarily really know it or think about it. They sustain us and maintain us daily and they don't get enough thanks for what they do."

What is The Bear Season 2 About?

FX describes the second season of the hit series as follows, "Season two of FX's The Bear, the critically acclaimed original series, follows Carmen "Carmy" Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White), Sydney Adamu (Ayo Edebiri) and Richard "Richie" Jerimovich (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) as they work to transform their grimy sandwich joint into a next-level spot. As they strip the restaurant down to its bones, the crew undertakes transformational journeys of their own, each forced to confront the past and reckon with who they want to be in the future. Of course, it turns out the only thing harder than running a restaurant is opening a new one, and the team must juggle the insane bureaucracy of permits and contractors with the beauty and creative agony of menu planning. The transition brings a newfound focus on hospitality as well. As the entire staff is forced to come together in new ways, pushing the boundaries of their abilities and relationships, they also learn what it means to be in service, both to diners and each other."

The Bear stars Jeremy Allen White, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Ayo Edebiri, Abby Elliott, Lionel Boyce, Liza Col?n-Zayas and Matty Matheson, with Edwin Lee Gibson, Oliver Platt and Molly Gordon.

All episodes of The Bear are now streaming on Hulu!

The Idol Star Teases Major Finale Twist Sets Up Season 2 on HBO https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/the-idol-finale-twist-season-2-canceled-hbo/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 22:02:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw ce643d33-4cec-43d0-a14e-92c95b1026d8

HBO's The Idol will be reaching its (very sudden) season finale this week, but one of th stars of the show is already promising a major twist in the finale, which could set up a thrilling Season 2 storyline. That is, of course, if The Idol returns at all.

To that latter point: Da'Vine Joy Randolph co-stars in The Idol as Destiny, the fierce and fabulous manager of titular pop-star idol Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp). In a new interview, Randolph rebutted the idea that The Idol is going to be a one-and-done "limited series" - a sentiment sparked by backlash to the show and a steep drop and ratings from the premiere.

"I think that everyone's intention is to have a second season," Randolph told TV Line. "This was never intended to be a limited series. HBO has been very happy with it."

HBO has also been on the defensive against rumors that The Idol is a disaster that the network is swiftly canceling. In a tweet, HBO said "It is being misreported that a decision on a second season of The Idol has been determined. It has not, and we look forward to sharing the next episode with you Sunday night."

The Idol remains an interesting case study in what constitutes "success" in the modern TV industry. In the modern TV landscape, minor ratings and the social backlash may not matter at all in the face of the fact that The Idol has consistently been in the zeitgeist conversation for months now. Like the two main characters at the center of the show (Jocelyn and The Weeknd's sadistic producer character, Tedros), breaking down industry conventions, shocking, and demanding the attention of the masses may be exactly why The Idol wins in the end, and secures a Season 2.

The Idol Season 1 Finale Twist Is Coming

the-idol-season-1-finale-twist-teaser-hbo-canceled.jpg
(Photo: HBO)

In talking about the season (series?) finale of The Idol, Da'Vine Joy Randolph had the following teaser for fans:

"There will be a turning [of] the table, and I think a really exciting set-up entering into Season 2... It will be very interesting to see how people respond to this last episode and see how things turn. It's going to show you something different that we haven't seen in a while."

"The man [Sam Levinson created] 'Euphoria,'" Randolph added to The Wrap. "You really think it's [the finale] gonna be surface and obvious? No, there's a spin -- there's a huge, huge spin."

The Idol surprised viewers when it revealed that Episode 5 would be the Season Finale - instead of a sixth episode, as originally planned. That said, the teaser for Episode 5 (see above) hinted that a lot of the backlash could get turned on its head if Jocelyn takes all the twisted experiences she had with Tedros and channels them into a massive comeback with a game-changing album. If that happens, it would be a Game of Thrones Red Wedding-style fallout, as Jocelyn presumably cleans house and rewards those loyal to her, and sheds those who faltered - including Tedros.

That kind of ending would at least give The Idol Season 2 the more level ground of having Depp officially taken over as protagonist and star, with bold new possibilities for what the show could be.

The Idol Season 1 Finale airs Sunday on HBO.

Attack on Titan Creator Expected the Series to End in Under 5 Volumes https://comicbook.com/anime/news/attack-on-titan-anime-manga-length/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 21:50:00 +0000 Megan Peters dbf57106-ee5c-4d98-b3d3-1450707f83cc

It is hard to imagine a world where Attack on Titan never had its reign. Created in 2009, Hajime Isayama brought Eren Yeager to the world with a wash of drama and bloodshed. Of course, the manga is now over as the anime's tenure is on the horizon. No one is more emotional over this end than Isayama himself, but in a recent interview, the artist admitted he wasn't confident Attack on Titan would last.

The update comes from K Manga, Kodansha Comics' own manga library app. The service launched a special interview with Isayama to celebrate its ongoing release, and it was there fans heard from the creator firsthand. When asked about the ending of Attack on Titan, Isayama admitted he was unsure whether the manga would last five volumes if that.

"I thought about this storyline from the beginning. Of course, not in great detail, but I thought about the general flow," he shared (via AttackOnFans).

"At first, the story was highly likely to finish in two volumes. I was so desperate over whether the serialization would continue. After gaining some popularity, I thought about the desperate ending. I had that story in mind initially, but I started to question that direction."

So there you have it from Isayama himself. The creator had high hopes for Attack on Titan, but the manga industry is a competitive place. It is hard to stand out, so as Isayama began working on Attack on Titan, he began plotting out a finale that could fit in two volumes. Thankfully, the Attack on Titan manga was given much more room to grow, but Isayama's desperate ending did find a way yet to reach fans.

If you have not read Attack on Titan, you can always catch up. The series the is available through K Manga if you like to rent titles while digital copies can be found at most online booksellers. For more info on Isayama's hit series, you can read the official synopsis of Attack on Titan below:

"In this post-apocalytpic sci-fi story, humanity has been devastated by the bizarre, giant humanoids known as the Titans. Little is known about where they came from or why they are bent on consuming mankind. Seemingly unintelligent, they have roamed the world for years, killing everyone they see. For the past century, what's left of man has hidden in a giant, three-walled city. People believe their 50-meter-high walls will protect them from the Titans, but the sudden appearance of an immense Titan is about to change everything."

Jujutsu Kaisen Announces Special Live-Action Project https://comicbook.com/anime/news/jujutsu-kaisen-anime-live-action-promo/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 21:10:00 +0000 Megan Peters 2c531bed-cc89-454f-98a6-6db276e90604

Jujutsu Kaisen is on the cusp of a big comeback. It has been a good while since we were reunited with Gojo Satoru on the small screen. Following the success of Jujutsu Kaisen 0, MAPPA has been hard at work on season two, and soon it will go live. So to celebrate, it seems Jujutsu Kaisen has pulled together a special live-action project that will liven up Gojo's world.

The update comes courtesy of Jujutsu Kaisen itself on Twitter. The anime took to social media to inform fans that a special promo is in production overseas. It turns out the series is working on a live-action TV commercial. The big project is being made to celebrate the release of Jujutsu Kaisen volume 23 along with the manga's recent sale milestone.

And what is that milestone, you might ask? It is one worth noting. After all, Jujutsu Kaisen has sold more than 80 million copies to date which ranks it above hits like Fairy Tail, Tokyo Revengers, and even Berserk. At its current pace, Jujutsu Kaisen is tied with manga like Fullmetal Alchemist, and it is gaining on My Hero Academia and Hunter x Hunter to name a few.

Of course, this live-action promo has plenty to celebrate, but it marks a first in and of itself. After all, Jujutsu Kaisen has yet to tackle the world of live-action film. This promo may just recreate scenery from the Jujutsu Kaisen manga, but there is a chance some lucky actor will get to bring Megumi or even Nobara to life. So for now, fans will have to wait and see what this promo brings.

Are you caught up with Jujutsu Kaisen? If not, no sweat! You can find all of season one streaming on Crunchyroll. As for season two, Jujutsu Kaisen is slated to return on July 5th. So if you need more details on the series, you can read its official synopsis below:

"For some strange reason, Yuji Itadori, despite his insane athleticism would rather just hang out with the Occult Club. However, her soon finds out that the occult is as real as it gets when his fellow club members are attacked! Meanwhile, the mysterious Megumi Fushiguro is tracking down a special-grade cursed object, and his search leads him to Itadori..."

Squid Game Creator Earned Little From Show Despite Grossing Netflix $900 Million https://comicbook.com/anime/news/squid-game-creator-low-salary-netflix-profits/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 20:50:00 +0000 Evan Valentine e97cdc57-b889-490f-a608-9b6975068a3f

It's difficult to dispute that Squid Game has become a serious money maker for Netflix. In fact, the South Korean-made juggernaut has netted the streaming service over nine hundred million dollars since its premiere, helping to not only usher in a second season confirmation, but a reality show challenge to boot. Unfortunately, it would seem that the creator of the runaway hit, Hwang Dong-hyuk, has seen none of the wild profits that Netflix has received since Squid Game hit the platform in 2021.

According to a new report by the LA Times, Dong-hyuk was merely paid a flat fee when he sold his series to Netflix, meaning that he hasn't been able to score any residuals from the high profits that Squid Game saw. The contract that the Squid Game creator signed also forfeited his rights to all intellectual property related to the killer game. Dong-hyuk did win an Emmy for the first season of Squid Game and is set to return as both director and Executive Producer for the upcoming second season.

Squid Game Creator's Comments on Pay

When Squid Games hit the scene, Hwang said the following to The Guardian when it came to his original payment from the streaming service, "I'm not that rich. But I do have enough. I have enough to put food on the table. And it's not like Netflix is paying me a bonus. Netflix paid me according to the original contract."

Squid Game has seen quite a bit of controversy as of late, not just thanks to the television series, but the Netflix reality show, "Squid Game: The Challenge". The series, arriving on the streaming platform later this year, houses 456 contestants looking to participate in games similar to the ones seen in the Korean drama. With contestants airing their grievances of poor working conditions and some even stating that the reality game show was rigged, the controversies haven't stopped Netflix's plans of bringing the series to its service in 2023.

Netflix did respond to the LA Times story, stating the following in relation to Dong-hyuk's original compensation, "We pay fair, highly competitive rates with our K-Content creators and set clear standards for our Korean production partners, who produce all our shows and movies. These standards meet or exceed Korean law."

Jack Ryan Season 4 Cast Reveal Their Tom Clancy "Origin Stories" (Exclusive) https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/jack-ryan-season-4-cast-tom-clancy-origin-stories-exclusive/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 20:28:00 +0000 Liam Crowley 02ac527e-ee01-4b09-be22-28cee48dbdb2

Jack Ryan is gearing up for its final season on Prime Video. John Krasinski's take on Tom Clancy's classic CIA agent has been going on missions for three seasons now, making him the most tenured Jack Ryan actor in history. That is no small feat either, as Jack Ryan has been a staple of the entertainment industry for decades. Veteran actors like Alec Baldwin and Harrison Ford have suited up as the character in films like The Hunt for Red October and Patriot Games while current stars such as Ben Affleck and Chris Pine have taken on the leading role in The Sum of All Fears and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit.

Speaking to ComicBook.com, the cast of Jack Ryan Season 4 revealed when they were first introduced to Tom Clancy's most iconic character.

"Hunt for Red October was the first one. Clear and Present Danger and so on and so forth," Louis Ozawa, a newcomer to Jack Ryan this season, said. "And, I was also a fan of the first season of Jack Ryan."

"Clear and Present Danger was I think probably the first one and then I went to see, Hunt for Red October," Michael Pe?a, who is set to play Ding Chavez, said. "Then Jack Ryan Season 1, it was a little bit different because it focused mainly on him. I just love that show. I watched it in two days, the first season. I became a fan. It's lucky for us being in a show that you're a fan of. That hardly ever happens."

"It was actually a new experience for me. When I was in discussions about Season 1, I took a deep dive into the books and the movies," Abbie Cornish, who is returning to Jack Ryan for the first time since the first season, said. "I'd seen a couple of the movies, but I needed to refresh on those, and the books were a whole another experience for me, too."

"I was raised on Harrison Ford, like all the movies that he's done. So of course Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger, those are in there," Betty Gabriel, who plays the Director of the CIA in Season 4, said. "I think what John brings to the table is really, it's really lightning quick and humorous, too."

Jack Ryan Season 4 premieres on Prime Video this Friday, June 30th.

Ted Lasso Series Finale Reaches Major Milestone, But Still Can't Top Arnold Schwarzenegger's FUBAR https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/ted-lasso-season-3-finale-ratings-record-apple-tv-netflix-fubar/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 19:55:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw ea25a53b-3236-44d5-b828-44dbf20ecea3

Ted Lasso's cast and crew can rest happy: the Ted Lasso Season 3 finale just hit a record-high for the series' streaming rankings. Between the dates of May 29th and June 4th, 1.24 billion minutes (or about 17 million hours) of Ted Lasso is estimated to have been watched by viewers. This was not only a high point for the series, but it was also a milestone for the entire Apple TV+ brand, as Ted Lasso is the first series on the streaming service to break the billion-minute barrier.

The Ted Lasso Season 3 finale alone (released May 31st) got 529 million viewing hours - more than forty percent of the record-setting total - a record for a single episode of the show, as well. Ted Lasso is holding strong with past seasons; the Season 2 finale remains the most-viewed episode at 960 million minutes, proving that new waves of viewers are coming into the series as the hype around the Season 3 finale (and the possible end of the show) has built.

That all said, Ted Lasso's record-setting performance is just a drop in the larger streaming pool, and the ratings for Arnold Schwarzenegger's new Netflix series FUBAR are definitely proof of that. While Ted Lasso finished third on the streaming charts, FUBAR held down the top spot, with 1.73 billion minutes viewed (SWAT was no. 2 with 1.41 billion).

While Netflix remains the king of streamers, and multi-streamer syndicated TV content like SWAT (Hulu/Netflix/Paramount+) remains the diamond content of streaming, this is still a big win for Apple TV+. Ted Lasso remains the biggest mainstream breakthrough hit that Apple TV+ has achieved - just in time for the series to possibly be ending.

"It's wonderful that people care. It's one of those things where if there was to be anything more -- which I don't know, nobody knows if there will be -- so long as it's done with integrity that's the thing that everybody cares about," Ted Lasso star Phil Dunster explained (via THR). "No one wants more for the sake of it, there's enough TV around. And I know that Jason and [writer] Joe [Kelly] and Brendan and Bill Lawrence, they will only do it if they feel like it's the right thing."

Ted Lasso Season 3 - In the 12-episode third season of Ted Lasso, the newly-promoted AFC Richmond faces ridicule as media predictions widely peg them as last in the Premier League and Nate (Nick Mohammed), now hailed as the "wonder kid," has gone to work for Rupert (Anthony Head) at West Ham United. In the wake of Nate's contentious departure from Richmond, Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) steps up as assistant coach, alongside Beard (Brendan Hunt). Meanwhile, while Ted (Jason Sudeikis) deals with pressures at work, he continues to wrestle with his own personal issues back home, Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) is focused on defeating Rupert and Keeley (Juno Temple) navigates being the boss of her own PR agency. Things seem to be falling apart both on and off the pitch, but Team Lasso is set to give it their best shot anyway.

FUBAR - A father and daughter have both been working as CIA Operatives for years, but each kept their involvement in the CIA hidden from the other, resulting in their entire relationship being a gigantic lie. Upon learning of each other's involvement in the CIA, the pair are forced to work together as partners, and against the backdrop of explosive action, and espionage, learn who each other really are.

Ted Lasso streams on Apple TV+. FUBAR streams on Netflix.

FX and Hulu's Reservation Dogs to End With Season 3 https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/fx-end-hulu-series-season-3-reservation-dogs/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 19:22:00 +0000 Nathaniel Brail 3eb4d3a2-d749-475b-899a-3b2afefd6406

FX Network has been hard at work developing the third season of one of their hit series, but it seems that that hard work comes with bad news. It has been announced that FX has officially decided to end Taika Waititi and Sterlin Harjo's hit series Reservation Dogs after it airs its third season, which is set to premiere in August. Waititi has yet to react to the series ending, but Harjo has already released an emotional statement on the decision to end Reservation Dogs after season 3, and hopefully that will ease the blow for die-hard fans.

You can check out his statement via his Instagram post below!

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Sterlin Harjo (@sterlinharjo)

"Aho young and old warriors! Here it is: the coming third season of Reservation Dogswill be the final season," Harjo wrote in a statement released on the social media platform. "That's a difficult line to write and a more difficult decision to make. However, it's the correct decision creatively for the show. I always knew what the end of this story would be, I just didn't know when it would arrive. As we continued to break stories and write scripts this season, it became clear to the producers, Taika and me that the season three finale is the perfect series finale. When we came up with the idea for Reservation Dogs, I didn't think the show would ever get made, but thankfully it did."

"The first and most basic idea for us as Native people, was to show the world that Native humor and Natives are funny. Almost all television and film depictions about Native people are most inaccurate. And most of them have been untruthful. It has been a gift to us to show the world a different perspective of Indigenous people and our culture. Most important of all, it has been a dream to collaborate and make a show that is entirely written by, directed by and stars Native people. These are our stories, and they represent our people. We know it's an enormous responsibility and we don't take that lightly. It has been an incredible experience to have the show embraced so lovingly by the audience and TV critics. We're grateful for the support we've received from producer Garrett Basch, as well as John Landgraf, Nick Grad, Kate Lambert and everyone at FX and Hulu. Our experience with them has been exceptional and we're excited to develop new shows with them once things get up and moving again. There are so many people to thank -- our amazing writers, directors and crew and all the people of Okmulgee, Tulsa and the great people of the Muscogee Nation." the Reservation Dogs co-creator added.

What is Reservation Dogs About?

FX describes the series as follows, "From Co-Creators and Executive Producers Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi, Reservation Dogs is a half-hour comedy that follows the exploits of "Elora Danan" (Devery Jacobs), "Bear Smallhill" (D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai), "Willie Jack" (Paulina Alexis) and "Cheese" (Lane Factor), four Indigenous teenagers in rural Oklahoma. After the death of the fifth member of the Reservation Dogs, the crew took to stealing, scheming and saving in order to vicariously fulfill his dream of reaching the exotic, mysterious and faraway land of California. But after a promising start to their criminal endeavors, including the legendary heist of a Flaming Flamers chips truck, swiping some old lady's weed edibles and some low-grade grand theft auto, the plan went bust. The gang disbanded, with everyone trying to forge their own paths."

The final season of Reservation Dogs will premiere on August 2nd on FX and Hulu!

Oshi no Ko Goes Viral Thanks to a Special K-pop Tribute https://comicbook.com/anime/news/oshi-no-ko-anime-kpop-idol-billie/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 17:26:00 +0000 Megan Peters 96c5d51d-ac2c-4d44-9ed1-9d174fcfa254

Oshi no Ko has become a force to reckon with. If you did not know, the hit idol anime came to a close this week as season one rolled out its finale. The big update put Ai Hoshino on the map, and of course, the entire anime fandom is embracing the violet-haired idol. This is true for fans of all sorts, and thanks to a new tribute, we know one K-pop idol is just as in love with Ai as we are.

The treat comes courtesy of Billlie, one of South Korea's up-and-coming girl groups. Taking to TikTok, one of its singers Tsuki decided to play with a now-viral filter that turns users into Ai. As you can see below, the filter gives Tsuki a familiar purple hair style, and the K-pop idol is seen singing along with YAOSOBI's hit single "Idol".

@billlie.official

??? ??? ?? ???!?? #TSUKI #?? #Billlie #??

? ???? - YOASOBI

Of course, fans are loving this crossover because it isn't every day you see an idol pay homage to an anime idol. Tsuki has shown just how popular Oshi no Ko has become even with fans outside of Japan, but for anime lovers, this news is hardly a surprise. Oshi no Ko has been breaking records since its release, so this tribute was all but assured.

After all, Oshi no Ko broke records in the United States with its debut. The anime's extended premiere brought in record viewers to HIDIVE and gave the streaming service its biggest premiere to date. As for its music, Oshi no Ko has also taken over the Billboard charts. Between it and Oricon, "Idol" has over 200 million streams to date, and TikTok has only fueled its popularity with trends.

If you are not familiar with Oshi no Ko, the anime is streaming season one in full through HIDIVE. A second season was just announced, so for those wanting more info on Oshi no Ko, you can read its official synopsis below:

"Gorou is an ob-gyn with a life far removed from the glitz and glamour of the entertainment industry-the world of his favorite idol, rising star Ai Hoshino. But when the two are unexpectedly brought together, their fates become intertwined in ways that defy all reason. For the good doctor, it's time to stan(d) and deliver!"

Stephen Amell, CM Punk and AJ Lee Shine in New Heels Season 2 Trailer https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/stephen-amell-cm-punk-aj-lee-heels-season-2-new-trailer/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 17:24:00 +0000 Liam Crowley c0ff6d5f-0526-45eb-8e60-759aac92deeb

Heels is returning for a second season. Stephen Amell's professional wrestling series last aired episodes in Summer 2021, chronicling the story of Jack Spade (Amell) as he attempts to resurrect the Duffy Wrestling League after his father's sudden passing. Tensions boil when younger brother Ace Spade (Alexander Ludwig) gains huge momentum in storylines but Jack has hesitancy in fully pulling the trigger on making his brother world champion. Fans last saw the Spade brothers battling it out at DWL's biggest show yet, working themselves into a shoot when Jack revealed to Ace late in the match that he played a big role in getting the crowd to boo him earlier in the season. Season 1 concluded with Crystal Tyler (Kelli Berglund) as DWL World Champion, Ace disappearing, and Jack's professional life in the best place its ever been but his personal life in shambles.

Ahead of Heels Season 2's release next month, Stars has debuted the first trailer for the new installment. The fresh footage features Jack attempting to get his life back together while Ace sets the terms for his return to the DWL. Crystal celebrates with her new championship before Ricky Rabies (CM Punk) introduces her to a new member of the DWL's women's division, El Dorado (AJ Lee). Rival promoters tease invading the DWL, more worked shoot chaos ensues, and a mystery man is seen standing in the ring before the Heels title card hits.

You can watch the new trailer below...

Heels is a passion project for many involved, included Amell himself. Amell is a lifelong wrestling fan and has even wrestled a couple of matches both in WWE and Ring of Honor, facing off against the likes of Cody Rhodes and Christopher Daniels.

"Well, casting the lead of any show is hard, because they've just got to be an awesome, tremendous actor who can carry a show on their shoulders," show runner Michael Waldron said when it came to finding Heels' front man. "Playing Jack Spade, there's the added requirement of you have to have the physicality of a great wrestler. We had to have somebody who could believably pull off this stuff in the ring and outside of the ring, when framed against his wife and kids, and other people in the town, you'd believe this is a pro wrestler who lives here."

Heels Season 2 premieres on July 28th.

It looks like Undead Unluck is gearing up for a big debut. This fall will welcome the release of Yoshifumi Tozuka's popular manga as it heads to the screen. Now, we have just learned where the Undead Unluck anime will be streaming, and it turns out Hulu secured the rights.

A new notice from the streaming service confirmed Undead Unluck will stream exclusively on Hulu in the United States. The show is slated to debut as a Hulu Original this October, so this anime is another big get for the brand.

After all, Undead Unluck is one of this year's most-anticipated series. The show piqued curiosity when it was announced TMS was producing it alongside Studio David, the animation studio behind JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and Fire Force. From what we've seen of Undead Unluck so far, its bright colors and bold line art look great, so the anime has big expectations weighing up on it.

Now if you are not familiar with Undead Unluck, the series got its start at Shonen Jump under Tozuka a few years back. The ongoing title can be read courtesy of Viz Media if you'd like to meet Fuuko and Andy for yourself. So if you need more info on the hit series, you can read the synopsis of Undead Unluck below:

"All Fuuko wants is a passionate romance like the one in her favorite shojo manga. Unfortunately, her Unluck ability makes that impossible. But just as Fuuko hits rock bottom, Andy sweeps her off her feet-literally! Now she's become Andy's unwilling test subject as he works to find a way to trigger a stroke of Unluck big enough to kill him for good. However, when the pair discovers a secret organization is hunting them, it puts Andy's burial plans on hold."

Nickelodeon's Santiago of the Seas is gearing up for a new special, and they've recruited a truly one-of-a-kind star for the big adventure. That star happens to be the amazing Weird Al Yankovic, who will star as the devious jester Jinx in the new Santiago of the Seas Sky Pirates special, which is set to debut next week, and we've got your exclusive first look at Jinx in action thanks to a new clip. The clip features Jinx and his crew attempting to get away with the crystal, but Santiago and the crew are on their tail. Jinx isn't going to let them stop him, but just because you're throwing some pies to keep them at bay doesn't mean you can't also jump into a song about being the greatest villain ever, and you can find the full clip below.

Jinx is described as a "devious jester and the most powerful foe our Pirate Protectors have ever faced. Captain of a massive circus-themed dirigible, Jinx and his jester crew terrorize Celestia in order to steal their delicious sky honey. Jinx will stop at nothing to get what he wants... not even Santiago and his crew."

Weird Al couldn't have been more thrilled to join the show and have some fun in the swashbuckling sky adventure. "I'm always looking for an excuse to unleash and explore my inner sky pirate, so I want to thank Nickelodeon for giving me that opportunity." You can find the official synopsis for the Sky Pirates special below.

"The special follows Santiago and his crew as they work together to help a knight find his sword. For helping him, they receive the last Medallion and are shown a map to a sky land! El Bravo sprouts wings and takes them to Celestia where Queen Solara enlists their help stopping Jinx and his band of jesters. Annoyed at being stopped, the jesters steal the crystal, which keeps the sky land afloat. Queen Solara and the Pirate Protectors must use their skills to get the crystal back and save Celestia."

Santiago of the Seas focuses on 8-year-old Santiago 'Santi' Montes as he looks to keep the high seas safe in a fantastical Caribbean world. The series highlights Latino-Carribbean culture and weaves both English and Spanish into episodes, and each episode also features a specific Spanish word or phrase. When characters speak Spanish the show also looks to provide context so that viewers can learn what the word means in addition to just being able to pronounce it, all wrapped within a fun pirate-themed adventure. You can find the official synopsis for the show below.

"Santiago's steadfast and loyal crew consists of Tom?s, his clumsy energetic cousin whose magical guitar can be used to harness the wind; and Lorelai, a knowledgeable mermaid who can speak to sea creatures and transform into a young human girl. Together, Santi and his crew sail the seas on the majestic ship El Bravo, using their smarts, pirate skills and moral compasses to guard their home of Isla Encanto against villains like the nefarious pirate Bonnie Bones and her Palm Crow sidekick Sir Butterscotch."

Part one of the hour-long Sky Pirates special will premiere on the Nick Jr. Channel on July 5th at 7 PM ET/PT, and part two will premiere on July 6th at 7 PM ET/PT. Riverdale: Watch Archie's John Proctor Monologue From "The Crucible" (Exclusive) https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/riverdale-watch-archies-john-proctor-monologue-from-the-crucible-exclusive/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 16:00:00 +0000 Nicole Drum 71867f7d-468a-4f08-90bd-5952bc8ec2a0

This week's episode of Riverdale saw the return of Mark Consuelos as Hiram Lodge on The CW series and Hiram's arrival in the Town With Pep comes at an interesting time. One of the teachers, Mrs. Thornton, has been fired for being a communist and is being temporarily replaced by Penelope Blossom. With the students just starting their drama unit and working on delivering monologues, Hiram offers his expertise as a tv star to the class. But it wouldn't be Riverdale -- or Hiram Lodge -- if there wasn't more going on and we soon learn that there are a few witch hunts of sorts going on in Riverdale, even among the students.

It's a scenario that lends itself to what might be the most timely of monologues from Archie Andrews. Archie, with a little guidance from Mrs. Thornton, chooses to deliver his piece from Arthur Miller's The Crucible, giving a moving delivery of John Proctor's renouncing of his confession because he will not sign a false accusation and forsake his name. KJ Apa delivers a gut-wrenching performance in the scene -- and in character, it particularly hits home for Cheryl Blossom who has been asked to turn over the other gay students at Riverdale high. You can check out the scene for yourself which The CW has given to ComicBook.com exclusively in the video above.

Season 7 of Riverdale Has Taken on Some Significant Historical Events

Being set in the 1950s, the final season of Riverdale hasn't shied away from some of the more difficult historical events and aspects of the time period. The season premiere took on the murder of Emmett Till and its aftermath and this week's episode touched on McCarthyism and the Red Scare, something that Consuelos spoke with ComicBook.com with a bit about in a recent interview.

"I totally agree. I thought that this was a much more human version of Hiram," he said about this episode's version of Hiram. "And it's funny, just the historical references that they were making. I was wondering, when I was looking at KJ or at some of the younger casts, I'm like, 'Did you guys even study this in history? Because I know I did. I knew all about this.' We took a deep dive in McCarthyism. We took a really deep dive in this and I was a big history buff, so I was fascinated by this moment in history. So that made me smile a little bit, and I think a couple of them answered me, 'Did this really happen?' 'Yes! People were blackballed.' Desi and Lucy were at the target of this actually. Lucille Ball, namely, which is... I guess their show is fashioned Hiram and Hermione Show is fashioned after that as well."

Society is One of the "Big Bads" of Riverdale's Finale Season

Unlike previous seasons of Riverdale that has a more direct villain to deal with, showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa previously told ComicBook.com that society and narrow ideas of how society should be is one of the real villains this season.

"Usually, when we talk about the season, when we're planning the season, we usually have a big bad or a villain that all of the kids are at some point or other engaging with and fighting against. And in season six, it was Percival Pickens who was an intergalactic time-traveling sorcerer. But when we were talking about this season, we really felt like the villain or what they were fighting against society was the 1950s," he said. "And that the conflict that all of our characters to some extent or other were caught up in was, how do we live honest, authentic lives that are individualistic and that allows us to be exactly who we want to be in a society that represses that and that demands conformity and that punishes anyone who falls outside of the carefully constructed mores of the 1950s, the institutions of the '50s celebrated, which is to say via traditional American family, traditional American gender roles, traditional ... a social order that has since been exploded and broken down and rebuilt time and time again since that time? So, it felt like the villain, if there was one, were the 1950s. And by the way, we have characters that symbolize that... but the big conflict was with society at large and them sort of bristling against that."

Riverdale airs Wednesdays at 9/8c on The CW.

And now that he's been reborn into another world, he's ready to set the perfect conditions to live out his dreams to the fullest. Armed with his overactive imagination, Cid jokingly recruits members to his organization and makes up a whole backstory about an evil cult that they need to take down. Well, as luck would have it, these imaginary adversaries turn out to be the real deal-and everyone knows the truth but him!"

FROM Gets Renewed for Season 3 by MGM+ https://comicbook.com/horror/news/from-season-3-renewed-confirmed-streaming-mgm-plus/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 15:56:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh 5707e84e-7da5-4840-a786-cb95e5e360dc

The mysterious adventures in MGM+'s FROM don't look to be coming to a close anytime soon, as the streamer confirmed today that a Season 3 of the series was officially on the way. Given that Season 2 of the series concluded with a bit of a cliffhanger earlier this year, audiences will be excited to know that they could get the answers they were hoping for in a Season 3, though the new episodes will sure to debut an all-new series of mysteries. While it's unknown when the third season could start filming, MGM+ is aiming for a 2024 release for Season 3.

"The first two seasons of FROM captivated critics and terrified and engaged fans, who have formed a thriving online community that is trying to put the pieces together week by week as the secrets of the nightmarish town -- and possibly beyond -- are slowly revealed," Michael Wright, head of MGM+, said in a statement. "We can't wait for fans to see the surprises ahead in Season 3, which promises more scares and mysteries, but also more answers."

"We're so grateful for the support of our fans and FROMily this season. We have a lot more story to tell ... and shocking, weird roads to take you on, with plenty of answers along the way," Jack Bender, executive producer, and director, added.

Per press release, "MGM+, a premium linear channel and streaming service, announced today that the contemporary sci-fi horror series FROM has been renewed for a 10-episode third season. Created and executive produced by John Griffin (Crater) and executive produced by showrunner Jeff Pinkner (Lost, Alias, Fringe), and director Jack Bender (Lost, Game of Thrones), the series unravels the mystery of a nightmarish town that traps all those who enter. In the wake of Season 2's epic cliffhanger, escape will become a tantalizing and very real possibility as the true nature of the town comes into focus, and the townspeople go on offense against the myriad horrors surrounding them. The series is set to return in 2024.

"FROM is the second-most viewed series in the history of the premium network, behind the Emmy-winning Godfather of Harlem, starring Forest Whitaker and co-created by Chris Brancato and Paul Eckstein (Narcos).

"The series stars Harold Perrineau (Lost) and an ensemble cast that includes Catalina Sandino Moreno (Maria Full of Grace, The Affair), Eion Bailey (Band of Brothers, Once Upon a Time), Hannah Cheramy (Under Wraps, Van Helsing), Simon Webster (Strays), Ricky He (The Good Doctor), Chloe Van Landschoot (Charity, Skin), Corteon Moore (Utopia Falls), Pegah Ghafoori (The Perfect Wedding), David Alpay (Castle Rock), Elizabeth Saunders (Clarice), Elizabeth Moy, Avery Konrad (Honor Society), and Scott McCord (East of Middle West). Joining the ensemble in Season Two were Nathan D. Simmons (Diggstown, This Hour Has 22 Minutes), Kaelen Ohm (Hit & Run, Eumenides Falls), Angela Moore (A Series of Unfortunate Events, Maid), A.J. Simmons (Reacher), and Deborah Grover (My Next Door Nightmare, Jann)."

The Academy's "Members Only" Spotlights Two Marvel Composers https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/the-academy-members-only-marvel-composers/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 15:00:00 +0000 Liam Crowley 1eebf52d-3bda-4fb4-9931-17b7962f30e4

The Academy's latest endeavor into auxiliary content comes in the form of Members Only. This four-part interview series takes two Academy members of the same branch, one new and one established, and has them engage in conversation. Members Only debuted last week with a conversation between Troy Kotsur (CODA) and Paul Raci (Sound of Metal), two actors who paved the way for hard of hearing talents across the industry.

This week, Members Only is turning towards composers. Episode 2 spotlights Natalie Holt (Loki) and Pinar Toprak (Captain Marvel) as they discuss how they have broken the rules of their classical backgrounds as well as their unique journeys along their respective creative processes.

"I kind of enjoy all the different parts of [composing] equally, but I never enjoy finishing. I always feel like I want to keep tweaking this so maybe I can add some more," Holt said during the episode. "I find it really hard to kind of reach that cutoff point where you have to deliver a cue and stop mixing something."

Fans will recognize Holt as the maestro behind many blockbuster franchises as of late. She gained immediate acclaim for her work on Loki Season 1 and followed that up with collaborative work alongside John Williams on Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Toprak has been in the entertainment industry for roughly the same time as Holt but has already scored a career's worth of projects. While she has dozens of filmography credits, Toprak's work has extended to both streaming and video games, as she worked on Prime Video Sports' theme song as well as music for Fortnite.

"It's such a great honor to be part of this community that we've all loved and admired. I've been watching the Oscars since I was six years old," Toprak noted. "I haven't missed one. I would wake up at three in the morning in Istanbul and watch the Oscars."

Members Only Episode 2 is now streaming on The Academy's YouTube channel.

The Witcher's Transition to Liam Hemsworth Will Be "Lore Accurate" https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/the-witcher-henry-cavill-liam-hemsworth-lore-accurate-explanation/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 14:43:00 +0000 Christian Hoffer 6ba6b224-42d2-49ab-b46b-991bfc036a87

The Witcher's executive producer claim that the transition from Henry Cavill to Liam Hemsworth will be "lore accurate," which could hint at another dip into the Witcher's take on alternate worlds. Earlier this week, The Witcher executive producer Tomek Baginski told Yahoo News that the upcoming introduction of Liam Hemsworth as Geralt was taken somewhat from the books. "We have a very, very good plan to introduce our new Geralt and our new vision for Geralt with Liam," said Baginski."Not going deeply into those ideas because this will be a huge spoiler, [but] it's also very, very close to the meta ideas which are deeply embedded in the books, especially in book five."

"It's very lore accurate," Baginski said. "It's very close to what was set out in the books and I think this change will be quite flawless."

While Baginski didn't elaborate on the plot point, the final book of The Witcher series deals with Ciri traveling to multiple alternate worlds, including one featuring the Camelot of Arthurian myth. In the books, Ciri actually transports Geralt and Yennefer to another world after Geralt is grievously wounded in a riot, with both of those characters' fates left ambiguous. Some fans believe that Ciri will somehow transport Henry Cavill's Geralt into another world to explain the actor swap, while others believe that Ciri will somehow pull a Geralt from a different world into the world of the show.

Season 2 spent a lot of time establishing the idea of The Witcher's multiverse, with humans, dwarves, and monsters all appearing on The Continent (the world of The Witcher) after a cosmic event called the convergence. While the Continent originally belonged to the elves, humans quickly became the dominant force on The Continent, forcing elves into becoming an oppressed species. While Season 2 likely wasn't meant to help ease The Witcher's transition away from Cavill as the star of the show, that set up could now come in handy as the show prepares to finish its run with a new actor in its lead role.

Our review of The Witcher noted that Cavill was the show's biggest strength and painted a grim picture for what the show would be like without him. "While Cavill shines (or more accurately glowers with radiance) whenever he's on screen, the pacing, effects, and acting from most of the remainder of the cast paints a grim picture for what the series will do when Cavill leaves the show at the end of the two-part season," the review reads.

Season 3 of The Witcher debuts on June 30th.

Disneyland Shares Trailer For Rogers: The Musical https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/disneyland-trailer-rogers-the-musical-california-adventure-avengers-campus/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 14:24:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 8513079c-d97c-46f8-bc91-5c8c9e446860

Disneyland has released the trailer for Rogers: The Musical and fans are really excited to see the show. On YouTube, Disney posted the clip that chronicles Steve Rogers's entire journey through the MCU. It feels like that tiny glimpse in Hawkeye really jumpstarted things in a real way. From the moment that Rogers: The Musical appeared on the Disney+ series, the possibility of this happening in real-time seemed likely.

Kevin Feige and the team at Marvel Studios seemed to think so too. So, when D23 rolled around last year, it shouldn't have been a surprise to see the Steve Rogers-led dance number "Save the City" leading the entire presentation off for Marvel. Now, fans can go see the musical for themselves tomorrow at Disney's California Adventure!

Here's how Disney describes the show: "As part of the Disney100 celebration at Disneyland Resort, the Hyperion Theater at Disney California Adventure Park presents "Rogers: The Musical" - an all-new, one-act live theater production performing for a limited time, June 30-Aug. 31, 2023."

"Inspired by the fictional musical number from the first episode of the Disney+ series "Hawkeye," the real-life "Rogers: The Musical" tells the story of Steve Rogers - Captain America, including his relationship with Peggy Carter," they continued. "The 30-minute show was brought to life through the creativity of Disney Live Entertainment, in partnership with book writer Hunter Bell and featuring music by Grammy-winning composer Christopher Lennertz."

How Did Rogers: The Musical Make It To Hawkeye?

Hawkeye bringing Rogers: The Musical into the MCU started with just an idea. As head writer Jonathan Igla drove into work, he would pass a Hamilton billboard. He had the idea of doing something like that, but for Steve Rogers. When the scribe jokingly mentioned it to Kevin Feige, he was surprised to get the push to chase that idea.

"It was one of the most fun things," Igla previously said on the red carpet. "Every day on my commute I drove by with my fianc? who was also my second-in-command on the show, Lisa clam. We would drive by a 'Hamilton' billboard every morning on the way to the writers' room, and one morning I just thought 'Rogers: The Musical.' And we started talking about it and it expanded."

He added, "One of the great things about working for Marvel is if you have an idea that starts out small or medium, it sort of started out medium I would say, and you pitch it to them and everyone is tickled by it and everyone is excited by it. They're willing to pick it up and run with it and make it even bigger, and I'm so excited for people to see."

Kevin Feige Made Some Calls To Help Secure Talent

Academy Award-nominated composers Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman weren't expecting to speak to Kevin Feige. But, the Marvel Studios head had a chat with them about Rogers: The Musical and everything just kind of scooted along the tracks.

"[Scott and I] were at an Academy Award dinner, and I'm sitting there and someone taps me on the shoulder and says, 'Excuse me, Kevin Feige would love to meet you,'" Shaiman remembered. "I knew who Kevin was, and I was like he wants to meet me, really? Turns out Kevin is a film score nerd. He started talking about [the scores I've written] one by one and I was like, I cannot believe this is happening. We started trading emails about scores and this and that, and when I would see [Marvel movies] I would send him an email. I guess when this idea came up for Hawkeye, for there to be a musical on Broadway, he luckily thought of us, and [Scott and I] couldn't be more ecstatic about it."

The Witcher Season 3 Early Reviews Reveal Surprising Rotten Tomatoes Score https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/the-witcher-season-3-review-rotten-tomatoes-score/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 12:28:00 +0000 Tyler Fischer c02f4f50-b8c0-4bd3-b6a5-2b07e0e5dd1b

The Witcher Season 3 is out and streaming on Netflix. Alongside the release, early reviews for the third season of the show have gone live, revealing a somewhat surprising Rotten Tomatoes score. Going into the third season, fans have expressed considerable concern and criticism as the show was seemingly set to get further away from the source material it was based on, or at least is what every pre-release trailer and quote, as well as Season 2 itself, signaled was going to happen. Couple this with the show's third season being in the shadow of Henry Cavill's departure at the end of it, and many didn't have high hopes for the junior season of the Netflix adaptation. That said, according to TV show critics, it is apparently pretty good.

Over on Rotten Tomatoes, at the moment of writing this, 12 reviews have been posted, giving the third season of the show a score of 92% in the process. This is obviously quite high, though perhaps it shouldn't be too surprising, despite the aforementioned context, giving that Season 2 of the show has a 95% rating, making it "Certified Fresh." That said, the audience score of the second season is a much lower score of 58%. There is currently no audience score for the third season, but there could once again be a huge gap between critic and fan.

"The initial draw of The Witcher was Cavill getting to play a character he loved and watching him fight monsters and grunt his way through sticky, magical situations. But as the show evolves into a geopolitical magic thriller, The Witcher won't be able to rely on Cavill or cool monster fights much longer," reads a snippet from our review of the third season of the show. "It's a fascinating thing to watch -- The Witcher show made its name based on Cavill killing monsters, but its underlying source material used those fights as a way to introduce Geralt to readers. And while The Witcher novels delighted fans with compelling characters and a great storyline, the show has failed to pivot to match the source material and is quickly running out of time."

As always, feel free to leave a comment letting us know what you think or, alternatively, hit me up on Twitter @Tyler_Fischer_ and let me know over there.. Have you checked out any of The Witcher Season 3 yet? If so, what do you think of it? Is it as good as critics are suggesting?
